nextstep: I'll reiterate: we have to condemn all those who sell things that harm any member of our country (whether hard drugs or abused prescription medicine), because we are all in this together. An entire generation of our youths are being decimated in the core North.
I understand that what' we're talking about here is prescription medicine. I also feel what we all have a responsibility to make sure drugs are not abused. I would like to see those importing/selling these drugs support tighter laws regulating the supply of these drugs. Perhaps one should only get them under the discretion of a pharmacist, licensed medical professional, or be only sold the amount that is prescribed for treating symptoms of cough and pains. Those who sell outside these controls (i.e. illegally) should be sanctioned.
Codeine and tramadol are both narcotics - controlled substances (not illegal, just controlled) - prescribed to an treat moderate to severe pain. They have a high risk for addiction and dependence, and can cause respiratory distress and death when taken in high doses or when combined with other substances, especially alcohol.
There are many fine points to debate and argue about, but I honestly feel this is a ticking time bomb. have you heard the name dahiru mangal?that should answer your question about people involved in bringing in some of these things(he is not the only one but a major player) |

nextstep: To my brothers all over Nigeria: to my Hausa brothers; to my Igbo brothers; my Yoruba; to my Igala, Fulani, Itshekiri, Anioma, and so many much more, please lend me your ears and at least listen to what I have to say with an open mind.
This is the second "dog-whistle" I've heard this week about this issue. For those who don't know, the phrase "Dog-whistle" in politics is a messaging technique employing coded language that appears to mean one thing to the general population but has an additional, different, or more specific resonance for a targeted subgroup (wikipedia)
We're here arguing about demand and supply. One side argues that Igbos too love money to care about people's welfare, while the other side argues that without demand, there'd be no supply. Both sides may have valid points (as if this was debate team) but are missing the crucial issue, and the looming danger.
I'm from Asaba area, so whoever wants to discredit my opinion can latch unto something.
It wasn't so long ago that our Igbo brothers were selling so much fake drugs that they put the lives of millions of children, their relatives, and loved ones jeopardy. To quote Dr. Dora Akunyili (an Igbo woman by the way) "so many of (her) countrymen and women (were) fighting killer diseases like malaria and tuberculosis with little more than sugar syrup and chalk tablets, cynically packaged to look like the real thing"
The majority of people who threatened her life in order to continue their line of business were mostly - it must be said - Igbo. This is a fact. Without her brave and selfless struggle - which sees that even pure water sachets have an approval stamp - a lot more people would be dead or barely living with badly damaged bodies.
We have to condemn all those who sell things that harm any member of our country (whether hard drugs or abused prescription medicine), because we are all in this together. Entire youths are being decimated in the core North. For those who are defending them, the criminals you're defending because of tribalism or ethnicity don't give a damn about whose lives they destroy - even yours and your loved ones. Criminals, like corrupt politicians, come from all parts of Nigeria, and the irony has always been that: those who defend them due to tribalism, are the very ones who suffer.
Now to the dog-whistle, which a lot of us appear to be deaf to:
Our children are massively into drugs because there is massive, unceasing and incessant supply. We must staunch the supply. Then review our laws. Then detoxify our children. Or simultaneously and concurrently.
Pan-Arewa, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), Northern CAN, Usman Bugaje’s Arewa Research and Development Project (ARDP), the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and those Arewa October Youths must just have to collaborate and do something in unison, for once.
We just have to do it, and may Allah make it easy for us.
Now, I'm not a fortune-teller, nor a prophet with divine vision, but I can tell if it's going to rain by how dark the clouds look. And I'm saying though it may looks sunny now, the clouds are gathering. Are we prepared to deal with a horde* of drugged-up youths who have been given orders to wipe you out? We can debate about demand-side or supply-side economics, but when the horde hears and responds to the whistle, all they will know is that "the suppliers must be wiped out".
I wish I had a bigger platform to make this appeal: we have to condemn drug trafficking no matter who is doing it. There are many other ways to make a good living, by making things and offering services that benefit us. It does us no good to defend activity that will turn around and bite us, or a loved one. We must be our brothers' keeper no matter where he is from because it's only then we can prosper as a nation of black people.
*To my northern brothers, please don't take offense at the word horde... I only mean it within the context of a group of people who are under the influence of drugs.
Oh, and to those who think that splitting the country will solve all our problems: some criminal Igbo traders happily sell counterfeit drugs and parts to Igbo people too. drug trafficking here implies illegal drugs..the drugs in question here are not and they are not fake |

slowice: Yes they ve seen the problem, they want to deal with problem but they just ve to put the blame on somebody or a tribe to make it easier for their people to act. History has show that for the people of Northern Nigeria to act they must ve to blame the Igbos somehow. I live close to a place in ph where we ve large numbers of Northerners, in my years I ve observe that some of them re always sniffing stuff in a bottle or hanky n by this time hard drugs isn't popular at all, you hardly see guys smoking or doping publicly. Drug addiction ve been prevalent in the north for many years but they are just paying attention now n looking for a tribe to blame as usually. they are doing that now because it is now affecting their elite(kids and women) |

Drug addiction is so bad that victims can go to any length to satisfy their hunger for drugs. you dey mind him..i got a guy here in abuja that some of these youths broke into his chemist shop because the guy stopped selling codeine and tramadol..they probably thought he was lieing when he told them he no longer sold them..they scattered and ransacked the shop. |

nextstep: You have a good point. Initially, I was going to say: "nobody forced them to become junkies...", but on a deeper level, one needs to listen to the subliminal message being sent, which is: "Igbo are responsible for all your problems, from poverty to drugs abuse". In these months running up to elections, dog whistles like these need to be carefully monitored and countered. what this scenario seems to.suggest is that the average person over there can't think for himself |

Elliot2: whatever! whether the medication is legal or not,we all will agree that people now abuse it,leading to grave consequence. And therefore stakeholders are looking for means to address it. The above Prof has only hinted that the suppliers of those drugs-whether their intentions were good or not-are most the Igbo's. It is their problem, and they have identified the source,so please we should leave them to sort their people's issues. if they are truly concerned about their people addictions to these drugs(I actually feel it is the because the elite's kids have joined the fray)they should find out why their people are aggressively seeking out avenues to get high that highlighting just one aspect of the issue |

Elliot2: If you are addicted to sex,and ur girl fails to turn up while u r on heat, can u go to bed like that? won't u masturbate to free yourself? Those guys have been introduced to drugs and are addicted, therefore they will try anything to give them highness. The point is,who is introducing them to this life?-it is the supplier! no body was born a drug addict-he or she was introduced to it at some point. so the major culprit is the supplier, without whom none will be victim. Please,we should leave the northerners to solve their own issues. I don't know what business is with the Igbo man who is not in the north, unless u are part of the drug network. your first two sentences or questions show me you do not even understand what I am getting at..what made them addicted to gutter fumes and soakaway pits in the first instance?hope you know that addiction start far back before the 'power' of codeine and tramadol became known? I repeat why was that addiction there in the first instance?you realize that even if codeine and tramadol are curtailed they will find other outlets? |

Elliot2: If this is the kind of attitude u guys will put up in ur Biafra,I think it will be a terrible place. the prof pointed out that from those that have been arrested, it shows the Igbo's are the major suppliers of the drugs the youths abuse. you can't counter that observation! So what the hell are u guys ranting?! do you want them to let your brothers be simply because they are not forcing the northerners to take or abuse it? Can you say that to the Malaysian and Indian govts., argue for your brothers in different cells and have them freed? take this biafra talk to the dustbin as I am not interested..I repeat if you are disciplined around alcohol and prescription drugs you deserve to shut up and find out why people abusing it are doing so in the firsr instance...as for the Malaysian and Indian issue wrt to this I guess you do not know the difference between legal and illegal drugs |

Elliot2: I don't know why the igbo here are antagonising the man for this open truth that their brothers are the major suppliers of drugs to the north, therefore causing the epidemic. This attitude of "them against us" is becoming disgusting. I can remember my nysc days in kogi stay, where I served had the Igbo's exclusively as owners of all shops and supermarkets. You need to see how both the old and young drink to stupor from the dry gins supplied by those guys. They don't care about the effect those things have on the consumers, all they care is the profit. It is very bad,and when drug enforcers go after them no body should say "victimization". yes blame shop sellers for the indiscipline of drinkers you just can't make this up |

tiger28: this aint no trash.....this is a FACT!!!.Those that have been arrested transporting the drugs are igbos.if EVERYONE thinks that this is ok because they aren't forcing the northerners to use it then we shouldn't be angry when our brothers are arrested in malaysia. This is how it all started....when we love money so much that we dont care about the well being and health of our own brothers and sisters then something is inherently wrong with us as a people. if you do not solve the issue why those guys are hooked on drugs in the first instance if you like wipe out the whole igbos in nigeria it wouldn't solve up to 10% of the drug issues in the north. |

THE CHEMIST OR THE PERSON THAT WENT TO BUY MEDICINE AND START DRINKING LIKE FANTA?

THUS, THE TITLE IS MISLEADING. the "advantage' the south has is that alcohol is freely taken there unlike in the muslim north..but the guys in the muslim north are also humans who want a form of escapism from their own issues so since they cannot drink alcohol freely because of religous injunctions they have to seek other ways to gain relief |

I understand most Igbo politicians have this hatred and jealousy for Okorocha and are behind all the media propaganda against his person and his State in order to humble him.
