Politics › Nigerians, Other International Students To Pay More In Uk Varsities by asha80(op): 2:27am On Nov 26, 2010 |
Nigerians, other international students to pay more in UK varsities , As students protest enters Day 2 From ADEWALE SANYAOLU, Manchester, United Kingdom Friday, November 26, 2010 • Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section Nigerians wishing to acquire British university certificates should brace up for more financial commitments. The United Kingdom Government is set to initiate a new regime of tuition fees which would see Nigerians and their counterparts from other parts of the globe pay more. However, students’ protest across the UK entered its second day yesterday over the proposed fee hike. The proposed fee hike regime would compel Nigerians and other international students from outside the European Union (EU) member countries to pay more for university education both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Currently, Nigerians studying for either undergraduate or any of the postgraduate research or taught programmes pay between £8,000 to £9,000 per annum but under the new regime of fees to commence in 2012, international students would have to pay between £13,000 and £15,000 depending on the programme. The fee hike is also to affect British, Wales, Northern Ireland and other EU nationals wishing to study in any UK university from 2012. Currently, British and other EU nationals pay £3,290 per annum, a figure which is to rise to £9,000 when the fee hike regime takes effect. Investigations by Daily Sun showed that the recognised universities in the United Kingdom had a total of 20, 090 Nigerian students in 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 sessions. While 10,000 students were admitted to UK universities in the 2007/2008 session, the figure increased to 10,090 in the 2008/2009 session. About 3,000 students from across UK gathered in Manchester City Centre to protest government plans. The Daily Sun reporter who witnessed the protest in Manchester yesterday discovered that the students disrupted public peace and destroyed property in the course of the protest. In an interview with Daily Sun, a Nigerian postgraduate student in the Department of Human Resource Management (HRM) in the University of Salford, Manchester, Mr. Afeez Olalekan Olawoyin explained that the reason by the British Prime Minister, Mr. David Cameron for the proposed fee hike remained unjustifiable. Olawoyin maintained that the argument by Cameron that the fee increase was meant to make UK universities competitive with its peers in the US, China and other parts of the world, while also raising its standard, was not tenable. The HRM international postgraduate student argued that the proposed fee hike should have left out international students who over time have had to pay thrice the fees British nationals were paying, with almost a yearly increase. “So, with this proposed hike, I believe international students should be left out of the whole fee hike proposition. We have always been the ones funding British university education. For instance, in 2009, income from international students was £2.2 billion. That to me is a staggering figure. And I believe this is the time for international students to enjoy some liberty from relaxed fee hike,” he said. http://sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2010/nov/26/national-26-11-2010-008.htm |

Kobojunkie: I am definitely for taller buildings to help save land but that is not what he was probably referring to there. More times than not, when Nigerians think of cities, they think tall SHINY buildings which I suspect that is what @Horus was getting at.
I myself believe people need to be forced to pay more if they choose to build less than 3 storey homes in Lagos. They need to borrow a leaf from Onitsha |

In answer to your comments above, Obama is a democrat. The National Rifle Association of America (powerful gun association/lobbying group) has always voted Republican, it would be foolish to have them endorse a democrat during a primary. Organisations vote along party lines to protect their interests and if they have to endorse a candidate during a primary then that means they are members of that party. I listed the states above to show the maths, the SE is not PDP, why is an umbrella body endorsing a candidate during a primary? Just doesn't make sense. Maybe a little patience until primaries are over before making declarations would help. when did abia become apga? |

Even if we look at the £6000.00 figure which I'm sure no uni will charge, it isn't a small sum by any measure. The Uk is just screwing itself deeper and deeper into droppings, don't be shocked if in the next 15 - 20 years we are recieving British refugees and making yanga about it. he is telling u the truth, and u are here saying he is naive, i ask who is naive, is it u that want to still vote for corrup people that are been recycled for us year in year out or a new intelligent person that would do things right i think nigerians are not ready for change because of people that still want to keep voting for corrupt leader
when nigeria is ready, there would be a revolution,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,mark my words so what you deduce from what i have been posting is voting for the status quo look i no get time for you. jason12345: as i said earlier, it is not naivety it is common sense. nigerians always think they are smart, that is way we fail to develop as a nation.
now, if a "political party" (which by the way, is a group of retarded, semi-illiterates) picks any of those candidates would you vote ? pls be honest. do you think people who have invested billions in election rigging would be waiting to lose an election? do you think some of them do not want development? but when people are too "scared or smart" to vote for the good leaders then you have what the world calls nigeria.
they so called candidates are chosen by delegates (the same cabals). and what makes you think they will pick any of those candidates? who are you talking about in the second bolded? |

jason12345: the structure can only be changed by the voters! even if the election is rigged, do you not think the electorates would demand their elected's mandate? eg mko. we cannot just wait for something to happen or, "by chance we would elect a good leader" it is a false sense of security! what we should do is vote for someone that is not a product of the system not someone in the system itself. such naivety.ok tell me which of the poltical parties have adopted those type of people you are talking about as presidential candidate? who choose party flagbearer in elections?electorate or party caucuses who are already part of the system? |

jason12345: my brother, you have always understood the politics in Nigeria. unfortunately, let see 2011 and 2015! all ethnic groups can work to get in fairness in spirit and truth. but you have to get out of the system. GJ is part and parcel of the cabal. he was chosen by the cabal. he works for the cabal. i mean, he has never been elected to a political office. can't you sense opportunism? take your time to think about it . even as i am not in nigeria, i can sense it. the so called geopolitical zones can sense it.
before we can move forward, we have to elect someone OUT OF THE SYSTEM, OUT OF THE CABAL NOT IN IT!!! to indulge you can you tell me one person that is OUT OF THE SYSTEM and how it could be done? |

Business › Re: Mumu Nigerians - Power Generation: Jonathan Projects 20,000mw By 2014 by asha80(m): 12:37am On Nov 20, 2010 |
netotse: e sure me die say you never read the roadmap. . .when you read it we can discuss maturely, without your having to throw conjectures left right and centre. Heck the roadmap even lists how govt expects to achieve said 20,000MW, or are you saying you've read the roadmap and discovered that the plan isn't viable?
@all jonathan's plan is heavily dependent on foreign investment on the power sector which in turn is heavily dependent on the reforms being successful.
by the way,
there's no legislation needed for the reforms(but then again, if y'all read the roadmap you'll know this)
we have 4000MW now, the NIPP is to provide circa 5000 out of the 20,000MW so what we need in four years is around 9000MW, it takes around 30months to complete a steam station(in sane times) i dont know how long you need for the EIA sha. Who's to say if 10 companies are willing to commit the necessary funds to construct a 1100MW station each it cant happen? when we say it's impossible, what are we basing that claim on? are we speaking from fact or we're speaking emotionally?
@kobojunkie under jonathan, PHCN was able to best the record of highest actual power generation, it was 35XXMW set during OBJs time, but earlier this year they were able to achieve 37XXMW, what did he do differently? he made the gas available. Utorogu gas plant has been shut down for upgrading so it's expected that gas availabilty would be improved when it comes back on, but of course, if you had read the roadmap you'd know this.
It isn't magic, the roadmap is available, heck there's even a 56page summary for people that'd the whole document too large to read. It really doesn't speak well of individuals when they dont read the roadmap and proceed to mouth off at any given opportunity.
case in point: http://digitalizednigeria.com/directory/2010/11/09/tuc-seeks-core-investor-option-for-phcn/ in the link above the president of the TUC is quoted(on the 9th november) as saying that govt should not privatize the companies, that what government should do is get core investors and sell 51% of the companies, not a bad idea right?
but that's what exactly the government is planning to do , it's in the roadmap for crissakes(which came out august 28th or something), it means the nuisance didn't read the roadmap before he came to play to the gallery, and of course some mumu nigerians will be nodding their head and remarking on how the TUC president hit the nail on the head but govt never seems to listen to good suggestions.
i blame the government though, their PR is terrible, they're letting all sorts of quacks parade themselves as experts and feed the people all sorts of lies.
imagine the president of the 2nd most important workers union in nigeria being recorded making a fool out of himself in the media and they didn't take him up on it. . .smh. Make them just set me on all these quacks first. . .shior! guy you seem to be an expert on power.i want to ask what is wrong with using coal to generate power? |
