I thought about the thyriod angle as well but he didn't mention anything about his metabolism so I can's say more. However, If it's thyriod issues, it would be hypothyriodism (under active thyriod) not hyper as you mentioned.

This particular side of my farmland fence failed for the second year running as a result of rain water.
