SportsRe: Nigerians Representing Other Countries In The Olympics!! by antitpiah:
Jiah011: I agree 100%!!! I made a similar post somewhere. If one's parents emigrated from their country and their children are born in a new country, those children born in that new country are citizens and people of that new country by nationality. Their heritage is elsewhere, but where they are born and raised is their home.
Not quite true. Home is where your heart is, not necessarily where you are born. If you live in a place and pay your taxes you are a citizen. Your nationality is still defined by your ethnic group/heritage/affiliation. Ohuruogu, for instance is a Nigerian name. To claim otherwise for the sole purpose of making yourself feel better about who you really are is dishonesty. I do agree that people should be free to decide what country they want to represent. What Island. People should be free to act in their own interest, monetary or otherwise. That said, the fact still remains that you cant simply wake up and change who you are all of a sudden. No one exist in a vacuum. We all started from somewhere. And that place is HOME. Ohuruogu's home is not the UK. Her home is whereevre her parents call home. She is part of something bigger than her and she, like the rest of her cohort, cant just cut herself off from her origin or ethnicity.

Nigeria had nothing to do directly in forming those athletes, so why do they feel obligated to claim them?
No one is claiming anything. We are just stating facts as we know them. Well, if Nigeria had nothing to do with forming them, then I guess they should return the discipline they got from their NIGERIAN parents. They should wipe off the millions of years of information imprinted on the NIGERIAN DNA they were freely bequeathed by their NIGERIAN parents; dont forget that they are only able to achieve this much in part because of the DNA shoulders of the ancestors they are standing on.

With all the corruption, tribalism, bribery, materialism, lack of institutions, etc, how can great athletes, or even other people striving for greatness with real raw talent survive in Nigeria? Not that people are not successful in Nigeria, but it's hard to do it based on sole merit and hard work. If you have money and connections, it's a lot easier. It's always North vs South, East vs West, Politics, titles-- "Who you be" or "Do you know who I am?" Enemies of Progress. A nation that eats their young by refusing to invest in them to foster a brighter tomorrow. It takes a lot of dedication and investing in talent to refine it to greatness. At least these other countries have provided means to create world-class, Olympic athletes for it people, including those of Nigerian decent. You can't say that it's an issue of just being a developing Nation, because others nations in this category are being successful. Nigeria loves to boast about itself, but what is there really for us to boast about? A lot of talk, but nothing to show for it.
There is corruption everywhere. If Americans ran to Russia because there is corruption in America, we wont have America as it is now. There is no miracle elsewhere, we all need to pitch in if we ever going to see a Nigeria of our dreams. It is easy to blame others. Change we come only when we start taking responsibilities for our actions, inaction and baseless criticisms

Let these athletes be. They are not obligated to represent Nigeria simply because of their surname. They are representing their respective homes. People of all countries travel and make new homes for themselves. Why should Nigeria be any different? It's hard enough representing a country like Nigeria that has such a negative reputation internationally. At least these young people are showing that not all Nigerians are bad, even if they are not directly competing under Nigeria's flag.
Some people have already suggested that the athletes competing for other countries are selling their souls. I agree to some extent, an Italian in NY is an Italian in Milan: It is true that home is what you decide to call home, but nationality is who you are, your ethnic group and the DNA haplotypes you possess. In the couple of years since we started (1952) competing at the Olympics, we've had some amazing experiences as a nation: heart-pounding encounters like Nojim Maiyegun's bronze medal at the 1964 games; incredible, world class individual performance by Chioma Ajunwa at the 1996 games; Exhilarating, out of this world soccer roller-coaster, from the Dream team, that we hoped would never end. We are currently in some ruts that is going to take our collective effort and imagination to get out of, a lot of hard work and patriotism is going to be needed in the years ahead if we ever going to live up to our potential. Still, as the saying goes, representing your father land is like pizza — even when it's bad as it is right now, it's pretty damn good. I am Nigerian first, and I plan to continue being Nigerian.

blancason: Wonder why there is so much misconception here on nairaland. Marwa was a f/cking dictator while tinubu was democratic. someone mentioned earlier that he tried to ban them but they went to court...i think he just tried to manage them after that. moreover, if you are not biased and know how state decisions ar made in Lagos, you will know that this particular decision has Tinubu's hands in it....just like the lekki toll. most people are just blinded with hatred for Tinubu that they cant see beyond their nose. Tinubu is actually behind the transformation of Lagos...Fashola is a vessel..this is the fact!
I think its the other way round. Life was good with Marwa, it was hellish under Tinubu. Give me Marwa any day any time. God bless Marwa. I hope your Tinubu rots in hell, along with his family and well wishers!

AjanleKoko: You missed like 75% of my post.
I think you're not in naija, that's why you're talking like this. A first class math graduate, believe you me, does not have any need to leave Nigeria, if it is job they are looking for. Trust me on this. Most of such people usually grab one scholarship or the other and jet out sharply.

How many people do you think even graduate with a 2:2 in mathematics, from any Nigerian university? Look, i have a first class graduate of math in my team. he has been promoted twice and his salary increased three times in the last four years, all in a bid to stop him from moving to competition.

I think you're not in Naija, and as such know very little about the job market. So i will educate you a little. Please don't read this as arrogance or whatever, maybe you will see why i am annoyed these days with all these iro nla posts.

- 90% of Nigerian students graduate with 2:2 or below, and less than 2% graduate with a first class in any discipline.
- These multinationals in Nigeria actively recruit top students, because they experience a lot of turnover. PwC, Accenture, E&Y, Deloitte, KPMG. Nowadays we have the likes of Mckinsey and Booz joining the Naija fray, looking for top talent.
- In the last one year, these companies have ramped up their operations in Nigeria: Dell, Microsoft, Oracle, GE, SAP. Some new players have come in: Google, Facebook (yes, they are in Naija), RIM, and now Apple. I shyt you not, these people are actively looking for Nigerian talent.
- Even Rocket Internet Gmbh is now in Nigeria with three or more ecommerce sites (Sabunta.com, kasuwa.com), even Jason Njoku's Iroko Partners are looking for people. I'm telling you, looking for people.

Trust me on this, someone with an excellent grade in Nigeria doesn't have any problem. Even if they don't know where to look, I am happy to point them there. Don't let anybody lie to you. Don't judge by the nonsense posts you see on here. Most of them are taking the piss.
I am enjoying your posts nowadays. Keep it up boss. You tha best!

PoliticsRe: NURTW Ban: Fashola Is Joking by antitpiah: 12:18pm On Aug 05, 2012
naptu2: This has been done before (Tinubu Administration) and I think we would learn a lot by examining what happened then.

The Tinubu Administration barred the NURTW from all bus stops, motor parks and garages in the state. The administration created rehabilitation centres and skills acquisition centres to take care of the agberos and area boys that would be affected by the order.

1) The NURTW went to court. The judge ruled in favour of the NURTW, stating that the government's action violated the rights of members of the NURTW as enshrined in section 41 of the constitution (Fundamental Rights: Freedom of Movement). The judge said that motor parks, bus stops and garages were public places and therefore the NURTW had a right to be at these places.

I was very critical of the government at this time. They should have banned the "activities" of NURTW at the park, rather than simply barring them from the parks. The levies imposed by the NURTW are illegal taxes. Only the federal, state and local governments are empowered to collect taxes. If the union forces people to pay levies, whether the people are members or not, then the union is engaged in extortion, which is illegal and it is collecting illegal taxes. Drivers have a right to choose not to belong to the NURTW (section 40 of the constitution). Note that the Fashola administration has banned their activities.

2) Homeless people, area boys, lunatics, beggars and agberos were sent to the rehabilitation centres. Tests were conducted on them. Lunatics were sent to the mental hospital, drug addicts were detoxified, beggars and homeless people were given a choice between learning a skill, going to jail, or repatriation to their states of origin. Inmates of the centres were taught tailoring, baking and other skills. Upon graduation they were given a loan to start a business.

However, some inmates at the Ita-Oko Island rehabilitation centre protested some punishment meted out to them and burned down the centre. https://www.nairaland.com/400138/area-boys-lagos-ibadan-action
The levies are not taxes, they are union dues. There is a difference. NURTW like every other union in the state/federation is allowed to collect union dues from their members, no? It is a sort of membership fee, totally different from tax. The membership dues are used to fund the various activities which the union engages in. There are other unions in Nigeria doing exactly what NURTW does. If Fashola wants to ban the NURTW, fine, but, then he has to extend the same arbitrariness to other unions like NUJ, NUT, NLC, NUPENG etc. Lets just ban all unions all together, so the govt can phuck us all in the a/s/s/.
PoliticsRe: GEJ's Racist Comment In Trinidad And Tobago by antitpiah: 11:37am On Aug 05, 2012
Gbawe: Of course. Don't expect some to agree though. It is topics like this that mark out Nigeria as an arena ravaged by stupid divisions to the extent folks propagate foolish argument to defend what must not be defended. What is the "black domination" GEJ is seeking when that idea now comes 60 years too late vis-a-vis what the world is today? Is this not another revelation that we have a clueless character leading us astray?

This is why many African Nations wallow in the doldrums. They are led by undeserving cretins who don't have the progressive minds to follow an agenda of development that can, merit for merit, challenge others !!!! We conspire to frustrate our meritocratic bests like the Nkrumahs, Awolowos, Sankaras and Lumumba only to replace them with empty barrels like OBJ, GEJ et al and we then have the effrontery to play victim every single time as if we are children always deceived and wrong-footed by smarter adults.

Is a black man not already President of the most powerful Nation on Earth? How has the position of said black man benefited "black domination" or "black Nations"? How many more examples do we need before we stop chasing redundant ideals and start focusing on tangible target, i.e optimal National development, that will put us where we need to go?

My brother this is why some black folks , fed simplistic and feudalistic message useless in the real world context, go through life as losers who blame persecution and racism for everything. They will never confront the fact they are working with obsolete and useless ideas not consonant with what the world is today. We are plaqued with the same malaise in Nigeria with many preferring to redundantly view everything through ethnic superiority/angst/paranoia instead of seeing the big picture of National greatness.

Ethnic groups , as a subset within the same race, cannot even embrace and support themselves in the home Nation of this clueless President yet, as the leader of the biggest black nation on Earth, he can hypocritically talk of "black dominance"?

Who, for example, would find it easy to disrespect Nigerians if the average Nigerian is as well-educated and as developed as his peers worldwide? Who will dare look down on us if we go to the Olympics and clear many medals in a display that says "the biggest black Nation on earth represented proportionally"?

Instead we let those who have failed at National level go on to the World stage to propagate silly and offensive messages that only stoke the fires of redundant ideology that cannot help any 'black man' today. Who mocked Nigeria's Olympic basketball loss against the USA the most hatefully and malevolently if not his fellow "black men" i.e Ghanaians, Liberians, South Africans et al?

USA, the so-called white Nation , according to simplistic folks like GEJ and many posters here, is exalted by "black Nations" (Ghana, Liberia et al) for 'demolishing' a "black Nation" i.e Nigeria. Are those not the sort of things that prove there is no need to seek "black domination" since "black Nations" themselves have moved on from seeing things through race alone?

The dreamers can continue fooling themselves but realistic black folks understand what the world is today and we are not fooled by empty leaders touting empty rhetoric totally worthless today and seeking to obfuscate the part they play in leaving their fellow "black man" like a child in comparison to his peers worldwide.

An example is Somalia born Mo Farah who won 10000 metres gold for Great Britain last night. The unambitious fools and losers can celebrate "black win" if they want but the history books will show a Great Britain win and Mo Farah himself will accept a knighthood in future, to become Sir Mo, if he continues like this. To the man central to all this, i.e Mo, it is not an issue of race

Same for Jessica Ennis. She is the topic of discussion now after Hepathlon gold. I have just heard the commentator call her the pride of Great Britain and the "Queen of London 2012". Who is accentuation her "black domination"?

We, Africans, will always lose out by continuing to put the cart before the Horse. Develop our Nations optimally and so called "black greatness" will happen as a natural consequence. It is redundant and insulting to insinuate we must chase such as a primary target when we have not 'repaired' our decimated "black Nations". We may even reverse 'brain drain' satisfactorily if we commit to doing what is right. Liberians, South Africans, Ghanaians, Britons and Americans may even take up Nigerian citizen because we are a Nation others aspire to represent. That is how it is done and that is what we must aspire to first and foremost - i.e becoming a great Nation. Not empty and hollow ideals that are totally worthless today.

It is almost acceptable for a clueless GEJ not to realise that but must so many follow him in cluelessness if we really can hold our own in progressive thinking pertinent to the development of man, in his home environment, today?
lots of words, too little sense. Americans talk of American exceptionalism all the time. Its no different from what GEJ was hinting at. Get a life, old man!

Am I right? I guess the next thing is for you to show face and stop hiding behind the anonymity of the WWW so we can arrange for GEJ to come visit you wherever you may be in Obodo jand, the land of messiahs where black rich fat cats reside waiting for their black leaders to come beg them before they emancipate their fellow back citizens. People of Europian, or Asian origin aren't going to lose a minute's sleep over the desire of a blundering African President for black domination. The truth is Nigeria and its President are not respected abroad, so unless what this man said would affect the price of crude, it's of little relevance to Americans and Europeans. Sad, but true.
Africans ( Black and ugly) and their colonial mentality . . . always looking for relevance with Caucasians ( white and beautiful ) aka The Americans and The Europeans

However, what Jonathan's comment shows, once again, is the man's lack of sophistication and self - restraint . We saw that with his infamous 'I don't care' comment in the much-publicised TV interview. As the leader of a country, and if you want to be respected as having an ounce of intelligence, you cannot make carefre e statements, especially when abroad, about wanting your race to dominate.
A single gaffe = No sophistication? For godssake, the man is the president of the biggest country in Africa, with over 250 tribes. He is saddled with one of the most complicated (read primitive) political systems in Africa. A man working hard at improving the economic lives of over 150 million people, many of whom are educated, yet lack basic critical skills to analyse issues intelligently, let alone create jobs for themselves. Here is a man presiding over a country with over 30 percent unemployment, higher among the youth and recent, expo-dependent, university graduates. He is distracted left, right and center by discontent militia groups sponsored by rich citizens with the most to gain from a chaotic polity. I agree that what he said didnt portray him very well, especially on the international stage with mostly Caucasian audience (God Bless caucasians . . . my African brothers will go to any length to not incur their contempt, even if they have to make a mountain from a molehill). But before we begin to criticize this man for his gaffes, we need to ask ourselves, where are his speech writers. Where are the people getting paid top dollars to prepare his speech? He has a lot on his plate already, censoring himself every time he is about to speak or read a prepared speech shouldnt be one of the things he ought to worry about.

Also, if the President is so keen on race domination, tribe domination(Ijaw) must also be dear to his heart - any wonder some Nigerians already complain about a strong tribal bias in his administration.
You are free to draw whatever conclusion you wish to draw from a simple badly worded sentence. There is nothing in the speech that points to his desire at race domination. He was simply advocating for emancipation. Freedom from colonial mentality, which you seem to be suffering from. It was the right speech meant for people like you and the many dunderheads on this thread. His only mistake IMO is that the speech was delivered to the wrong audience.

If he wants Nigeria to become a leading nation in the world, and for him to be respected, he should talk less and use the opportunity he has as its leader to:

- genuinely fight corruption
There is no evidence that he is not already doing that. In fact, recent success by the EFCC points to the opposite. The problem with EFCC and ICPC isnt GEJ per se, the problem mostly has to do with capacity. Situations when we have SANs, whole SANS, not knowing how to file ordinary motions call for collective reflection.

- shun gangster electioneering politics, and
- bring about genuine economic reform to liberate the masses from the chains of poverty.
Ask not what your govt can do for you ask what you can do for your govt? If Mark Zuckerberg and the rest waited for Obama to do something about the economy before creating his multi-billion dollar empire, a lot of people, including Zuckerberg himself, might still be living in their parents basement today at 29, like most Nigerians do. It is time you learn to pull yourself up by the bootstrap and look for ways to emancipate yourself. The years of waiting for the govt to wake you up, dress you, feed you, clean up after you, beg you to apply for jobs etc is over.
