Of course, there're alternatives to capitalism. And I expect you know this already proved itself to be the case in the US in 2008. Few companies preyed on entire US housing and mortgage, majority of the populace became poor and lost their homes to predators. Capitalism indeed collapsed until the US government intervened!.

Guess what? When the US government intervened, it gave out bailouts (more money) to the predatory capitalists, while the poor victims got nothing. In fact, the poor were made poorer cause they got evictions out of their homes. This, once again, clearly shows capitalism is not compatible with an idea of a better world for everyone.

Like I said earlier, you have a skewed view of capitalism.

Greed and exploitation are NOT the driving force of Capitalism. Capitalism is driven by the primary desire to generate profit. This quest for profit is completely amoral, i.e, it is neither good nor bad in and of itself, it is when greed or selfishness overrides the quest for profit that capitalism takes on a bad dimension. I will already concede that it is by no means perfect and can/has been exploited in times past and even to this day. However, you are completely wrong when you deny that innovation and development thrive better under capitalism than in any other system.

The one question I throw to people who take your position, a question that they consistently fail to answer logically and satisfactorily is this: What economic system provides the best opportunity for generating wealth and improving the lot of society?

P.S: I very closely followed the Nokia acquisition by MS and nowhere was it reported that Stephen Elop the CEO at that time regret or cry out about selling the company to MS. Please provide links of what you say transpired.

Well, the truth is I have issues with capitalism as an economic system.

In a fair world, young businesses should've been protected by law, and such mergers should've been illegal. Because, the goal of humanity should've been how to make the world a better place, not how to acquire more wealth or competitor companies.

Example; would you prefer XYZ to buy up all emerging cement factories in Nigeria and set cement price at his chosen price or would you prefer a world where XYZ have no legal right to buy up competitors, therefore, cannot determine cement price in Nigeria?

And, be informed that acquired companies aren't always happy or even proactively wanting to sell out. Most a times bankrupcy or situation that could be saved, but a predator company would come in instead to exploit them. The latest case is Nokia who their CEO cried on live TV after it's acquisition by microsoft.

Again, this emanates from my dislike of capitalism, and of course this's not a popular opinion. The legality of capitalism doesn't make it morally right or even economically sound, in my opinion.

You have a very skewed idea of how capitalism runs. The goals of making the world a better place and generating capital are not mutually exclusive, they can be pursued concurrently and I would argue that indeed Capitalism is the only system that has the greatest capacity of improving world conditions when compared with the other types of economic systems.

Capitalism is by no means perfect but is the only system that offers society and consumers the most choices. What this means is that more innovative ideas, services, and businesses flourish under capitalism. People have more chances of improving their economic lot, generating wealth and living a better life here than in any other system. Just take a quick look at nations that have tried other economic systems and compare them with those that have for the most part remain capitalist.

In your example the society where XYZ is not allowed, because of some law, to buy up emergent cement factories even when said emergent factories are faced with critical challenges which could lead to their bankruptcy or collapse leaves that society worse off. Those companies are denied the help that would come from a buy-out from an established player (in this case XYZ) who has the resources and wherewithal to keep that business in existence in one way or another. They will without this option most likely close shop and this means loss of jobs or employment for many people, loss of revenue for the state, and fewer cement producers for the market.

Monopoly and price fixing does not always result from mergers and acquisitions in any case proper regulation by the government can check such issues.

I think your reading of the Microsoft acquisition of Nokia a few years ago is completely off. MS was anything but a sinister predator that you have made them out to be. Nokia was in dire straits and needed to get in on the game with the leading mobile players in the industry. Now it continues to be debated that going with MS was not the best choice, that they should have gone the android route but what is certain is that they needed help fast and selling the company was one way to get that help and avoid a total collapse. That MS has still not established itself in the mobile space even after the Nokia acquisition is a totally different kettle of fish. BTW bros, when did the Nokia CEO cry out on live TV ?

The owner of google, Mr. Larry Page is the simplest of them all, and he's the real genius. I consider Zuckerberg a lucky guy. Mr. Page is the person I would like shaking his hands one day and I will. I used to like Bill Gates very much too, until he became a predator buying up up-coming businesses and young competetors.

Buying up competitors is a legitimate and acceptable practice in business, one that in most cases that also allows the ideas, concepts or approaches of the competitor to continue to flourish and reach a larger consumer base by incorporating said ideas with that of the buyer.

Facebook is very much in the business of acquisitions and over the years has bought over 50 of its competitors including Instagram, Snaptu and SportStream with its acquisition of Whatsapp in 2014 being the largest. Larry Page's Google or as that part of the company is called now, Alphabet, has bought over 190 companies. This is a very common practice in the tech industry.

I'm all for Buhari coming clean and presenting his certificate so that this matter is given a rest but what is even more saddening here, is that many of those who are calling for the President to prove that he attained the minimum level of education stipulated for holding office do not themselves demonstrate that they truly earned their own certificates.

Without question, a country’s size/population can be a source of strength but it is not the be-all and end-all of a nation state’s power or prosperity, certainly not in the manner that the OP suggests.

There are smaller countries on this continent, though beset with their own challenges and problems, that still manage to offer a standard of living (for its citizens) that rivals or out rightly surpasses Nigeria’s. Case in point: Botswana has had a GDP/Capita of $16099.3 for the period 2011-2015 against Nigeria’s $5911 for the same period; it has a life expectancy of 64 years as against Nigeria’s 52. They have been able to run a stable democracy without interruptions for almost half a century, i.e since independence, and they have achieved all of this with a population of just 2 million - about a 10th of the population of Lagos. Small is not synonymous with suffering or poverty and this is where the OP gets it wrong.

Outside of the continent, nations like Singapore and Israel are major regional players with very small populations. Had to point this out again as the OP’s dismissal of the strength and prowess of these nations as just beneficiaries of Western/US largesse is completely nonsensical and baseless. Singapore like other African and Asian nations suffered under the exploitative colonialism wrought by Europe but was able to rise and become a force to be reckoned with on the basis of pure resolve, hard work and dedication - it is sickening to see someone describe away all they have achieved as a nation as some form of western favouritism.

Having said all this, personally, I am for a big and unified Nigeria because the fragmentation that many seek for today can only come at a cost that is too dear to pay.

Its is very possible that scene was not shot in Lagos, watch the movie to the end and you'll see that there was no mention of a Nigerian production crew instead what is listed in the credits roll is a Peurto Rican and Brazilian Production Unit. My bet; that scene was shot in Peurto Rico. I live in the real world where there has never been an outbreak of such Naive reasonableness. I have observed oil prices for more than 30 years and from 1984 till 2000 at least they remained consistently low except for a spike in 1991. Reasonablesss has never been a factor in the oil markets and never will be so let us come back down to earth. The US stopped buying Nigerian crude after the last administration announced diversification of Nigeria's external reserves from the US dollar in the wake of the weakening dollar.

The US did not only stop buying Nigerian crude but also went a step further in portraying the last administration as weak by refusing to provide much needed diplomatic and military support to Nigeria in her fight against Boko Haram insurgents which by the way have all the hallmarks of a US backed destabilizing militia.

The US took it up a notch by furthering campaigns of culmany against the last administration of which notably is the phantom missing NNPC $50bn or $10bn or $20bn (depending on what figure you choose to believe). There is also the BBOG scam movement which has all the hallmarks of the now dead and buried Kony 2012 CIA Psych Operation.

As of today, Buhari has been dealt the short end of the stick as the US and western banks have refused to grant Nigeria any form of economic reprieve after Buhari cancelled all bilateral deals with China.

The US and western bankers are insisting that Buhari devalue the Naira and also open our borders for cheap imports.

Buhari has stubbornly refused to do so and this has led to the first salvos being fired by his western masters.

Of late, Buhari has not been having positive reviews from western based media outlets which were instrumental in portraying Buhari as the messiah of Nigeria. Today, we see editorials and articles from western based publications condemning Buhari's economic policies.

The BBOG group has suddenly found their voice coincidentally after Buhari went off to China to open economic talks with that country.

You will recall that the BBOG campaign of calumny was loudest during the GEJ era when Nigeria hosted the World Economic Forum with China at Abuja in 2014.

We are also seeing the ICC opening up investigation into gross human rights abuse and murder of innocent civilians by this govt. The west never commented on the Shiite or Biafran massacre but all of a sudden they are now sending a delegation to Nigeria to open up investigation on these two incidences.

All these stem from Buhari (rightfully in my opinion) looking towards China.

Buhari can never count on my vote neither do i hold a favorable opinion of him as president of Nigeria but I will like to advice him to be very wary of the west.

He has entered a deal with the devil and there is no going back.

I wish him all the luck he can get in getting out of this deal with the devils of the west.
