Car Talk3 Reasons Why Drivers Of Manual Transmission Cars Believe They're Better Drivers by AutoJoshNIG(op): 4:09pm On Mar 02, 2018
Who said driving a machine like car is easy?

Be it manual or automatic, you need to master the craft. There are people who can drive the automatic transmission but can’t drive the manual transmission. On the other hand, there are people who are used to manual and can’t easily drive an automatic transmission.

A lot of people have their taste when it comes to transmission type; different strokes for different folks. Be it manual or automatic, learning how to drive isn’t an easy task. It’s not a ‘one-day’ process. It requires time, energy, money consistency etc.

We would often hear and see people argue that manual drivers are better drivers than the automatic drivers. Reaching a conclusion can be a tricky one because manual cars and automatic cars have their pros and cons.

Are manual drivers better drivers than the automatic drivers? You’ll have to decide at the end of this post. Here are some reasons why many people think manual drivers are better drivers.

1. Better Handling:
A manual driver is more calculative than the automatic driver. He’s more aware of how best to handle a car. He has a better understanding of car dynamics, braking and acceleration. He knows how best to manipulate the gear and how to perform a good clutch engagement. He’s more careful to drive well

2. Pays Better Attention/cautious drivers:
Who pays better attention other than a manual driver? Even though automatic drivers pay attention, it’s not as much as manual drivers. The manual driver is very sensitive and easily take notice of things going on . They have superb mental alertness.

3. Manual drivers are good learners:
The manual drivers have stronger connection with their car. Manual drivers are never bored of driving; they are enthusiastic about driving and better driving tips. They keep learning to keep afloat. They keep learning to make better gear transitions etc.

The above are their major reasons why they think manual drivers are better than automatic drivers.

Between manual and automatic drivers, who do you think are better drivers?

It’s best you answer it yourself.

TravelThe Benin-Ore Road: Before & After Photos by AutoJoshNIG(op): 11:56am On Mar 01, 2018
The Benin-Ore expressway is one of Nigeria’s most traveled roads. Daily, hundreds of thousands of Nigerians ply this economically crucial highway.

This highway primarily connects states of the South-West to states in the South-South, South-East and the Middle belt.

For decades, this stretch of road that is part of the Lagos-Benin Expressway was notorious for its atrocious condition and the neglect by successive Governments.

In 2007, on account of the disgraceful condition of this Federal road, a one-time Minister of Transportation famously wept during a visit to a failed section of the road. The Minister also apologized to Nigerians for what she then described as the “inhuman and unacceptable” state of the road.

Thankfully, intervention eventually surfaced.

In 2014, the reconstruction of the Benin-Ore section of the Lagos-Benin Expressway was completed.

See the before and after photos of the Benin-Ore Expressway below.

Car TalkMOT Certificate: There Was Never A Plan By The Authorities To Test Vehicles by AutoJoshNIG(op): 9:14am On Mar 01, 2018
The MOT test - or Ministry of Transport test - is an annual test carried out on vehicles to verify if a vehicle is safe, road-worthy and does not pose a threat to the environment.

This test is especially mandatory for cars older than 3 years from purchase date ( that is, for vehicles that were bought brand new).

Read more about the MOT in our previous post.

However, we noticed something of a concern.

Without physically examining their vehicles, vehicle owners in Nigeria are issued with MOT certificates. The MOT certificate is an endorsement by the issuing authority that the vehicle that it was issued to is safe, roadworthy and does not pose a threat to the environment.

The Vehicle Inspection Office Driver and Vehicle Licensing Administration (VIO-DVLA) - a Directorate under the Ministry of Transportation - is the institution with the statutory responsibility to examine cars and issue MOT certificates to deserving vehicle owners.

However, the process involved in obtaining an MOT certificates in Nigeria - as highlighted on their website - does not include physical examination of vehicles. In other words, no matter how scrappy and “unroad-worthy” a vehicle is, the VIO-DVLA can still issue it with a road-worthy certificate.

See the process involved in obtaining an MOT certificate on their website:

http://www.viodvla.com/help/index.php?how-to=How-to-get-your-vehicle-MOT

How then are vehicles given a clean bill of health when they were not subjected to any test?

Or could the MOT certification designed as only a revenue generating scheme for the government?

Is this not a systemic fraud by the MOT certificate issuing authorities?

Or what do you think?

The new PEUGEOT eM02 FS Powertube (e=electric M=Mountain, 02=mid range, FS=Full Suspension) features a new frame with a built-in battery.

Designed for endurance and cross, this new mountain bike will be unveiled alongside the PEUGEOT RIFTER 4X4 CONCEPT on 6 March in Geneva. TravelLagosians, See How Much Time You Spend In Traffic In A Single Year! by AutoJoshNIG(op):
I think some of us who live in Lagos state ought to change our postal addresses to read thus:

Omololu Njideka Ahmed
Lagos Traffic,
Lagos, Nigeria.

This might appear like an attempt at humour, but the reality upon us is that a great part of our lives spent living in Lagos is actually spent in traffic.

Indeed, millions of Lagosians spend more time in traffic than in their homes or workplaces!

Once-upon-a-time, yours truly departed Lekki Phase 1 for home. The time of departure was 4 pm. I got home, somewhere on the Mainland, sometime in the region of midnight. Note, that is just about the amount of time it takes to drive from Lagos to Accra, Ghana.

That is how brutal the legendary Lagos traffic could be.

Without realizing it, millions of Lagosians spend several months in a single year in traffic. That is, when hours are converted to days and months. And by this, I am not talking about Lagosians who eke a living in Lagos as commercial vehicle drivers.

Well, let me not bore you with tales. Let’s get down to do the maths. Perhaps that would illustrate how much of our lives we waste in Lagos traffic.

The Maths:

Now, let say that – on every weekday – you spend, say, 3 hours commuting in Lagos traffic, that means you spend 60 hours monthly (3hours x 5days x 4weeks) = 60hours.

60 hours converted to days is 2.5 days.

Multiply that by 12 months, what you get is 30 days.

Simply, if you spend 3 hours on weekdays commuting in Lagos, 30 days in a single year is what you spend in traffic.

So, if you spend more hours in Lagos traffic (going and returning from work), see below how many days or months in a year you spend in traffic below.

4 hours = 40 days

5 hours = 50 days.

6 hours = 60 days (2 months)

Note: (Anyone that spends more time beyond this point in traffic have absolutely no business not being a yellow cab, Uber or Taxify driver)

7 hours = 70 days.

8 hours = 80 days

9 hours = 90 days (3 months)

10 hours = 100 days

Surely, there is no way living this way cannot impact negatively on the Life Expectancy of a people.

So, how much time do you spend in traffic in a year?

Car TalkAll New Nissan Terra Unveiled As A Frame SUV (photos) by AutoJoshNIG(op): 12:57pm On Feb 27, 2018
Nissan, the Japanese automaker, will be making the public release of the new Nissan Terra. This event will take place sometime in April in China.

Car TalkHow Much Does It Actually Cost To Get A Drivers License In Nigeria? by AutoJoshNIG(op): 11:17am On Feb 27, 2018
How much does it actually cost to get a Driver’s license in Nigeria?

This is one question that you never get a single answer to.

Different answers are offered by different individuals. The amounts expressed are often between N18, 000 to N28, 0000. Or sometimes, even more.

Yet, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) - the agency saddled with the responsibility of issuing driver’s license in Nigeria - maintains that it cost N6, 300 to obtain a fresh one.

To many Nigerians, the reality of a N6, 300 fee for a driver’s license only exist in the imagination of the FRSC.

In fairness, some Nigerians admitted that the FRSC account might actually be the case. These set of Nigerians agree that N6, 300 is the actual amount paid to procure a driver’s license.

However, according to them, taxes and other charges, like bank commissions, etc., often add up to increase the amount spent by applicants to be in the region of N10, 200.

Then there is the extremely complicated and tedious process of obtaining the driver’s license.

It is the very cumbersome process of obtaining the license that often inspire applicants to outsource the procurement process to intermediaries or touts. These intermediaries and touts are the ones who often drive up the entire cost of procuring the license to as much as N25, 000 to N28, 0000.

Over the years, and despite the outcries about how strenuous the driver’s license procurement process is, only lip service – by the issuing authorities -  has been paid to simplify the process or to make it less cumbersome.

For instance, what is the rationale for waiting for 90 days - 180 days before a driver’s license is issued to applicants?

Why does it have to take that long to obtain a tacky and basic card that does not have a microchip embedded on it like ATM cards and SIM Cards?

Also, why is it necessary for an applicant to sacrifice a whole day for “capturing”?

Or is it that there are individuals who are enormously benefiting from the tedious process of obtaining a driver’s license in Nigeria.

Are the bottlenecks experience during the process of obtaining a driver’s license in Nigeria deliberate?

Perhaps, these bottlenecks were deliberately instituted with the intention of frustrating applicants to the point where they would gladly pay extra to middlemen in order to procure licenses.  And of course, these middlemen are believed to be proxies of staff of the issuing authority.

Clearly, this is one sector where the government needs to focus its anti-corruption crusade on.

Tell us how much you paid for your drivers license in the comment section below.

Car TalkConfirmed: Rolls-royce Cullinan SUV Is Coming With Suicide Doors (photos) by AutoJoshNIG(op): 10:39am On Feb 27, 2018
Back in the 17th and 18th century, people knew that the simplest and most comfortable way to get into or out of a moving object, such as a horse carriage, was with the help of a rear-hinged door.

Its why cars adopted this concept early on in the 20th century, and also why the reborn Rolls-Royce has stuck with it in an attempt to exude luxury, exclusivity and comfort. The British luxury car brand was actually the one that re-introduced suicide doors to the luxury segment back in 2003 with the Phantom.

With that in mind, we’re happy to bring you the first-ever images of the upcoming Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV with its suicide doors cracked open. Also, given the height of the car, this rear-hinge setup might turn the Cullinan into the easiest vehicle to get in and out of as far as rear seat passengers are concerned, though there is a B-pillar, most likely in the name of structural rigidity.

Power will, most likely, come from the very same V12 twin turbo found in the Phantom.

Car TalkPay Attention To Your Car Radiator. How To Maintain The Radiator Properly by AutoJoshNIG(op): 6:23am On Feb 27, 2018
That very day you purchased your car, it came with a responsibility. This responsibility is taking good care of your car so that it can serve you well.

You don’t have to wait for your car to totally spoil before you repair them. There are a lot of preventive maintenance practices you can take up. This will not only keep your car in good shape, it will as well save you some cash; maintenance cost is reduced.

A lot of people are more conversant with changing the oil, rotating the tyres, and replenishing fluids. There are more to maintenance like taking good care of the radiator. A lot of people don’t know much about radiator upkeep.

This post is to help you take proper care of your car radiator so it would last long and serve its purpose. There are steps you can take to help maintain a properly functioning radiator.

Having the knowledge of what you’re about to read now about radiator can help you save time, money and strength some time in the future.

Before we precede, what of the work of this radiator?
Radiator is a very key component of your car engine cooling system. This system in a whole keeps your engine from overheating. This process prevents internal components from melding together, melting, and above all, causing your car from malfunctioning.

We can say the cooling system of your car engine is very vital because failure to do its work, there might be engine failure. The radiators crucial role within the cooling system is regulating the temperature of the engine. It keeps the car from overheating amongst others.

What can you do to keep your radiator up and running in good shape?

Consider doing these; master these tips:

- Keep the coolant, or radiator fluid, filled at all times. You can as well use this coolant with a 50/50 water mix.
- Always ensure the radiator cap is tight at all time. If it’s not tight, the coolant chamber will not be pressurized as supposed.
- Have your radiator flushed once or twice each year. The frequency of this flushing varies with vehicle. For some cars, annual flushing is okay.

Flushing your radiator gets rid of particle buildup in it and it as well prevents clogging.

When you don’t flush your radiator as recommended, your radiator will start degrading and wearing down the cooling system. This will prevent it from functioning properly.

In a nutshell, don’t neglect the radiator upkeep of your car. It should be among your priorities in your car maintenance.

Car Talk5 Things You Shouldn’t Do When Driving A Manual Transmission Car by AutoJoshNIG(op): 6:12am On Feb 27, 2018
As it stands now and with the current trend in car technology, majority of drivers will give you 1001 reasons why automatic cars are better than manual cars. However, there are different strokes for different folks; some petrol heads still stick to the good old manual transmission. They just want to be in control. I’m one of them.

You may have been unintentionally messing up your transmission with the way you handle it. Be it as it may, I’m here to help you in my own little way.

Relax, read, assimilate and put it to practice.

Here are 5 things you shouldn’t do if you drive manual transmission.

1. Do not leave your car in gear when you have no intention to move:

You might be wondering why on earth you shouldn’t do this. It is very simple.

It is bad to do so because when you leave it engaged in a gear, your clutch will suffer from unnecessary wear and tear.

When the clutch is depressed, three main parts of the clutch press against the other – the spring, the bearing, and the diaphragm. This will gradually wear out.

So, next time you’re warming your car, at the stop light, have no intention of moving ASAP when the engine is cranked, just move the gear lever to the Neutral position in order not to overwork or stress your clutch.

2. Do not rest you hand on the gear lever:

All those times you have been forming gangster, cruising your car with one arm on the steering and the other comfortably resting on the lever, you have been getting it all wrong.

This one is particularly a bit surprising, but it is true. It is bad.

The weight of your arm can actually cause the parts responsible for gear shifting to rub against each other. This wears out your selector fork (transaxle shift forks). This on the long run might make your car start jumping out of gear.

Do your gear shift a favour and take back your hand back to the steering wheel. It is also a good driving habit to leave both hands on the wheel for proper control.

3. Do not floor you throttle/gas pedal when your engine is at low RPM:

Behind the scene, a lot is happening in a manual transmission. Flooring your throttle at a low RPM is unhealthy to the engine. By so doing, you tell the engine to accelerate as hard as it can. This brings much stress to the engine; it makes the engine work really hard.

Instead of flooring the throttle at a very low RPM, just downshift – move to a lower gear.

4. Do not use the clutch to hold your car on a hill:

I have heard many people call this ‘clutch engagement’. I don’t know how it came to be anyway.

This is the habit of using the clutch and throttle simultaneously so it could act as brake to avoid rolling back when in a hilly terrain.

When you do this, you are actually burning out the friction material on your clutch disk. Avoid this.

Use the conventional break and the handbrake (E-brake) in worst case scenarios.

5. Do not rest your foot on the clutch:

This makes your clutch not to be fully engaged. It causes wearing out of the clutch. It might also cause you car not to put down full engine power. It is called riding-the-clutch.

Any lover of manual transmission in the house? Don’t forget to tell us a thing or two in the comment section.

Also like, rate and share.

Good luck and shift safely!

Car Talk5 Annoying Things Nigerian Drivers Do With Their Car Horn by AutoJoshNIG(op): 6:45am On Feb 07, 2018
The essence of a car horn is to warn others your vehicle is approaching and to call people's attention to potential hazards. But it seems some drivers don't understand this as they tend to use the horn of their cars for practically any and everything. You "pah-pah" your horn to greet your neighbours when going out...  You "pah-pah-pah" when you want to buy Gala on the road... and the cycle goes on and on.

Statistically, honking is an aggressive act and should be avoided except absolutely necessary.

So if you've been using the horn of your car to do the following, now is the time to stop:

To greet
The horn is a warning and not a greeting device but some of us use it to greet all our neighbours when leaving for work and when heading back home. Imaging greeting and warning people at the same time. It's time to stop all the confusion. You remember that friend that came to visit you over the weekend, you waved them goodbye and they honked back at you instead of waving back.. lol

To vent their anger
This is the number 1 reason people use their horn in Nigeria. Everyone is vexing. Vexing because of traffic, vexing at the government, vexing at their last mess up. So they vent that anger on everyone on the road with that deafening horn. Just try to slow down for pedestrians at a zebra crossing and some drivers will attack you with the wrath of their horn from behind. Patience usually solves the problems better than the horn.

Just to play
Some drivers just honk along with the music from the radio. Some just keep tapping the horn continuously all the way to their destination especially the bike (Okada) riders. Before we know it now, government will just pass a law to be arresting drivers for honking their horn.

To call people especially the security guard when going out
There is a way some drivers have mastered the horn of their car, they even know how to use it to pronounce different names especially the names of their domestic staff. They can even form sentences like "Akpos, hurry up". In some countries, it is illegal to honk the horn of a stationary vehicle.

Honking at pedestrians or bikers
It is unfair when you intimidate pedestrians, bicycle riders and bike riders with the horn of your car. This is illegal in several countries that have laws protecting its citizens. Some drivers will blow their horn at pedestrians from behind for them to walk fast because they want to park their car on the shoulder of the road. Out of reflex, the pedestrian can even jump into the gutter or the biker can fall off the bike.

Let's learn to share the road with others.

Don't forget to like, rate, share and tell us the most absurd thing you've seen someone do with the horn of their car.

Car TalkWould You Buy This Joystick & Butt-Shaped Car? (Photos) by AutoJoshNIG(op): 10:47am On Dec 01, 2017
Steve Paige came up with a strange car-design idea in 1969; while other automakers were adopting market-focused car designs, he opted for a controversial design; his only intention was to design an ‘art car,’ but he came up with a car shaped like a penis. His design set tongue wagging and it is still generating a lot of controversy more than 40 years after he had retired this outrageously-designed car.

Irrespective of which angle you view the car from, you know what it looks like. It also has space for two passengers, but does not look like the best ride on a bumpy road.

Steve Paige, the designer, drove this car on the streets of Los Angeles for up to five years before he deemed the car fit for retirement; this was after the car had covered up to 805 km (500 miles).

Can you buy this car?

Car TalkNissan To Recall Over 17,000 Units Of Infiniti QX30 by AutoJoshNIG(op): 3:18am On Dec 01, 2017
Infiniti envisaged a possible airbag problem in its QX30, and this is prompting the company to recall certain units of this automobile. There is fear that the airbags may deploy at random, even without any external force prompting such deployment, which can inflict injury on the driver and also increase the risk of an auto crash.

The company made a call for a recall despite the fact that no incident of a random deployment in the airbag has been reported yet.

While describing the defect, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), wrote that “The combination of an electrostatic discharge to a broken steering column-module clock spring, and an insufficient grounding to the steering column, might lead to an inadvertent deployment of the airbag.

Up to 17,507 units of the Infiniti QX30 will be affected by the recall; the affected automobiles are those manufactured between August 10, 2015, and June 16, 2017. The owners of these automobiles will be contacted from December 18th by Nissan.
