INEC wants ₦55b for voters register

July 22, 2010 03:18PM
print email

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it will require ₦55.1 billion to organise a “substantially more credible” voters register ahead of the 2011 general election.

The commission’s chairperson, Attahiru Jega, told a delegation of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which paid him a courtesy visit earlier today that, “We can use ₦55 billion as the cost of equipment alone if we buy directly from the manufacturers since it will cost 2,000 dollars per unit.

He explained that the equipment “will be a laptop-based unit plus the accessories for finger printing and a high resolution camera that can capture the pictures and complete the entire exercise within a maximum of 15 to 20 minutes.” He however noted that a review of the procurement process will save about ₦16 billion. He noted the problems that bedevilled the process in 2006, “As soon as the contract was signed with credible partners, they were abandoned and fake equipment was purchased, some with expired licences and that was what affected the voter registration exercise in 2006”.

I honestly don't get this thing about "teaching one's lect". My parents never "taught" me to speak. I just picked up on it, as I grew, and it wasn't just my parents. It was adults in general. At amaala meetings, clan picnics, at home, etc. I would always hear my parents & other adults conversing with each other, and from there, I picked it up. I really don't think it is strictly a matter of being "taught" one's lect.
Do you think it is every body that goes to amaala meetings?

Not everyperson has the ability to pick up languages easily.

It is not strictly it but it is a confirmed sure way a language can survive in this era especially for an ethnic group like igbo that are too pragmatic with life in generall.

Where you not the one looking for some rather abstract english words in igbo? You think a language that is not used as a medium of teaching in school is going to survive that long?

Do you know the effect of using english as a medium of teaching right from birth while u just learn your so called mother tongue just by listening?

Like i asked someone else can u tell me the meaning of 'generator' or 'radio speaker' in your 'lect'?

Africans have to think deep.

Ok what is generator in yoruba?

Can you speak yoruba for ten mins without an english word coming out of your mouth?

The more we begin to understand how most things we subjectively and nonchalantly do today came about, the more we begin to realize out place in the whole scheme of things.

Most times we just think things are main to be and not subject to changes and deviations because we fail to understand what it is all about. We fail to understand that it is about dynamism,it is about adaptation, about essentiality and most of all about survival.
I do not think most africans especially nigerians understand this. That is why i respect Asians.
I already answered this. . . . did you miss this part in the article that you "read"?

Even if Igbo or any other language is being taught as a course, it doesn't guarantee "long-memory" of that language. What guarantees it as how often it's being spoken between peers, family, friends and neighbors. A lot of grade 5-12 children were taught foreign language as a course here, barely 1% of these children speak the language fluently because English is what they speak at all time.

Wogu is right, the blame goes to the parent.

As true as this is, I still disagree with it. English should be ONE of the country's official language.

This is not about inferiority. . . . as you claimed in your last post. Do you know how powerful English is? That's what will make you and Koshiniwa understand each other. That's why I said that in a global world, English is a very important tool and should be adjusted and fit into each country's list of official languages undecided
There is a difference btw teaching igbo as a course and using it to teach things like social studies, science, agriculture etc.Babs Fafunwa knew what hye was saying when he proposed this in 1985.

Nobody said English should not be learnt. There can or should be english language learning schools rather than using it as a language of taught from nursery school.

Everytime globalization.I wonder how that has really helped the country.Maybe South Korea that used to be our mate use english as a language for learning.

Actually English is a Germanic language. The original language of Great Britain was a Celtic language that was similar to Scottish, Welsh and Irish. English is a Romance Language that is descended from Latin just like Spanish, Italian and French. Plus, after the Norman invasion, French mixed with Anglo-Saxon language that was brought after the Roman left the island as their empire was crumbling.
Are you sure?I thought it is portuguese, french, italian and spanish only that descended from latin.

Yea, if English was also encouraged [official] in her country, ppl like her wouldnt have a problem with immigrating.
Ok, this makes more sense.

lol, I knew you were lost when I read your first response. What are you talking about now? smiley grin
You fail to think deeply.

i said initially that for any language to still remain relevant it has to be a language of taught or learning in school were that language is dominant.

English, french, italian, spanish, dutch.deustch and even swahili are all language of taught and learning. The more a language becomes a language of taught and learning the longer its durability because new words or words for new inventions will always come out.Tell me what is 'generator' in yoruba?

Also a country need not use a 'foreign' language as its laguage.Example i have met amny dutch people that can speak english but english is not a language of learning in holland but dutch. They only learn it because of english language schools there.

I disagree with EzeUche. . . . setting your language as an official language for your country is really not a smart idea. Esp when you want to join a global world.

My Burkina Faso friends [her official language is French] came here to find a better life, but finds it hard to speak/understand English. I usually help her with all her documents, hell, I know her visa ID # in my head. Now tell me, how will ppl like her make it easily in a global world without a lil assistance.

English should just stay the World's official language for every country jor undecided
All these hiding behind global world to hide inferiority complex in africans is funny

I will always defend the carpet crossing incident. Besides, without the carpet-crossers, AG won the most seats.
Each region should be led by someone from that region because an outsider can not love your house more than you. If he appears to do so, be very careful. Before you try to lecture me about Zik leading the West, first campaign and ensure the election of a non-Igbo in any of the Eastern states. Can a French man be PM in England or can an English man be Chancellor in Germany?
I do not care for the arrangements in Nigeria at present. I am for Confederationism, True Federalism or Separation in that order. Let every region manage its resources. Dependence on oil is what has led to our incompetent leaders ignoring viable and profitable ventures all over Nigeria. Every part of Nigeria is blessed and not just the Niger delta.

You can keep trying to personalise issues here or you can try to be a bit more objective; its your prerogative whatever you choose to do. You want to have a debate with people while you are constantly accusing them and trying to discredit them.

I have told you before and I will tell you again, if Nigeria ever gets a national conference to address issues, including those from the 60's, don't think that the other sides will just turn up to listen to you attack them. Everyone will fight their own corners. The more you accuse, the less you get through to them.
Your comparision here is off.

Olusegun Mimiko, the Ondo State governor, yesterday lamented the huge amount of money Nigerians spend on schooling in countries like United Kingdom and United States and said it was enough to develop the nation’s educational system.

Mr. Mimiko said this at the opening ceremony of the capacity building workshop for newly recruited staff of the state ministry of education quality assurance agency at Ade Super Hotel in Ondo. He said it was a pity that Nigerians are spending money to acquire knowledge in developed countries of the world at the detriment of the nation’s education system.
It is government that is meant to build and facilitate building of schools not private people.

Oh it is very very true. Tell me why they hold the nightly meetings? I know of a federal government owned establishment where they have infiltrated. Many Yoruba's that hold positions of power suddenly die. And Igbo's have created positions in which they hold the highest power with Yoruba's in Yoruba land. I mean, one position that is supposed to have a Yoruba in charge has been split into two. One Igbo and one Yoruba must now hold this position. I will not mention the establishment, but this is very true. One day, Yoruba's will wake up. And they must, because this can never be the case in Igbo land. Or are you scared that i am exposing your fellow brother's activities? Even other tribes in the establishment are getting frustrated by their ambitions.
guy all these na paranoia.night meetings indeed.when they are probably home with their families or at some nkwobi joint they will be holding nightly meetings.chai nigerians.

The ability of Igbo's to mock their hosts and people that open doors for them has put them in trouble with the North, and i forsee trouble with the West in future. People can only take so much crap. Yoruba's open their doors for so many opportunities for them, and even a safe place to live but this is what they get over and over. Go to establishments in Yoruba land, Igbo's hold their nightly meetings scheeming on how to takeover these things from youruba's. Which they sucessfully do, by infiltrating and putting all their people in strategic positions. These cannot be possible in the east. But still they open their mouths. Yoruba's need to wake up and NOW! Igbo's need to know their place. It is becoming too much now.
Alarmist theory.Paranoia is not good.

Actually yorubas can outrightly asphyxiate igbos in the east when it comes to taxi business since igbos are just not good at it.

I had that debate with a few of the NL Igbo sons who were arguing that Zik had every right to be the premier of the West. An Igbo man leading the Yoruba, like the Yoruba's were some backward set of people. Even in the North, citizens were voting for candidates who had no education, yet Zik wanted to be premier of the West. No Easterners won seats in the North, No Northerners won seats in the North or West, and no Westerners won seats in the North or East. Several Easterners won seats in the West, yet Ndigbo keep accusing the Yoruba of introducing tribalism into politics when it was a simple case of the Yoruba being very liberal and progressive.
Did you mean won sit in the east or north? If it is east pls check name Umaru Altine.

You know what, i support you in this motion. I blame Yoruba's for always being open and giving Igbo's especially opportunity in their land. They are never appreciated, always insulted by these same people. If you believe in one Nigeria so much, how many Yoruba's at that time were given the same opportunity as Zik in the Eastern region? When you can show proof of this please come back. Igbo's are too greedy. Not satisfied with seats, they always want to take over the whole thing. KAI!!! see you fighting for Azikiwe to be given the highest seat in the western region. We aint even talking about an Edo person, all the way from the east. na wa oo. Yoruba's are in trouble and are really very foolish.
First you will ask whether any yoruba came over to the east to contest. Also read the name Umaru Altine.

welcoming people - just to have it thrown back in our faces.

I hope things will change in the future. Its not their fault its yorubas fault for even allowing non westerners to feel comfortable.

to the point yorubas Obas are actually allowing eze ndigbo title of different states to remain. there is even a yam festival in OYO stat CAN YOU IMAGINE!
Everything that has an advantage has a disadvantage.Non westerners have helped to develop lagos a great deal. However you will always get some non westerners 'insulting' westerners.
