OLAADEGBU: A young woman teacher with obvious liberal tendencies explains to her class of small children that she is an atheist. She asks her class if they are atheists too. Not really knowing what atheism is but wanting to be like their teacher, their hands shoot into the air. There is, however, one exception. A beautiful girl named Lucy has not gone along with the crowd. The teacher asks why she has decided to be different.

"Because I'm not an atheist."

"So,"

asks the teacher,

"what are you?"

"A Christian"

The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red. She asks Lucy why she thinks she is a Christian.

"Well, I was brought up knowing and loving Jesus. My mum is a Christian and, my dad is a Christian, I also accepted Christ as my personal Lord and Saviour and I know I'm a Christian."

The teacher is visibly angry now.

"That's no reason,"

she says loudly,

"What if your mum had been a mo-ron and, your dad had been a mo-ron. What would that make you then?"

After a pause, and a smile.

"Then,"

says Lucy,

"that would make me an atheist." cool
This just shows the girl's parents are morons. Teaching such falsities to a little girl.

Funny by the way.

Martian: I'll just give you the definitions of tyranny and you can decide for yourself whether human rights has any correlation with it.

tyr·an·nies
1. A government in which a single ruler is vested with absolute power.
2. The office, authority, or jurisdiction of an absolute ruler.
3. Absolute power, especially when exercised unjustly or cruelly: "I have sworn . . . eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man" (Thomas Jefferson).
4.
a. Use of absolute power.
b. A tyrannical act.
5. Extreme harshness or severity; rigor.

Tyranny violates human rights.
Just face it, you don't have a point and drawing any correlation between human rights and tyranny is just annoying and idiotic.
You want an example of a tyrant, check out the primitive jewish idea called yahweh that you worship.
Lol.... Said something like that. Ignored.

Avicenna: @Mr anony.
I made a direct reference to democracy. I said, ultimately, authority is derived from the people.
Unless the people are tyrant unto themselves, your point is invalid.

Okija_juju: PS3 Games are very expensive.. Abroad, most new games sell for a minimum of 50 dollars and can go as high as 100 dollars per disc..

What I do is buy a stack anytime I travel, play em, trade em and when I travel again, I take the really old ones and go do a trade at the shop where I bought them.. Saves me alot of stress and money..
No worries. I will be ordering by the truckloads soon.

Kay 17: Mr Anony has to also explain his assumption, that human rights is an award, and why awards have REAL value.

At least money's real value is what market/everyone says it is, not what a Central Bank says.
Thanks.
He said we are 'assuming' while he's also making same 'assumption'.

He says we are missing his point while he's also blatantly missing our point.

This argument cannot lead anywhere like this.

@Mr anony.
I made a direct reference to democracy. I said, ultimately, authority is derived from the people.
Unless the people are tyrant unto themselves, your point is invalid.

And please, do not ask me what is good or bad. If you don't know which actions are morally superior, then we have nothing to talk about.

We determine our rights. And it evolves.

I keep using 'we'. We, the people, the society, humanity.
Christianity EtcRe: Should There Be Interference In Other Cultures When Rights Are Involved? by Avicenna: 6:14pm On Aug 23, 2012
^Ultimately, authority is derived from the people. That's what makes democracy so attractive.
In my first post, I disagreed with interfering with other countries business unless egregious crimes is going on. If you disagreed with it, I sincerely do not want to know the kind of person you are.
I do not need a divine authority to determine when people need to be protected. In places like North korea, you think the citizens will like to be suffering if they knew better?
You ask who gave us the right to help suffering people of other countries? We did.

But, you prefer it in a form of religion. You must know, history have repeatedly shown that people make up gods and using the 'authority' derived from such gods, they determine morality/rights themselves. They DID.

But, humanity is too advanced for that nonsense in this age.

We have rights. We determine the rights we have. This rights allow us to progress as a species and live in relative happiness. We determined these rights.

Finally, there will be differences in morality due to the peculiar environments of each countries. What I'm saying is a accepted general principle on how we treat each other. Do you get this?

Religion/needless cultural sensitivity are a stumbling block to humanity's progress.
Christianity EtcRe: Should There Be Interference In Other Cultures When Rights Are Involved? by Avicenna: 2:50pm On Aug 23, 2012
wiegraf: Its a reasonable position, which I would personally subscribe to actually. So I suppose should a culture be deemed dangerous then armed conflicts may be necessary? This does seem rather arbitrary though.

Also, does that mean there's an objectively morally superior code out there that we should, or are obligated to, follow?

Random:
For instance bush and iraq in his axis of evil. I was no expert on iraq, but even I knew of the sunni/shia sh1tstorm that was being held in check by saddam. It was also patently obvious he wouldn't have nuclear weapons (chemical maybe, nuclear, no). In essence, some would have argued that saddam was a necessary evil (*ducks*), even by western moral standards as the alternatives were arguably worse. And there are other ways they could have gone about disposing saddam anyways (and they were trying, and reasonably successful too). The US seems less interested, or overtly aggressive with korea, a viable military threat. The cost of their last campaigns in that region may be reason enough discourage involvement. So maybe there were other reasons for bush shenanigans in iraq. After his tenure blair said something to the tune of he felt he was mandated by god to involve himself in iraq (after, because british are very separate church and state). I'm not sure about bush but he's probably said similar, during his tenure even.
This world is getting smaller. We are in a global village. It is inevitable that we will evolve something akin to a 'objective' morality. It will still, to an extent, remain subjective. Morality is determined by society/community. When every human sees other humans as members of a humanity-community, it is inevitable that a common ground will be engineered. That's why communication into those countries is important. Twitter/facebook played a mighty role in the Arab spring for instance.

So, on what do we base our morality? I believe on ourselves as humans. On progress. On non-conflict. America has its excesses(lot of excesses) but it still remain a very free country. The morality of equality and inalienable right to liberty of EVERY man should be upheld. Some other regressive laws/morals will disappear with time. Slavery is immoral now, isn't it?
Iran is a scientifically progressive country yet their women are in bondage. Yet, they want to annihilate groups of their fellow humans on earth. They don't have the mentality of equality.
Once, you cannot feel/respect what others do/feel,individually or in societies, you will be prone to violence. Don't then expect your business not to be messed with. Your country will be gleefully attacked in the name of freedom. In the name of defense. You brought it on yourself.
BTW, obligated to follow is too strong a term. We are humans, there will always be differences. Hell, in true federal societies, some laws differ state to state! But there must be a general principle to follow based on human interactions. Male and female relationship especially.

North korea has NUCLEAR BOMBS. End of story. Reunification with the south is their/the only way out.

The US have evolved another strategy of toppling dictators. From outright assassination to coups and now whatever they did in libya and currently in syria. Let the people free themselves. The resentment will be bypassed.

I hate what they did to iraq. I don't have a definite opinion because I know so 'little' about the war. But as it is, I sincerely hate the shortsighted American administrator that bundled up that occupation. History/posterity will surely reveal more. I'm waiting.
Christianity EtcRe: Should There Be Interference In Other Cultures When Rights Are Involved? by Avicenna: 12:25pm On Aug 23, 2012
I don't think so. Interfering aggressively(invasions, wars) always leaves resentment long after the events are over.
The best way is to choose some citizens and expose them to the lifestyle(human rights, liberties, democracy, technology, science, luxury, and other benefit of a progressive society) hitherto alien to them. Then, an abrupt stop. Maybe denying of work permit or outright deportation. This people WILL not/CANNOT return fully to their regressive culture. So, a little compromise, here and there, they are on their way to freedom. It will take long but it may work better. Afterall, they are changing themselves. That's how the spartans 'lost' the war.

But the economic benefits of invading and exploiting a country is too tempting to overlook. What better guise to invade than for democràcy?

Finally, it is immoral to ignore others as they suffer simply because they suffer the misfortune of being born in a backward society. Rwanda genocide. Bosnia genocide. Jewish holocaust. Would you if you had the power(using 'interference') stop it in its early years? I know you said human rights but this can also be regarded as one. What I'm trying to say is, 'interfering' for economic benefits(usually denied by unreasonable target country in a global society), to stop egregious crimes/human right abuses in some countries is necessary tho not desirable. This may contradict my first answer but hope you get exactly what I meant. Its somehow difficult to articulate precisely the complex morality I'm following.

OLAADEGBU: 100 Points To Heaven!

A man dies and finds himself at the pearly gates. An angel meets him and asks what he was doing at the gate.

"I want to go in,"

he says.

"Can I?,"

The angel replies,

"Here’s how it works. You need 100 points to make it into heaven. You tell me all the good things you’ve done, and I will give you a certain number of points for each item, depending on how good it was. When you reach 100 points, you get in."

"Okay?,"

the man says,

"I was married to the same woman for 50 years and never cheated on her, even in my heart."

"That's wonderful," says the angel,

"that's worth 3 points!,"

"three points?!," the man exclaimed while wondering in his mind how he can meet up with the 100 points.

"Well, I attended church all my life and supported its ministry with my tithes and offerings."

"terrific!," says the angel.

"that's certainly worth a point!,"

"One point?!," he shouted.

"I started a soup kitchen for the homeless in my city and worked in an orphanage for motherless babies."

"Fantastic, that's good for two more points," he says.

"Two points?!," Exasperated, the man cries,

"Well, at this rate it’ll just be by the grace of God that I ever get into heaven."

"Bingo, 100 points!," the angel said,

"Come on in!,"

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8,9).

OLAADEGBU: Abiodun Kumuyi (Wife of Dr. W.F. Kumuyi, died 2009)

"On the morning of Saturday, April 11, 2009, she woke up as usual and joined the Faith Clinic session from the retreat venue on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. As she listened to her husband leading the congregation in soul-stirring hymns, she joined and sang with a surprisingly strong and clear voice. All her weaknesses seemed to have disappeared. Her face glowed as she sang along:

“There is a new name written down in glory,
And it’s mine, O yes, it’s mine!
And the white robed angels sing the story,
“A sinner has come home”.
For there’s a new name written down in glory,
And it’s mine, O yes, it’s mine;
With my sins forgiven I am bound for heaven,
Never more to roam.”

Those taking care of her were over-joyed at the sudden transformation. They watched as she sang happily, then, settled down to listen to the Pastor’s Message titled: “The Shield of Faith”, which stressed protection for believers, pulling down strongholds and preservation in the shelter of the Almighty Father. At the end of the message, she became engrossed in the prayers that followed; and as soon as she heard the final "In Jesus Name", she said,

"Amen".

Then, she turned her face, shut her eyes, and passed to glory".

Sweetnecta: @Avicenna: Since you are chomping on Muhammad [sa] as your that example of prophet you dislike or disbelieve, tell me if there was no Islam on earth before Muhammad [sa] declared he was a prophet of God to preach Islam? Them who did Muhammad [sa] fleeced? Or you are just angry for no logical reason except that you are spiritually lazy and deceitful and hence calls true prophet of your Creator Who you are denying criminals?

I asked myself a question the other day, just to reaffirm in myself that God does exist; Obviously I was young once, like in the teenage years, then i got older. If there is no God Who has put in my body the mechanism of aging, what exact age would I love to remain forever and why?

Whatever age and my reason, somebody else will have a different age and reason and somebody may just have the same set of age and reason as me. What is for sure though is that some varied answers will emerge among the human population. The God Who has created the smallest details in us, even our finger prints to be different and unique to each person, the snow flakes to be different from one another has made a single set of realities for all of us; we will live and die and He has promised to have a Judgment Day for us where he will not wrong anyone even in His justice.
Again, do not distort history. I know enough myself.

We v been through this before. Your EVIDENCE is not EVIDENCE! Let Allah himself prove to me he exists. I'm waiting.

have you told your muslims girlfriend, yet, while your parents may keep you still since they really can disown you, the muslim woman will drop you like a bad habit.

And Muhammad [sa] did not start Islam. He reestablished it as instructed and Allah The God Who you do not believe exist commissioned him and perfect the completed religion which started with Adam [as] on him.

Or you do not know that Islam is submission to the WILL of God to be over your own will?
I think you should tone down your insults. I can also return them easily.

What you don't know can't hurt you.

No matter how you want to rehash history, interpret to suit yourself, I do not care. I give my opinions after years of following a religion I deem to be invalid. Like the rest.

If ALLAH require me submitting my will to him( I have been told this from my first madrasat to my school MSSN), then he should tell me. I don't need you telling me what I know. I don't need you preaching my former faith to me, let Allah himself tell me. If he exists that is.

@Wiegraf

I can't get any atheistic literature where I am. Sadly. If you ask them bookshops, they look at you somehow AND they won't have it still. Maybe, when I'm out of here, I will get all of them. I have such a long list.
The selfish gene. Thanks for the synopsis.
Christianity EtcRe: Calling The Humanist Bluff. by Avicenna:
Mr_Anony: All well and good.
I agree it is in the self interest of an individual to work towards a progressive society by being benevolent.

I agree that being kind to our children is important to our evolution (I won't define it as 'altruistic' though because they are our children so it is more like a 'selfish' duty to our offspring and doesn't really qualify as selfless love)

I do not agree that based on an atheistic premise, that altruism is a rational response. Being "good for goodness sake" is a meaningless statement and just a fancy way of saying being "good for no reason". Just like saying "talking just for the sake of talking" or "laughing for laughing sake" or "being mad for madness sake" it means nothing.

Now if poor people are a threat to society, the most logical solution would be to kill them off so that they are not a burden on the rest of the society. That should serve your self-interest much better than being benevolent towards them and having to drag them along.

Another problem for the humanist is how does he rationally justify dying for someone else since it is not in his self interest to do so?

My friend Avicenna, I do not hold that a secular humanist does not do good, what I am saying is that based on a secular worldview you do not do good within reason. You do good in spite of your 'better' judgment.

That is what I call "blind faith" because your actions - noble as they may be - are devoid of reason.
I'm surprised. That you think the most logical solution is kill off the poor people. NO, IT IS NOT. The most logical solution is taking them out of poverty even if it requires trading/invading/subjugating people of other countries!
History has kept repeating itself. One society must survive over the other. This is nature. Until we can be completely self -sustaining(I don't think its possible now), the selfishness of one country to the other will always be there. Now, who do countries do this for? Their society, their people(poor or any other adjectives) and finally the individuals.

Dying for your dog is irrational. This is when your emotions have clouded your reason. You do not know which gene will express itself strongly than the other. This should point out that the total human system is flawed. Some people kill their dogs.

Dying for other people in wars is protecting your society. You v accepted you are going to die. Why not die for someone you consciously or unconsciously perceive to be better than you? Why not exchange your life for two other people or entire platoon/company/brigade? These are reason.

Disregarding emotional actions, most altruitic actions are indeed not that altruistic when you look at it. They fall within reason. I said before that I feel good when I do good. Who knows, I may love the feeling, then do good SPECIFICALLY to get that feeling? That's within reason.

I won't say Humanism is perfectly good or anything like that. In my self-interest, I will not allow the affairs of other people to disrupt my own. Unless, I decide theirs have better value to society. I will kill anyone that tries to kill me. I will fight competition using everything I have, unfairly or fairly. I support death sentence for especially violent crimes(in this case, the logical thing is to get rid of such maniac/demonstrable threat from the society, permanently). I'm pro-life even tho I know most of them unwanted babies may become a threat to society, they have a right to live. All this morality preferences fall within reason. We have survived with it for centuries long before any of the abrahamic religions came into existence and we will continue with it long after they are extinct.
Christianity EtcRe: Calling The Humanist Bluff. by Avicenna: 5:12am On Aug 18, 2012
I'd like to chip in here.
I think it is in the self interest of a individual to have a working and progressive society.
Compared to living alone chasing animals, I think living in society gives a better chance of individual survival. It is in the interest of the individual to protect the society.
Passing on the gene is a cornerstone of evolution. This makes it especially necessary to be selfless/altruistic to ones children.
The poor people in a society are a threat to the society. Because hunger makes you do all kinds of things. Being altruistic to them is another way of preventing their falling into crime.
Finally, being good for goodness sake actually makes me feel good. I can't describe the feeling I get knowing fully well I just lifted up another human to the best of my ability.

Arabs. Jews. Are especially domineering group of people. What better way to acquire power and control people than religion? All your lies, inefficiencies are looked over. Your most egregious behaviour is regarded as an act of God.

Europeans came into the game rather late. So, they took one of the foreign prophets, remoulded it in their image and voila, we have a imperial weapon of subjugation and 'justifier' of some rather genocidal crimes.

The thing is, logicboy, most average Nigerians do not know what racism means. Seriously.
Until after they travel out of the country and witness firsthand bigotry, then they understand how evil, demeaning racism is.

I was told once that racism is not my business. That white people are more knowledgeable than we are therefore superior to us. By someone that I respected so much. He probably hasn't read up on his history or knew nothing of WHAT racism meant. Education is important. History is even more important. I learnt about slavery myself. NO ONE told me. NO school I attended taught that. They prefer to live in denial. This is all we can be they tell themselves.

So, when I see you open threads about racism, I know you won't get much posts because they simply do not know what racism is. I speak for most average Nigerians I knew.
