The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two teenage boys, Gideon Harrison and Ifeanyi Ezeorji, for allegedly having sex with each other in the Ikotun area of Lagos. PUNCH Metrolearnt that while Harrison is 19 years old, Ezeorji is just 14. Our correspondent gathered that the two boys were arrested on October 23 by the Ikotun Police Division. According to the police, Harrison and Ezeorji had sex with each other through the anus, an act known as sodomy. Our correspondent also gathered that while Ezeorji was a Senior Secondary School pupil 1 in Igando High School, Ikotun Road, Harrison had finished secondary school education. PUNCH Metrolearnt that the complainant, one Toheeb Adekunle, who stays on Muka Street, Ijegun Road and works inside the Ikotun Motor Park, caught the two boys in the act, and reported the matter to the police. Adekunle was said to have told the police that Harrison had the habit of sleeping with boys in the area. When our correspondent visited the area on Friday, a police source said the two boys had been taken to the State Criminal Investigations Department, Yaba, adding that they would be charged to court soon. At Ezeorji’s family apartment on Oladunjoye Street, Ikotun, his mother, Mrs. Chinyere Ezeorji, toldPUNCH Metrothat her son was a responsible boy who would never indulge in such an act. She added that he is still a virgin. She said, “My son is just 14 years old. He does not do such things. He is not even mature yet. He takes his bath outside, some times in the presence of his sisters to tell you that he is young. His father had died in September this year, and we have yet to bury him. The family is still grieving him. All I know is that there is no truth in the allegation. “I don’t know about the other man. I have not even met him. On the day of the alleged incident, my son had strolled to the motor park, and there was a street fight. My son then told me later on that he was simply watching the fight, and he had been arrested by the police.” When our correspondent visited Adekunle’s house address on Ijegun Road, his neighbours said he was no longer living in the place as he had moved to an unknown place in Ikotun. All efforts to also locate Harrison’s house or his family for comment were unsuccessful as of the time of this report. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, while confirming the arrest of the boys, said the suspects had also been charged to court. He said, “Yes, they were arrested by the Ikotun Police Division, and they have been charged to court. In law, this offence is called sodomy, and it carries with it about seven to 14 years imprisonment if found guilty, going by an Act of the National Assembly. “You know, it is even against culture and religion. The Christian, Islamic and even the traditional religions condemn this in its entirety. So, the case has been taken to court source:punch |

Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, has suspended its 11 months strike. This was disclosed by the President of the Union, Dr Chibuzor Asomugha,Saturday, after their National Executive Council, NEC, meeting held in Abuja. Speaking with Vanguard on telephone he said, “Our National Executive Council, NEC, met today (Saturday) and resolved to suspend the strike for three months starting from Tuesday next week.” Asomugha who said that the strike was suspended for three months explained that the consideration was to allow the new Education Minister, Alhaji Abrahim Shekarau study their demands and take appropriate action. He, therefore urged students and lecturers without further delay to go back to their classrooms. He said: “The decision to call off the strike is in consonance with the demand of the present Minister of Education, Alhaji Abrahim Shekarau to allow him study our demands.” According to the union leader, “all ASUP is asking for is that government makes commitment on when and how the issues will be resolved.’’ He did not state whether the Federal Government has however made any commitment before the suspension of the strike. You will recalled on Thursday last week after Shekarau was sworn-in as minister on Wednesday that he met with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP demand for time to study their demand. |

ASUP Strike 2014: Panel of Judges Recommends Removal Of HND, First Degree Disparity in Nigeria This will be a great news to all students of polytechnics whose institution is still participating in the strike, which was embarked upon by the union still October 2013. According to latest information reaching our news desk today, the Presidential Committee on NEEDS assessment of Nigerian Public Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, has once again, recommended the removal of dichotomy between Higher National Diploma, HND, and the university first degrees. Update about ASUP/COEASU meeting with Federal government The committee, which had in its report submitted to the Federal Government in Abuja, yesterday been the 1st of July 2014, also advised that the curriculum of polytechnics should be regularly reviewed to address changes in industry and the demand in society. While speaking on this issue, th Director, Tertiary Education, Federal Ministry of Education, and Chairperson of the committee, Mrs. Hindatu Abdullahi, said part of the recommendations was that the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE and National Universities Commission, NUC, should develop standards for the award of Bachelor of Technology, B.Tech, by the nation’s polytechnics. Mrs Hindatu Abdullahi went on to add that the panel/committee also recommended autonomy for deserving colleges of education to degree-awarding status, as well as increase enrollment of students into their programmes, which will also be good news to all admission seeking students, starting from this year. Here’s a quote from Mrs Hindatu Abdullahi which we decided to quote below. “The National Commission for Colleges of Education, NCCE, should ensure that all colleges of education running degree programmes should have not less than 60 per cent Ph.D holders of the total academic staff strength for each of the degree courses; and provision of Centres for Educational Technology, CET, with all the requisite facilities”. The report which was submitted to federal government from the committee also revealed that in the schools visited by the committee members, “all categories of physical facilities are grossly inadequate, while available ones are utiliaed beyond installed capacity. “Some vital learning resources are completely unavailable; which included the enrollment policy of 60:40 ratio for Science and Arts-based courses in Colleges of Education and 70:30 in favor of Science/ Technology and Arts/Social Sciences in polytechnics are not implemented. “In some institutions, the teacher-student ratio is low; most of the academic institutions do not have on-campus hostels, while the available ones are overcrowded, poorly lit and not adequately ventilated, and in a state of disrepair; municipal facilities are inadequate and in poor condition. “Based on these findings, the following recommendations cut across the polytechnics and colleges of education: Completion of abandoned and on-going projects; Rehabilitation and upgrading of facilities, buildings, hostels, class of study, infrastructures that are in the state of disrepair; provision and rehabilitation of students through public-private partnership. “Recruitment of qualified teachers and training/re-training of personnel; Provision and upgrading of internet connectivity, Tele-communication and information services; Provision of essential learning resources/ materials; All polytechnics and colleges should be linked to the National Power Grid and provide alternative/support of power in libraries, laboratories, workshops and studios; review of the laws establishing these institutions; the following recommendations are specific to polytechnics,” the report stressed. Mrs Hindatu Abdullahi also went on to inform that the report would assist the federal government in repositioning the academic institutions for effective and efficient teaching, learning research and community services, in line the federal government’s transformation agenda and global best practices for 2020. More details about the 1st of July meeting coming soon. |
