Business / Re: Naira Declines To N1,510, N1,466.31 At Parallel, Official Markets by Alusiizizi(m): 3:33pm On May 14 |
marenkurz: I don't engage in circular arguments so I will end with this note. If you are not interested in paying POS charges then withdraw directly from your bank. The fact that people do patronize POS operators should tell you that they are offering a service to the market. Surely you are not asking that they do this for free. |
Business / Re: Naira Declines To N1,510, N1,466.31 At Parallel, Official Markets by Alusiizizi(m): 5:18pm On May 13 |
marenkurz: You can always go and withdraw money from the bank for free The only reason why these POS operators thrive is because they provide a valuable service to the market. Addition: By the way, cashless policy is not much more than empty narrative, especially when the infrastructure to support such a policy doesn't exist. I don't know where you were during the period of that New Naira notes fiasco but if you were in Nigeria and had to suffer frequent failed e-transactions, have your bank debit you and being forced to wait in long queues at the bank just to resolve the issue then it should be obvious to you that the infrastructure to support a cashless Nigeria does not exist. |

peleson1: Sounds to me like you didn't get into professional coding. Also, from what I understand, Computer Science, as a course in Nigeria, is disgraceful to put it mildly, with the typical CS graduate not knowing even the basics of programming(I don't know how it was in UNILAG though, perhaps your experience was different?) 1 Like |

givedemwotowoto: "The bubble is burst". It's a figure of speech that is not to be taken literally. Let me explain. Suppose that I import pencils to Nigeria and I want to sell a lot of them, say, at Alaba market. I can sit in a shop and pray that customers notice me like most people do or I can push fantastic narratives about my pencils on popular media. Let's say that I claim that my pencils are magic pencils that will help people to increase the size of their bank accounts, the more pencils that they purchase. Soon the word is out of these magic pens of mine and all of a sudden, I get tired of selling pens and making lots of money. That massive surge of customers and sales that drive even more customers to seek out my product is called a bubble, which metaphorically, was blown to size by my bogus narrative. Eventually, there will be a growing realization by the market that these pencils are in fact not magical pencils and people have been sold "pig on a pole" and the sales stop, no one is buying my pencils again, in which case the bubble is said to have "burst" as the hype is revealed for what it is and sales collapsed. I hope that I have clarified things a bit for you as "bubble is burst" has nothing to do with air. "There is new advice", actually I suppose that I could have been a bit more explicit and mentioned that I am the source of that new advice. Based on my experience as a scientist and developer for many years, this is the advice that I give any young man looking to venture into programming, and don't retort that I am not a CEO of some big tech company so my opinion does not count as I have been coding/developing electronic circuits/doing automations for almost 30 years, I've been in those trenches and can discern wisdom from bull-shit in a five second window, things that your CEOs cannot boast of. 4 Likes |

givedemwotowoto: I hope you are aware that the so-called A.I. bubble is burst. Most of the ridiculous claims about the capability of A.I., specifically the Large Language Models like ChatGPT, that those C.E.Os claimed turned out to be just that, ridiculous. New advice to prospective tech professionals and developers: Learn as much coding as possible, in fact, instead of going for very high level languages like JavaScript, PHP and such that limits your capability to web-dev, go for lower level languages that stress control and understanding of fundamental concepts of data and structures like C++. If you can master C++ then anything that comes along the way would be a cakewalk. I once claimed on this forum that it took me only 6 hours or so to learn JavaScript and every single response that I get was to dismiss me as a liar. The reason why they didn't believe that anyone could learn such a "difficult" language so quickly is because most of them have no experience with C/C++ and so are not aware of the power that its knowledge gives to a developer. 2 Likes |

marenkurz: I just had to respond to this drivel. The reason why people are trading the Naira is because there is a market for it. POS operators make cash available to the market in exchange for a small commission. Covers the cost of transport to the bank, time spent at the bank, the risk of loosing their money as well as living expense. If you want to give opinion on economic issues then at least take the time to learn basic economics. |

Properties / Re: Would You Buy This Bicycle For N10 Million ? (photo Attached) by Alusiizizi(m): 2:00pm On May 11 |
elasticlala: You would probably want one of these if you are a professional bicycle racer. These bikes are usually designed with composite material for strength and light weight, also, there are probably going to be a lot of build-ins that optimize such physical attributes like center of mass, stability and a few others. Point? Most of these features would probably be impossible to obtain with a bicycle that was made out of iron. |
Politics / Re: Technological Advancements Nigeria Was Promised But Yet To Materialize by Alusiizizi(m): 3:35pm On May 10 |
This is the sort of long-winded shit that really shouldn't be heard outside of a cheap beer-parlor but of course, given that we are in Nigeria, anything goes. It is not that indigenous private individuals, with very strong emphasis on private, cannot produce these items, it's just that it doesn't make any economic sense, given the poor Nigeria infrastructure. Pencils? Even if someone were to get into the business of manufacturing pencils, the operation will not last more than a year without govt subsidy. Their production cost would be more expensive than the cost of importing from China. Cars? If I remember correctly, we already have one of those(i.e. Innoson). The sad truth is that the at market cost of a brand new Innoson vehicle is not much less expensive than the cost of a more popular vehicle like a Toyota, additionally, his main market arena is Nigeria which severely limits his prospective. In fact, but for massive support from Anambra State govt and to a much lesser degree, the Federal govt, Innoson Motor Vehicles would have packed up long ago. Airplanes? Same objection over car manufacturing applies here as well. If Nigeria really wants indigenous production then they should be encouraging indigenous manufactures with subsidies(like the case of Innoson in Anambra State), infrastructures and such and not with empty beer-parlour rants. 3 Likes |

safariman: Don't play word-games here, sovereignty is but an illusion. If you don't believe me, ask Iraq, Libya and so many other countries that the western powers destroyed simply because they disliked their government, way of life, e.t.c. Hell, a former president of the U.S., George Bush Snr, went into Guatemala, a so-called sovereign country, arrested the president, tried and convicted him in a U.S. court of law and imprisoned him. Basically, a country's sovereignty is directly proportional to how large its guns/nukes are. 1 Like |

I saw the nice pictures, read the long narrative that seemed more like the empty adulations of a sycophant than anything bearing useful information and yet what I did not see was a single reason to support the claim of this OP, that Maduka university will be the best in West Africa. What is the quality of students, quality of lecturers, rigor of coursework, degree programs e.t.c, e.t.c. It takes much more than shiny buildings and empty adulations to make a good university, not to talk of the best one. 1 Like |

How does borrowing money and throwing it away constitute good economic policy The money being used to "support" the Naira would be better put to projects that support indigenous products. I get paid in $$, the CBN give me a higher exchange rate than Malam and upon receipt, I immediately convert my CBN converted Naira to $$ because I see this smoke-screen and mirrors being performed for what it is. The Naira will depreciate much further in the near future. |
