This is conclusion of one of the journals: Conclusion The analysis of experimental data showed that the addition of the quarry dust improved the strength properties of concrete which was on par with that of conventional concrete. From above testing results, it is inferred that the quarry dust may be used as an effective replacement material for natural river sand. The increase of cement content in the mortar phase shows an increase in the strength. The fine quarry dust tends to increase the amount of superplasticizers needed for the quarry mixes in order to achieve the rheological properties. The 28 days compressive strength of 100% replacement of sand with quarry dust of mortar cube (CM 1:1) is 11.8% higher than the controlled cement mortar cube. The 56 days maximum Compressive strength for 100% replacement of sand with quarry dust of 400 kg/m3 at F/C=0.6 was 17.45% higher than the reference concrete. At 56 days the maximum split tensile strength 100% replacement of sand with quarry dust of 400 kg/m3 at F/C=0.6 was 15.25% higher than the reference concrete. The maximum modulus of elasticity at 100% replacement of sand with quarry dust of 300 kg/m3 at F/C=0.6 is 10.24% higher than the reference concrete. Let us talk about Fly Ash.
Fly ash is a bye product obtain from coal combustion, and it is a fine particle that can be used as an admixture in concrete and "NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR FINE AGGREGATE" it increases the strength of concrete when added rightly. You are right by saying that right class of fly ash must be used or else it will be of negative effect. Fly ash contains several chemical combinations but ultimately a good one for concrete admixture should not contain more than 20% carbon. I am sure you know we have several admixtures that can be added to concrete, for instance we have retardant which slows down the rate of concrete setting, we also have admixture for rapid hardening of concrete and so on and so forth.
Even our banana and plantain peels when converted to ash under controlled condition could be used an admixture.
Quarry Dust:
Quarry dust is a byproduct of granite crushing process at quarry site, at the quarry site rocks are blast by dynamite to break rocks into smaller conveyable size, and it is then transfer to crusher. In the process of crushing different sizes of granite will be produced, and the various sizes will be separated, in all this process the dust generated which is of considerable size like that of river sand or a bit finer is called stone dust or quarry dust. This quarry dust has been proven over and over by researchers, form reputable institutes and in our own little tiny way here on NL, that it produces a concrete higher in strength than concrete with river sand as the fine aggregate. Beyond strength it is proven to be a good replacement for river sand not only in strength but in all properties of concrete. |

Though you have to be really careful when you make purchases of flash ash. Its not just dust from quarry's, There is also a process in producing flash ash. You should really take consideration in the class of fly ash being used. If not well produced it might be hazardous both to human health(though Over a period of time) and also to concrete mixtures.
Fly ash can indeed be used for so many building applications like Soil Stabilization, As a replacement for cement in concrete mixtures(Be very careful though if the wrong class is used it can cause the precast mixture to loose its resistance to water and think of the many hazards u possibly can think of) even in damp proofing...(wait till you see my damp proofing solutions). If the Right class is used it increases the strength of concrete mixtures,block mixtures...and even improves the curing time.
If you want to build a house today much care and attention should be given to strength of materials used. one might have the proper Rebar construction for your beams,columns,roof slabs etc.... but with the wrong materials and mixtures, The story of a project might be like that of SOLOMON GRUNDI.
Aventures I am so loving the material used for your deck form work. Thats quality work and material prevents air spaces in your mixture good choice.

Or the owner just wanted to come back to tackle the expense of the floor? Thanks of taking the time to answer, I appreciate it. sir the savings here is not really significant but most people do it just to come back to it later. At times it is done to quickly use the money for German floor to raise the building up so that the Omo oniles will not cime and sell the land. The advantage here is that one can do it in bit later on we all know that fingers are not equal, in this case one can save a little money and floor one or two rooms at a time. Meanwhile u must do ur German floor at a time. |

Sir, we continue our work until when we got to roof level, we then filled the inside to the level of our fdn block and then we pour concrete to the level of the capping done previously. |

View of the capped area. Pix 4. More view of the capped Area. Let's discuss this with regards to it's advantages over German floor and how effective it is to prevent dampness. This house us now fully occupied, and no form of dampness whatsoever. We actually adopted this method based on the mentality of some of our clients; they prefer to see their house rising up rather than doing the german floor. |

@All this thread to me is a one-stop-shop for all in building industry. The issue of complaints and addressing it properly, I think should be part of this thread as you learn even faster from other peoples mistake. for instance in the case of maverick and Brabus, the lesson I picked in here as a builder is this
(1) Ready to make all necessary corrections before it boomerang.
(2) We builders should know that clients are not fools and their eyes are not are the back of their head they can see clearly even better than us and so we should pay more attention to detail and give our client value for their hard earn money.
(3) When you get discouraged on a Job and your seal to do the job enthusiastically is no more there, please drop the job ( there is a contract law that protects a contractor in that regards irrespective of contract agreement "Frustrated Contract"). I notice Brabus lost intrest in this Job when the client change the contract method from wholesome contract to direct labour. When your spirit is down no matter how good you are you cannot deliver.
I hope with this few point, I have convinced all that I can still go ahead with my contribution in this dispute btw maverick and brabus.
First of all it is wrong for client to claim Brabus did a job that he did not do (I am trying to believe Brabus here). If I start a job does not mean I am responsible for the entire job. But I have some observation that the client could laid his claims on (if his pictures truly depicts Brabus Job) 1. There was a column by the window that left its starter columns reinforcement and sat on the wall, it seems to me that column is critical and it is structurally wrong to have such. This fall within the Job Brabus claim he did/supervised by himself. Also Brabus claimed that he stopped the entire work at first floor slab level, then the omission of beams and corresponding supporting columns are part of his job. But the upper floor columns that is not in alignment and the poorly casted columns are definitely not his responsibility.
I rest my case. |

brabus: Could it be the wonder working "cellular raft" foundation? A lot of residential projects in Lekki can actual survive harsh soil condition using this method without pilling. Even worse terrain in Ori-Oke, Ogudu area (but definitely not Akoka o) survived using this foundation.
Patiently waiting for the unveiling of the new type of foundation.
Respect Oga! Uptill yesterday I am still working to comfirm the visibility of this method. I am to continue work on it this afternoon hope to complete it today. it is a combo of some foundation type not really new in the world but I am sure it is new to Nigeria somehow I hope I am right sha. It has been used in the Germany and Singapore for high rise building on a critical soil type. But their method is cost crazy, what we are doing is to modified the method to make it cheaper, and the most challenging aspect is to back it up with design a best practice. |

Oga Brabus you make a nice point, but I disagree with you that the structural engineers are the ones not up and doing. Most architectural designs that comes to us are nominal and common residential designs and so what do we do. In cases where we have challenging site soil condition some architect (the first contact of the client) often do not do enough to orientate clients. The reason is not far fetched, instead of organizing a meeting that will involve all the stakeholders (client, architect, structural engineer, soil engineer) most architect will not do this because they prefer to keep all other professionals hidden and then charged the client on behalf of all other professionals, thereafter the architect will come and claim that the client pay token so we should just manage 40k whereas he has collected like 120k on your behalf even after delivering the job he wont pay you up claiming that the client is owing him and that goes forever. Now tell me how do you expect such structural engineer to do a good job.
Structural engineer can not face any challenging design except (1) there is a superb architectural design that differs from everyday design and the client is also ready to pay the price (2) Also there is no major challenge when the site soil formation is firm or rocky. I wish to refer all of us to the video clip of the design and construction of Alburj hotel in Dubai (the Architect and the SE are young brilliant chaps in their mid 30's from Britain) The location and several features of the project poses an unprecedented challenges and they face it headlong and they were successful.
And many atimes the client will shout you down and tell you to do it the way baba biliki did their grandfather's house, as for me I do walk away from such project but some SE will concur. For instance I met a client recently unlike the baba biliki followership the man put me on my toes and we now have a brand new foundation type that can help reduce the depth of piling, reduced the number of piles up to 60% less ' more reliable foundation. Both myself and the client worked really hard and thank God we are done and we ll soon unfold the details. |

Structural engineers work their whole careers designing a non-breathtaking and normal structure but yet the everyday structures on which we all travel and in which we all live and work.
Unfortunately, when a new house is built or considered by a homeowner, designer, builder or developer; little thought is given to the loading or load resistance of the structural elements supporting the house.
The primary focus of majority homeowners, is always on the floor plan (at least I can say that with authority on this platform), landscaping, and finesse. So, the structural elements that supports the house always receives little or no structural engineering input.
I'm lucky to have worked with big engineering guys and I can say it with authority that structural engineering is fun if you can be attentive.
Take a look at this simple scenario of how we build here on Nairaland:
Mr A wanted a residential building. First, he start to look at the area he'll like to live. Next, he start thinking about the house itself. How big, how many rooms, and the shapes. He gave very little or no thought to the structural elements which supports the house. He called his designer and they came up with a fantastic house with interesting features like the helical spiral staircase, unsupported beams spanning over 6m, wraparound terrace on 1.5m cantilever and many more. The next thing, he came online to ask for quotation to build the modern edifice exactly as the 3D presentation. Got a builder and construction began.
At what point did he require structural engineers input? Point of construction (just as you came and ask how a staircase which is an integral part of the building will be constructed)? Or while the idea is still on paper? That's how we roll and what leads to 99.9% of structural failure we see today.
Now, let's look at the following variables:
A floor plan is a floor plan. But two parcel of land are never the same. One land may be sloped, or adjacent to a river, while the soils of the other may have low bearing capacities or have a high water table. What about bad weather during construction? The construction practices to be adopted on Site A and B always differs, so also the skills and technical requirements.
So my questions are, why aren't Structural Engineers more involved in our designs at the conception? Why are we more particular about the cost, the materials and the esthetics? Why aren't topics like the strength, stability and durability of structures, interpretation of building codes, calculation of stress, discussed until there's a major need?
Why aren't SE's more involved in our projects? olawale100: I noticed that the reinforcement for the pillars on the ground floor has 6Y12. Is it because the building is 3 floors. Will there be reduction in the number at higher floors? Thanks the reinforcement is 6y16 and not 6y12. we have all the 230 x 230 column are reinforced with 4Y20 and 300 x 300 columns have 6Y16 |
