At 38, a postgraduate diploma in healthcare might work for college admission, but for IRCC visa purposes, it’s not ideal unless you can get into a master’s program.

IRCC looks at things differently: they want immigrants who can start working and contributing to CPP and OAS quickly.

Younger people in 20s studying 2–4 years and then working are preferred.

With your Healthcare Assistant certificate but no recent work experience, IRCC would likely see the strongest path as pursuing a master’s degree, finishing quickly, and getting a higher-paying job to contribute to the system.

I was told earlier during my application that the last day to submit documents is July 1 meaning there is still time so why 10 days ultimatum.

Write to the school and see what they have to say about holding your admission for you.

The 10-day period they give is to confirm that you are serious and to secure your spot, because they have other applicants on the waiting list...it’s business for them, nothing personal.

Some schools offer admission quickly but expect you to pay the initial deposit so they can secure your commitment.

They don’t want you waiting for admission from another school. That’s why they require the first payment in 10 days to keep you hooked

to show that you are serious and intend to accept their offer.

Remember, it’s business for them, and they want to know the number of students they can expect.

You should be aware that during the process of switching programs, you are required to apply for a new study permit for the new program.

You will also need to clearly explain to IRCC why you want to switch after only a few months.

Do not take this lightly....IRCC is very quick to refuse applications, especially when someone switches from a higher level of education to a lower one.

This is why IRCC introduced the rule that if you are switching schools or programs (even within the same school), you must apply for a new study permit.

It’s time to stop relying on outdated information and old mindsets.

I received an offer of admission for a post graduate study starting in September 2026. I was requested to pay a deposit within 10 days and my funds will only be available in about two Months. How do I navigate this issue? Can I email the school or what could be done in this regard.

You can ask your school to defer your admission to January 2027

The payment they are requesting is an initial deposit, which schools collect to confirm that you are serious about accepting the offer. It can also help during your visa processing, so they usually cannot wait without the deposit and the deposit is also about 15% of your first year fee

You will receive a Passport Request (PPR) letter in your IRCC account or by email..I can’t remember which one comes first. The letter usually comes quickly, and it will include instructions on how to submit your passport at the VFS office at lekki.

Yes, that’s your Express Entry profile, and it does not prevent you from also applying for a student visa.

It’s important to understand the context of your goal. If you are trying to move her permanently, then Express Entry is your best option provided your CRS points are high enough even for healthcare.

However, if your goal is simply to leave the U.S. due to the current visa instability and the Trump-related uncertainties, then coming to Canada through school is an option. That said, I will be honest....you will likely find the process frustrating as its not as easy as it looks on the surface but its very possible

If you are considering lower-cost schools,

(1) Memorial University of Newfoundland is one of the best options, Known for very low tuition even for international students

(2) University of Manitoba Good nursing programs much Lower living costs than Ontario/BC

(3) University of Saskatchewan Master of Nursing (Master’s; sometimes NP stream)

(4) Cape Breton University

(5) Dalhousie University

(6) University of Alberta Strong program, sometimes research funding available

When you did your medical exam, were you given a UCI (Unique Client Identifier) number? to go to the hospital by your ex husband

If yes, before you apply to Canada again...whether for school or anything else...it is very important to understand what your ex-husband previously did with your immigration profile. You need to confirm whether there is any ban or misrepresentation on your file.

If there is an issue on your profile, no matter how many visas you apply for or how much money you have, your applications will continue to be refused. I suspect your ex-husband may have made mistakes or caused problems with your file. It’s best to find out before taking any further steps.

You should request GCMS notes, and someone can help guide you through the process.

To request them, you will need:

(1) Full name and date of birth (as used on the application..... likely under your ex-husband’s submission)
(2) Application number.....i believe you can get that if it was not an upfront medical exam

You might have some options, especially since you already have a PhD, so school might not be your only route.

If you’re thinking about studying, most of the time, master’s programs and postgraduate diplomas have similar fees..usually just a few thousand dollars difference..so it often doesn’t make sense to go for a postgraduate diploma. I usually see the difference around $4,000, and I know you’d likely be looking at a program longer than a year to qualify for a longer post-graduate work permit.

For the most part, we’re talking about the more cost-effective master’s option.

By the way, does your husband already have his PR? Just asking as you might have already qualified for PR with out knowing

Bill C-12 is designed to:
(1) Reduce late asylum claims
(2) Limit access to IRB hearings ( which is seeing an immigration judge)
(3) Shift more cases to PRRA ( Close long-standing delay and appeal loopholes which will increase deportation )

I think I may have complicated the matter by choosing the option that I would not give biometrics because my existing biometrics are valid until September 2026. Unfortunately, my visa application was denied then around 2016 and biometrics valid for 10years

My biometrics are still valid until September 2026, but I have recently obtained a new passport with a 10-year validity and I attached a new passport to the document when I am submitting the neccessary document. I am not sure whether the visa office considers the passport validity period or the biometrics validity date when issuing a visa.

If they rely on the biometrics validity, I may only be granted a visa of about five or six months if my application is approved.

Can I raise a webform to draw their attention to the fact that I am now willing to give new biometrics, even though I initially selected the option not to? I hope this will not be seen as a red flag, or should I just remain calm and wait for now? Please, I need your advice.

Yesterday, Sunday 12th January, someone on this platform who is well known responded when I asked a simple question about how to track the progress of my application on the IRCC portal that I submitted my visa application on 20th December. Within seconds of posting my message, the person contacted me on WhatsApp, took screenshots of my messages, and claimed he could track my application for a fee.

I was surprised because I have never shared my WhatsApp number on this platform. Please let us all be mindful and cautious. There are many scammers here pretending to offer help while seeking personal information to scam people. I blocked the person immediately.

With a PGD she might still get a visa if she argues her case properly but then there is no room for family even if she has the money. Best option is to go for a program of choice, leave the children behind if possible, go to a province with ease of PNP which she can easily get with her PhD, then come back to take the kids.

But make sure it's a university PGD not a college PGD

Profgordons is right that choosing a province with easier PNP pathways can help, and having a PhD gives you more options...even though no PNP is truly “easy.”

However, I don’t generally support doing a PGD unless it is directly related to your previous studies (and preferably from a university, not a college). Even then, it’s difficult, and you must clearly justify to IRCC why you’re doing a PGD in Canada instead of the UK, US, or elsewhere, and why not another Master’s degree.

Let nobody lie to you. You will get admission because schools want international student fees, but the visa will be very difficult.

You have a PhD and you want to do a PGD, not even a master’s degree.

Look at it this way: IRCC will have one main question.....why would someone with a PhD want to do a PGD?

That usually signals that the person does not genuinely intend to study. The school becomes just a pathway to enter Canada with her kids.

So, to answer your question: yes, relocation with your kids is possible only if (which is unlikely) you are going for a master’s degree.

Relocating with three kids as a student is very difficult.

Daycare costs are high, you are limited to 24 hours of work per week, unemployment is rising, and PR pathways are unstable. Be very sure before making any move.

As for budget: because you are coming with your kids, your proof of funds should cover living expenses plus full school fees.

That is $42,543 (living expenses.) plus your school fees (which average international student fee masters program is about $35,000 for the full program 2 years) total $77,543 CAD

Note: Some people will tell you or suggest that you only need to show one year of tuition. But if you are coming to Canada with three kids, it is much better to show proof of funds for the full school fees.

Showing full tuition gives your application a much stronger case than showing just one year.

However, the $42,543 is non-negotiable and must be shown regardless.

I can't do it before I travel as I will not have a Canadian bank account yet, you can't use bank apps to do cross border transfers. Ask your Nigerian bank how you can make an overseas transfer when you’re not physically in Nigeria.

For example, I know Access Bank (formerly Diamond Bank) has limits on transfers when you’re outside Nigeria via their online banking account

Once you get to Canada and open a bank account, you can then instruct your Nigerian bank to transfer the funds to you ask them some banks say online you can do it.

In the meantime, it’s also a good idea to get a dollar debit card from your bank, as it can be very helpful for spending money abroad.

It’s better to focus on how much your school has asked you to pay as the initial deposit (usually about 15% of the first-year tuition, and it’s refundable if the visa is refused). Once that payment is made, you can show the remaining tuition balance along with your living expenses in your or sponsor bank account.

You can also take some time to read up on what a bank draft really is.

If you have someone in Canada, that person can act as your sponsor and make a bank draft to pay the initial deposit to the school. The payment receipt after paying to the school can then be used for visa purposes. Other than that, there may not be much need to focus on bank drafts.

Mum is a pensioner but has approximately 4m in her account. My brother’s bank balance isn’t much too its about 2, 800 cad tho he intends to submit his paystub together with the application.

Now this is my question… on the invitation letter is it ok to state he is sponsoring my mum’s trip and all expenses incurred during the visit or the letter should state my mum would take care of her flight ticket from her own funds while my brother covers the rest?

I am asking this question because of the level of funds involved as we are not sure if paystub alone will suffice for my brother to act as a sponsor or the bank balance must be high too.

Sponsorship means you are Financial obligations for the person you are sponsoring

which means if your brother is sponsoring he needs way more than 2, 800 cad

Paystubs are helpful, but IRCC does not rely on paystubs alone bank balance still matters . Overstating sponsorship when funds don’t support it can hurt the application badly as it shows he can not afford it with his balance ..

In this situation, it’s better NOT to state that your brother is fully sponsoring your mum’s trip. With a bank balance of about CAD 2,800, even if he submits paystubs, claiming full sponsorship can raise questions for IRCC...

Your Nigerian bank (preferably a USD account) knows how to do wire transfers.

In my case, I had trusted family in Canada, so I was able to send money from Nigeria to Canada before I entered the country.

But I carried half in cash. I can’t send my CV, sorry.
