I guess people like Effiong who stayed behind did not value their own lives. They could have been rounded up and shot yet they didn't run away like Ojukwu.
Effiong and the rest who stayed back were never in trouble. Ojukwu was the main culprit Nigeria who Nigeria wanted his head.

Modsenemy:
Are u kidding ?
He led over three million people to their death when he had the chance to back out and you are saying why will he be slaughtered for the same reason?

Hitler led his people to war , and when he lost, he didn't run into exile when he had to chance to hand over to his power hungry junior, he killed himself for the course .

Mussolini led his people to war, and when he was initially arrested and overthrown, he broke out of jail and went back to war instead of running into exile .

Ojukwu was losing the war, he handed over a Biafra he dreamt of to Effiong and fled .
Listen, fact 1: Most Igbos are not bitter at Ojukwu for leading them in a war of freedom despite all we lost. If it isnt paining us he led, why is it paining you people he did not lead?

Second fact: what Hittler and Mussolini were fighting for was a direct opposite of what Ojukwu fought for. While Ojukwu was fighting to liberate his people from Nigeria, Hittler and Mussolini were fighting to subjugate other people. Ojukwu fought for freedom, Hittler fought to enslave.

After 3 years, when it was no longer possible to continue, Ojukwu left the scene which ushered in peace. The only thing that would have been achieved by Ojukwu staying back to be killed would have been to give Nigeria sweet victory. By leaving, Ojukwu denied Nigeria that victory and lived to a ripe old age. On his death, he recieved the greatest funeral ever witnessed in Nigeria.

Ojukwu had the last laugh

This guy was a coward per excellence
He fought for our independence for 3 years against unbelivable odds. That alone means much more to Igbos than anyrhing else. Staying back to die at the end of the war is something that Nigerians wished on him, but not his people.

What would have been gained by Ojukwu staying back to be slaughtered when the war had virtually ended?

Yes this is the pure but sad truth. The north dictates and the rest of nigeria follow.. Imagine what would've have happened if buhari was igbo or yoruba and the president of nigeria but has been away from nigeria for two months on medical grounds. The north would've have raised such an uproar that would've led to buhari's impeachment. But what do we have here. They do as they wish and there is nothing the rest of us can do. And the truth is that the only opposition now against the north and their choke hold on nigeria is ipob. You may not admit it but its true. Look at how the north rejected restructuring and guess what, there is nothing we the south can do about it. These people are in charge abeg. They control nigeria.
Of course the core North controls Nigeria.Who doesnt know that. The only people doing anything about it are Igbos with their agitation

Unfortunately, most of the people killed were killed because they lived within enemy territories. But the real sad news about all these is that even if Biafra is carved out today, it will not still stop Igbos from living all over Nigeria and all over the world, including within enemy territories; it is a cultural thing for Igbos to travel far and wide, how would Biafra change that?
Maybe true but the only difference is that if Igbos have their own country and Government, where ever Igbos are massacred will have to answer to that government of Biafra, unlike the situation where Igbos will be massacred in Nigeria and it will be called "Nigerian domestic affair"
PoliticsRe: Reasons Why Biafra Is Bad News For Igbos by attackgat: 9:16am On Aug 04, 2017
Realchidi:
As a full blooded Igbo man, born and bred in the east, I make bold to claim that the current agitation for Biafra is ill-thought out and misdirected. Here are my reasons;
1. Igbo's are the real Nigerians: Igbo's are found absolutely everywhere in Nigeria from north to south. In these places, our people generally have good relationships with their hosts and are the bedrock of commercial activities. They have become very successful through hardwork and also the enabling conditions provided by their hosts. One should not abandon a project he is part and parcel of. It simply makes no sense. There are millions of Igbo's in Lagos who are Lagosians to the core and can't live anywhere else. That's how Nigerian we are. Seceding from Nigeria will be an economic disaster for Igbo's as they would loose billions invested all over Nigeria. Let nobody fool you, leaving Nigeria for Biafra means loosing your properties and businesses.
Isrealis are found in all corners of the Globe. They control big industries from America to Germany and even Nigeria.

Chinese are found all over the world, the control big businesses and construction from Asia to Europe to Nigeria

Indians are found all over the world, even my Doctor here in Enugu is an Indian.

Yet Isrealis have the state of Isreal, Chinese have the Peoples Republic of China and India has Republic of India.

Yet in your mind, Igbos cannot have Republic of Biafra because of the same investments others have?

What a shame

2. Igbo land lacks the infrastructure to support secession:
Secession is not achieved by mere speeches and rallies. What plans and structures are in place to support the second Biafra? At present, the south east lacks the basic infrastructure ranging from roads, housing, water supply, power etc to be self reliant. The five south east states are landlocked meaning our external trade will be at the prerogative of hostile neighbours. Food production is almost nonexistent in the south east save for Ebonyi state. One would have expected those agitating to first hold our governors and legislators in the east accountable for not developing Igbo land. Rather we have decided to shift all the blame to the centre forgetting that our sons and daughters are also part of the decision making at the centre!
Igbos once had Biafra and survived despite being blockaded from land, Sea and Air under war conditions. It is now you think Igbos cannot survive? Also, Igbo land is not 5 states. There are over 1 million Igbos carved into Benue (Umueze-Okoha people)

There are millions of ethnic Igbos in Delta state and Rivers state. Biafra was never about just Igbos only but even if it was, Igbos can trade with world using Onitsha River port or the proposed ports at Oguta in Imo or the Obuaku Sea port in Abia which I heard is even closer to the Ocean than Portharcourt.

The common man cannot hold political office holders to account, the Nigerian system does not permit that. How can you hold a Governor with powers of immunity accountable? How can you hold a Local Govt chaiman with all the security apparatus and money of his area accountable? There is no accountability in Nigeria and this is one of the reasons for Biafra, a state where people can be made accountable because the Nigerian system is no longer there.

3. Disunity and Political immaturity: In Nigerian politics, we have continually refused to get it right and that confusion will be amplified in Biafra. Politics is a game of compromises and building alliances. The Hausa's and Yoruba's know this and it has helped them in holding on to power. Tinubu abandoned his personal ambitions for the greater good of his people by allowing Osinbajo to be vice president today. We Igbo's have no sense of sacrifice as its always about self. While that individualistic thinking may help in business, it is useless in politics. Our people generally show apathy to activities related to national politics as exhibited during the last census and even during voters registration. This immaturity while rear its ugly head in Biafra where different south east states will be locked in clannish bickering. We were once given the slot for Senate president and we ensured it went round the five states! Ipob calling for a boycott of the Anambra elections is another example of political immaturity.
If unity is is a criteria for self determination then Nigeria should not be because Nigerians are one of the most disunited people on earth. Personally, I dont see why Igbos should be jostling with Hausas and Yorubas for political position in Nigeria when they can have their own country and stop the jostling. Did Lugard bring us together to be fighting for positions?

4. Secession in Africa means war:
There is no such thing as peaceful secession in Africa. Africans are yet to attain that level of having major disagreements without blood letting. South Sudan is a good example. The current agitation for Biafra will lead to war for two major readons. One is the continuous inclusion of Niger delta states in the Biafra project. This a very dangerous move. The second is the loss of properties. Anyone thinking that Biafra will be achieved peacefully is in dreamland. And war will spell disaster for Igbo's as we can't match the might of the Nigerian Armed forces. At least not now. Those calling for a referendum should know that the government of the day will never let that happen.
Only people with backward mentality keep saying that secession is not possible in Africa without war. The days of war are over. Eventually, with the right kind of pressure, Nigeria will grant referendum. It should be noted that this is no longer an Igbo affair. The call to secede from Nigeria is now being called in the SW, SS and even parts of the North. The people you are calling 'Niger Delta' are even more tired of Nigeria than Igbos.

As for saying that the great Igbo nation is no match for the Nigerian Army, ask your self this. Could the Nigerian military might defeat the Niger Delta militants? Could it defeat Boko Haram? But when it comes to a 40 million strong Igbo nation, you are sure that the Nigeria Army will perform magic? I laugh in Igbo

The way forward for we Igbo's is to look inwards and examine ourselves first. Injustice abounds in Nigeria and anyone denying it is a liar. However, Igbo's should learn on how to fight for their rights within the Nigerian state and not seeking to leave at the slightest provocation. The people of the Niger delta agitated more control of their resources in militant fashion but never talked of seccesion. Moreover the masses face the same challenges whether in the north or east. Secession is not the solution. No amount of name calling will change these facts. Let's be bold and fight for our rights in Nigeria, the giant of Africa.
They way foward is for everyone to recognise that it is the inalinable right of the Igbo nation to decide for its self if it wants to be part of the British colonial experiment called Nigeria. The Igbo nation has already lost millions of souls simply for being of the colonial contraption called Nigeria and I dont see whatever benefit Nigeria can ever be to equal what we have lost. I enjoin Nigeria to choose referendum over war. Lugard made us all Nigerians, we should not be killing our selves over the legacy of the white man, it makes us look foolish.

Let a referendum be held in the SS/SE and the lower Benue allowing all to vote. Those who love Nigeria can continue while those who want to go should go.

Only a fool hopes for peace and happiness while holding people against their will.

Laughable. If people stayed back home out of fear of violence then it is fear of the Nigerian security forces. All the violence, shootings and killings has been Nigeria that did them. IPOB is not violent and is yet to touch anyone. The people know who is the violent side in this agitation. Everywhere Kanu goes, mammoth crowds come to welcome him. Its not difficut to see who the people support.

As for saying the dream is 'unrealisable', the same was said of Zik, Awolowo and co when they began their own agitation for independence.

It is impossible to hold anyone or any people against their will forever.

Really Osibanjo? So self deternination, sovereignty and the will of the ethnic nationalities dont mean anything? What means everything is the mere 1914 colonial arrangement called Nigeria? Shameful

The acting president continued: “I want to advise that we must not repeat the errors of the past. I must also commend the Institute of Security Studies for providing this important platform for reflection on the subject of the corporate existence of Nigeria in its diversity
Then agree that referenfum is a peaceful and democratic way of resolving dispute.
.

Also speaking at the event, former head of state, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, warned that no nation has ever survived multiple civil wars.

Gowon who was chairman of the occasion appealed to youths to refuse to be canon-fodders, just as he warned against hiding under the cover of freedom of expression to promote divisive positions.

[quote]He said, “These calls for division are not good for our democracy. What the DSS has done with this seminar is to demonstrate that the state security is primarily about the relentless pursuit of the good of society and its people, not guns and daggers as oftentimes perceived.
Gowon, Chief unity begger of Nigeria

All Nigerians should love their country”
Yes, those who consider themselves "Nigerians"

On his part, the director general of the DSS, Lawal Daura, vowed to deal with individuals and groups that threaten the inviolability and sanctity of the Nigerian state.
Sanctity of Nigeria? Which sanctity? The one we all agreed to or the one Lugard and his wife agreed to?

He said the unity of the nation is a “sacred trust” that links security with governance.
I laugh in Igbo, a colonial fraud is now a sacred trust lol

While recognising efforts by some well-meaning individuals to maintain peace, the DG said the Service is worried by the “toxicity” of ethnic agitations.

His words: “In recent times, centrifugal forces have been at work in our great nation, trying their utmost to pull us apart. They have vainly leveraged on our ethnic, geographical and religious cleavages- the key factors that constitute our very rich tapestry of cultural treasure and diversity- to ignite hate speeches and stoke ethnic cum religious tensions nationwide.

“Sundry youth groups and individuals, with diverse subversive agendas have latched unto this latest manifestation of ethno-religious divisions to afflict the national stage and consciousness with their atavistic and retrogressive utterances as well as infantile threats.

“Undoubtedly, these utterances and threats have spawned, in their wake, considerable anxiety among law-abiding, ordinary citizens residing in different parts of the country”.

Kanu is Nigeria's numero uno enemy of the state. He is not a Nigerian. Since his madness started, we have been hearing of seccesaion, secession, zoo and animals. The current restructuring cries, I give him tht credit for that was as a result of his secession craziness but he is full of hate, bile and disrespect.

Why would he come to Lagos and kaduna?
Has he got a Nigerian passport? Has he been cleared by the immigration? What would he be coming to do?

He should be happy to have prolonged his life a bit for now because of that decision.

Even if he decides to visit Christian n dominated southern kaduna, don't you flat heads know that Dan Fulani wouldn't be the only fulani hosts waiting to welcome him?

How far is his kaduna destination away from those boko boys?
Don't you know that it would've been a perfect opportunity for a 15 year old boko boy to harvest lots of souls of kaduna christians plus the man who insults them everyday.

The biggest loser here is not even Kanu. It's the Fulani herdsmen who would've sent 'diginitaries' to meet him and also boko boys who would have used this perfect opportunity to scatter bodies.

Kanu's scattered body parts would've fetched 72 hot beauties.
Hypocrite! You are looking for ONE NIGERIA but you want to tell Kanu what brand of ONE NIGERIA you want from him before he can go where he wants? It doesnt work like that.

If you dont like the language Kanu uses, support his cause so he can go his way. Kanu is within his riggt to say whatever he wants, call Nigeria whatever he wishes and insult whom ever he feels like. If you dont like it, change chapter 4 of the Nigerian constitution which gives him freedom of speech, expression and movement.

That is the price of ONE NIGERIA, accomodating everybody wether you like it or not.

The good thing is that Kanu wants to go his way with his people. So support him to go and then he can go. But as long as you Nigerians insist on ONE NIGERIA, you have to take the heat that comes with it
