Nnamdi Kanu: Where is the DNA evidence?

2 December 2018

Kan-u believe him?

Last week Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), promised to “unmask with DNA evidence” the “impostor Jubril from Sudan” who has allegedly been used by the “Fulani cabal” to replace President Muhammadu Buhari. Buhari, as the Kanu tall tales go, died in January last year and rather than let the vice president take over as the law says, the cabal brought in a body double from Sudan.

In his broadcast on the internet-based Radio Biafra last week, Kanu, who recently turned up in Israel after missing, following a military raid of his compound in September last year, claimed that it was clear that the person posing as Nigeria’s president is not Buhari. Very little of Kanu’s claims stacked up. But he said he had DNA evidence and was going to present it in yesterday’s broadcast.

However, there wasn’t even a mention of DNA, just a recycling of the same old questionable claims, empty boasts and the occasional truth about Nigeria. In the absence of DNA evidence, Kanu resorted to repetition. He claimed that Buhari was taller than Senate President Bukola Saraki in 2015 and “Jubril” is now shorter. This is just not true.

From then on, listeners were subjected to bombast and a lot of stuff that just didn’t add up. He said “IPOB members are the most enlightened and educated people in Africa”. That claim was fatally undermined by some of the comments from their leader. He said God didn’t create Nigeria, as if that was a major revelation. But there is no country on earth created by God.

He then mocked Buhari for going to a climate change summit in Poland. He said Nigeria was the biggest contributor to carbon emissions because “everyone had a generator” due to non-existent electricity supply from the public grid. The biggest polluters in terms of carbon emissions are industrialised countries, with China as the biggest offender, followed by the US, and Nigeria close to the bottom of the list because it doesn’t have the heavy industries that pump tons of carbon into the atmosphere.

Then it was the regular foaming in the mouth about the “Yoruba media” and gems such as: “Nobody steals more public funds than Fulani people. To Yoruba Muslims, the Fulani are their gods”. Then chest-beating such as: “If you challenge me, I will shred you to pieces” and “I am not your typical black African man. I don’t reason like them”. It was pretty clear economics was not his forte when he claimed that: “Babangida had a very spectacular plan for the Nigerian economy.” Ibrahim Babangida was the military dictator who brought in the IMF’s “structural adjustment programme” (SAP) that hastened Nigeria’s descent into basket case conditions. Babangida didn’t really know the first thing about economics, but he surrounded himself with “Washington Consensus” disciples and the failure of their policies was indeed “spectacular”.

It was instructive listening to Kanu praise Babangida. The IPOB leader has a lot more in common with the failed rulers of Nigeria than he would care to admit. Even more so after this broadcast, which must be testing the patience of even his most fanatical followers. He told them last week that he will “unmask Jubril with DNA evidence” during his next broadcast, but “DNA” in this case stood for “Did Not Appear”. Like many Nigerian politicians, Kanu promised so much and delivered so little.

Deutsche Bank offices raided in connection with Panama Papers

Police search Frankfurt offices as part of investigation into alleged money laundering

Thu 29 Nov 2018 11.41 GMT

Police in Germany have raided the offices of Deutsche Bank in connection with the Panama Papers revelations and as part of an investigation into alleged money laundering.

About 170 police officers, prosecutors and tax inspectors searched six Deutsche Bank officers in and around Frankfurt, the public prosecutor’s office said. Investigators are looking into the activities of two Deutsche Bank employees who allegedly helped clients to set up offshore companies to launder money, it added.

The Panama Papers, published by the Guardian and a consortium of international journalists in April 2016, revealed how offshore tax havens including the British Virgin Islands were used to hide billions of dollars.

What are the Panama Papers? A guide to history's biggest data leak

The prosecutor’s office said it had seized written and electronic business documents. Police cars were parked outside the headquarters of the bank, Germany’s biggest lender.

In a statement Deutsche Bank confirmed the raid. “The investigation has to do with the Panama Papers case. More details will be communicated as soon as these become known. We are cooperating fully with the authorities,” it said.

Records from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca were the basis of the Panama Papers investigation and included more than 10m documents. The revelations caused protests in several countries and led to the resignation of several heads of state, including in Iceland and Pakistan.

Several banks, including the Swedish lender Nordea, have already been fined by financial regulators for violating money laundering rules as a result of the Panama Papers.

The prosecutors said they were looking at whether Deutsche Bank may have assisted clients to set up “offshore companies” in tax havens so that funds transferred to accounts at Deutsche Bank could skirt anti-money-laundering safeguards.

In 2016 alone, more than 900 customers were served by a Deutsche Bank subsidiary registered on the British Virgin Islands, generating €300m, the prosecutors said.

They said Deutsche Bank employees were alleged to have breached their duties by neglecting to report money laundering suspicions about clients and offshore companies involved in tax evasion schemes.

The investigation is separate from another money laundering scandal surrounding the Danish lender Danske Bank, where Deutsche Bank is involved.

Denmark’s state prosecutor filed preliminary charges on Wednesday against Danske for alleged violations of the country’s anti-money-laundering act in relation to its Estonian branch.

Danske is under investigation for suspicious payments totalling €200bn from 2007 onwards and a source with direct knowledge of the case told Reuters that Deutsche Bank helped to process the bulk of the payments.

The historic corruption verdict against Pakistan’s former leader also included prison sentences for his daughter and son-in-law.

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined $10.6 million on corruption charges linked to 2016 Panama Papers revelations about his family’s properties overseas.

The National Accountability Bureau, Pakistan’s anti-graft court, also has convicted Sharif’s daughter Maryam to a seven-year prison term and his son-in-law Muhammad Safdar to one year imprisonment.

FG unveils ‘killer’ of Nigerian diplomat in Sudan

May 14, 2018

Habibu Almu, the Nigerian diplomat who was recently assassinated in Khartoum, Sudan, was murdered by a Sudanese of Nigerian origin, according to the ministry of foreign affairs.

Tope Elia-Fatile, spokesman of the ministry, said this in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.

He said the suspect murdered Almu at his official quarters on Thursday.

“Consequently, after several arrests and investigations by the host authorities, it was established that the deceased was stabbed to death by one Miss Inas Khalid Maikano,” the statement read.

“The suspect who is a student of Sudanese-Canadian College in Khartoum is a Sudanese of Nigerian origin.

“It was discovered during investigations, authorities discovered that the suspect had stolen some of the deceased personal belongings including cash.”

The spokesman quoted the suspect as confessing to committing the crime and is being held in police custody.

He added: “Our mission in Khartoum will continue to monitor and follow up the case to ensure that justice is done on this matter. In the meantime, the process of conveying the remains of the late Almu to Nigeria for proper burial is being finalised.”

MRrational Laughter has a lot to answer for.

NNAMDI KANU & BUHARI’S PURPORTED DEATH: THE FACTS AND FICTION

NOVEMBER 25, 2018

1. The first published post about the president’s death was on January 21, 2017 from a blogger who goes by the name, MRrational Laughter, and whose blog claims to be the ‘No. 1 Port Harcourt City Blog.’ According to the blog, “Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died in a London Hospital where he was receiving medical care, the NIGERIAN MISSION IN UK has confirmed. According to the INFORMATION RELEASED BY THE NIGERIAN EMBASSY, Buhari left the West African country for a vacation in the U.K in order to undergo medical checks. The office of the President is yet to issue an official statement on the president’s demise…” Again, on January 29, the blog republished the article under the headline “LATEST BREAKING NEWS: Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari Is Dead Confirmed By CNN-ALIVE.”

The first thing that should surprise anyone about this blog post is the fact that with all the international protocols surrounding presidents, the Nigerian president could die in a hospital in London, and it was only one lonely Port Harcourt blogger who got confirmation of the said death by the NIGERIAN MISSION IN UK and also got the INFORMATION RELEASED BY THE NIGERIAN EMBASSY about the death. None of the international media knew about this confirmation or information!

2. On January 30, 2017, the same ‘MRRational Laugher’ published a post that Queen Elizabeth sent a message of condolence to Nigerians under the headline, “Is Buhari Dead? Queen Elizabeth II sends message of condolence.” The blogger wrote: “The Queen of Britain, Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has sent message of condolence to the family of Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari and the people of Nigeria.

There are no official reports on the speculated death of the President and the message of condolence from the British Monarchy has put Nigerians in state of despair. Two sources close to the Presidency have said the President has passed on and that the photos circulating online are those from his previous visit…” The portion of the foregoing blog post underlined is to show the inconsistency between the earlier post alleging that the NIGERIAN MISSION IN UK has confirmed the news of the death of the president (which has suddenly become speculated and no longer confirmed), and the later post.

3. By January 30, a few other blog sites had picked up the news and tried to give it some traction and online presence. Some of the blogs have already been taken down and some of the accounts have been suspended. But, example of such blogs are listed below

Reptyle:
We all know the definition of orphan. I am sure Atiku does as well. He told the world in his submission that he "grew up an orphan selling firewood on the street" to survive.

On his Wikipedia page and his Autobiography, he stated his mother died in 1984, at which time he, Atiku, was heading the Customs unit at the Lagos Port, had built her a house and bought her a car.

In other areas of the book, he talked about the fact that his parents weren't super rich. But they were comfortable enough to give him a sheltered and comfortable life as a growing child.

If Atiku's mother died in 1984 like he claims and he was already a "big man" in the customs having had a sheltered and comfortable childhood, pray tell, when did things get so bad that he sold firewood on the streets

Conclusion: Atiku LIED!

His 'Oliver Twist' lies get even worse - a point I made yesterday.

I have vowed not to criticisee buhari. I just want to see how he will manage the democracy handed over to him in one piece. This will he the real test. I know he is a vain ambitious man, masquerading like a national patriots. But let him act it out by himself.

Yawns cheesy

With respect to the embolden statements in your post; I must ask if you know how many national elections Obasanjo, who pursued a third term agenda at great expense, has monitored in Africa and beyond?

Moving on swiftly...who cares if you criticise Buhari? Do you think everyone else is a binary thinker like you?

As for your retort about having a better understanding of the how the world works, all I will say is: Nairaland is a leveler. grin

Adakintroy:

Stop side tracking. Those different views if anything showed similarities. The point was that he was contemplating a mist the different alternative views and had not come to a definite cinclusion. In the end those were his advicers and nothing more. He was the general and commander in chief. The final call still rest with him and his heart. If he had made a wrong call you would have criticisms him. He made the right one so please give him his credits. You all hate to give him credit.

But I say he is the most credit worthy president since independence.

His barely disguised attempt to revise history may sit well with those who have poor comprehension skills, but it does not fly with me grin

Are you even aware that but for Adoke's refusal to disqualify Buhari from running in the first place, in defiance of Jonathan's initial request, Nigeria might have been pushed to the precipice.

The book records the last-minute intrigues and political manoeuvres that defined his last moments with top aides and ministers in the Presidential Villa and the relief he felt after he congratulated President Buhari in a telephone conversation.

Jonathan said he rebuffed the advice by the then Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Attorney-General of the Federation and Justice Minister Mohammed Bello Adoke; Aviation Minister Osita Chidoka, who was a compere at the book launch; and his Senior Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs, Warpamowei Dudafa.

He writes: “They were recommending sundry alternatives, but I was quiet in the midst of their discussions. I hugged my thought, figuring out how to do that which was best for the country. My personal interest was receding rapidly and the interest of Nigeria looming large. I excused myself and left the sitting room. I walked into my study. Even there, my mantra was a strong circle around me, supporting and comforting me. Let the country survive. Let democracy survive. My political ambition is not worth people being ‘soaked in blood.”

Jonathan said he turned down the advice by the then Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr.

But Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Mohammed Bello Adoke have a different recollection of events sir grin grin grin

Okojo-Iwela offers the following insight

Okonjo-Iweala writes that when she got to the Villa, she found a group of politicians urging Jonathan not to accept defeat and another group cajoling him to throw in the towel because it was all over.

“At the Villa, I was met outside the residence by Osita Chidoka, who collected my input for the speech and told me the president was in the residence. When I entered the Villa, the president was in one of the living rooms with the Vice President, some advisers, and a group of politicians who were arguing passionately about the conduct of the elections and irregularities of which they said they had evidence, such as videos of underage voting in certain parts of the country.

“They were urging the president not to concede the election. More politicians came in and joined them. On the opposite side of the room were the Minister of Aviation Osita Chidoka; the Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke; and the Minister of Agriculture, Akinwunmi Adesina. They were relaying a dissenting view, arguing that the president should concede”.

And this is corroborated by both Segun Adeniyi and Mohammed Bello Adoke

According to a report on Nigerian Tribune, three individuals encouraged Jonathan to congratulate Buhari, despite the irregularities that marred the election.

Their names were contained in a book, “Against the Run of Play,” written by the chairman of Editorial Board, ThisDay newspapers, Olusegun Adeniyi.

The trio of former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke; former Aviation Minister, Osita Chidoka and a former Special Assistant to the President on Domestic Affairs, Warpamo–Owei Dudafa, were, in the book, reported to have encouraged the president to make the call to Buhari, congratulating him on the electoral victory.

Bare-faced liar! grin

If his father died in 1957 when he was 11, and Mother in 1984 when he was 38; how can he describe himself as an orphan in his early years?

Oxford Dictionary
---------------------------
Orphan

A child whose parents are dead.

‘he was left an orphan as a small boy’
as modifier ‘an orphan girl’
‘orphan chimps’

Even more, why am I hearing about this fictional tale involving firewood for the first time? angry

Is it the case that we are now going to be regaled with tales of indigent living, which clearly contradict many of the hagiographies written about him before now?

When I was 15, I spent my school holiday at home, working as a clerk in Ganye Native Authority. My boss was Adamu Ciroma, the then District Officer. From my holiday job earnings, I bought a house for my mother in Ganye, the headquarters of the local government council. The thatched mud bungalow had two rooms plus a kitchen and bathroom. It cost me about nine Pounds Sterling. My mother was very happy and proud of me. I had saved her from homelessness after her older brother sold the family house in Jada without her knowledge.
