Governor Hope Uzodimma on Tuesday described the crisis that rocked Izombe Community in Oguta LGA on Friday, October 8, 2021, when soldiers in response to distress call from community members clashed with hoodlums, leading to the loss of one of the hoodlums and two soldiers, as bad and condemnable.

The Governor said this during a peace parley with critical stakeholders of the community, including traditional rulers, political leaders, women leaders, youth leaders and others, in Izombe, stressing there was need for peace.

He said: "Unfortunately this has happened. It is so sad. Your Royal Highness, I want to condole with you. We are here on a condolence visit, to identify with my brothers and sisters. What happened is very bad. It is condemnable. I must be with you because when I was struggling you were with me - when I was challenged you were with me, so if you are challenged, I will also be with you".

The Governor who took time to inspect the level of damage done in the community assured that the damaged properties would be reconstructed by the State Government.

"All those whose properties were destroyed, the Committee with some leaders will go round and take inventory - so that we can work out a way to help them reconstruct their homes and move back in.

"The Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission ( ISOPADEC) will bring relief materials to victims. The promise I am making to you is that I will not as your Governor allow Izombe people to suffer", said the Governor.

The Governor further said he was not in support of the crisis, adding: "I will never support anybody to kill anybody in Imo state. I will set up a committee that will come and assess the damages. Where the government will assist the owners, we will asist.

"I shed tears with what I have seen. A calamity has befallen Izombe. The wealth created by my brothers and sisters are burnt. Only God knows that I regard Izombe the same way I regard Omuma my place of birth. Hope Uzodimma is your brother. Please your anger should not boil over. I have told the army that the innocent must have peace. There must be peace in Izombe, there must be peace in Imo State - there must be peace in Nigeria.

"Let us all rise in honour of the soldiers and civilians who lost their lives over this crisis. Let us give them a minute of silence. May their souls through the mercy of God rest in peace".

The Governor also tasked the community leaders to rise up and speak up against those fomenting trouble in the communities

"I am pained. Izombe community has stood by me throughout my political career. If there is any community in Imo State where civilization should be resident, it is in Izombe community. Izombe is a community where we have so many wise men.

"Where are our leaders. Why are you keeping quiet. These youths are our brothers. I am not going to kill them. I will want them to repent and tell us why they have taken to crime. We are wasting time with too many quarrels. Let us come together.

"Look at the homes belonging to our kinsmen who suffered to make a living - now burnt. As if it is not enough, they are even afraid to come back home. Must we continue to live this way? Is it not time for us to change? We just have to change because what is bad is bad and what is not acceptable in a society is not acceptable.

"I want to plead with all of us to interrogate our consciences and drop those things that are not helping the society - that will not help our community, and embrace those things that will bring unity, peace and order in the community so that development can come.

"If we don't have the good environment here, there will be no development. We need prayers - we need the intervention of God", he said.

Great indignation has greeted the alleged murder of a young man in Umunakanu community, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, by policemen who later labeled him a ‘member’ of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

According to witnesses, police operatives shot the victim, one Chigozie Nwaiwu, in his friend’s welding shop at close range in the presence of many witnesses but later declared him a wanted IPOB member who had been leading attacks on security personnel and facilities in the state.

The owner of the workshop, Uchenna Chukwuanyanwu, popularly known as Son of Iron, who was a childhood friend of the deceased, was also arrested by the police.

It was gathered that Nwaiwu had visited his bosom friend at his workshop when suddenly a Venza car pulled up in the area and its occupants quickly grabbed the welder and threw him into the car.



According to a source, “They were about to drive off when Nwaiwu asked them why they were taking his friend away. The occupants of the car, who were in mufti, shot him on the forehead, killing him instantly and zoomed off.

“As people gathered to see what had happened, the same car returned and the frightened onlookers took to their heels. The car occupants picked up Nwaiwu’ corpse and dumped it in the car and zoomed off again.”

However, the people were shocked to read a statement by the police, claiming that the late Nwaiwu was a member of IPOB.

According to the statement by the Police spokesperson, Mike Abattam, in Owerri Friday, October 8, 34-year-old Nwaiwu was described as IPOB champion, who played a major role in the killing of Police officers and burning of Police stations in Imo and had long been declared wanted by the police and was arrested following credible information.


It further said the police also killed an IPOB member who joined other members to frustrate the arrest of the kingpin.

The statement read, “The suspect raised the alarm, alerting members of his gang, picked a cutlass and rushed at one of the Police operatives and attempted chopping off his head but was overpowered, disarmed and the cutlass recovered.

“While this was on, the already alerted members who came in their numbers to rescue him engaged the Police in a gun duel and in the process, one of them was neutralised while others escaped with bullet wounds.”



Abattam added that one locally-made double barrel pistol with two expended cartridges; two live cartridges and charms were recovered at the scene, adding that the suspect was presently undergoing interrogation and had made useful statement to the police.

He said the police was collaborating with sister security agencies to arrest other members of the group, especially those that escaped with bullet wounds.

However, this claim has been widely rejected by the community, who knew the victims and contradicted the police statement. They described the duo as very hardworking young men, who were always mobilising youth in the community to help out widows.

“The community knows who is who and these young boys are some of the best. The one the Police shot at close range is a graduate of a Polytechnic who is looking for a job and keeping busy with helping out at the friend’s shop.

“Our community has been thrown into mourning because of the incident,” a source who craved anonymity said.

Investigations have revealed that the security operatives who came could have come from DSS. Their target was actually one Chidera, an aluminium worker, who owns a shop close to Uchenna’s.

Chigozie was shot to death simply because he insisted to know the reason Uchenna was abducted.

The community is angered by the press release made by the police, labeling Uchenna as the leader of IPOB in Ehime Mbano, which they describe as lies from the pit of hell to justify their actions.

It was gathered that they were rallying round to petition the Inspector General of Police to investigate the extra-judicial killing of Nwaiwu and also to secure the release of Chukwuanyanwu.

Imo state police command says it has killed a suspected member of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB while another, Uchenna Chukwu, 34, a native of Umunakanu in Ehime Mbano LGA of the State was arrested.

CSP Michael Abattam, PPRO of the command in a statement on Friday made available to ABN TV said the arrest of Chukwu, who has been on the wanted list of the police after participating in several terror operations follows a piece of credible information.

He said on the 6th of October, 2021 at about 1630 hours, (4:30pm) the police mobilised and stormed the suspect's shop.

He said, "On sighting the police operatives he raised alarm alerting other members of his gang, picked a cutlass, and rushed at one of the police operatives attempted chopping off his head but was overpowered, disarmed and the cutlass recovered from him."

On how another suspect was killed, the police spokesman said, "While this was on, the already alerted members came in their number and engaged the police operatives in a gun duel but were overwhelmed by the superior firing power of the police and in the process, one of them was neutralized while others escaped with bullet wounds into hiding."

He listed items recovered from the deceased to include one locally made double barrel pistol with two expended cartridges, two live cartridges, and the charms he tied round his waist to fortify himself against police bullet.

He added that the arrested suspect is presently undergoing interrogation and has made a useful statement to the investigating team revealing their hideout and the abode of other members of his gang on the run.

Pandemonium broke out at the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, this morning August 19 after suspected cultists shot a student dead at a cafeteria within the school campus, Reports.

According to Reports, the suspected cultists had trailed the victim to a cafeteria near the faculty of management science about 9:20am, where he was killed.

”He died on the spot and the situation caused serious panic. Students and people started running helter-skelter and we are writing exams now.”he said.

Confirming the incident To , the spokesperson of the university, Harcourt Whyte, said the assailants have been arrested while the police have commenced an investigation into the matter.
