Politics › Re: Power Generation Drops To 2,628.6 Megawatts by awodman: 10:32am On Aug 11, 2013
Maxymilliano: Familiar excuses;

In June, Power generation drops to 2,290MW following the vandalism of two major gas pipelines supplying gas to eight power generation stations,

In August, Power generation drops to 2,628.6MW as a result of severe leaks in the supply of gas to some strategic power plants across the country

Yet, Tariff increases amid darkness ...
In june it dropped to 2,290MW and in August it fell to 2,628..meaning that the fault in June was corrected and definitely this will also be corrected. As long as the current crop of PHCN staffs are still in-charge I doubt if we won't have cases like this re-occurring.

However,am happy that PHCN staffs are currently been paid their severance package and that hopefully by September the private sector guys will take over.Am also happy that before year end at least 7 of the 10 NIPP plants would be on stream thereby making cases like this not to be severe.

I will call all the current govt has done in the power sector a ruse if by next year June I don't see a depature from the old order. As ƒσя now I will continue to be patient with them believing they are on the right path.

Politics › FG Finally Begins Pay-off Of PHCN Workers by awodman(op): 6:49am On Aug 07, 2013
The federal government Tuesday said the payment of
severance benefits to workers of the Power Holding
Company of Nigeria (PHCN) had commenced in earnest
with the approval of about N118 billion for about 20,304
members of staff, who had been cleared.

The payment, said to have commenced on August 1, was
being made by the Office Accountant General of the
Federation (OAGF).

The Chairman, Implementation Committee on the
settlement of the PHCN staff terminal benefits, Mr. Godswill Igali, said the initial batch of 3,938 names of staff comprising those from generation companies (GENCOs) and PHCN headquarters had been forwarded to the OAGF for payment, which was to the tune of N34.585 billion.

Also, on August 5, yet another 16,366 members of staff of distribution companies (DISCOs) were cleared by the
auditors and were ready for onward transmission to the
OAGF for payments valued at about N84.5 billion.

He said so far, 20,304 staff had been cleared for payment.

He said: "Hopefully, more staff will be cleared by the
auditors before the end of this week as it is a continuous
process.”

However, the disbursements was expected to address
some of the labour issues that had constituted bottlenecks to the smooth privatisation of the PHCN successor companies.

Politics › What President Jonathan Said In Cambridge by awodman(op): 7:52am On Aug 05, 2013
What we witnessed in Cambridge was a complete
surprise. President Goodluck Jonathan turned the tables
on us by challenging business leaders to stop moaning and Lamenting.

“We have gone past all that.

What I expect of all of you who are captains of industry and commerce as well as banking; oil and gas;
telecommunications etc is to rise to the challenge posed by Adam Smith as far back as 1790.

“It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to that revenue, but something more than in that proportion.”

I want our nation to benefit from your leadership skills
which you have advertised vigorously by your strength of
character and sense of purpose.

It already agreed that leaders are endowed with a clear
focus on what they want to achieve. It is precisely for this reason that I want you to partner with the government on the critical issue of DELIVERY (no more talking please). I want action. Let us agree on our priorities – and focus on no more than six items. We cannot do everything all at the same time. The fresh initiative will be driven by government/private sector partnership in such areas as:

Infrastructure and power
Education
Health
Agriculture and water
Security
Tourism

We do not need consultants to tell us what we already
know. Speaking for myself, we should plan for the next
100 years so that whatever we are able to deliver now will be anchored on well thought out long-term vision. Even if we do not receive accolades now, history will eventually give us credit.

Now more than ever, it is the future of our nation we have
to grapple with, within the context of the global
village. The experts have repeatedly told us (and I believe they are right) that the overarching drivers of the future are:

Technology
Demography
Consumer market
Resource scarcity

However, we must readily acknowledge that it is not only
western societies who are handicapped by the inability to
adapt to changing realities. We are just as guilty.

Regardless, this is the time to rebrand our nation – not by
fine rhetoric or catchy slogans but by what we are actually able to deliver as evidenced by measurable
performance. Indeed, we have no option other to
benchmark our performance against what other nations
e.g. Malaysia, South Korea and Singapore have done when faced with the same dire straits in which we find
ourselves. They have succeeded in turning challenges into vast opportunities. They are not endowed with natural resources, what they have in abundance are talents. However, what we will not be doing is to repeat the grave errors which afflicted Argentina. At the turn of the last century, it was a prosperous country but by the end of the same century it had piled up huge debts while
simultaneously grappling with an economy in tatters. God willing that will not be Nigeria’s portion. Amen.”

President Goodluck was rewarded with warm
applause. However, he was not yet done. He emphatically declared:

“I desire a legacy of prosperous Nigerians at the end of my tenure. Indeed, I vow to continue to work hard in order to create a brighter and enduring future for all Nigerians. We shall continue to do all that we can to create a brighter and enduring future for all Nigerians-a future of hope and prosperity…”

It is my ambition to continue to work towards the
sustained growth of the country’s economy. I promise that under my leadership, Nigeria would not just be a land of great potential but also a nation where positive changes transform the lives of the people.

Making sure women take their rightful place in Nigeria’s
government is only the beginning and a vital step that
would pave the way for a host of other critical measures,
my administration is implementing to improve the lives
and opportunities of women.

I attribute my decision to entrust women with the
responsibilities of high office to the exceptional zeal
displayed by my mother Eunice. This contributed to my
decision to entrust the women in my government with the responsibilities of high office.

Regardless, the President stayed on track and announced
that he would soon launch the “Cambridge Scorecard”
which would enable the government to monitor, at the end of each month, very robustly the pace at which the
prioritized goals were being achieved.

Dr.Goodluck Jonathan was quick to make the point that our nation’s image is quite frankly is not what it should be. All the same, we must not despair. After all South Korea is a case in point. Only two decades ago its goods, from electronics to cars were considered sub-standard. Now it’s a different story with Samsung smart phones; LG
Electronics; KIA Motors and numerous others. The lesson
to be learnt is that branding is a critical element and it
requires a great deal of guts and determination to succeed regardless of the barriers or obstacles.

It was typical of President Goodluck Jonathan to roll out a
list of those he has identified as “Champions” –
AlhajiAlikoDangote (cement, sugar, salt and noodles;
etc). Several others were mentioned but it was when Mr.
President announced JK Randle Professional Services that
the audience went wild!!

Dr. Jonathan had obviously done plenty of homework as he added that the common trend among those business
leaders is their strength of character and their enormous
capacity to stay focused while others crumble under
pressure.

Politics › Jonathan Chides Elders For ‘provocative Statements’ by awodman(op): 6:59am On Aug 05, 2013
President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday chided some unnamed national elders who he accused of making
provocative statements capable of further dividing the
country along primordial cleavages.

The President described as worrisome that those fanning
the embers of disunity were elders who witnessed the civil war, saw its devastating effects on Nigerians and were supposed to be teaching the younger generation the need to be united.

Jonathan spoke at the 80th birthday reception organised in honour of the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Anthony Anenih, at the
International Conference Centre, Abuja.

He told former national leaders who attended the event,
including Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and General
Abdusalam Abubakar (retd) to help in converting Nigeria’s diversity to strength.

He added that although the idea behind the creation of 36 states was for the country to be united, some elders still continued to exploit the cleavages.

The President said Anenih had continued to be relevant
politically despite his age because he had refused to join
the elders who always worked to divide the country along
religious and tribal sentiments.

He said, “When you are with Anenih, you will begin to
wonder how he has remained relevant politically over the
years. It is not easy for a politician to stay on top for a very long time.

“I see something in him which is the advice I will give all of us. Anenih as a leader has shown that he is a nationalist. He has not shown that he belongs to one tribe or religion.

“In spite of the challenges of politics, the unpredictable
environment of politics, he continues to stand tall. That is
why I am using this opportunity that we are celebrating
Anenih at 80 to plead with our elders to sing the song of
unity in this country.

“They should not continue to celebrate the cleavages that
probably supposed to have separated us. Let us convert
those cleavages to strength and turn Nigeria into one
indivisible nation.

“When Nigeria was amalgamated almost 100 years ago,
we had the North, South, West and East regions. You can
see that we have primordial cleavages. Maybe 36 states
were created because those cleavages were not bringing
the desired unity to the country.

“But even after dividing us up to 36 states, we still exploit these cleavages instead of strengthening ourselves. This is not the best.

“Even sometimes, such provocative statements come from elders who witnessed the civil war and are supposed to teach the younger ones the need for us to unite; the need to see ourselves as Nigerians.

“For Anenih, you have not been associated with such
provocative statements and probably that is why this hall
is filled up with all our former leaders, former CJNs, former
and present governors and religious leaders.”

The host, Anenih, said Nigeria might not be able to get to
the Promised Land without unity, forgiveness and the spirit of give-and-take.

He said since all those who mattered in Nigeria were
gathered in his honour, it would be the national interest for all of them to decide to forget the past and resolve τ̅☺ move forward.

He said he was thrilled by the presence of former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his birthday church service earlier in the day, describing it as a sign of forgiveness.

Specifically, Anenih asked Obasanjo, Abdusalami,
Babangida and Gen. Theophilus Danjuma to work for the
peace of the country.

He said members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram,
who he described as the nation’s worst enemies, would
think twice if they saw the four former military officers
behind Jonathan.

He said, “I want to appeal to Babangida, Abdusalami,
Obasanjo and Danjuma that we need peace. They can give us peace.

“When you approach President Jonathan, you get disarmed because of his humility. If all of us are behind him and genuinely advise him, even our worst enemy, Boko Haram, will think twice if they see the three of them.

“I want to go to the Villa and find them eating together
with the President, it is then I can go and sleep.”
Anenih said his special 80th birthday message was for
politicians to wait for their turn as Jonathan had just
finished half of his first term.

“The President has just finished half of his first term. Let us take our time, wait for our time. Let us work together. Let us put our hands behind the President. Tomorrow it will be your time, today it is his turn. God is with Jonathan. We have to reach out,” he said.

In attendance at the event were a former Vice-President
Alex Ekwueme; Governors Emmanuel Uduaghan, Delta;
Liyel Imoke, Cross River; Isa Yuguda, Bauchi; and ex-
governors Christopher Alao-Akala and Segun Oni of Oyo
and Ekiti respectively.

Others were Justice Muhammed Uwais; Justice Alfa
Belgore; Chief Barnabas Gemade; Senator Ken Nnamani;
Alhaji Ghali Naaba; traditional rulers, members of the
National Assembly and members of the Federal Executive
Council, among others.

Politics › Jonathan Orders Federal Agencies To Pay N2.5bn Tax Owed To Edo Govt by awodman(op): 6:30am On Aug 05, 2013
BENIN CITY — THERE are indications that President
Goodluck Jonathan, might have ordered all federal
agencies in Edo State to pay the over N2.5billion owed to
the state government from Pay As You Earn, PAYE, to avoid a repeat of the crisis that led to the closure of Benin Airport last week.

Vanguard gathered that the President gave the charge,
shortly after he met with Governor Adams Oshiomhole,
who visited with him to explain the reasons for the closure of the administrative building of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, at the Benin Airport last
Monday.

It was learnt that the President agreed that meeting tax
obligations was not negotiable and directed all federal
agencies to meet their tax obligations to the state.
After the FAAN management had apologised to Nigerians
and Governor Oshiomhole for the disruption in flights
caused by the Benin Airport incident, FAAN, Vanguard
learnt, was making frantic effort to pay the N15million
owed to the Edo State Government from PAYE.

The chairman of the Edo State Board of Internal Revenue,
Chief Useni Elamah, had last week expressed frustrations
in collecting taxes from federal agencies in the state
despite the fact that the state government was meeting its tax obligation to the Federal Government and disclosed that the federal agencies owed the state government over N2billion.

Will you fix feeder roads first and wait for the FG to fix the main roads while pot-holes cause traffic gridlocks, trailers falling with their containers, an unsightly environment, slow movement of goods and services all in the name of Politiking?? That's the reason Nigeria never moved ahead all this while.

This is something that was taught in Economics class in secondary school. Fashola is applying it and you want him to wait for one FG because of Politics??
If I was Fashola I will concentrate on my feeder roads then constantly appeal to FG to do justice to those roads..and since am already aware that something is been done,I will do a thorough follow-up to ensure that things are speeded up..rather than playing to the gallery and accusing FG of preventing me from constructing the road when clearly am still struglin to finish up the ones I have already taken up like Lekki-Ajah,Lagos-Badagry..

dolphinife: I want to rejoice and congratulate my brothers across the Niger for this initiative which will definitely ease the burden of travelling all the way from east to Lagos or Abuja.

Nevertheless, Ethiopian airline intervention in Enugu airport is much more strategic with no politics attached. Nothing concerns GEJ with any airline flying to and fro cos the airlines would be the one to know if the route is profitable to them or not.

By congratulating our brothers across the Niger, this shouldn't be an avenue to start abusing and cursing the southwest. I have seen some of us have started using derogatory words and comments on the southwest. Like I said before, this feat is more economical than political as a lot have started hailing GEJ as if he brought or compel ethiopian to fly direct to Enugu
Mr man don't deny GEJ of his credit when its due..you think Ethiopian Airline will just wake up and start operating flights just for economic reasons with no political undertone..

Well the president was already aware of this move and must have played a role in bringing it to fruition..which is possibly why he said this when laying the foundation stone of the international terminal of Enugu airport..

.......The Nigerian leader hinted that Ethiopian Airlines would be the first international airline to land at the airport, saying he was hopeful that this would happen next month....

Fashola has being agitating to fix it too. If he does and plants trees along it, will you term the move political or call him "flower planter" like some people do??

The most economically Important roads in Lagos are FG roads and the state can't function effectively if they're left in the state the FG wishes them.

Annointing flows from the top. You fix the most important stuffs first before undertaking the lesser ones.
You are still blowing hot air..the FG has never said they won't fix the road and they have not begged for anyone's assistance..the Oshodi-Apapa road is been worked on by JB..yea I read the five minutes of shame and it should interest you to know that the airport road is currently been handed over to a private company on a PPP model..so clearly the FG doesn't need Fashola's help..

The allocation coming to Fashola and the IGR he generates is clearly for improving the conditions of asset owned exclusively by his state and to build new ones..even the Lagos-Badagry he took over what's the rate of progress on the road.

Pls tell the intelligent Governor to face issues with his state just like the bridge in this thread and stop playing to the gallery using FG roads..enuf said

He built the Lekki toll bridge and Lekki-Ajah expressway to serve as a generator of constant funds. Why do you think its located where the rich reside??

If you settle down to study him, he's far more intelligent than you think.
So when roads where seperated and marked federal and state roads the drafters of those policies where stupid?..why will he be interested in those roads if not for cheap political gains?..has the FG said they won't or they don't have the capacity to effect major repairs on those roads?..there are alot of state roads in Lagos that are equally of economic importance, are they all in good shape?..and please don't mention Lekki-Ajah expressway which has not been completed but is currently been tolled..

Getting ready?..after over 6 years in power and he is still getting ready?..then when are we expecting the completion?..Nobody is engaging on a smear campaign but just bringing things govt might not primarily aware of to their knowledge...
