Dissenting Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) if ongoing talks to resolve the political impasse threatening the party fail to yield any tangible result. Kano State Governor, Dr Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso, disclosed this to the Hausa Service of the BBC Friday, ahead of the Tuesday meeting of the party scheduled to discuss the crisis. According to Kwankwaso, who is also an arrowhead of the group of five northern governors that have been traversing the country to seek ways of re-uniting the ruling. party, if genuine truce fails the governors have several options from which to chose, including that of defecting to another party. He noted that: "if PDP leaders are circumspect and heed our requests, then we will remain in the fold. But if we smell a rat, we don't have any stress moving to APC because many of its stalwarts are our people." The governor revealed that apart from the seven of them that joined the splinter PDP-II, there were other governors, who although have not indicated their support in public, were sympathetic to their move of protesting against the PDP-I chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur. Kwankwaso had last Thursday met with stakeholders of the PDP in Kano where the current impasse in the party was top on the agenda. www.thisdaylive.com/articles/kwankwaso-we-ll-join-apc-if-talks-fail/158513/ |
She may be performing but I was disappointed when I visited MMIA, Lagos. Yes they are renovating it but it seems to be at a snail's pace. Seems past governments didn't touch that airport at all. And the road leading away from the Airport? Pathetic!! I wonder what the current government is doing regarding that. And to think that Airport serves as an International Airport, I wonder what foreigners have to say about us.
The state of that road is too bad...but I hear there are plans to concession and develop via PPP...and plans are already at an advanced stage...pls they should hurry up |
I'm sure you have eyes don't you, you are as dumb as your pay masters you know. Can't you see work on ground go to lagos and see everything. Reabilitation is easier than building new tracks old fat pig. Don't you think before you talk at least we are seeing has he project is progressing . We miss abacha man.
Lol...na 2 throw insult you resort to...lmao...have those two projects been completed?..Yes or No?..if you claim they are on-going equally the refinery rehabilitation is on-going too..and sometime this year Port-harcourt refinery announced an increase in its output... Lastly how long has Lagos light rail lasted?...right from the time of Lateef Jakande and Fashola has spent well over 6 years still nothing.. |

Pls you guys shouldn't spoil Gbawe's fun...this is the kind of news that makes him wet his pants in orgazmic excitation... |
This shows that contrary to what Lagos media will want us to believe...Lagosians are fed up with fashola and APC's anti-poor policies |
Symphony007: a commendable step but the problem in nigeria is not signing MOU's or awarding projects. It's the ability to supervise them to the end. I see no reason why the 16th largest producer of tomato in the world would be loosing 50% of it's harvest to rot. We'll be watching. Its not just another MOU but one already backed with action... The seven pilot warehouses are to be established in Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Kwara, Gombe and Oyo and this will commence in October. |
awodman: ....“However, to say the President will contest the election, let the heavens fall is not the way to go. No sacrifice is too great to make for the survival of this nation.”....What sacrifice is the stup! d governor saying here...sacrifice that Jonathan shouldn't contest?...why can't same Hausa-Fulani who have ruled this country for years without anything meaningful make sacrifice for other regions to rule the country...Enough of this born to rule mentalility!! Jonathan has the right to vote and to be voted for |

Symphony007: How does the so called perishables get to the airport without spoiling when investments have'nt been made in modern storage facilities in farms and cooling vans, where are you exporting them to? Because no country will buy perishables which are very sensitive from a country like nigeria where there is no organisation. The fabricated structures will arrive the country by october end for installation...and about the investment in modern storage facilities just this week FG and Elumelu firm signed an MOU for building warehouses in all local govts that can house all types of produce and also have facilities for putting the produce in crates and cartons www.ngrguardiannews.com/business-news/131896--govt-afex-initiate-warehouse-project-for-farmers There is a high level inter-ministeral committe between the Aviation ministry,Agric ministry and FAAN working for success of this project and already because of this a new department has been created in FAAN www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/air-cargo-revolution-how-nigerian-farmers-would-profit/ |

I can see some people trying to say that it was IMPORT WAIVERS granted Dangote that made him so...sorry dangote is an industrialist...Let me help out with some of the verifiable GEJ's govt has introduced and pursued that has helped Dangote and other industrialists 1) Dangote cement and other cement manufacturing firms benefited massively from the BACKWARD INTEGRATION POLICY on cement which was pursued aggresively by the current minister of Investment Aganga And we know cement is the major drive of Dangote companies www.vanguardngr.com/2013/07/fg-explains-high-price-of-cement/ 2) Because of a CBN INTERVENTION POLICY and the current drive in agriculture led by ADESINA,Dangote is setting a tomato paste processing industry in kano mobile.bloomberg.com/news/2013-06-30/africa-s-richest-man-vies-with-china-in-nigeria-tomatoes.html 3) Dangote because of the current NATIONAL SUGAR MASTERPLAN and the BACKWARD INTEGRATION POLICY which was initiated by AGANGA and is been pursued aggresively is setting a sugar plantation and sugar processing plants in Adamawa and kwara www.thisdaylive.com/articles/imported-sugar-deploying-backward-integration-against-nigeria-s-addiction/156592/ www.vanguardngr.com/2013/05/dangote-plans-n200bn-sugar-factories-in-sokoto-kebbi-states-2/ |
You guys should pls spare Obiagelli...Obviously Sнε doesn't know the role good storage facilities play in agriculture especially in this case where each of the 774 LGA's will host @ least one warehouse... |
@leighcon..try and understand the current Fertilizer policy before making ur assertions Nobody distributes fertilizer from abuja...instead farmers are registered in an electronic system and govt subsidizes the price of this fertilizer by sending them e-vouchers and farmers approach registered private sector fertilizer with vouchers and collect the fertilizer by completing the payment..... What you ωнεяε referring to is the old system as currently govt does not distribute fertilizer but subsidizes and monitors... |
rainbowman: From what I could discern from the Summit, the FG has its own over agenda on Agriculture and its up to states to tap in to this overall programme as it suits them. It is about vertical and horizontal integration and the main beneficiaries are the people. The minister further said that he just organized a meeting with all Agric Commissioners of which the Osun State Commissioner was a participant and 97 % if captured Osun farmers benefited from the GES scheme amounting to 58,000 or so farmers. In my opinion I detect a disconnect between his Excellency and his advisers. More so his speech at the end of the session was at best grandstanding as he contradicted himself so many times. I would suggest State Governments rather that throwing away the baby and bath water should key into this scheme to get credit for the business farmers and generally improve the livelihood of the citizenry. I must say, I was genuinely excited from what I watched however on the downside some of the foreign investors expressed their disappointment on the difficulty in getting import waivers for agric machinery, poor state of infrastructure and some government policies. I felt that this could have been highlighted by the newspapers rather than the Aregbesola issue.Your analysis are always spot on... Like you said if Osun's Agric commissioner was very much present in that meeting with Adesina..then why the grandstanding by Aregbe? As for some of the downsides I think the Agric Minister should suggest some of this waivers to the president so that they can be captured in the 2014 budget...something similar was done for the aviation sector |
Obiagelli:How about storage, transport and preservation...don't they play a very large role on the price of commodities.. When you say osun has empowered their system do they have a strong Market board that will buy off not just eggs but other farm produce? |
The Federal Government on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a private firm, African Exchange Holdings, to build 800 warehouses across the country to mitigate post-harvest losses suffered by farmers. It regretted that about 40 per cent of farm produce were being wasted each harvest year, hence the need for the construction of the warehouses from October. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, who spoke during the event in Abuja, said the warehouses would be built in each local government area, where small-scale farmers would store their produce. Adesina explained that although the government had built silos across the country for storage of farm produce, they were for large-scale storage and not useful to small-scale farmers. “Nigeria has lost huge sums of money to post-harvest wastages and losses due to the inability of farmers to store their produce during harvest. You can’t trade poverty, but you can trade wealth, that is why President Goodluck Jonathan, in his Transformation Agenda on Agriculture, is doing everything possible to make wealth through agribusiness,” he said. Adesina, who extolled the business acumen of the Chairman, AFEX Holdings, Mr. Tony Elumelu, and other partners in the warehousing project, said strengthening of the agricultural markets was critical to diversifying the country’s economy. “Our partnership with AFEX will help to improve the access of farmers to markets, reduce post-harvest losses, stabilise prices and raise their incomes. We are rapidly modernising agriculture in Nigeria and the development of the warehouse receipt systems will underpin the successful establishment of thriving agricultural commodities exchange in Nigeria,” the minister said. Elumelu, while thanking the minister for cooperating with AFEX in ensuring that farmers get the right pay for their sweat, said he was pleased with the Federal Government for delivering sustainable investment in the country’s agribusiness sector. According to him, the initiative is a step towards financially empowering more farmers and ensuring that agriculture is not only commercially viable, but has a positive contribution to the Nigerian economy. The Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprise, Mr. Benjamin Dikki, stated that ceding some Federal Government’s warehouses for agriculture purpose would enhance the performance of farmers, as well as combat the food insecurity in the country. Obiagelli: trust me a commercial farmer does not even bother himself about subsidized fertiliser, because the fertiliser distributed by the FG is of low quality and is not diverse as there are different fertiliser for different crops.GES was never targeted @ commercial farmers but to help develop the capacity of small scale farmers...its just same way we cry that banks should support SME's not only supporting gigantic projects like Dangote's refineries |
Obiagelli: You've got to be kidding me, ask the farmers on ground, do you know there is scarcity of maize as we speak, do you know a kilo of maize cost 88 naira and soya beans 122 naira per kilo. The beauty of discussions is the variety of opinions..some has given an account of how he followed the program on TV and you are trying to wave if it off... Because maize and soya beans are costly does it now imply that the GES scheme has failed...its farm input like Fertlizer and seeds the only things that affect the price of farm inputs? Now did you see the part whr aregbesola was asked what he has done differently to aid private sector develop agriculture in Osun does his answer sound plausible n sustainable? We need to start viewing issues objectively and criticize constructively, rather than this pull him down syndrome...didn't you see how the other Govs acknowledged the sucess of the scheme and went ahead to list their challenges.. |
Obiagelli: Where is the results of the phantom success in the fertiliser distribution in other states, you should discuss with farmers in your state and here from them. Here is your answer from an independent observer rainbowman: I watched the State Governors session yesterday, though, I missed the keynote address from the Honourable Minister of Agriculture. From what I gathered, however, I discovered that the Minister had all the data including names and locations of all farmers who benefited from the GES programme with regards to fertilizer. Moreso, other state governors including the Governors of Kebbi, Anambra, Kogi and Cross Rivers state all had stories of how successful the scheme was but still pointed out some shortcoming where the Minister ought to improve. So its surprising that if some states recorded such feats while Mr Aregbesola could not.Other Governors were talking about improving value chains, bringing in investors and giving them some incentives such as land and tax holidays so as to readily process cash and food products, Mr Aregbesola claimed that the whole Agric transformation was a sham. For instance the Anambra state governor along with Governor Dakingari of Kebbi mentioned their success stories on rice production, using Sure P funds to purchase the products for storage from the peasant farmers in order to ensure price stability and income for the farmers however out brother from Osun state was just purely negative and obviously had no grasp about the issue at hand. I was really dissapointed with his response when asked what his state is doing differently in order to encourage investors to come and invest all he could point out was that he was feeding 300,000 pupils with one egg per week to which the entire session erupted in laughter. That is not to say that venture is not a good feat in itself, but the real question remains the sustainability of the whole venture since the resounding theme of the Summit is to make Agriculture private sector driven. As for the agriculture transformational agenda, I believe that there has to be cooperation between the Federal and State Governments regardless of political orientation, in that the States identify areas which are favourable to the them, bring in the investors and ask the Federal Government to provide gurantees for funding and policies since the state government more or less own the land. |
