What people do not know is that the mother of Dr Pedro, the cousin of Obaseki, is also Ize-Iyamu's aunt. I won't be surprised if these are Pedro's siblings endorsing their aunt's son. It may be that only by surname that they appear more related to Obaseki. Politics Na very dirty game. |

llakes4real: Am of the opinion that Ami ohun is complicating the Yoruba language. Hausa language is widely used for writing because it has a simpler writing format. I think, Yoruba language needs a simpler form of writing that would do away with the Ami ohun, so readers can easily pick the meaning of the word at sight.
Yoruba language should be easily written by it speakers, then one day science would be taught in it. I agree with bolded above. But Ami ohun can still be simplified further. However, in a region where literacy easily gained ground using Latin script, a new script will be a tall order to adopt. This would have been more useful a few hundred years ago. If it began in Oyo, Ife or some major part of Yorubaland and spread across overtime. That's why Sanskrit, Perso-Arabic and other ancient writing systems have endured in many languages that adopted them. They work seamlessly alongside new Latin or other writing system later introduced. But I still see its usefulness long term. |

llakes4real: Hmm, I didn't know that. But adopting this new alphabets would not be easy in this mordern world because we would have to create alot of things like computer keyboards for it. Serbian, Kazakh, Punjabi, Marathi and several others use it. It's called diagraphia. Syn-chronic diagraphia since used alongside each other. Konkani even has three scripts or so. True, it will complicate learning. But It should first be used by academics. Certainly anyone who wants to become a Yoruba teacher has to learn it. In ten years there will be enough teachers to roll it out in schools. But right now some people are switching to the simpler Latin script. Kazakh will move almost entirely to Latin script before this decade runs out. Korea simplified its script artificially/synthetically back in 1440s. Just imagine what it was like before simplification! But at least Korean is not even in Top 5 most difficult languages to learn anymore. Chinese Mandarin takes the biscuit easily. |

macof: Benin City is a reserve of rich traditions and high reverence for the traditional monarch (Oba of Benin), who once led a powerful Empire. One of such traditions is the habit of addressing the Oba of Benin by various appellations instead of his actual names as sign of deep respect and awe. It is no wonder, therefore, that the Oba of Benin is known by several appellations.
Such appellations are: Ovbi' Umogun Oza The Child of the Oba whose mother hailed from Oza
Ovbi' Ekpen N' Owa The son of the home leopard
Ovbi' Adimila The son of Adimila
Ikeji Orisa Second in command to the gods
Agbaghe, N'Ovbi Olokun Olokun's son, the cynosure of all mortals
Abieyuwa N'Ovbi Odua N'uhe The son of the wealthy Odua of Uhe(Ife).
Ovbi' Ada, Ovbi' Eben The child of the owner of the Ada = scimitar and Eben = royal sword, Edo symbol of sovereignty.
Ovbi'Ekenekene ma deyo The son of beauty that never fades.
Ovbi'Ekuaho N'Olo, Ovbi'Ekuabo N'Olo The son of the rocky arm, the brave and powerful
Ovbie Ikpinhianbo kpuru no Gb'oduma The son of the short fingered man that was still able to kill a lion
Nohien utete no gh'ughe s'omwan The king on a hill, who sees more than everybody
Ovbi'Oghonwan nei bun aro The son of the fearless, who looks without twinkling his eyes
Ovbi'ode, ode n'ohan ren mu' ete The son of the warrior whose enemies got frightened at the announcement of the approach
Uku Akpolokpolo The mighty that rules
Ovbi' Adolo no dolo uwa dolo utomwen/b] The son of the wise judge and peace maker who combined wisdom and wealth with long life [b] Ovbi' oven owie no gbaisi The son of the morning sun that covers everywhere
Ovbi' Akpogunla, ogie no y'igho b'owa The child of the womb of Akpogunla - the warrior who fought big wars and built a house of cowries
Oba n'osa A king that is god
Ovbi' otolo n'olomi; Ologberonmwon nei rie iruen, ebo, ayemwinre eminiminimini The son of the water controller, the son of beauty itself, the starter of things and the person whose reign saw people with many tongues
These appellation are in cognissance of the greatness of the Omo n'oba ne edo, the Oba of Benin. E |

paulolee: so touching knowing that he lost both arms while trying to escape.. dont know why is it that whenever i see this sets of animals, i do think if Charles darwin is right about his evolution dogma in his book "the origin of the species"... the question i keep asking is that if we truly evolved from apes, then why do humans stopped evolving?? pls before you attack me with the story of creation, jus have it in mind that am thinking as a rationalist and a follower of Descartes and spinoza.. Evolution is real in a way. Maybe not entirely as Darwin put it. Beginning from microbes and all that. Of course we are still evolving. Evolution is not just for the sake of it. Its a matter of function and necessity. Evolution is also a very slow and gradual process. Taking tens of thousands to millions of years years of trying to adapt to changing conditions. If Africa were to almost suddenly turn temperate due to a cosmic accident or event, those who survived the initial cold and turmoil wiill start trying to physiologically cope with the cold. Our skin might get much lighter in complexion to harness limited sunlight, become more efficient at using sunlight to make vitamin D, make us more resistant to flu viruses that will become more common, etc. My view of evolution does not really negate creation. But the religious timeline of creation as interpreted by us today is probably wide off the mark. |

Culture › Re: The Uneme People And The Curse Of Oba Egbeka Of Benin Empire by AreaFada2: 8:23am On Jul 30, 2020 |
samuk: If I read the Yorubas correctly, the Oba title was initially met for lesser kings and somehow their superior kings are now using it. It's like the Oba of Benin changing his Oba title to Ogie.
If this is not an attempt to twist logic on it's head, then I don't know what it is.
The reason everyone from baale, ewi, Ooni, Awujale, etc, who are on the same level to Old Benin empire equivalent of Eleko, Ogiame, Ogiegor are now switching or adding the Oba to their original title is to pretend to elevate themselves to the singular enviable position of the Oba of Benin.
The original and only true Oba is the Oba of Benin, others currently using the title are copycats doing so for the prestige the title has earned for close to a thousand years as the title of Oba of Benin.
Before 1940, none of these senior Obas in Yoruba land used that title, but in less than a century, they have completely appropriated the title to themselves to the extent of even now claiming ownership and origin of the title.
The Oba title is completely being desecrated in Yoruba land by every Tom, dick and harry chiefs who now referred to themselves as Oba. These people hardly know the respect such title carries in it's original birthplace of Edo.
No single chief or Enogie within the Benin kingdom dear add the Oba title to their original title the way the Yoruba baale, ewi and chiefs are doing. Their lack of respect for the title shows that they borrowed it and don't fully understand it's significant. I have written something very close to what you in the last few paragraphs in another post. You got it spot on. How supposedly high kings or emperors can suddenly revel in what used to be a lesser title is beyond me. Ogie Oba of Benin as a new title is unimaginable. Because both titles are Benin and we clearly know which has superiority. Look when you copy something, the chances of copying it wrongly are very high. Imagine me and you with yansh grey hair to copying American Texan accent. |
