PoliticsRe: Progressive Taxation And Exam Score Redistribution by angel101(f): 12:09pm On May 23, 2007
Seun:
I wonder if we can apply the same logic a different field: WAEC and NECO exams:
"Is it fair to allow brilliant JAMBites attending good private schools to score above 90% in their WASSCE and NECO exams when they only need 75% to score the highest grade (A1)? Why not take those excess marks and distribute them to dull students who, because they are too poor to attend good schools, end up scoring less than 40F in the exams? Why not take the 'excess' 15% from Mary Smart and add it to John Dull's below 40% score so he can also pass?

We can also apply it to the JAMB/UME Exam: Is it fair to allow extremely brilliant students to score above 300 marks in the University Matriculation Exam when they only need maybe 280 marks to beat the cut-off mark? Why not take their 'excess marks' and award them to poor students who have failed to score above 200 marks?

Let us refer to this innovative idea of mine as Exam Score Redistribution. If it is fair to tax rich people at a higher rate than poor people in order to redistribute wealth, why can't we also redistribute exam scores?

If it's inhumane to suggest that rich people shouldn't be taxed more, isn't it also inhumane to suggest that over-brilliant students shouldn't be taxed on their excess scores? How will very dull students ever pass their exams?
and ur point is?
are u suggesting that students' exam scores be arbitrarily reduced? or that scores should be awarded to a possibly blank sheet (john dull's) pls help me understand. cos right now, u aint making the slightest sense.

MAMAJAMA:
No offense, it just get old when people blame our leaders for all the issues in Nigeria.  what about the people at the banks wanting kickbacks before they help you open account?
kick back to open account? thats news to me.

MAMAJAMA:
what about the hotel guest that is looking up for a tip for doing their jobs?
i guess u meant hotel staff? happens more in america.

MAMAJAMA:
DO you know how many people die from strange illness in the state everyday? you don't see the media here insinuating that life expectancy in America is 44 or some illusion number. we have people that are taking their HERB on regular basis.
do u realise that people still die in nigeria from malaria! and child birth?

Big B1:
The bottom line is "government or leaders must do their part to improve standard of living in Nigeria".

What sense does it make if you live up to 101 years, but struggle to eat 2 meals a day since the age of 15 years old?

I call it dead people walking around for a very long time.
absolutely spot on.

MAMAJAMA:
Big B1 I disagree with you on that statement
"What sense does it make if you live up to 101 years, but struggle to eat 2 meals a day since the age of 15 years old?"

All that glitter is not gold, do you know it requires 2 family income and a per time job to live comfortable in the United state?
u are talking of comfort. we are talking of survival

MAMAJAMA:
True, but at what expense are we paying for all this luxury that we enjoy in America? do you know what TAX is? how many people are willing to pay tax in Nigeria and not cut CORNER as it is so called?

not until we implement a creditable tax system and educate the people on various issues then Nigeria will never change.
again we are talking of survival not luxury. and why should i be willing to pay tax when i do not recieve the services my tax is meant to pay for. besides a fraction of nigerians do pay tax. everyone in coporate employment has tax deducted at source.

@angel101:

1. Do you truly understand the real meaning of violence and what repercussion of violence could do to a country? If you do, please post your annotation and list the anticipations of your suggestion.

2. Do you understand that the outcome of violence is never predictable?

3. Did you vote and where do you currently reside?

4. Do you have any plans to participate or lead this violence crusade you're suggesting?

Sweetheart, in order for me to profoundly understand your state of mind and effectively respond to your incredible suggestion, please answer these questions.
Because it is very unusual to discover a sister running around promoting violence

I look forward to reading your next post.

Thanks.

BigB1
if u indeed read my posts u would have seen the answers to these ur questions but i will try and answer them again.

1 i understand violence and the repercusion. i also understand that the people in power in nigeria are all cowards who would flee once they realise that it wont be an easy ride and so i believe that this is the medicine they require. or have u forgotten the buhari/idiagbon regime?

2 the outcome of violence is never predictable neither is the outcome of limbo

3 i currently reside in london and yes i did vote.

4 i am currently in the process of moving back to nigeria and so yes i will join in the struggle to return nigeria to nigerians. ( u were almost right on that)

cheers
@angel101

So what exactly are you suggesting that should happen between today and
the weeks ahead other than rallying behind Yar Adua, but engaging his government
to work towards reforming the electoral process and educating the electorate (and
the politicians too)?
y do we have the mentality of 'this is my lot. i have to accept it'? we can protest thats what we can do.

if yaradua came into power in a 'do or die' fashion what makes u think that u can 'engage' his govt to do anything?

my analogy about illegitimate children stemmed directly from ur question about y the incoming govt was being called illegitimate. and besides where the father of the child might accept the child, the wife more often than not doesnt. grin
no doubt illegitimate children may have made meaningful contributions but they are still illegitimate.

@ Angel 101
why are you comparing Ghana to Nigeria? Did you know what went down overthere during this struggle? Are you sure what worked in Ghana will definitely work in Nigeria. Do you remember the Influx of our Ghanaian brothers/sisters into Nigeria during their struggling days?
i compared nigeria to ghana cos u or someone else made a statement that violence has never worked in africa. what went down in ghana during the struggle cannot be more than nigerians have been and are still suffering today. dont take ur personal circumstance as a yard stick if i did that i wont need to complain at all afterall i have alternatives but why should we as a country consent to this unjust and unecessary suffering being handed us by the wicked ones in power?
i do remember the influx of ghanians during their struggle but do u realise that the whole world has an influx of nigerians seeking economic refuge?

no i am not sure wether or not what worked for ghana will work for us, but i am certain that the 'sit down look' attitude that we have used used for so long will NOT work!

Colonia:
Lets assume we want to protest this new election,
1. Who will lead this protest?
2. Who will sponsor the protest?
3.Do you think there can be a peaceful demonstration? If so, will it be effective
4. Does anybody care if there is a protest? i.e in the government remember June 12!!! we all protested
5.Whether we go to court or protest the government will still have the final say.
these very questions being asked by the average nigerian is the reason why we are where we are today. it is why they govt know that they can do whatever and no one will have the courage to stand up to them.

Colonia:
5.Whether we go to court or protest the government will still have the final say.
y does it have to be so? if the people of the developed countries had this mind set, they will be in the same position as we are today. humans by nature are opportunistic and will take liberties if they are able to.

naijaway:
Obj to me got a 55% pass mark from me because most of the things he accomplished were not now now type of things, it is long term and solid foundation that have to be maintained and expanded. Eventhough, he did not make light efficient, he has already laid the long term foundation for power in all ways from natural gas, hydro, solar, ethanol, etc.
He also messed up in internal security, chain of command in the government, somehow in foreign policy because everyone outside knows our secrets, and oviously the presidential elections.
On the good sides, because he tried not to act too desperate so that nigeria don't get ripped off, he took time but planned for the future in the technological arena, the peacekeeping arena, the corruption arena by binging what they all did to light which sometimes backfired but he did bring it to light sha, being transparent than ever before, freedom of speech and press like never before, bringing back the prestige of the nation from 1 to 6 where 10 is the highest, by giving Nigeria a structure in organizations internally and externally, by people being patriotic like never before even when is not much, by taming the military and at the same time fighting all the bad belle people.
His first speech in '99 was give honor where honor is due.
i personally had no faith in OBJ from the onset so my only suprise is that people are suprised. look back at his previous attempt at leading and u will agree with me.

he may have laid down some long term reforms as is being sold now to the people but even that is the action of an insensitive leader. after the decades of misrule and suffering under the military would it not have made sense to implement a few or even 1 policy that would affect the common man on the street?
OBJ as far as i am concerned is good riddance to utter rubbish!

i rest my case.

PoliticsRe: We, Nigerians Should Rally Around President Yar'Adua by angel101(f): 1:56pm On May 22, 2007
who won the elections is not the issue but how it was conducted.
@BigB1
when i say violence is the answer, i dont mean we should go about killing each other for the sake of some selfish politicians but for our own sakes and the sake of my unborn children. people are already needlessly getting killed everyday as a result of mis governance anyway, so my point is these lives should not be lost in vain something positive should come out of it. the developed nations of this world have been thru this same stages and came out the way they have cos they fought without which they would still be within the strong hold of their rulers.

yes the families of these politicians have left the country but if they do return in a few months, it will be to find that power has changed hands if we do the right thing which is to fight for our right.

working together with yaradua towards a common goal wil no doubt be the answer if only it will happen. i think it is rather arrogant to say that we should all follow u to support yaradua and his govt simply becos u are confident that he will not dissappoint. is it all about u then?
u say there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel. i agree, we must go thru the tunnel though to reach the bright light.
yes the UK and US are supporting yaradua. do u think its becos they love him or the country? guess again. just like they went to find weapons of mass destruction in iraq!

@IykeD
our lack of sincere leaders can only change if we take drastic action

@Imani
there's no point having a go at me cos i am posting from london as i see u are in the UK as well. doesnt prevent me from airing my views about MY country. and anyway i got off my ass and went to nigeria for the elections. yes i did!

@colonial
did Ghana not settle their issues by violence?
PoliticsRe: Propose A Solution To The Niger-delta Crisis by angel101(f): 12:06pm On May 22, 2007
first off, it is very condescending to say that if resource control is given to the ND it will be mismanaged. whose place is it to judge that? in any case i dont see a better job being done now.
one poster thinks the FG should monitor the achievements of the states and then according to perfomance increase the percentage of control given. lame argument if u ask me. are u proposing some sort of big brother state?
ok at the moment, the militants are pointing fingers at th FG and kidnapping people cos they think they are being unfairly treated. why dont we give them control of their God given resources and let them pay taxes to the centre. the FG can then decide to give kano state 10% of what they get. and then when the ND leaders mess up like nigeria thinks they will, who will the militants direct their anger towards? yes the people in control who will then be the Alams of that time. then justice can truly be done.
