GAR3TH:
Lagos is not the only city that has a deep sea port, you also have warri, port harcourt, Onne and calabar. If anything its warri, port harcourt, onne and calabar that will be affected not Lagos. But i don't think Onitsha port has the capability to make a dent in any economic system. Onitsha river port is alot smaller than the other ports in the nation due to the fact that its a River port which means it will carry alot less traffic.

The river Niger CAN NOT carry cargo ships because its not deep enough even though it has been dredge. Most likely ferries or barges will be used to carry the cargo, which means the cargo ships will have to dock at lagos or onne and the goods will be transfered onto a ferry or barge which will then take it to onitsha.

Add to the fact that Onitsha river port doesn't YET have any direct rail connections like Lagos, Warri, Port Harcourt or Onne (u/c) I don't think onitsha port will be taking away any economic activity nor decongesting any other port in the nation.

the only thing the port will do is bring economic activity to onitsha and asaba.

http://fmt.gov.ng/uploads/NTM_Summary_July_2006.pdf
that is what the port in onitsha is all about.to reduce the wastage and improve the life span of that lagos-ore-benin-asaba-onitsha roads.

also it is to encourage inland water transportaion in that river niger axis and benue axis.onitsha port is not not supposed to be the only port in that dredged river niger axis.there are supposed to be other ports at different locations in that river so as to reduce pressure on our roads but hey we in nigeria do not seem to think about these things.

it is not even about cargo coming from overseas.what about transportation of goods within the country?
And you think that without state of origin, the nation would be truly united ?

Why are beroms killing Hausas since Jos is a no man's land as well as lagos and abuja

If you speak Lagos language, know and act like a lagosian then YOU ARE A LAGOSIAN AND NO ONE CAN SAY OTHERWISE unless you do not behave or speak Yoruba then you can easily be seen for who you are as a non-indigene.

People from Ogun and even edo, hausa and Itsekiris can pass because you can not tell the difference. That is the whole point of migrating to a region, You blend in with the indigenes even the point that they can not point you out.

Chikena
hausas are more likely pointed out in lagos than igbos since they hardly blend in in non hausa societies so stop all these nonsense talks

I can't disagree with you but do we have a choice? For them to pass their message across Nigeria and Africa, they need to speak and act like "The English" so as not to come off too culturally strong which might lead to insecurities unlike Yoruba movies. That is why nollywood "English" movies have a wide range of costumers and the Yoruba ones are usually bought by Yorubas and "Yorubas" inclined or "connected" people (as in, people that understand their POV like Edos, Itsekiris, Benin rep, Togo etc).
the poster is even talking a bit more about yoruba movies not even the english ones.did you not see that he wrote IFA?which groups practice IFA?

No doubt the minister was elated at the volume of work done at the Onitsha port where the indigenous contractor, Messers Inter Bau Nigeria limited had recorded 95per cent completion of the project which is awaiting commissioning by Mr. president before the end of the year.

Sadly however, the same success story could not be told of the Baro and the Oguta ports where, though appreciable progress have been made, problems associated with access roads and funding respectively continue to bog down the projects. Senator Umar has however assured that these issues would be tackled and resolved very soon. Speaking further, the minister said that legal problems associated with the Lokoja port would soon be settled.

This new route is a major achievement indeed and a revolution in the country's transportation system.
Without doubt, it will become the major artery for the transportation of foodstuff and industrial materials between North and South. Because water transport is so cheap and relatively maintenance free, it would lift the burden of heavy haulage of goods from our roads. It would be nice if both Edo and Ondo could be connected to it to relieve the roads (especially Lagos-Benin) off heavy timber traffic.
Agenebode in edo state was supposed to be one of the river ports to be built.i do not know the situation now.

i am not sure if a lot of nigerians are aware of the bolded

In what can be regarded as the first sign of the success of government's efforts at creating inter modalism in the transport sector, inland water transportation has lifted 430 tonnes of freight off the roads in the country.

This feat was achieved recently when an indigenous company, NINON Nigeria Limited began transporting goods from their factory in Ajaokuta to the marketers in Onitsha using the Ajaokuta jetty in Ajaokuta, Kogi State through the recently dredged Lower River Niger.

Thanks so much you have just spoken well please tell them.

The issue here is about an actor who was caught or suspected of carrying hard drugs I was so ashamed to see my fellow NL digressed the thread to become a full blown tribalist affair and started name callings it is a big shame I dont know whu some people refused to grow and see life in more different way.

I would say this over again that when I went the whole response on this thread it was my fellow Igbo man who started this tribalism attacking mess on the particular thread but please biko brothers why and why do we love sentiments? Why and why we love tribalism and hate? Why and why do we love name calling and insulting people? Please whyhuh.

Please guys drug traficking stuffs in Nigeria its both tribe that are guilty of it, if it is not Igbo person today it would be a Yoruba person so what is the big dealhuh Why is Baba suwe case now a Yoruba thing? Please lets stay out of all these rubbish, mentally derail issue that will help no one, I know my fellow Igbo would jump on me as per this post but I dont care the truth is where I stand I dont see myself as only Igbo guy but a "Nigeria" who love every good minded Nigeria and not any silly tribalist.

I hate tribalism with passion because it add no value to life rather it gives sadness without a cause because a hater never see happiness they are always sad and sadness kill so fast, I love life, I love humanity, I love my fellow  Nigerians who stand for the love and truth but if any one prefer to die a death of hate and disgusting tribalism good for him or her and shame on him or her. I'm just sick of all these nonsense tribal rants. Just my own view. God bless.
maybe when the other sides start their rants i hope you will here to caution them too as you usually seem to keep quiet when the westerners do their own

Baba Suwe mistakenly swallowed prop cocaine, says lawyer

“Far be it for him to be a cocaine pusher at his age and with his status as a Nollywood star” - lawyer.

Lagos - Baba Suwe, the popular Nollywood actor arrested on suspicion of smuggling narcotics, innocently swallowed prop cocaine on the set of a new movie, says his lawyer.

“Far be it for him to be a cocaine pusher at his age and with his status as a Nollywood star,” the said lawyer.

According to him, his client, being a method actor, asked the director of the film he's starring in, to put ordinary face powder into condoms for him to swallow as part of the movie plot.

But by some inexplicable mix-up that can only be the work of the actor's enemies, claims the lawyer, real cocaine ended up in the condoms instead of harmless powder.

The actor, said the lawyer, would never have knowingly swallowed real cocaine concealed in condoms and then proceed to attempt boarding an international flight.

As of the time of filing this report, officers of the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, were still force feeding the actor 'agbo jedi-jedi,'  a traditional local laxative, in an effort to encourage bowel movement.

cantell:
Is the igbo language dying?
It's awful and a big shame to see most grown ups and kids in non-igbo states speak other languages and yet they cannot say a single word in their language.
I once asked a guy i knew why he cannot speak his language(igbo) and he said; if i can speak igbo, will it take me to london?
I was so ashamed.
Meanwhile, this guy got an "A" in yoruba language in WAEC!
My cousins born in lagos do not speak igbo. They're not even comfortable when others(igbos) speak.
I love yorubas and hausas in terms of language and culture preservation.
When a language dies, future generations lose a vital part of the culture that is necessary to fully understand it.
Yorubas or Hausas born outside their states, even in foreign countries speak their language fluently.
When an igbo man stays in abroad for 5yrs and comes home, he forgets his language and torments the people around him with English.
It's a big shame and -1 for them.
Something should seriously be done to prevent Igbo language from dying off.
you should have asked him whether the yoruba he spoke has taken him to london.

, say Boko Haram’s activities are anti-Jonathan

Militant groups in Niger Delta have ordered northerners domiciled in the region to leave within seven days. The group, under aegis of the Egbesu Mightier Fraternity of Izon, in a statement by the four commanders of the Joint Revolutionary Council, namely, Commander Okiki Kene, Gen. Okin Sele, Gen. Korumah and Gen. Abu Mic, said they were been compelled to issue the ultimatum by the bombing activities of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

The statement, titled ‘Leave our land now within seven days’, which was addressed to the Muslim community in the Niger Delta, reads: “We are compelled by the present Boko Haram merciless bombing in the country, without verifiable developmental agitation. “Even now, there are killings going on in the North. The continuous killings of Christians in the North are unbearable to us now. Boko Haram has been planting bombs around churches and other places with clusters of the innocent.

“Its wild excesses are essentially a reaction to the presidential ascendancy of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. If we are actually one Nigeria, why won’t we allow other geo-political zone to rule the country? “Saudi Arabia is the centre of Islamic faith, yet, there are no single killing of Christian faithful in that country. Why all these killing of innocent citizens in reaction to Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential victory? “With this trend, we can’t live together. Leave Niger Delta now.

Your failure to leave at the expiration of this letter, we’ll start to kill any muslim we see in the Niger Delta region. “No section of this country is an embodiment of killing others. Muslims can’t live in our land freely (Niger Delta), while Boko Haram will be killing our people in their land. This is our message, If you like stay and test our ultimatum and see what will happen.”

The group reiterated its bloody past and threatened to shed blood again, if compelled to do so by those who refused to heed its quit order. “We have tasted bloody war during the days of our agitation for equal rights. Members of Boko Haram live among you and pray in the same mosques. So, you can’t claim that you don’t know where they are. “The truth is that no dispensation will ever be good in Nigeria, except from Muslim North. The North is out to fight the President with the Islamic sect. Enough is enough with this sect.”
