I feel we don't value education anymore...let me tell also tell you that there is another dangerous situation we have found ourselves but it seems we dont see the danger and that is the danger of using nysc members as teachers in secondary schools all around the country....i mean are we serious at all? A lot these present graduates are from these universities in which there are lots of question marks..yet they are posted to secondary schools(public) to go and teach whatever is in their head when they are not even trained to teach! Also there is also the issue of continuity as youth service is for a year..which means my English teacher from jss 1 to ss 3 is likely to be six

Lagos had an economic advantage no doubt, but they have made some great efforts in the last several decades to ensure that advantage is not lost. It is a competition between states and not a charity case

The real.MVP is however Ogin state who have decided to reap the rewards of proximity to Lagos as a fat growing industrial complex
not sure about the level playing ground for that 'competition'...moreover most of the rds in those ogun industrial axis in agbara and ibafo are in decrepit condition so I wonder the real effort of the ogun govt here and it seems more like a spill over effect of congested Lagos and companies looking for cheaper and more expansive lands to locate their industries to feed the congested lagos...more like the situation of Onitsha commerce spilling over to asaba despite the hopelessness of delta governments over the yrs

The journey of a thousand years starts with a step. As you said yourself the 2016 budget

Most of the seaport developments have either been budgeted for and in progress and therefore don't need any more attention until further notice. A great number are all either state organised PPP
the way you wrote about the present fg having an intergrated plan about infrastructure made me believe you are privy to some kind of document or a link online

You should have a read of the budget. Don't act as thou you are oblivious to the actions of the FG in the past few months since the ministers got elected
first what I read about rds during fashola's briefing was that federal rds connecting states (especially high traffic ones) would get immediate attention( the particular rds were not specified ) ..i later came across some snippets of the budget and came across some rds that the budget wanted to address( but I don't think I saw all the rds 2016 budgeted for because some high traffic rds were absent?

I have read about amechi and ph and aba rail and it ends there

I have not heard about anything concerning sea port development so pardon me

America - Nigeria.

Now who is confused, do you understand the golf in our respective economies, the economy of California is bigger than that of the whole of Nigeria. We are speaking if an organised system, more ships dock and get processed at the Oakland port daily than three major countries in west africa combined.

Using the same analogy do you know how many airports and train stations America has. My good friend come back when you realise demand is relative.

Not only does America have a population that dwarfs ours, its has an economy we can not aspire to in the next 20 years unless we do 2 years of dry fasting and prayers and then hope we get lucky.

I have not said Onne is not viable or is not crucial in our national development, I've just raised some valid points why many vesel may shy away from it for now.
At present we have a FG who have an integrated plan to improve infrastructure and diversify the economy and onne is an integral part of that, we have a FG who know the rail and road system has to be in place and functional to support goods and services brought in and out of Nigeria, a FG who would not use the completion of the very necessary 2nd Niger bridge as a political leverage.
sorry do you have links to these intergrated plans road, rail and seaport? I have once searched for it but did not find it

very sound analysis bro. this present predicament should be a great life's tutorship to each and everyone of us.
Nigeria need total overhaul of her economic system. one of the things i noticed is that our economy is not really participating or integrated into the global economy. the government need to come out with strategies that will integrate us into the global economy. also the government must prioritize that almost all the money that comes in should be channeled to infrastructure especially power. once our power capacity is improved, it will enable the industrial capacity to take off. also I believe our educational system must be totally overhauled systematically, because for Nigeria to develop and be a big player in the global economy, we must have sophisticated educational system, not what we have now.
our educational system is still stuck in the 50s albeit a low quality version

Lagos is the centre of commerce and very attractive for investors because of the relative security. In the early to mid 2000s the actions of MEND pushed soo.much investors away from that side, how would dangote build a mega refinery in PH when he can't be sure of the safety of his staff or investment.

The success of Lagos at the detriment of other states is because of the inability of these states to do the needful
agreed that militancy has messed things up but what happened from 60s to 90s?? I mean it was not as if onne was at full blast this period

Yes, that is while Govt created Onne, Warri, Calabar and Koko.

Govt cannot force importers to use a particular port. The onus lies on the importers themselves. If the Igbos are truly the power house in importation, they can muster their strength to direct ships to onne.

Perhaps, this has shown that their importation is inconsequential to the economy of Nigeria, except proven otherwise.
not interested in your trying to tribalize this thread by always mentioning Igbo or se when the port in question is in ss..whether their importation is inconsequential is immaterial in this discussion after all not all port activities in apapa or tincan is done by swsterners..focus on issues of how lift the obvious burden Lagos ports is carrying for the nation

Government has really tried to make this a viable port in the south east region but the commerce just isn't there. It's useful for the oil and gas industry and maybe it will pickup if investors build refineries in that region.
How much more can they waste before investing in more profitable regions...

"Nigeria has invested heavily in the development of Onne Port, upgrading both the Federal Lighter Terminal and the Federal Ocean Terminal and continues to improve quayside facilities, communication links and other services. At the same time the Private Sector has been heavily investing in the Free Zone. Over $300 million has been invested to-date."

We are not speaking about SE and SS accessibility, most of the trade and commerce in Nigeria is focused towards Lagos and lets not forget that fact.

Onne has it's uses, but it can not function outside other corrections being made.
my question is this.was this so in the 60s? Yes most of trade in Nigeria is focused towards Lagos but has it been always so?people are complaining Lagos is conjested(with dangote refinery and lekki port coming up it would only get worse) but have fg sat down to see how it can lift the burden of the country put on Lagos?
PoliticsRe: Onne Sea Port by asha80(m): 3:39pm On Jan 18, 2016
sweetgala:
It is not politics and the government beyond creating a favourable environment, by making clearing charges and conditions more attractive in onne can not force private owned vessels to dock at oone if Lagos remains favourable.

There are several reasons and I'll expand on them

1- Reliability and history

For many years this vessels which trade and call at the Nigerian port have docked in Lagos, the captain understand the area from a seafaring perspective. They've always gone to Lagos and have a planned route which may involve visiting multiple ports along West Africa. Ships are not planes they take weeks to cross the ocean. There is no reaon a ship can not dock at onne and then process to Lagos

2 - Safety

PH is the Capital of kidnapping in Nigeria, it is also in proximity to the MEND and ND vandalism and piracy. Why would a ship ladden with goods worth millions of dollars go near such a port, some of these foreign owned and registered ships are not even insured to go near onne.

It is up to the PH SG and governors forum of that GP zone to resolve the security issues for their own benefit. You can't blame a bunch of Yoruba people in Lagos for the actions of PH and ND citiEnrry and it's effect.

3 - Demand

Lagos remains the centre of commerce and trade on Nigeria, and it is used and accessed by all Nigerians, some 50% of imported consumer goods on those ships belong to people from SE, these same people can bring the goods through onne but they'd rather land their goods safely in Lagos ths risk it being hijacked in PH.

Lagos is more central and accessible to.other parts of Nigeria than PH , if the second Niger bridge is built this may equalise things a little.

Govenemt can not force the concept of demand to change, it can only alter it's supply of said demand to encourage individuals to use alternatives

There are other reasons but those are simple immediate ones
actually se,most parts of ss,up to half of middle belt and whole of ne is nearer ph than Lagos...also nothing 'central' about lagos

Companies Call on Govt to Fix Industrial Layout Road

Posted by The Leader News Online on Friday, December 11, 2015 · Leave a Comment

Companies operating in the Onitsha Road Industrial Layout Owerri, have sent an SOS to the Owelle Rochas Okorocha-led government to take urgent steps to rehabilitate the road leading into Industrial Estate, now that the dry season has started. This passionate appeal was made recently by chief executives of the firms at an indoor meeting with youths of Irete, the host community of the industrial layout.
They called on the state government to fix the road, which for many years has remained impassable during the rains. According to them, doing so will enable owners of plots there to move in to develop them. At the same time, firms already in production there will receive more patronage, boost in production and offer job opportunities to our teeming unemployed youths. This they argued, will add impetus to the Okorocha’s second tenure mantra of job, job, job, employment, employment, employment.
The chief executives stated that the road has deteriorated to the extent that during the rains, both the owners and their customers, hardly have access to their respective factories due to the flooding and swampy nature of the estate.
They disclosed that though the road can be accessed by both motorists and pedestrians now because dry season has returned, it is usually an eyesore throughout the rains.
It would be recalled that the first civilian Governor of old Imo State, Chief Sam Mbakwe established the Industrial Estate, providing it with such facilities as security, power and a few roads but it has suffered utter neglect by all his successors starting with the military regimes.
Chief Godwin Mbonu Ihenacho, Managing Director of Gmicord Aluminum Factory Limited told newsmen that as an Industrial Layout, the place should be put in order with basic amenities to facilitate daily transactions. He said that bad roads cannot attract customers but rather scare them.
In the same vein, the Managing Director of Sky Aluminiumn and Coating Industries Limited, Mr. Onuoha Basil, who took newsmen to his factory, disclosed that his industry is capable of employing more than 300 unemployed youths but not when there is no access road to it.
The Managing Director of Cono Star Plastics Limited, Chief Uchay Ohanenye who expressed his enthusiasm to boost Governor Okorocha government’s policy of industrializing Imo State, regretted that the unmotorable road leading to the Industrial Layout has halted activities in some of the companies, some of which have the capacity to employ over 100 youths.
He argued that the best way to generate revenue for the state government was by promoting industries by creating the enabling environment for them to operate. Chief Ohanenye emphasized that the bad road has for so many years posed an impediment to this.
On their part, the youths of the Industrial Layout host community, have commended the industrialists for their role in boosting the economic development of Imo State through their industries. They advised them to have a unity of purpose so as to pursue the rehabilitation of the road by the state government with vigour but ensure that solid drainage system capable of forestalling flood are used in the construction work.

LAGOS JANUARY 17TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Attacks on oil installations in Delta State entered the third day, yesterday, as militants blew-up major crude oil and gas pipelines to the Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, Tank Farm in Warri South West Local Government Area of the state.
Blown up on Friday night was the main crude line from Makaraba through Otunana and Abiteye to Escravos while Olero to Escravos gas line was attacked in the early hours of yesterday.
Earlier on Thursday, the Escravos – Warri – Abuja – Lagos pipelines came under attack. The Itsekiri raised the alarm, yesterday, that the attacks could metamorphose into another Ijaw-Itsekiri war.
These acts of sabotage are coming at a time when global crude oil price continues its downward move.
THE military, yesterday, deployed army and naval personnel in the creeks of Delta State to contain the militants.
Our source, who spoke from one of the Ijaw communities in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area, at about 5.30 pm said, “The situation is not clear yet, but there are gunboats everywhere. It is a combined team of soldiers and navy people patrolling the creeks.
“Movement is restricted. The military personnel are going about to show their presence and scare the militants, who strike in the night and not in the daytime. But, at least, their presence has shown that the military was ready to confront them.”
The authorities, caught napping by the resumption of hostilities four days ago, reportedly saw the danger of allowing further bombings and mobilised to counter the militants.
After bombing the Escravos-Warri-Abuja-Lagos pipelines at about 10.00 pm on Thursday, the militants were emboldened to blow up Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL’s Utunana –Makaraba crude oil line at 10.30 pm on Friday and proceeded to bomb Olero gas line in the early hours of yesterday.
Their target it is believed is to cripple crude oil production and arm-twist the Federal Government. Already, CNL, heavily hit by the Thursday and Friday attacks, was considering shutting down operations, even as workers have been restricted to their camps in the affected locations.
