GAR3TH: Thats only $6,391,822 USD monthly, $76,701,864 a year, this is a real shame on nigeria's part. Suffolk County (local government) in the united states has an operating budget of $2.7 billion (N422 Billion) a year. A local government area in the USA has a larger Budget than an entire Nigerian state why, because it collects it majority of its budget from taxes. I hate comparing but people have to realize the scope of trouble alot of states in nigeria are in. More states in nigeria need to start IGR schemes in order to boost their budgets and stop relying of federal allocations. In reality federal allocations are MEANT TO BE Bonuses for states and not their main source of revenue. I'm glad states are now realizing that they shouldn't just sit and wait for federal allocation, this is a good move by Kano.
the should be 'forced' to do so by stopping allocation completely |

man-lover rights activists want Nigerian homophobic bill droppedOn November 1, 2011 · In News ABUJA (AFP) – A Nigerian lady-loving-lady physician burst into tears Monday as she made a case to lawmakers to stop parliament from passing a bill that seeks to criminalise same-sex marriage.
The bill, which has passed the second reading in the senate, calls for a three-year jail term for anyone involved in a same-sex marriage and five years for those that abet or aid the solemnisation of such unions.
Otibho Obiowu spoke for the lady-loving-ladies, man-loving-men, Bisexuals, Transexuals and Intersex in Diaspora (LGBTID) group at a senate-organised public hearing on the proposed law.About a dozen other members of the group attended the session and were under police protection to prevent any harassment from members of the public.
In tears, she told the panel that “LGBTID rights are human rights.”
“The fundamental human rights of intimate minorities are violated daily because of criminalisation of same sex relationship and societal prejudice,” Obiowu said. She said the consensus among scholars is that intimate orientation is not a choice and the bill “aims to punish people for what is essentially not their making http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/man-lover-rights-activists-want-nigerian-homophobic-bill-dropped/ |

You'll notice that we talked about the pros and cons to such an arrangement such as the temptation for the richest region to break away. Anyway, pros vastly out-weigh the cons. there is a saying in my language translates as thus 'if you are holding me to the ground you are also holding yourself to the same ground' the regions should be freed up to reach their potentials jare.we cannot continue on this part.with efficient management you will be suprised at the wealth the so called 'less endowed' regions can generate. |

harambe: This arrangement will ensure that each region gets zero allocation from the fed govt. The regions should be paying the fed government for maintenance of military, foreign affairs, customs and immigration. if you generate $10 billion in your region, you keep a substantial percentage of it. based on your cultural and political situation, you can create states, municipalities, councils or whatever local goverment system you want. the regions should be in charge of education, police, health, tourism, commerce, industry. in terms of commerce, the fed govt should only handle things like import/export duties and pay it back to originating states while keeping some. +1 |

Biafra is back in the news in a big way, thanks, in large measure, to the recent death of Steve Jobs, co- founder of Apple. In a bestselling authorized biography written by Walter Isaacson, we learn that Biafra had something to do with Mr. Jobs’ renunciation of Christianity. To paraphrase the story: as a 13-year-old, the late inventor extraordinaire had confronted his Lutheran Church pastor with a photograph of two starving Biafran children on the cover of Life magazine. The young Steve asked his teacher whether God was aware of the plight of the children. Once he was assured that divine omniscience implied that God had such knowledge, Steve Jobs, there and then, announced his divorce from Christianity. man the guy no even waste time |

No one can justify why some geopolitical-zones have 7 states, others 6 and 5. This is an example of gross injustice we practice in Nigeria. it might not make much difference if we did not turn federalism on its head.where it would have an impact is representatives to national assembly |

I inherited N40b debt – Fayemi On October 31, 2011 · In News OLA AJAYI, IBADAN GOVERNOR Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State has restated that his administration inherited a debt profile of N40billion from the past administration.
He said this Monday in Ibadan at a lecture organized by the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) to mark the 10th Anniversary of Premier FM, Ibadan which kicked off on Sunday.
The governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Oritentation, Mr. Funminiyi Afuye said the inherited debt was a big threat to the well being of the people of the state and consequently a threat to peace. He therefore called for proactive steps to check corruption by fighting it in a just and fair manner. This came as Senator Olufemi Lanlehin representing Oyo South in the National Assembly took exception to the way federalism is being practiced in the country. Senator Lanlehin, who was the chairman of the occasion commented on the topic of the lecture entitled “Peace as Panacea for National Development saying “Federal Government has no business handling matters relating to agriculture, transportation, labour and so on. This should be the major concern of State and local governments because they have direct link with major players in those sectors. He said as much as he would love to align with the call for the accommodation of state police to address the daunting challenges of insecurity across the country, he warned that there was need for caution in the area of procurement of arms and ammunition so that some of the governors don’t abuse the process in the long run”. He cited an example saying that in the immediate past government in Nigeria, some state governors did not behave better than armed bandits adding that to leave arms in the hands of such people would be very dangerous.
Lanlehin lamented further that “In Nigeria today, peace is becoming elusive in virtually all the sectors of our national life because we have not come to terms with some realities. For instance, the 1999 constitution does not help matters in that it does not reflect the status of Nigeria as a diverse nation.
“Peace is usually a product of justice and fairness without which there can’t be progress and development. Peace cannot be achieved when the privileged few treat the majority with disdain, he shttp://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/10/i-inherited-n40b-debt-fayemi/ |

KnowAll: State creation brings development closer to grass root THAT is a FACT. Let us look at Akwa Ibom State and Cross River State. If Akwa Ibom was not created the development in present day Akwa Ibom would not be there for all to see. In fact today Uyo has fly-overs and worth not meanwhile the old capital of Calabar is still stuck in its old glorious past.
Same thing Ibadan City, one would expect that City to have moved on since the hey days of Awolowo, but because they had bad managers since this civilain dispensation started they are stuck in the rut of under-development. Can you say the samething of Mimiko's Ondo State one the states created from Ibadan or Oshiomeles's Edo State one of the states created from former western Region-NO
We need good managers not mediocres that is the bottom-line. how about local councils within a region being empowered to generate their own revenue and take care of themselves.no more allocation(how i hate that word in nigerian context) from abuja. you cited ibadan.as big as ibadan is why can't they be allowed to generate their own revenue to take care of itself without abuja allocation.taxes and what ever money generated in natural resource in any local council or local governmet should at least 50% remain there while the rest goes to the region that local council belongs to. you stay in uk remember council tax? |

ITbomb: Assuming Sanusi is rite Gowon finished the joke britain stated, by creating 12 artificial states in an artificial nation they called nigeria. The government with 36 states which arose from equally artificial considerations instead of from resource oriented realities, have become unmanageable as productive and federating units. Federating unit means you give as well as take, not just a resource sucker or parasite tethered to the center by decree and corruption. Assuming nigeria does not divide as predicted: Most nigerians would not want a return to 3 regions. But we identify with the geo-political zones. So why not run nigeria as six states, with 6 economies, governments and federating states with Abuja run as neutral metropolis funded from the contribution of the 6 states? Each state with its own police administration and municipal administration(aka local governments) . One problem the suggestion for state autonomy is facing is that most states are currently too small to run autonomous, self supporting economies, e.g. for state police, etc. They don't have a sizeable economy to financially support certain things without FG intervention. So what makes them a state? But each of these six states can have a large economy, easily: 1. Niger Delta State 2. Middle Belt state ( will exclude/include certain new areas) 3. South-Eastern ( or Biafra ) state 4. South-Western ( or Oduduwa ) state 5. North-Western ( or Dan Fodio ) state 6. North-Eastern ( or Kanem Borno or Boko Haram ) state That is how those we are copying [USA] made sure the federating states can be autonomous and viable, in a voluntary union with a secession clause. With this structure, the state decides how many local governments ( better called municipal councils ) it needs, then create and fund them itself with tax-revenue. classic |

marvix: Hercules and Ekt let's discuss d issues leave d personalties politics is a deep game and takes strong conviction and courage to say d truth as it is.
SLS said some states spend 97% of their revenue paying civil servants d FG uses 70% these are serious issues he is suggesting we reduce number of states which would affect more nothern states than southern cos there would be more viable states in d south than in the north for sure. SLS is asking for consolidation of states we could possibly revert to regional style of govts if we take his idea serious.
Now compare him to El Rufai who never said anything while serving as minister and suddenly found his tongue after been displaced from office. I kno SLS has more to say but wld rather bid his time but one thing is for sure he can not be cowed and would gladly resign if pushed or pressured to do something he does not agree will b in d best interest of Nigeria, a govt official to take over a sitting presidents bank is no mean task, challenge and dare members in the NASS is no coward, he shld be prepped for presidency either in 2015 or 2019! not too sure about that.potentially s lot of northern states have enough agricultural and solid minerals to survive. |

fine, students will pay n25,000 in school fees and they will recieve a degree which in reality is nothing more than a certificate of attendance
they will then come back to nl to biatch about discrimination against lasu grads in the labor market. already, i am seeing the trend at work.
70% of the new hires are from covenant etal. and small wonder. our federal and state schools are so backward. . .i have a very bright it student from uniben , who has never worked with autocad before he came to our company, who has never worked with a computer but was "taught" C++. how will such a person be able to compete against grads of convenant or ghana universities who are taught with up to date methods etal?
the evil day is simply being put off. 90% of the lsu grads will come out and find they are unemployable because what they were taught is of no use in today's society. the really bright or lucky ones will get a pass, but that is where it will end.
its sad, but you need to com to terms with the fact that tertiary education i not for everyone. its for those who can pay. i have pointed out before that in the west, people start saving for their kids education from day 1. anyway, all is not lost. you dont want a quality education, there are always cheaper schools that are even worse. does increase in fees in nigeria automatically mean increase in facilities and infrastructure in the school hence better quality education? |

igbo2011: @Alj Harem Dud you need to set up a power point presentation about the industries of Nigeria. Then you can give it to a government official to look at and present it. Then maybe you can implement it. You can display how it can create jobs and do a rough estimate on the amount of jobs. Also say how it can be implemented. Then try and pitch it to some people in charge over an iPad or something. Then he might give you a job for the government. You can be the overall coordinator then you can have people on the side help you implement.
Also in agriculture it can be moringa and cassava as well.
Also what do you not like about the sports industry? i asked that question because you seem like straight up guy but it seems you do not really know what goes on in nigeria.example is the bolded. you think that government officials are not aware of these things? guy there are serious corruption and down right incopetence issues that i will not go into now |
