Ecosol: . If u read thru d post carefully, u wuld discover dat dis is not d 1st time dat doctor is making a mistake. In 2007 a high court in d uk branded him incompetent! Dat speaks volumes 0.
as i said one does not mean all. One ' Nigerian DR' is incompetent OK, one american DR is incompetent OK, ( a Dr was held for the death of Micheal Jackson) i guess he was Nigerian too.

what exactly is the point of this thread? the title is misleading.

A Nigerian Dr bashing thread. Enjoy yourself.

nursemyke: oga philips you are most ignorant concerning the politics and practices in the health sector. kindly stop misleading the general public. nobody is stealing the ownership of the patients from the medical consultants, all JOHESU is saying is that healthcare is a teamwork with respect being mutual and reciprocal. let me educate you that the so called members of JOHESU who wants to be adressed and treated as consultants have acquired the requisite academic and clinical competence in their various field of practice. this will enhance more patient care outcome. more consultant specialist in various field more healthcare benefit to the client.
there is paradigm shift in the healthcare industry now lets all accept it.
oga philips you are most ignorant concerning the politics and practices in the health sector. kindly stop misleading the general public. nobody is stealing the ownership of the patients from the medical consultants,

ok lets just agree with this to forestall further arguments.

all JOHESU is saying is that healthcare is a teamwork with respect being mutual and reciprocal

We agree that its teamwork but the team has a head. besides we know how h/o's are harassed and insulted by johesu members so how do you shout reciprocal respect when you aren't even respectful yourself.

the so called members of JOHESU who wants to be adressed and treated as consultants have acquired the requisite academic and clinical competence in their various field of practice.

want to be addressed and treated like consultants why? are you a consultant or you just decided that you should be called one on whim.

this will enhance more patient care outcome. more consultant specialist in various field more healthcare benefit to the client.

i have always said what do you want to do as a consultant that you aren't doing now, that the title will change.
in line with your statement that johesu has attained qualification which will improve patient care why do you need the title of consultant. I still dont get it.

a consultant radiographer will do what?
a consultant nurse will do what?
a consultant mls will do what?

kindly explain what you mean by improved health care to the patient using these parameters.

thank you.

i am happy with obembe's reply.he is learning fast.the decision to call off does not lie with him and if he takes any decision to the contrary, then he should get ready for an impeachment.

It is also high time NMA ask for the sack of the health minister. he is grossly incompetent.
ASUP have suspended their 10month old strike thanks to shekarau who has spent barely a week in office.
it is not difficult to call a roundtable of FG,NMA,MDCAN,NARD and JOHESU to trash these things once and for all.
i wonder why a round table meeting hast been called all this while, the issue on ground is concerning two bodies why do they have to meet separately why not all meet at once and iron out issues once and for all.

Dr obembe smartly sidestepped the trap grin grin grin he is a representative not a dictator.

rolex29: very sound and objective write up .Doctors own the patient and nobody want to take your patient away from you we only want to reach the zenith of our respective fields it doesnt stop any doctor from performing his or her duties at all . A house officer pay is d same thing with a PMLS (atleast u must ve worked for 10 years to get to that salary level o! ) while interns get N112 ,546 in d eastern state where i reside so its really poor .Delivering quality healthcare to patients is a focal point in all medical professions and lets not forget anybody can be a patient nobody is excluded not even the doctors who own the patient so i dont how hindering the progress and welfare of other medical professionals will improve the quality of healthcare in this our nation.
Again nobody stops you from getting an Msc or Phd in your respective field. no one is against your progress or welfare.

the Ho/Pmls salary issue is based on economics (demand and supply)

adeoladrg: I don't mind if we're are not giving the title consultant. For the reason that, a postgraduate course doesn't make you a consultant in the US doesn't apply to Africa. Here, you need to go through a postgraduate college to become one. That said, whatever process it takes, the roles are the same everywhere. To hell with the title!!!
medical post graduate colleges award fellowships not consultancy status, you can take the title on appointment by the govt or setting up of your own private practice.

this does not however stop medical officers from running their own clinics as am sure it doesn't stop pharmacist from owning pharmacies with or without a fellowship.

My point is pls strike to improve your practice! Not too stop others from improving their practice! We are tired of going to India.
pls don't quote eye surgery its as common as mosquitoes in Nigeria, as for organ transplant i don't believe you understand the logistics that follow it( there is a reason that it is not common here in Nigeria) so leave it at that.

recently delsuth performed their first kidney transplant and patient/donor are still alive.
Health › Re: Nma Strike: The Patients's Perspective by armadeo(m): 5:12pm On Jul 15, 2014
GentleMimi: Lol. Yet u claim to be a patient. Come out clean, boy! cheesy
Nobody ''owns'' any patient. Stop confusing yourself with that phrase. Very funny and naive.
Who does the diagnosis,to confirm the prognosis? Medical scientists.

Who handles patient care in the wards? Nurses.

Who handles therapy in patients with bone issues? Physiotherapists

A patient comes into the hospital with complaints of malaise, nausea, weakness and pain. There are more than ten disease conditions with the same set of symptoms. Automatically,he requests for MP/widal. It comes out negative. What next? If he is a god,let him now determine the cause of the patient's ailment with his ''prognosis''. If he is a god,let him take care of the patient when admitted.
I repeat, nobody owns the patient. It is a collective effort.
stage 1 denial!!!

chucs: Mr man its not every nurse that packs faeces. There is hierarchy and carder in nursing profession which is also found in other profession. U seem to be a patient that has vast knowledge in medical field but found it difficult to acknowledge the existence of nurse consultants as seen all over the world. I find it difficult to understand why a professional will not be allowed to get to the peak of his/her career. The issue on ground is not about ownership of the patients but the a clear knowledge of what consultant stand for. According to wikipedia "a consultant is a professional who provides professional or expert advice in a particular area such as security(electronic or physical),management, accountancy, law, human resources, marketing(and public relations),finance, engineering or any of many other specialized fields"
again another term for best international practice, provide your links to this statement that these consultants operate in the hospital setting!!!!

who tells the scientist which test to run to confirm his prognosis?
who writes the drug prescription and dosage that wakes the pharmacist from coma? grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin
whose signature admits and discharges the patient?
who certifies a patient DEAD?

back to the issue again, who owns the patient??

phantom: look brother....if you want to import from the US do it well.if your consultancy entails a residency training,go ahead and do it.if it entails a masters and PhD,go ahead and do it.
the west African college of pharmacists has been in existence for years.HOW MANY OF YOUR SENIORS ARE FELLOWS?
you prefer to open pharmacies and sell drugs.
you, adeola when did you qualify as a pharmacist? have you considered a residency in pharmacy??
Health › Re: Nma Strike: The Patients's Perspective by armadeo(m): 4:48pm On Jul 15, 2014
adeoladrg: Oh cool, you must have also seen experienced pharmacist correct doctors on the use of drugs! Probably tell the doctor or a not-so-expensive drug to use for a particular condition, or device a better route of administration or an alternative therapy and lots more. We want more knowledge, we want more specialization! WE WANT TO UNDERGO RESIDENCY TRAINING FOR 6 YEARS? 7? 8? WHATEVER!

It adds to patient care! IT'S NOT ABOUT OWNING THE PATIENTS!
no it doesn't, yes i have seen pharmacist correct Drs no biggie particularly on dosage of drugs.

what do you mean by better route of administration its oral iv topical, the severity/type of the illness depends on the route of administration. Does a pharmacist need further training for that?

Alternative therapy you can all do that in your drug presentation, again any need for further studies, EVEN IF,
Mr pharmacist if you want to make changes as you claim go into research and get drugs cheaper, more effective with lower side effects for the benefit of the patient.

no one stops you from a Msc or Phd and be called Dr pharm, In an academic setting Yes, in a private setting Yes, in the hospital WE SAY YOU ARE NOT A CONSULTANT. PERIOD!!!!
Health › Re: Nma Strike: The Patients's Perspective by armadeo(m): 4:35pm On Jul 15, 2014
GentleMimi: Young man, being a consultant does not mean ''ownership'' of a human being. It means being an expert in ur field of work,so as to be able to give advice and top notch contributions towards the improvement of services.
the posts have four key functions: expert practice (max. 50%); research, evaluation and service development; education, mentoring and overview of practice; professional leadership.
Except in the hospital setting ( you know what ownership means so don't pretend) which johesu has kept ignoring. pls links to evidence that shows these various consultants exist in places where best international practices are carried out. we are waiting.
Health › Re: Nma Strike: The Patients's Perspective by armadeo(m): 4:15pm On Jul 15, 2014
adeoladrg: You think this is a fight about owning the patient? You'll understand better when you lose a loved one to a doctor's mistake that could have been corrected by a pharmacist or nurse.
this your line is stale.
Health › Re: Nma Strike, The Nurses' Perspective. by armadeo(m): 8:47pm On Jul 14, 2014
Dazzlee: I get what you're saying. And I agree with you, no one wants to be cheated on. I won't want to be cheated on too - I guess that answers your question. smiley

But then, I still wonder, is the title 'consultant' only meant for doctors? Because to my understanding, a consultant is someone who has a broad knowledge about a particular subject and is emloyed to give advice about it to other people.

Btw, @bolded.....I'm a lady. smiley And thanks for the correction. Radiographer, radiologist.....got it!
The title consultant is not meant for only Drs. there are consultant engineers tailors anything. As you said it simply means one who has attained a level of expertise in a particular field.

However in the hospital setting the title is reserved for specialist drs who are responsible for the treatment of the patient irrespective of the input from junior drs, nurses pharmacist etc.

That is why you hear terms like the Dr owns the patient, The consultant is responsible for anything that happens to the patient because it is expected that he/she is a specialist in that field and is able to take expert decisions in the management of the patient.
