Abba Gumel, Nigerian-born US-based Professor of Mathematical Biology, has been elected Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (AMS).

He is among distinguished mathematicians elected for 2023 Class of Fellows of the Society.

Gumel was recognised for his contributions to the mathematical theory of epidemics, applied dynamical systems, and promoting the use of mathematics to help solve global public health challenges.

He is among the four Africans to be elected Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.

Two other Africans – one originally from Benin Republic and another from Central African Republic – are fellows of the prestigious society.

The last from Nigeria was appointed during the inaugural year in 2013.

Gumel was a Foundation Professor of Mathematics at the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, Arizona State University, before becoming The Michael and Eugenia Brin Endowed E-Nnovate Chair in Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics, University of Maryland, College Park in 2022.

His research, which spans three main areas of applied mathematics (namely, mathematical biology, applied dynamical systems and computational mathematics), is focused on the use of mathematical modeling and rigorous approaches, together with statistical analysis, to gain insight into the dynamics of real-life phenomena arising in the natural and engineering sciences.

The main emphasis of Gumel’s work is on the mathematical theory of epidemics – specifically, he uses mathematical theories and methodologies to gain insights into the qualitative behavior of nonlinear dynamical systems arising from the mathematical modelling of phenomena in the natural and engineering sciences, with emphasis on the transmission dynamics and control of emerging and re-emerging human (and other animal) infectious diseases of public health and socio-economic interest.

In 2021, Gumel was chosen to give the AMS Einstein Public Lecture in Mathematics of the American Mathematical Society. He was named Extraordinary Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, University of Pretoria and Adjunct Professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Waterloo, Canada.

Gumel has written over 160 peer-reviewed research, numerous book chapters and edited three books.

In 2014, Professor Gumel became one of eight US-based scientists who signed a memorandum of understanding with seven Nigerian universities aimed at helping them build world-class capacity in biomedical sciences research and pedagogy.

How do you reason self? Was ASUU holding a gun and pointing it at FG during that 2009 negotiation that made FG agreed to their demands? Did ASUU forced them to sign it? Now back to this administration, they renegotiated with ASUU on some of that 2009 agreements and yet the agreed money they fixed to be giving ASUU they never come through with it. But the foolish FG has money to buy exotic cars for the Nigeriens, there’s money to gift other countries, there’s money to pay bogus salaries and allowances to our sleeping senators and incompetent ministers. What’s the educational budget of Nigeria compared to the others in our yearly budget list?

These action by FG will both be felt by the lecturers and students and it has started in Unijos already were it ASUU members has stopped taking classes until they get paid atleast 50% of their eight month salary as agreed before the strike was suspended

As I write this , I am in the gridlock at Lagos Ibadan express way, warewa pricisely.
I drove my Peugeot 307 today to work , couldn't work cos of power, I use a 3 phase machine and so I couldn't work cos 1 out of the three phase was out,and so I decided to join those that want to take one-way back to Lagos, on getting to the police check point , I was turned back and so I decided to wait, while I wait I noticed 3 young guys trying to fix their Peugeot 307 hatch back and then I walk up to them to assist them, while I was there I found out that they also took the one way but their car suddenly went off, and so that was what caused the repairs they were doing.

To my greatest surprise, I adviced them that. Since they couldn't find a rewire or mechanic tha could help them, they could push and start the car as it would start. We did tha and the car started, immediately the car started , one of the soldiers at the check point quickly ran to them and asked if they were ready to leave,? Immediately the road block the FRSC police made with their cars was removed and they drove off.

I don't believe that governors can influence voters that much this time around especially in southern and middle bellt part of Nigeria during next year's presidential election.. The four regions ( SE,SS, SW and MB) knw what is good for them..

NW and NE always vote along tribal lines irrespective of political party involved. They started their tribal politics since 2003 when Buhari began his presidential race that is why I laugh at amoda who thinks that he can become the president without having the backing of atleast 2/3 of entire southerners and 2/3 of MB zone .. These four regions have independent minds of their own.. Peter Obi is sure of SE and SS that's why even PDP candidate in Rivers state who is Wike's candidate is using Obi picture to campaign while Atiku is sure of NW and NE more reason some APC candidates are using his pictures as well..

Where is Tinubu's political base ?
Is he hoping on APC northern governors despite what PDP northern governors did to Jonathan? .. Doesn't Tinubu want to learn lesson from Jonathan's predicament ?
