Business › Delta Women Celebrate Reduction In Kerosene Price by aljharem3(op): 10:25pm On May 31, 2011
BY Emma Amaize
WARRI — A crowd of women, mostly housewives and traders, at Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, danced and sang in celebration of President Goodluck Jonathan, Monday, over the reduction of the price of kerosene from between N150 and N200 to N50 per litre.

Speaking to journalists during a solidarity visit, the leader of the women, Mrs. Victoria Oghrudje, said, “we are the ones that use kerosene for cooking and we know the untold hardship we have been passing through since the price went out of the reach of the common man. So, we are happy with our President, for being a true man of the people by keeping to his words.”

She said the women decided to celebrate because they went to the petrol stations to buy kerosene and found out that they were actually selling at the government approved pump price of N50 per litre.

Mrs. Oghrudje, however, appealled to the President to further ensure that kerosene was made available to filling stations at all times.
Similarly, another woman, who spoke at the event, Mrs. Victoria Omadudu urged the President to urgently address the problems of epileptic power supply and unemployment confronting Nigeria people.

She said, “solving these two major problems will better the lot of the Nigeria people and there will also be a reduction in crime rate.”

A man who was seen rejoicing with the women, Mr. Maurice Nagomo, said Nigerians should be grateful to God for having a listening President.

A political leader in the area, Chief Godwin Inumra, who observed the celebration by the women, noted that the action of the women was a fulfillment of the scripture, which states that ‘the people rejoice when the righteous is on throne’.

Health › Cholera Kills 20 In Abia by aljharem3(op): 10:23pm On May 31, 2011
AT LEAST 20 people are reported to have died from an outbreak of gastro-enteritis (cholera) at Ezeukwu community in Bende local government area of Abia State. However, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Okechukwu Oga, confirmed that only 15 people died and that the situation had been brought under control.

Oga disclosed in a telephone interview with Vanguard that those affected had been moved to where there were better medical facilities, adding that there was no cause for alarm as the situation had been brought under total control.

According to the Commissioner, the cholera outbreak occurred last Sunday in the community.

He pointed out that the casualties were those affected between 3am and 12noon that Sunday before the Ministry of Health became aware and deployed its personnel and medications to control the situation.

Oga disclosed that so far, over 70 cases had been recorded with 15 mortalities, assuring that the government had taken adequate measures to ensure that the decease did not spread to other parts of the community.

Suspected cause

Sources from the community were of the opinion that the outbreak would have been caused by adulterated water, as the community’s major source of drinking water is from a local stream in the area.

When the outbreak occurred, most of the victims were said to have been initially rushed to Royal Cross Hospital in the area, owned by the Methodist Church, which then called for government’s assistance.

The commissioner advised the people not to panic, assuring that enough medications and personnel had been deployed in the area.

Politics › Ex-gov Shinkafi Asks For Forgiveness by aljharem3(op): 10:19pm On May 31, 2011
The immediate past governor of Zamfara State, Alhaji Mahmuda Aliyu Shinkafi, whose tenure ended on Sunday, after four years in office as the number one citizen of the state, has called on those whom he might have offended in the course of discharging his responsibilities as governor to forgive him.

Shinkafi, who was represented during the handing-over ceremony by the former Secretary to State Government (SSG), Alh Mamman Bawa Gusau, said as human being, one was bound to make mistake but never at anytime during his four-year tenure in office, he intentionally or deliberately used his exalted office to oppress the people.

“I call on all those whom I might have offended in one way or the other in the course of discharging our responsibilities to forgive us. In our own case, we hold no grudges against anyone,” he said.

Shinkafi expressed appreciation to state executive council members, members of the state House of Assembly, politicians, civil servants, traditional rulers, Islamic scholars and other religious leaders for their support and cooperation.

He also thanked people of the state for giving him their mandate and support which was responsible for the successes his administration recorded during his four-year tenure.

The former governor urged the youth to remain committed to the pursuit of education, which he described as the bedrock of any meaningful development, hence the priority accorded it by his administration.

Shinkafi expressed his goodwill message to the administration of Alhaji AbdulAziz Abubakar Yari, praying that the new administration would continue to execute developmental projects which would have direct bearing on the poor.

Politics › Pro-southwest And Anti-southwest Among Reps by aljharem3(op): 8:10am On May 31, 2011
For the second time in week, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will today meet with members-elect of the House of Representatives on the party’s position that the Speaker should emerge from the Southwest.
The party is also working on Plan B to prevail on the members-elect to jettison the amendment to the Voting System before the election of a new Speaker on June 6.
Six candidates are jostling to be Speaker.
They are Aminu Tambuwal (North-West); Muraina Saubana Ajibola; Mrs. Mulikat Adeola-Akande; Emeka Ihedioha; Eziuche Ubani; and Bethel Amadi.
By the party’s zoning formula, it ought to be a straight fight between Ajibola and Adeola-Akande from the Southwest.
But Reps-elect from the North, especially the North-West, are teaming up with their colleagues from the Southeast to alter the zoning formula.
The party is however insisting on the retention of the zoning formula which favours the emergence of the Speaker from the Southwest.
Most Reps-elect from the Northwest and the Southeast are still adamant.
Investigation by our correspondent showed that some leaders of the PDP are expected to meet with Reps-elect in Abuja today on the position of the party which borders on the concession of the choice of new Speaker to the Southwest.
The party leadership last Wednesday met with Reps-elect, but most of them were adamant.
Some PDP leaders at the last meeting were a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih and the acting National Chairman of the party, Dr. Mohammed Haliru Bello.
The meeting left Reps-elect divided along pro-Southwest and anti-Southwest.
A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: "We are meeting with these Reps-elect again on Tuesday as part of a fence-mending mission to allow them to appreciate the position of the party.
"We have noticed that their ranks have been infiltrated by some influential PDP leaders who are opposed to Jonathan.
In the face of the rejection of the olive branch of the party, there were indications that the PDP has a Plan B to prevail on the members-elect to jettison the amendment to the Voting System before the election of a new Speaker on June 6.
"The party will insist on the reversal of the Open-Secret Voting System recently put in place by the House.
"I can tell you that the amendment carried out by the House will never stand," a member of the National Working Committee of the party said.
Chairman of the Justice Committee of the House, Seriake Dickson, who is an ally of the President and one of the coordinators of the pro-Southwest project, said: "The so-called amendment is untenable and inoperable. By parliamentary standard worldwide, parliamentarians do not vote in secret."

@topic title

No, our refineries would never function again in nigeria at least not up to commerial capacity

why

because we have people like edwin clark, jonathan, obj, bankole, ciroma, atiku, tinubu, ibb, alams, ibori, maduke, nzeribe, ekueme etc that have invested in multinational oil companies such as shell etc

if they repair the refineries, they will be destroying their investment thus losing money
