Ishilove: Inhumanity on all fours. It is quite unfortunate that Igbo people are labelled as ritualists but they brought it on themselves. From otokoto, ezego and co,it is always one story of ritual killing or the other coming from their part of the country. more like they expose what goes on in their domain instead of hiding it. |

A 30-year-old man, Kabiru Oseni accused of raping a 12-year-old physically challenged girl is now cooling his heels in Ilesa Prison. Kabiru, a father of a two-year- old girl, was alleged to have committed the crime at Adana compound, Gbonmi, Osogbo.
He was arraigned in an Osogbo Magistrate Court and pleaded not guilty. The Police prosecutor, Inspector Solomon Oladele said the accused had a carnal knowledge of his victim, who is a primary three pupil.
“After satisfying his sexual urge, Kabiru abandoned the poor girl in the pool of her blood and took to his heels. The physically challenged girl managed to find her way out of the room with stains of blood all over her. Some neighbours who saw her, took her to a hospital,” he said.
Kabir is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, unlawful carnal knowledge and assault. The offences contravened section 516(A) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun State 2003. Kabiru’s counsel, Mr. Seye Oluyombo’s plea for his client’s bail was not granted as the Magistrate, Olusola Aluko ordered that the accused be remanded at Ilesa prison custody. The case was adjourned till October 13, 2011 for mention.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) -- An Islamist insurgent-run radio station in Somalia says it is awarding guns, bombs and books to three children in a Quran recital contest.
Andulus radio station is run by the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab militia.
The station announced Monday that the first prize winner in the contest received a rifle and $700, the second prize winner got a rifle and $500, and the third prize winner received two bombs.
All three children also received religious books.
Al-Shabab is battling Somalia's weak, U.N.-backed government. The militants have recently been weakened by famine in territory they control.

Pukkah: The culture of begging and pleading has been gradually but steadily entrenched in Nigeria. It's part of our inept system for it's quicker to beg, sometimes calling God's name, and pleading with the victim to forget and move on. The forgiveness happens, even if it's reluctantly, without probing into the immediate and remote causes of the problem in the first place.
It even happens in our personal lives: a bus driver driving dangerously hits a car and all the bus passengers alight to start begging the car driver/owner, telling him that he should leave it for God. If he refuses, they start calling him names and may even beat him up. The bus passengers do not bother to let the law take its course because they want to get to their destinations on time. There's no investigation as to why the accident happened and what can be done by the system to prevent a recurrence. And so, sadly, the cycle of 'accidents' continues.
I guess it's this culture, which has become pervasive, that defined the mindset of those who praised Mr Obasanjo's visit to Yusuf's family. As usual, they wanted the crisis to be over 'sharp sharp'.
Now, the failings of that 'kia kia' approach are beginning to manifest.
As a country, we need to roll up our sleeves and courageously tackle our problems without despising the painstaking approach. We must be fair and firm and stop telling the obstinate 'car driver' that he's the bad man. We must let the aggrieved vent their grievances and permit the law to take its course. We must focus on the cause and not the effects and stop sweeping issues under the carpet for the sake of brief peace or temporary relief. These are the building blocks of a good and just society.
Do we all think that Niger Delta amnesty has REALLY worked because of the 'brief' respite? Have the grievances which led to the Niger Delta agitation in the first place been addressed? Yes or No? very true |
