Nigerians are very gullible and easily deceived.I do not think that the Linda own any of such mansion nor make 40 million naira each month from adsense. Her blog likely generates just a little to keep her comfortable, not all of these illusions of grandeur. It's all just propaganda and image laundering. primitive people with third world mentality always bragging and showing off. I dare you to prove me wrong .

Culture / Re: Why Do We Love Foreigners? by Antoinne: 5:14am On Oct 13, 2015
Curiouscity:
As a child, I tried to understand why some things in my local dialect were ascribed to the white man. These things were the nice ones, like tarred road, avocado, coconut. They had the white man's name (oyigbo, beke, mbakara etc) attached to them. In my teenage years, I asked to know the origin of these names. But all I seemed to get then was, 'because they are nice, sweet or delicious' and white people stand for good things.

Presently, we can all attest the number of us, our family and friends, who would NOT buy anything made or produced in Nigeria except it does not have any foreign equivalent. We rather want to patronise imported second hand clothes/shoes rather than buy made in Nigeria versions. Yet the white people crave for the things we take for granted. I will give few examples.

LOCAL RICE versus UNPOLISHED/WILD/BROWN RICE: While we call ours 'local' and want nothing to do with it, the white people wish it was less expensive to buy unpolished/brown rice in their country. That rice is the most expensive rice in most Western countries I have visited . People who eat unpolished/brown rice are the rich and people who care about their health. Can someone tell me what is the difference between the 'ofada' and Abakiliki rice produce in Nigeria and the unpolished/brown rice produced in Taiwan for most Western countries?

TAILOR MADE DRESS versus IMPORTED LABELLED DRESS: The second hand clothing business is one of the most competitive business in Nigeria. Everyone wants to wear foreign label even if it is second hand. Most people believe the higher the number of foreign labels you have the classier you are. People who have mostly tailor made dresses are regarded 'locale' or cheap. Also, tailors are offered cheap pay for their skills. On the contrary, tailored made dresses are revered in Western cities and towns. In 2013, I ordered 4 shirts from my friend based in Nigeria. They were all made by a tailor I know very well. Since then, I have ordered about 8 shirts for my white friends, who believe I am a prince for being able to afford 'tailor made shirts'. The funny part is that some Nigerian friends based here do not believe my shirts are 'IK made' (IK is the short name for the town where the shirts were made). Two months ago, my pastor's wife(based in Naija) saw my pix wearing one of the shirts, she called my wife to help her import the shirts to Nigeria. She was very disappointed when she was told, that they were made in Nigeria. Tailor made is very expensive in 'obodo oyigbo'.

NIGERIAN FOOD versus FOREIGN/PACKAGED FOOD: While I understand the desire to taste foreign food or buy packaged or pre-made meals due to time constrain, some Nigerians see it as a thing of class to order pizza, buggers and other foreign foods at the slightest chance. I don't know if in all my stay or trips to Western countries I only meet wrong white people. Because, once they get introduced to our spicy foods, they keep coming back. I can't count the number of white folks who have ask for recipes for some Nigeria delicacies. Last month, a white lady brought jollof rice and moi-moi to a church potluck. She learned it through her Naija friend and youtube. She promoted and bragged about the food as if she is a Nigerian. Why can't we be proud of what we have?

All these show we don't like or value what we have. We would do anything to get a white man's thing. Why are we obsessed with the white man and anything associated with him?

N/B: Mods, please move it to the appropriate section if this post is on the wrong one.

Do you see that the examples you give suggest strongly that it's only a natural thing when foreigners value more the things that are elusive to them? Americans wanting Nigerian food is no different from Nigerians wanting American food. Oftentimes people get tired of their own plentiful resources that have become stale and mundane to them, they then turn to foreign goods because these are scarce and scarce resources have a strong appeal. Scarce resources are also more expensive, hence the price they have to pay.

Travel / Re: Anyone Tired Or Bored Of Living In A Western Country, by Antoinne: 7:35am On Oct 12, 2015
Miami11:
I came to the states to study, years later I extended my stay

Got married have young kids, but the urge to go back to Africa is daunting( I don't come from Nigeria but one of the African countries)

I went home for vacation and couldn't help the feel that I had lost a part of my life my dreams and my desires, lost relatives, missed part of my siblings growing up, missed the weather and such.
I have a feeling that

Staying back in Africa and impacting lives is worthwhile than enjoying the convenience of amenities down here.( I'm finishing a second degree and am ready to go) hubby is not on board with such, but he is willing to let me go try the experience.

To me over ten years in this country is overdue, I don't really enjoy all the drive through and other amenities in the west.

On all my visits to my country I have not had problems staying in a remote village trekking places and such. I like the exposure, experience and education I have had overseas, but I think making overseas my permanent home is futile.

Anyone ever felt such a strong desire to go back home?

I completely agree with you. I lived in the west a while, and every fibre of my being continued to push me to come back home. Truth is, if you are level-headed, want change for your country, are creative and motivated, you will be continuously blinded to the luxuries in the west by the many, many creations you can implement in your own country. In the end, you'll be ultimately pushed to leave these luxuries behind and see what you can achieve for your country.

Of course, this won't happen to those who are yet deprived of the western niceties. It'd happen mostly to those who have had their fill of it.

I am limping between decisions, I need your piece of advice to buoy my wobbling senses. A well educated lady is in my radar, I like ladies that control grammar very well, in fact I am a sucker for such ladies. This my lady controls grammar so well and she is beautiful, a graduate.

Now, I also have a young lady that comes around, and I observed that they are both different in manners. She is not a graduate, she stopped at secondary school level due to finance problem.

When this not so schooled lady comes around she always notices disorganized things and would arrange them, would notice dirty floor and mop up,wash dirty dishes etc. She would not greet me without bending her left knee slightly to show respect. She is not as beautiful as the educated lady though.

The graduate lady do none of these things, all we do is just gist.

Lately the school cert lady makes me feel the warmth of a caring lady, I am beginning to notice her more.

I am a graduate with tastes, I don't know what I want again, I am confused, somebody advise.

I'm not gonna bother answering your question, cos I have no experience in that department. However, I couldn't help but notice your writing above your request. You write well. With the many woeful grammatical spins one sees on here, this comes as a relief.

Can't they help those guys who are still alive? And they stand there looking and taking pictures!

Nevertheless, what they were doing was so unsafe. Why in the hell would they be doing stuff like that, transferring gas so that it can expand and explode. My guess is, they were transferring at low pressure, so that the volume expanded and the thing exploded on them. Dimwits.

My brother I am just not happy with this development. My Bae spied into my account and she notified me. She said she was embarrassed. I had to look at my nl profile. It was really appalling. I have mailed the mods. We live in a secular society. Is that how Muslims swear oath to Jesus before commenting on Christian thread.

And when you say it's a muslim thing all hell break loose.

I simply can't wrap my head around the need for NL to have anyone declare allegiancs to Allah before commenting on threads that should naturally receive comments from a wider public. Perhaps if the topics were related to worship or theology, that'd make sense. But we are talking topics here related to "crane accidents" or "compensation for victims of accidents" for Goodness's sake! What's the need to have posters swear an oath before commenting? What happened to being secular or not cooking religion with personal opinions?
Whoever gave this advice to the owner or owners of this forum needs to readvise them to rescind it.
Romance / Re: How Can I Know About His Sexual Status by Antoinne: 10:12pm On Sep 17, 2015
nlfan:
Dear NLers

I am in a no sex relationship with this amazing young man, he is cool and has everything I wanted in a man.

Apart from him, have always been in a no sex relationship, the last man I dated, who died in the ill fated Dana Air crash was also in a no sex relationship with me but he was more vibrant emotionally, like he will hug me tight, hold me and look into my eyes, roll his hands over me and kisses me too and sometimes I notice he will be so turn on, just that we have decided we want to wait and sometimes he will say baby i'm so turn on but I can handle it.

Now the issue I have with this one I am dating now is, he will not do any of that, all he does is look at me passionately, and if he must touch me, he will just hold my hands and play with my fingers, he can stare at me the whole day and gist with me, but I have never seen him at the point where he was turn on, whether in his face or actions, he is just there.

I know he is God fearing and can afford not to be turn on, but I am so scared, have slept in his house before, we were just like blood siblings, cook together eat and off he went to his room, no emotions or maybe a kiss to say good night and stuff, it was so neutral I feared he might not like sex or romance at all or maybe he is not all right.

Sometimes I want to bring up gist like, how far did you go with your ex, what is the most naughty thing you have done in a relationship or for love, and he will go like... I came back from work, I didn't have a car then, so I trek all the way to her house to cook for her.

And I ask, what's your most memorable sex experience, and he replied baby good night, this is not you so don't bring up the fake self, you've been talking too much to your girl friends lately I guess.

How do I get to know all these about him, have starved myself enough of sex to please God, and to be a good girl my mother asked me to be and cannot "CANNOT" and will not be able to stand a slow or bad sex experiences in marriage, the thought of this is driving me crazy

Please I'm writing a book on the Dana Air crash and want to talk to some of those affected. Can i please talk to you? You can send me a pm or reply my pm. Thanks.

I'm yet to see or hear about Nigerians take unilateral action against these companies. As powerful as these companies are, Nigerians don't realize that they can use boycotts to paralyze their sales. How nice this will be? Nigerians can insist that these companies change their terms of service, while halting patronage until they do so. It's just sad how this mass of people are unable to speak with one voice while a foreign company maltreats innocent citizens.

I knew that they will play to the gallery by announcing their "offence" through the media.
Isn't this an evidence of Buhari's negative vindictiveness and dictatorial tendencies?

Are they trying to tell us now that every other DSS operative got in through due process?

What kind of self aggrandized witch-hunting is this tori Olorun?

These people are not wise at all.
They are an inhumane lot and I stamp my foot against this very act!

Excuse me, how about monitoring them? How about placing a surveillance detail on them, to ascertain whether or not they are truly moles?
What kind of mago mago politics do they play there?

Is this the change?

Bye Bye "Non-Partisan" committed-to-national-security DSS; Welcome Pro-APC committed-to-Buhari's nepotism-and-vengefulness DSS.

This change is a scam.

This makes no sense! Place secret agent moles on secret agents?? I don't agree with you.
In order to create a professional image for the Nigerian SSS, aren't these people gonna start from somewhere? High time Nigerians realize their country won't change until they start making serious efforts at changing it.
