FEGEITOK:
The standard practice is that you do 1 part cement to 3 parts coarse aggregate.

What is supposed to be varied is the sand of which you are using 1.5 parts.

So as far as I am concerned your mix ratio is fine.

I use 1 part cement to 2 parts sand to 3 parts course aggregate though.

As for your question on using 16mm for the columns and 12mm for the upper beams, here are a collection of links for you to review.

It seems to have received the seal of approval from maestros on this thread
Thanks for your time engineer

My mixing ratio is 1:1.5:3 u can as well recommend the best mixing ratio for me also. Length 50feets: breath 25feets: width 9inch size of a 9inches blocks which was used for the entire wall.

Also is it ok to use 16mm for the columns and 12mm for the upper beams for a storey building

Please I got this quote for some column work, is it fair

*Column Casting*
27 pcs (230 x 450 and 230 x 230)

33 bags of Cement = N141,900
Sand = N120,000
Granite = N180,000

1 ton 16mm rod (TMT) = N560,000
15 length 10mm = N57,000
Binding Wire = 16,000

Column formwork rental = N150,000
(Bamboo, Wood, column shutter, nail and workmanship)

Iron bending = 50,000
Casting = 30,000

*N1,324,900*
I think d price is fair for 27 columns, but d cement is too small oo. It should be 3bags for 2 columns, which should be like 40bags. what about beams?

Advantages of hollow blocks slab.

- Its more economical.
Hollow blocks is more cheaper to execute than normal RC slab. It saves more than 40% of total cost of both labour and materials to be used in construction.

for example. If you need 200pcs y12mm bars for decking in normal slab, you will need 120-150pcs of y12mm bars for hollow blocks slab. Same as cement and gravels.

- Low self-weight
Because of the hollow blocks been used, it reduces the quantity of concrete to be used which increases the dead load (self weight) of the building.

- More stable.
Hollow blocks slabs uses mostly beams which intersects with one another strategically, making it more stable.

Contact me for your building supervision or architectural drawings. My services are but not limited to;

- Decking contract (both carpentry and casting)
- Plaster labour contract
- Blockwork labour contract

I think 1 bucket is 25liters.

It's one bucket of water to one bag of cement.
Let me use this simple calculation to buttress the point.
assuming that you want to use a Water/cement ratio of 0.5. Hence for 50kg of cement, you will need 25kg of water.
Since the density of water is 1000kg/m3, and mass = density x volume.
since one bucket is 25litres = 25/1000 m3
mass = 25/1000 x 1000 = 25kg.
hence 25litres of water is 25kg.

Also to the final question that you asked,
1:2.5:3.5 mean
for every bag of cement ( which is 2 head-pan (flat)
5 head-pan of sand ( flat the surface, don't hip it)
7 head-pan of gravel (flat the surface don't hip it)
Thanks for the swift response, but d above analysis didn't spell out 1:2:5:3:5 kindly spell out what each digit stands for from the above analysis cos I know it's usually times 2 of the ratio, reason being that the concrete mixer usually mixed a bag of cement in two portion . However, are u saying there is no room for soft sand in ur formulation? What if it's column(pillars)?

abdulwastecx:
But 1:2:4 will not even give you the minimum required strength for most reinforced concrete applications.

If most reinforced concrete work. I use 1:2.5:3.5 which will give characteristics of concrete compressive strength of 25N/mm2 after 28days.

Also, the water-to-cement ratio is so important. W/C of 0.5 which will translate into 1 bucket for one bag mix should be the way to go.

For example, if Mr. A uses a mix of 1:1.5:3 with too much water, 1.5buckets, and Mr. B uses a mix of 1:2.5:3.5 mixed with 1 bucket, the strength achieved by Mr. B will be better than that of Mr. A with all things equal.

In summary, quality control is as important as the volume of cement used in concrete production. Also, I experiment with mixes and carry out tests from time to time.
Good day engineer, pls if am not wrong ur 1:2:5:3:5 means, 1 bucket of water, 1bag of cement, 10 headpan of sharp sand, 6 headpan of soft sand, 10 headpan of Granite
Pls correct me if am wrong!
Also how many litres of water is ur 1 bucket equivalent?

The position of columns are determined by the structural engineer from the architectural drawings. They are placed in such a way that they do not obstruct circulation while ensuring that the stability and design of the structure is not compromised.

In this picture, we can not but assume that this column is placed outside the wall because that's where the structural engineer deem it should be from the drawing available to him.

Such columns are referred to as unbraced..
Thanks for the insight chief engineer!

How many floors does your building has?

For your ground to first floor columns ( pillars
) please use 16mm bars.

Beam reinforcements are determined by the load it will be subjected to and the length/span of the beam. This will be calculated/ designed by the structural engineer. So I can't tell you the rebars to use on your beams.

However for the slab, Y12mm is very appropriate but the spacing depends on the load and span..

Do you have a structural drawing for your building?

It's a storey building on 30feets W by 60feets L
Hmm, what if 12mm is already in the ground foundation of like 3 coaches foundation, is it possible to continue the remaining long pillars with 16mm?

structural design is at the back of the building plan but I think it's bn ignored because am not on ground physically but everybody checking it said the buildings ok so far but I still want to b on more saver side
