Judging from the bolded, Enahoro was obviously speaking from a generalization perspective. Of course you would not expect him to speak specifically of his own individual efforts under such a tone.
It may interest you further to know that the same Enahoro, in the build up to independence, proposed for the future Nigeria a 45 state structure in which the tribes most compatible with one another fall into the same state in order to avoid clashes of culture within each state. But those dreaming about a false One Nigeria denounced him as nursing a divisive agenda and he had to back down therefore.
So for him as an individual he planned but the myopic majority would not let him.
Even Awolowo's famous "Geographical expression" classification declaration was, in its full text, a practical foresighted proposal for a just and equitable future Nigeria.
Herbert Macaulay too worked towards the gaining of independence between 1985 and 1990 because he understood that Nigerians were not yet civilized enough to govern themselves democratically.
Bolded obviously a typo. Macaulay died in 1946 if I am not mistaken.

Sure several ideas were floated. However, Southern leaders had enough brainpower, education, exposure, resources (Rubber, cocoa, palm oil & nascent crude oil industry) to have achieved a purposeful foundation if they had co-operated well. At the end they didn't. Enaharo remained in Western Region parliament and later even became Federal Information Commissioner/Minister.

Individual exoneration hardly matter. None of them quit politics or resigned their positions to protest their held beliefs being ignored.

Atiku is currently touting decentralisation and state police. We all know it's not going to happen. But history can later credit him with proposing it but ignored by the powers that be. That's politics.

This kind of thing is strange to the African mind.

Too much poverty has created a mindset of always wanting to acquire more for ourselves even when we don't need it. That is why politicians will steal so much money that you will wonder whether they intend to spend it in their next life. That's a very poor and primitive mindset

There is not wrong in allowing the national cake to go round so that everyone can enjoy. That is what these doctors are trying to do.
From the replies here like Nwamkpaikpe's or whatever they call him and lilyan and others, you can see why the youth in 9ja will do worse than the old cargoes looting our commonwealth currently. No sense of social justice.
That is exactly what current looters are like.

What makes the youth worse is that they have very high taste too young. The kind of luxury not available when current looters started out.

Enahoro was the first to see that Nigeria was more likely to fail than succeed hence he proposed secession clause to make it easy not only for the North but for all tribes to part ways post independence. But he was mocked and threatened with felony charges by those now seeking for secession most.
A no fit shout!
But Enahoro admitted a few years before he died that they didn't make proper any plans for the future when fighting for independence.

He said they all thought that once the British were gone, we as black people will be able to negotiate things among ourselves. How wrong they were.

Sure most of them were very young and never ran an independent country before. They were were simply too optimistic.

Of course we're talking here with hindsight. If we had lived at that time, we would have succumbed to independence euphoria too. cheesy

Congrats! Let's follow them mix up their politics.

My only worry is it seems the right wing anti-immigrant party are using this our brother to launder their racist image.

The motto being "If they have a black senator in the party, they cannot be racist".

A former municipal candidate of this Salvini's party shot and killed a black immigrant and wounded six other immigrants, in a racist attack. I think the victims were even Nigerians. The attacker is in jail now.

Lol. 30 years nor be short time ma. In fact my period of non-exposure is more than 3 times my period of exposure. Remember too that several European languages came after that childhood exposure. cheesy

Of course I didn't live in Urhobo/Isoko speaking town. It wasn't something I spoke daily. But at one point you could not say anything bad about me that I would not understand. Things just ring a bell now when I hear people speak.

Kids assimilate things fast as they build vocabulary. They also lose some fast to make way. Those not used are easily displaced/replaced.

Any language one does not understand seems fast.

Sadly I lost the little EdoidUrhobo/Isoko/Esan I knew as a kid. I was really good in Esan. Courtesy of the wives we married from those places and neighbourhood friends.

But without practice for a very long time, all gone. Pity. It reminds me of family friends that moved from the North then. The kids spoke only Hausa, some Afemai (parents were from Edo North) and very little English. Within a few years the kids lost Hausa language. cheesy

Lol. You have to listen better. I listen to languages generally. With time you get a hang of it. First is to know that there are similarities. Then also know that grammar are different. Then learn the simplest words: greetings, numbers, days of the week, etc. Curiosity.

As for Western languages I always gave myself 3 months to get the rudiments of it upon arriving in that environment: to be able to read newspapers, read letters addressed to me, etc. Such basic stuff. It is possible even if not easy.

In 9ja local languages face serious decline. I have suggested before that Edoid languages should make a joint effort. Since the languages will re-enforce others.

I make my kids listen to various Edoid languages videos/teaching on you-tube. When they see Urhobo people and say "Migwo", they are often surprised. grin cheesy

Better they understand bits of these languages than none. I tell them these languages have a common root in the distant past.

Same applies to Germanic & Romance languages for example. Knowledge of German makes English easier & Italian makes French easier to learn.

Thanks for the info.. never thought of that due to the fact that I haven't seen any Bini person bearing the name 'Okoro' , all the same Urhobo is still an Edoid language but also a Unique and distinct language on its own.
Sure, Urhobo is very rich in deed. I hear words in Urhobo language that I used to hear old Benin people use like 3 decades ago. I used to listen as a kid. People over 90 then. All gone now.

These Urhobo words are ancient Edoid words. Would have been regular words in Benin centuries back.

Those old Benin people called coconut "kokodia" instead of Ivin as it is called today. God as "Oghene-Osa" instead of Osanobua commonly used today. And many others.

So within two generations, you can see how a language changes quickly.
CultureRe: Itsekiri Names And Their Meaning by AreaFada2:

I get your point.. the general standard Yoruba dialect is currently influencing the itsekiri language, reason most itsekiri's insist on their own lexicons, they are preserving their language which is also a dialect of Yoruba.

Similar case is also the Isoko/urhobo saga.. we just got to respect each and everyone's choice.. the itsekiri/Yoruba relationship is growing stronger, so no cause for alarm.
I think this is important.

Preserving unique features of regional dialects under the umbrella of one language is crucial. It took very many centuries for Itsekiri to develop into what it has become now. So throwing all that away to embrace only "Oyo" dialect would be a big loss.

Even in Eastern Yorubaland, Ondo/Ekiti, the rich dialects are very important and very much influenced Yoruboid dialects in Delta/Edo.

I find the "gh" common in Itsekiri quite interesting. We have it too.
CultureRe: Itsekiri Names And Their Meaning by AreaFada2:
Efewestern:
it's a unique yoruboid language, influenced by Urhobo and Edo. some names up there are urhobo names, eg Okoro, Dolor etc while some are Edo names eg Edema.
Actually Okoro is an ancient Benin name too. Meaning Prince. For example the native name of a crown prince like current Oba before investiture as crown prince (Edaiken) would be Okoro Eheneden. But English more commonly used as Prince Eheneden. All princes can bear the name Okoro.

More commonly in Benin Okoro is a surname. Basically given to a male child to mean boy. No baby boys are called Okoro nowadays. So only old people bear it, meaning it is mostly surname to their children now.

As for the Itsekiri name you listed, most/very similar variations are common in my village in Edo State. The language is not much different from Itsekiri. Spoken alongside Benin Language.

I purposely write BENIN language because despite even Benin people erroneously writing "Bini", there is nothing like Bini. People feel the need to vernacularise everything African word. The Palace has repeatedly corrected this "Bini" people write over the years.

The man did great for his time. Simply because nobody has done anything close since.

But he, Zik of Africa, Enahoro and others had the chance to let the North go and create a progressive country in the South. The North were even reluctant to remain with the South.

However, even in my lifetime, religion & ethnicity were not such terrible issues as they are now. So maybe they thought things would get better as we get better educated and develop with our massive resources & potential.

Sadly they were way too optimistic. Other things that followed especially the civil war that has polarised the country till now, blame game over who allegedly betrayed whom, all resulted from that misjudgement.

RIP sir.

Just going to comments here and I must ask, using Nigeria as a case study, does university education really make people more knowledgeable than they already are?
What do you mean by knowledge?

If you just finished secondary school and go study Biology at university, sure you will get more knowledge about animals, plants, environment, etc. Compared to someone who did not study biology.

But will BSc in Biology/Economics/Physics/Agric etc give you more common sense? I doubt.

If you really like acquiring knowledge naturally, your exposure to history students, medical students, economics students might make you pick up books in those subjects and read. Or ask them questions.

If intellectually you are just " Oh King Pharaoh let my people go", you will graduate with little much in the way of extra knowledge. cheesy grin

In 9ja, the cramming and regurgitation and booklet buying university regime has done a lot of damage.

These aren't excuses, they're facts. There are no facilities, no well paid, highly paid biomedical scientists. Finding the cure for diseases require highly regulated laboratory environments which don't seem to exist in Nigeria.
The West are definitely not to be blamed but when there's a question of "Why can't Nigerian scientists develop it quietly", I have to ask how and where? In their backyards?
Look, first look at the post I replied to before you quote me. I replied initially to the person blaming whites for not developing a cure for AIDS.

Now the West are developing because their leaders did the right things. And the people vote for decent candidates. In the past when leaders/kings messed up, there were revolutions. If we the masses settle for "rankadede, your boys are loyal, up the chair" and such nonsense hailing corrupt people, we deserve what we get.

So yes they are excuses. Our leaders did not fall from the sky. They were nurtured by our society. They are people's dads/mums, uncle, aunt, sons, daughters, wives, husbands, etc.

Look, the excuses are too many. Nothing stopped FG from providing the enabling environment. Sell one aeroplane in the presidential fleet and it can set up a very good lab at the Institute of Medical Research.

The West did not stop us from doing any of these things. If black leaders lack foresight, the West is not at fault.

I totally agree. Any black who has claimed to have a cure, rather than investigating this cure they quickly silence such persons by labelling them with all sorts of negative tags and in worst case scenarios arrange the death of such persons.
Why can't black countries protect such people and ensure such discovery is kept secret? And just use it to cure own population. If a Nigerian quietly develops it and FG use it to cure all our HIV patients, is it bad? If we know what we are doing, why rely on the West for approval? shocked shocked
HealthRe: What Is Stopping The White From Getting The Cure For HIV/AIDS? by AreaFada2: 9:49am On Mar 06, 2018
Very funny question.

You need to understand the nature of HIV virus first.

The West do not play with infectious diseases. Simply because such diseases do not discriminate. A prophylactic treatment to prevent infection if someone has just recently been exposed costs over $1,000 or more. So finding a vaccine or cure is in their interest.

Who made the progress so far made in HIV research? The West largely.

This question would make more sense talking of sickle cell that doesn't really affect Caucasians. Even progress made there so far, it's the West too.

Nigeria in particularly ought to be at the forefront of infectious disease research. Because we stand to gain a lot as the largest black nation, one of those most affected. And money selling to others.

I went to see her parents & i told i would've loved to do the traditional marriage immediately but i have too many projects @ hand & these projects are gulping a lot of money as a result i can only afford to do the introduction now & do the trad. After she put to bed.

They assured me they would get back to me with a a good reply.
Few weeks later my girl called me that the pregnancy has been aborted. The most devastating thing is, she was pregnant with a set of twins.

As for my so-called girlfriend, it's over between us

Still thinking if i should arrest the mother
Sorry dude.

But legally you have no right until the kids are born and your name appear in their birth certs. For now police may just turn you into a workshop.

Although it hurts but only the girl & family know the true reason for the abortion.

The twins might not even be yours. Up to 35% of firstborn kids do not belong to supposed dad.

Look at the bright side. At least you now know that you're fertile since you presume the babies were yours.

If your gf would go behind you to do something so important, then she obviously doesn't regard you that much. Better to know that now than after marriage.

Considering your current economic situation you tried to do your best: intro & trado. They had the option to suggest intro & registry if legally protecting their daughter was their main concern.

But guess what? They probably considered your current economic condition as not good enough for their daughter.

Work hard and let God bless your efforts. You will be telling us a happier story here next time.
