PoliticsRe: African Countries Happy Over President Jonathan’s Defeat – Obasanjo by anigold(m): 9:45pm On Apr 24, 2015
Novaworld:
Former president, Olusegun obasanjo, on Thursday said countries across the african continent are happy over the outcome of the presidential election in Nigeria, which saw the defeat of incumbent president Goodluck jonathan.

Mr. obasanjo said his checks in a number of african countries suggested they were as happy over the result of the election as majority of Nigerians are.

He referred to president Goodluck jonathan as a moving train who was providentially stopped from collapsing Nigeria.
“I have visited six countries since the election, they are as happy about the results as we are in Nigeria. It is good not only for Nigeria, it is good for Africa and I believe it is good for the world.”

Mr. obasanjo, who led the african Union Observation Mission to the April 2015 General Election in Sudan, spoke on Thursday at a Washington DC event.

The former president described Nigeria as a country that obsessively plays “a dangerous game of moving close to the precipice”.

He said the country came close to disintegration in the run-up to the 2015 elections but switched swiftly to the path of redemption after the polls.

“I hope we will not fall over one of these days,” he said.

He said one month to the election, no one believed “we will have a peaceful election that is reasonably free and fair.”

Describing his role in the election as that of a person standing on the track of a moving train, the former president said during the countdown to the elections, he faced the option of “jumping off” the tracks or “be crushed” if the train did not providentially get “derailed and stop.”

He said he did not jump and was not crushed adding that “at every stage, there must be leaders imbued with sufficient courage and will to stand firm when you have to stand firm.”

He described the results of the elections as what Nigerians “deserve” though some Nigerians “did not want it”.

Mr. obasanjo was the featured speaker at the United States Institute for Peace (USIP) event titled What is Right with Africa: Reframing Africa’s Leadership Challenges.

He made these remarks in response to a question by Princeton Lyman, a former ambassador to Nigeria.

Mr. obasanjo observed that Nigeria’s tendency to flirt with near-death experiences stretches back to colonial times when it almost cost the country the chance of gaining political independence from Britain.

Recalling colonial-era disagreements over self-rule, the former president said at a stage, advocates of self-rule from the Eastern and Western Regions decided to “let the North go” since their leaders were reluctant to accept regional autonomy back then.

“But reason prevailed,” he said, “East and West got internal autonomy in 1957, North got same in 1959 and the whole country got independence in 1960.”

Listing the 1964 post-election violence in the south west and the 1966 coup d’etats which led to “pogrom and civil war” as other self-destructive phases in the country’s history, the former president remarked that Nigeria emerged from all of these as “one entity” in spite of contrarian speculations.

“Not only did we survive the civil war but, within nine years, somebody from the rebel side, as we called them, and somebody from the vandal side, as they called us, became president and vice-president of Nigeria. Not many countries achieve that,” he said.

president obasanjo described the 2015 election as “almost in the same category” as other near-death experiences in Nigeria’s history.

He said one month to the election, no one believed “we will have a peaceful election that is reasonably free and fair.”

“I think we are now building institutions that can withstand what we may see as danger to good governance in Africa. The election has moved Nigeria one very important step up in our democratic dispensation, process and practice.”

No matter what one must commend OBJ's tenacity in saying the truth and daring the consequences once he holds unto an ideal.
Very few leaders in the world would come out and say they made a mistake in their imposition of a ruler(though fostered too by circumstances), and would go the full hog to reverse that mistake.
At a point in time before the elections one could perceive that for OBJ ensuring that GEJ does not return to totally wreck Nigeria, was one battle he was ready to give his life for.
I think OBJ was one of those who used his vast international influence to ensure that the major foreign powers openly spoke out, warning GEJ of dire consequences of derailing the process leading to the elections and interfering with the outcome once his loss was all but confirmed.

Dear Mr. Xenophobia,

At first I thought your letter was emotionally sensible until I took my time to read through. It is such a huge shame that you lazy people are blaming others for your woes.

You made it look as if all foreigners especially Nigerians who reside in your country are all into illegal/shady businesses... that's a sign of inferiority complex, witchcraft and wizardry, envy etc...

If all these frivolous points of yours are true, why didn't your government not come up with policies to checkmate all the illegal shop owners?

For the record, Nigerians are not running away to your country as postulated by you. The bokoharam menace is only confined to a certain threshold which is very small. Go back and study Geography of Africa and that of Nigeria especially.

Obviously, your people are very lazy and are not employable; else why would most companies/firm/organizations in SA employ Nigerians more than your people? If it's true though.

In the case of skill acquisition, it is glaringly obvious that your people are too lazy to acquire skills to go out and hustle like other foreigners there.

In terms of business or market competition, I'd rather your people should sit down, think and come up with innovative ideas on how to attract customers and climb the ladder of success instead of lagging behind and blaming others for their woes.

By the way, crime cannot thrive in a place without the contribution of indigenes.

If you must know, our GDP is far better than yours, so I wonder where you get this your irrelevant ideas of your economy being better than ours from.

Foreigners are everywhere; your people, Chinese, Americans, Indians, Europeans etc are all thriving well on the Nigerian soil, so feel that your country is that important.

Are you telling me that the 4 foreigners who lost their lives to your demonic xenophobic attacks were criminals? If yes, what was their crimes? Which of your courts convicted/sentenced them to death by mob attack.

Hahahahahaha... How do you expect multinationals to employ people who pronounces Worker as Weka? grin just kidding.

Please you need more education.

PoliticsRe: N40 Pump Fuel Price Is My Figure, Not Buhari’s, Says David-west by anigold(m): 1:49pm On Apr 24, 2015
zeekz:
IBADAN—FORMER Petroleum Minister and Professor of Virology, Professor Tam David-West, has said there was never a time the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), said he would reduce the pump price of fuel to N40 per litre as reported some days ago.

The don, who spoke with Vanguard in his residence in Ibadan, explained that the N40 per litre was his own preferred pump fuel price and should not have been attributed to Buhari.

He said: “I wish to correct a wrong impression carried in the newspapers, entitled, “Buhari’ll reduce petrol to N40-David West.” I did not make such categorical statement and I’m sure that Gen. Buhari will agree with me that I could not have made such a categorical statement.

“Gen. Buhari and I have said it times without number that the phenomenon called subsidy is fraudulent. N40 per litre is my own figure which I have repeatedly used in all my write-ups and interviews.”

However, while alluding to a comment made by a Texas professor, who said petrol should sell for N35 per litre, he said it was possible for the price of fuel to be reduced drastically if all four refineries were serviced to produce at maximum capacity, adding that for now, the refineries were performing at minimum capacity.

One of the antidotes that could make life more comfortable for Nigerians, he said, was the complete removal of middlemen who import fuel, noting that fuel importation must stop.

“Nigeria can go directly to refinery owners. We have done it before during Buhari’s time.” When asked if he could serve in the petroleum sector if invited or recommend anyone who could be of service to Nigerians, the erudite professor said it was God “who directs him and leads him on what to do next.
“In 1990, I wrote on sabotage theory of Nigeria’s refineries which was published by Vanguard. Our refineries can work, but some people sabotage the refineries. It is not because we don’t have Nigerians who can repair it and turn things around. If that fails, the people who built refineries can repair it. If people in government do it, there will be no more importation of fuel.

“I respect Gen. Buhari because he has much integrity and I believe that he would be a good leader. It is true that expectations of Nigerians are very high. No new leader can perform miracles. People should give him time and conducive atmosphere to perform. I don’t believe in 100 days in office, it is nonsense. If you are packing from one house to a new one, will 100 days be enough to settle down. How do you expect a sudden turn-around within 100 days when so much damage has been done for years.

“But, it will not take too long before Nigeria would experience that change they crave for. Between the first six months and one year, people would feel that positive change,” he said.

On the defeat of President Goodluck Jonathan at the polls, he said he felt so happy that he lost, adding, “I have never supported him and I will not support him because I am an Ijaw man. His policies are very bad,” he maintained.

MichaelSokoto:
The All Progressives Congress on Wednesday formally shut its doors against members of the Peoples Democratic Party wishing to join its ranks.

The party also enjoined members and leaders of the ruling party to stay put where they are and rebuild their party to play its new found role as the main opposition party.

It admonished the PDP to come to terms with the cold, hard reality that its fortunes have since plummeted and that it is now in opposition.

The APC made its position public in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in Abuja.

According to the APC, the leadership of the PDP is not even waiting to be approached before fleeing to the APC.

Mohammed said, “PDP leaders and members are falling over themselves shamelessly and swearing undying allegiance to the APC.

“Well, in case they did not get the message of the President-elect and our National Chairman, we want to repeat it in very blunt terms: PDP leaders and members, you are not welcome in APC.

“Please stay in your party, but if – as we suspect – you cannot survive in opposition, then, take a walk, quit politics.”Mohammed was reacting to a communiqué issued by the PDP, in which it alleged that the APC was harassing its members and that it was trying to turn Nigeria into one party state.

The APC said the fact that the PDP devoted a substantial part of the communiqué, issued after the inaugural meeting of the its National Working Committee and Governors/Senators-elect, complaining about alleged harassment and intimidation by the APC, instead of strategizing, shows that it was yet to come to terms with the reality on ground.

It also observed that the out-going ruling party still does not understand the enormity of the challenges awaiting it as an opposition party.Mohammed said, “The truth of the matter is that the PDP is scared stiff of being in opposition. We don’t blame them as they have neither the capacity nor the commitment to be in opposition.

“A party that stood for nothing but looting and rent collection will naturally be afraid of being in opposition, where there is nothing to loot or rent to collect.”The APC also admonished the PDP to stop whining over an alleged plan by the APC to use the Election Petition Tribunals ‘to truncate and subvert the freely given mandate by the people in the states and constituencies’, saying it amounts to blackmail.

Xtracoool:
A 55- year-old retired civil servant, Mr Emmanuel Osuya, has asked an Igando Customary Court, Lagos, to dissolve his 32-year-old marriage over alleged battering by his wife. Osuya told the court on Wednesday that his wife, Abigeal Osuya, 50, had turned him into a punching bag.

He said she beat him on any slight provocation. Osuya told the court that his wife always threatened his life through battery that he was afraid she may kill him one day. “My wife wants to kill me; she beat me almost every day with dangerous weapons. On three occasions, she broke my leg, preventing me from going out for days,’’ he said.

Osuya also accused his wife of turning his children against him, thereby making them to hate him. “Abigeal succeeded in creating enmity between me and my children, she tells them false and damaging stories about me in order to hate me. “So my children only care for her by sending her money and other items every month, without extending their love to me, they always ignore me as if I do not exist,’’ Osuya said.

The petitioner described his wife as a thief. He said that she always stole his money, rendering him financially broke. “I cannot keep money at home again because my wife will steal it. “ She acted as if she is not always satisfied with the money I give her in spite of the fact that my children always send her money every month,’’ the petitioner said.

Osuya said that Abigeal always starved him of food. He appealed to the court to dissolve the marriage, saying that “I am no longer interested in the marriage, I don’t want to die now, more so that I am out of love’’. Abigeal denied all the allegations. The mother of five said that she had never beaten her husband since the day she married him.

She said that it was her husband that always beat her. “It was my husband that always beat me on any slight provocation, I have never beaten him,” she said. The respondent also said that she had never stolen her husband’s money. Abigeal said that she used to cook for her husband wherever he gave her money for food.

She asked the court not to grant her husband’s prayer. “I am still in love with him,’’ she said. The Court President, Mr Hakeem Oyekan, adjourned the case till April 30 for further hearing.

SleekyP:
Bashir Abdullahi, a witness of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the ongoing trial of Patrick Fernandez, an Indian businessman before a Federal High Court in Lagos, on Tuesday gave graphic details of how the accused defrauded some Nigerian banks to the tune of N32 billion.

Fernandez is standing trial alongside three of his companies on a 56 count-charge of fraud.

The witness, who is a former investigator with the EFCC, told the court that the commission learned of the fraud when one of the banks contacted the agency’s Financial Intelligence Unit.

According to him, in July 2008, he was assigned to investigate the case of suspicious financial activities involving Fernandez and his companies.

The affected banks, he said, were Zenith Bank, Afribank, Intercontinental Bank, Union Bank and Wema Bank. His investigations, he said, revealed high volume transactions from one account to another, which he said were suspected to be fraudulent.

Abdullahi said: “In our findings, we discovered that the accused was involved in cheque-kitting and round tripping. It is also known as Lazy Susan, a business model.”

Lazy Susan, he said, involves members of a business group transferring money from one sister company to another without selling any commodity, using money obtained from other banks.

He said as at September 2007, the accused had less than N2million in his account. “The volume of transaction was also minimal, starting with N20million. Within the same month, it rose to N600million. The volume of transaction also sky rocketed to billions of naira within just three months,” he said.

Abdullahi said the transactions involved the use of “suspended cheques” which did not go through the clearing house initially.

“If he brings a cheque, credit will be given to him immediately without going through clearance. Because he has a cheque discounting facility, if he brings N1billion cheque, they will give him N800million,” Abdullahi said.

He said Wema Bank, for instance, discovered that it allegedly lost N23billion to the activities of Fernandez and his companies.

On how the fraud was perpetrated, he said a high ranking staff of Wema Bank aided the fraudulent transactions.

The Wema Bank insider, the witness said, “was suppressing the cheque”, such that when other banks asked whether there is money in Fernandez’s account, the official would answer in the affirmative. “All the banks will ask Wema Bank staff, is there N5billion in his account, and he will say yes,” said the witness.

Abdullahi said the accused person claimed to be involved in oil and gas business which he said was “cash-intensive” and therefore needed to move money from one bank to the other.

He said the bubble burst when the banks, at the clearing house, discovered that “they were clearing the same cheque”.

Under cross examination by defence counsel, James Ocholi (SAN), Abdullahi said he did not know the banks’ account officers or branch managers who dealt with Fernandez.

He said the defendant’s companies were duly incorporated, and that his accounts were opened through “traditional” means.

He added Fernandez was considered high net-worth individual and so the banks took him for his words.

“If they had not taken him for his words, we won’t be talking about missing billions. The accused person stated that a point, he became the darling of the banks,” the witness said.

He said the investigation was triggered by a Suspicious Transaction Alert received from Afribank.

“They reduced the complaint to intelligence and forwarded to EFCC operatives for investigation. I don’t know if there was a petition,” Abdullahi said.

Justice John Tsoho adjourned till June 16 for continuation of trial

This story is very pathetic, goes to show that most of our banks are just money-hoarding-house with poor banking practices..

how can you pay a check of N800M when the account holder does not have up to such amount in his/her account... also such fraud to occur there must insiders to facilitate the fraud...

These are same a young entrepreneur will go for soft-loan of N1m ,they will ask for N10m collateral..

Trust Nigeria the case may likely sneak under the carpet...

Adesiji77:
MTN Nigeria on Monday warned that should there be attacks on its facilities, it might be forced to close shop and 99 per cent of its over 6,000 workforce in the country, who are Nigerians, would be thrown into the labour market.

It also said that calls for the boycott of its services were unjustified as such an action would affect its support chain, which could cause another 500,000 Nigerians to lose their means of livelihood.

The company stated this in Lagos some hours after two groups protested in its Abuja and Benin offices against the killing of foreigners in its home country, South Africa.

According to the Corporate Service Executive, MTN Nigeria, Mr. Wale Goodluck, there are only 12 expatriates working for the company in the country, compared to a workforce of 6,000 Nigerians.

Goodluck said, “So, if people go ahead with their threats to attack our facilities, what that means is that we may be forced to close down the business in Nigeria and about 6,000 Nigerians that make up 99 per cent of our workforce will be unemployed.

“Then, when you look at our support chain, we have about 500,000 Nigerians gainfully employed. So, boycotting our services simply means destroying so many other Nigerian businesses and making over 500,000 other Nigerians to lose their jobs.

“This business supports a lot of businesses across the length and breadth of Nigeria. Many of the businesses that are affiliated to South Africa are in the retail space, supporting the growth of Nigeria and employing so many Nigerians.”

He noted that the company had spent in excess of $15bn on capital expenditure growing the telecommunications business in Nigeria.

“We see no revenge of Xenophobia and we commend the role the Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa has played; at least there has been no fatality on the part of any Nigerian,” Goodluck added.

when the time for arrogance is due , no one will tell us. imagine a whole country giving excuse it could not fight boko haram because USA will not sell arms. If you are not aware, to a large extent, Nigeria is now finding it hard to sell its oil as such giving discounts to entice buyers.
bros no be fight.. u dont have to insult me to be a PRO-USA.....

USA is the police of the world countries. the national identity that could not manufacture weapons to fight book haram, or is it the national identity that left our crude oil sales in limbo when usa stopped buying our crude oil. do not overreach yourself.

Has any1 ever seen or read where d US repatriated their citizen?
Even when U catch a US citizen red handed and jail him,d US will always claim his trial was not fair.
They even try everything possible to bring back their citizens already convicted and jailed outside d US to come home and serve their jail terms yet Nigerians are gleefully advocating for their own citizen to be repatriated.
It's sickening how majority of Nigerians reason.
another sensible post.. its ridiculous how some Nigerians will play sentimental polity to the extent of losing Their NATIONAL IDENTITY...

See how the uninformed Nigerians trolling in their droves, I didn't know if I am doing the right thing at the moment, attempting to engage some kids in matters which appears beyond their comprehension.

I do not know the man kashamu or anything about him, but a senator-elect, the US is requesting his extradition, have you asked yourself, would the US ever extradite their own senator-elect to face criminal trial in another sovereign state? Shame most of you have lost any sense of patriotism and identity.
