we only see the world the way we are, since your mind can arrive at the conclusion of deliberately leaving a knife in the patient, it really is someone like you that would do that.

My initial statement was IN MY SCH.. So I was talking from my own experience. Till date I haven't seen or heard of a final year medical student who was kicked out. I stand to be corrected though.

sisiafrika: In OAU all departments under college of health sciences write d same MB in the 200level. To the poster above me. D med surg do only d anat, physio nd bch, while others do doz 3 plus their own departmental courses. No preferential treatment. And to those talking about JAMB sorces, u knw nothing about admission. JAMB cut off mark are set based on d number of students required. U don't expect D cut off mark of two courses with different number of applicants be d same. We all knw medicine. Attract d highest number of applicants, hence, common sense should tell u dat d cuut off mark would be higher dan Courses with much lesser applicants. And tell me, haven't u seen d best or d brightest been withdrawn? And d not so bright finishing with no issues? It points to one tin- dilligence and commitment. Intelligence will get u into medical schl but diligence will get you through it.
Me I don't know of OAU but where I finished from after year 1 the next major exams is yr 3. Mb written only by medical students. So this your year 2 mb me I don't know.

I also agree that diligence gets you through med sch.

agabaI23: The funny thing is that most of the medical students/doctors who are championing this debate here are those who paid money to get admitted in different forms. If there are 10 doctors/medical students here talking, especially those who are talking about sitting for JAMB, 8 of them didn't go through merit list. The doctors among them are likely those who spent extra years. The finest of doctors and students want you to experience them.
You know you are very right. Many people have paid to be admitted into medical school. Then I even heard a rumour that the vc will immediately admit for medicine when you come crying to him.

The medical school didn't care they just placed their usual fences. Over 30% drop out after yr 1 and that's just basic science class nothing to do with the medical school so you can imagine how many will finally finish.

Its not about starting the race its about reaching the finish line.

Smooyis: Good write up. Nonetheless i think there is need for collaboration among all the health workers. The doctors must show enough humility and understanding to realize that they cannot do it alone. It is a team work. And everyone is very important in that team. God bless Nigeria.
Drs know what team work is all about other members of the team don't like thier position in the team by virtue of their training. So round and round we go.

double0seven: 14. Furthermore, for purposes of specialization
after NYSC, the MLS takes additional minimum of
seven years of full-time studies to obtain
professional fellowship, M.Sc and Ph.D before
being appointed as a Consultant (Specialist) MLS
by health institution Boards. On the other hand, a
doctor training to become a consultant
pathologist (Specialist) undertakes only four years
of part- time training to obtain his professional
fellowship diploma since he has to concurrently
study, perform routine and on call clinical duties,
engage often in private practice and National
Association of Resident Doctors (NARD)
activism- equivalent of two years of full time
training. A simple comparative analysis of years
of cognate knowledge training of basic MLS and
Pathologist is at a ratio of 6:2.33 years while that
of Consultant MLS and Pathologist is at a ratio of
13:2.33 years in favour of medical laboratory
scientists. Given that the generally accepted
indices of epistemic professional authority are
years of cognate knowledge and training, it goes
without saying that the MLS is the appropriate
core professional in charge of Medical Laboratory
Services at all levels. This is recognized by the
approved scheme of service and by the law, a
fact ASSOPON's extravagant outpouring of
negative emotions cannot obliterate. It is left for
the public to then
judge who the dog is and who the tail is in
medical laboratory services delivery.

moshoodn: Truth is most doctors in Nigeria are not committed.

Most are in for the money.

What the hell happened to the Hippocrates Oath!

Only Nigerian Doctors strike in the world (quote me on this anywhere). Does that mean all other governments of the world are performing optimally in the Health Sector?

I'm not standing in for the FG, but if truly the docs respect the oath they took, they will be more diplomatic and tactical.

FGs all around the world are all evasive, so its not a Nigerian issue.

Coming to air to lay the issue to bare will only attact public sympathy to the more eloquent side.

I wish they resolve it soonest and people can get their treatments.

double0seven: I get it now; you guys want a different set of rules for Naija.

it doesn't matter what's happening in other countries, your own is that it must happen here for Naija.

As much as I try to see your points which is vituperated through so many fine grammar and eloquent writing, I can't get past the fact that your struggle is about self centeredness.

You wish to establish a caste system in Nigeria health sector which is not obtained in advances countries. Reminds of the caste system of white vs black before the whole thing crashed.

Dress it with embroidery however you like, the truth is your mission is self-serving, stop pretending you're doing because of any patients.
where in the world is it obtainable. the post i quoted asked two questions

1. where in the world are these consultants practicing in the teaching hospital setting
2. what where the qualifications required for them to attain this status.

after all its international practices, lets know how and why they got there before trying to import it.

there is no caste system in the health sector just division of labor which is what team work is all about.

let me add a third question on the issue of consultancy , what exactly do johesu members as consultants want to do that they aren't doing now, how does a johesu consultant benefit the patient.

sandijey: Well I was made to understand that the best hands are usually in public owned hospitals. Except maybe reddington and the likes. I also know that they refer some patients to luth. I have never viewed people who go to public hospitals as poor. I always felt they needed the best hands. But luth is not so poor as people think. The hospital bills are quite expensive for a public institution. Meanwhile based on what I saw, I still feel the younger generation of doctors are incompetent. I still have doctor friends in luth who smoke weed and keep punk hair. I just don't no how they combine it.
the best hands are usually in public hospitals doesnt mean the private clinics are staffed by quacks.

my issue on the status of the patients in public hospitals is not to deride or in derogatory terms. I am just being realistic with the facts on ground, you have read through this thread to see where Drs give their money ,even donate blood this is not tales by moonlight, it really bites out there. you must have heard about the 1 dollar and nigerian survival issue. many patients cannot afford to go to private clinics so they attend public hospitals and to say these patients will be diverted to a private clinic is something else.

You said it yourself you mum required a CT scan done and the one in Luth so you had to take her outside and get it done and bring the results back to luth. ( now you grew up in the hospital environment so you could understand)

let me tell you what the average Nigerian will say, wherever you did the Ct scan its the dr who sent you there that owns it.

I said before i have worked in both and i know the category of people i see MOSTLY in each.

sandijey: Do you also realise that luth is one of the best if not the best government owned hospital. They have very good hands. When you talk of trained and experienced doctors. You get them in luth. They refer a lot of people from private hospitals and other hospitals round Nigeria to luth. Luth will only refer u outside Nigeria. Or the case of when my mum was sick and the so called ct scan was bad. That is when they tell u to go to another place to do a scan and bring the result back to luth. It is wrong to refer patients to another hospital in luth. My friends dad almost got sacked. Most times its a deliberate effort that most of their machines that get spoilt don't get fixed on time.

2, I met some rich people in the ward. At least when u see someone that is well to do, u will no. It is not always about the money but about professionalism. And luth comes tops in that aspect. Just that it is either u stay in the private wing or u are an ex staff before u get a proper medical care and attention. That was what saved my mum.
from the above i assumed you grew up in or around LUTH, I have been to many hospitals in the country and many are outstanding in terms of professional hands not just luth. There are also many private clinics in lagos that can take on Luth anytime.

its not a delibrate effort to keep machines spoilt thats where the govt comes in, am not going to use my money to fix hospital property am I?

Rich people in the wards yes, they are they but i can categorically tell you that many of them are in private clinics not teaching hospitals.

my main issue is your statement of diversion of patients to private clinics i have worked in both and i can assure you that MAJORITY of patients in govt hospital cannot afford a private clinic.
