When and where did Igbo people say that the cause of the crises in Aba was the fault of the Yorubas?  Instead Igbos have been blaming other Igbos.  Tell me one Yoruba murder case you have solved?  The issue in Aba is not just a reflection of the problems with Igbos but with the whole of Nigeria.  Remember, Imo state which is next door to Abia is not having such problems, but that does not mean criminal activities are still not going on in Imo state.  Of course I am sure if maybe Ogun, Oyo, or any Yoruba state was experiencing such level of kidnapping there will be some Igbo person making fun of the situation.  But remember it is Abia today but tomorrow could be Osun, Sokoto, etc.
Again, feel free to cry and yell about Yoruba people as much as you want, no Yoruba state is or was ever under siege and Yoruba folks don't go  around killing and kidnapping their own for money, we don't kidnap our own school kids, this is not part of our make up and we don't have such entrenched level of greed and lack of respect for human life.

Instead of wasting your breath and losing sleep about Yoruba people, why not start worrying about your own people and start looking for solutions to help your own people.

Crime rate in Lagos was way way high before Fashola took over, but he showed leadership by creating a security fund where the average lagosian and business donate money to support the police with hundreds of patrol vehicle, armored cars, BMW power bikes, weapons and amo and armored trucks.

I'm sure you heard about the 2 new bell  helicopters the state bought to fight crime, guess what, the money came from the same fund.

With a population of almost 18 million, Laagos state is one of the safest mega cities in the world.

What are your leaders doing and what have they done to fight crime and look out for your people? It's all about leadership and accountability.

I understand that Aba is going through some crises right now, but why are some Yorubas acting like their regions are very peacefull?  Afterall in the 60's, the western region was been ravished by political killings and kidnappings.   Even presently we hear of clashes between area boys, political killings etc or because one was not affected directly so it is not a problem?   Yes, Aba today has gone to the dogs, but only God knows which region will go up in flames next.
Though, this is an ibo issue and you are an ibo man, you are yet to utter the smallest concern for your own people, not even any idea or solution. As usual, it's always the standard insecure and defensive finger pointing and Yoruba this, Yoruba that. That's what's killing you, irresponsibility and lack of accountability from top to bottom.

Eevn going by your ridiculous western region references, we took care of our issues without crying, yelling and blaming ibo people.

Ndo. Yoruba people are the least of your worries.

@ poster have ever wondered why US Britain and USSR did everything possible to stop Biafra and did nothing extra to help nigeria stablize and grow after the war or are you suffering from a failure of intelligence.
Why have they not intervened in somalia , ethiopia/ erithrea ,south sudan

How come nigerian military and police have never been up to any task, is it the same Aba issue that made GEJ sack Onovo.

I wonder really what would have become of nigeria if russia and britain did not come to its aid in 1967 civil war.

The problem in Aba is simply a failure of nigerian security set up , a day before that kidnap the same police was able to stop the meeting of ibo leaders in a nearby city of owerri but couldn't stop kidnap in Aba.

The same military couldn't stop militants in niger delta and capture tompolo  the FG had to use amnesty and money to stop militancy, they couldn't stop boko haram in bauchi prison break , no wonder they left bakassi for cameroun.

Really I suggest every region produce its own police and army , because the federal army and police have nothing to offer the East.
you can hide and shift the blame as mush as you want, it doesn't change the fact that ibo people are killing ibo people, it doesn't change the fact that ibo people are kidnapping ibo people and ibo school kids.

Yes, we do have a security problem in Nigeria, but the social meltdown, the greed, the violent culture and lack of respect for the next ibo man and kid's life is local.  Even some ibo political leaders and traditional rulers are
behind many of these atrocities,

The federal government should be able to provide security and make every corner of Nigeria safe for every Nigerian, but the federal government can not change your appetite for money, general greed and violent mentality.

I suggest you read up punk. When did Nigeria introduce the rank of “Brigadier General” in its military parlance? I guess you need to know that Beajamin Adekunle had been retired from Nigerian army when the rank of “Brigadier General” was incorporated in Nigerian military lexicon. If you do not watch you progress closely, you could remain a dunce forever.
Shut your mouth and quit repeating your ignorant rubbish.

Benjamin Adekunle was promoted Brigadier-General in 1972 and was forced to retire in 1974.

@ idupaul can u take a second look at your topic? u r trying to exonerate urself from being tribalistic but your topic seems so, what statistic do u have to show that 100% of the kidnapping in Aba were carried out by igbos? Does all the crime committed in Lagos come from the yoribas? u need to be truthful to urself, seems u r being mischevious.
The mischievousness is on your side because Lagos is not predominantly Yoruba while Aba is predominantly ibo so obviously, ibo people are committing all the atrocities in Abd.

Also, the only socially and culturally mean and violent group of people in Nigeria are ibo people, they'll kill their mama for her last penny,

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola ( SAN) has sacked the Managing Director of Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA), Makanjuola Alabi over alleged financial misappropriation and abuse of office by the agency’s helmsman while in office.

Fashola, who relieved him of his job immediately approved the appointment of Mr. Tunji Bello, the former Lagos State commissioner for environment as the new managing director of the agency.
In a statement signed by the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Adesegun Ogunlewe, made available to newsmen, the appointment of Bello is with immediate effect.

The plight of the former embattled LASAA boss started when a group operating under the platform of “Majekobaje Eko Integrity Group” petitioned the Lagos State House of Asssembly on fraud allegedly perpetrated by the sacked managing director.

The petition, which was signed by Olajide O.O. and Akanbi K, was read on the floor of the House by the Clerk of the House, Taiwo Olatunji alleging that the LASAA MD paid N1.2 million every two weeks as hotel expenses for one Miss Nike Adekanbi, his wife’s younger sister, whom he employed as a consultant on human resources.

The group in the same petition alleged that LASAA realized over N100 million from mobile advert in 2009 “but Alabi claims the agency did not realize any money. The receipts issued to companies that made payments are available and have been sent to the appropriate government agencies.

“Our investigation has also revealed that Mr. Alabi acquired two plots of land in Banana Island, in Ikoyi at the rate N300 million each, the survey of the plots was carried out by Lekan Osinibi and Bobby, his staff at Baruwa Architects, whose office is situated inside LASAA,
“In an attempt to falsify account records, Alabi has moved the audit unit to his office and no staff of the agency except his cohorts can go to the audit department in his office without his ,” the group alleged.

It was also alleged in the petition that in December 2008, the LASAA MD ordered the Accountant of the, Ajewole Kehinde Johnson, to envelope 3000 dollars and he alleged that it was for the members of the Assembly as special package.

Thanks.

Other states duplicating what's going on in Lagos state wont be easy because the need to change and do the right thing comes from the minds and awareness of the leadership, their level of state pride and patriotism, also their ability or capacity to motivate and carry along the masses and have them rally around the same goal, Lagos state is already at that junction.

The government of Lagos state and the people of Lagos state are on the same page and the same journey.

Let other states start with state pride and patriotism, the rest go follow fall in place.

Lagos converts Broad Street prisons to freedom park

https://img202.imageshack.us/img202/6308/freedompark2.png

https://i53.tinypic.com/30bn2xg.png

THE Lagos State government has converted the former Broad Street prisons into an amphitheatre and museum to keep the memories of heroes past, says the Commissioner for Physical Planning & Urban Development, Mr. Francisco Abosede.

He told The Nation that as the nation celebrates 50 years of independence from British colonial rule, the state will use the opportunity to celebrate some of her heroes who were jailed in the prison, and also put in place a museum where the relics of the colonial masters and the nation’s rich history will be displayed for visitors - giving meaning to its re-christened name "Freedom Park."

The prison, according to him, played host to Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Herbert Macauly, a former Alake of Egba land and an uncle to the first Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Adetokunbo Ademola, among others.

Abosede said the greenery introduced in the park is also to encourage healthy living that is harmonious with nature.

The three-storey building, he said, has provision for a ramp to make movement easy for the physically challenged who may like to visit the park.

On how people can access the park due to the expected large turn-out of people, he said that circular buses will be available at TBS and tickets also for would- be tourists as there is no provision for car lots in the park.

On maintenance, he hinted that the park will be managed by a consortium to preserve and maintain the facilities in place.

Taking The Nation round the 10,000 square metre expanse land, the principal partner of Total Consult, architects to the project, Mr. Theo Lawson, said the whole idea of the new development is to remember the past by making reference to where the buildings were but adding modernity to the features.

For instance, he said that they are preserving the 52 cell blocks which measures 4 ft by 8ft while the chief warders’ yard has been converted to administration block.

The condemned prisoners cell and gallows, according to him, has been transformed while the old kitchen is now a food court hosting fast food outlets. The park will also have the bust of all the notable prisoners in it and serve as the state museum as the shovels, cutlasses, hand-chains and other relics of the prison will be on display.

He also hinted that the government may have begun moves to repatriate some of the colonial relics that found its way to the United kingdom to boost the collections in the museum which will cover the entire history of the nation. He revealed that the complex will be delivered by October 1, this year

doyin13:
I am not one for cutting and pasting but I will try to address each of the issues you raised.

There was no contradiction regarding civil service pay. I never argued anywhere that their
pay was too low. I argued that any increase would do nothing to help their plight. If anything
prices will probably rise to negate the effects of any salary increase. What would reduce prices
and actually help is a reduction in transport costs for food and other essential items.

On the issue of raising levies. My argument is cars should essentially be taxed off the road. Tax until
people don't feel it is viable to have cars on the road anymore. This should in any ''rational'' environment
occasion an expansion of the public transport system either through the taxes raised or the huge demand for
transport if people do dump their cars.

Lagos has the option of having fewer cars or simply more roads. If ''budgetary limitation'' militates the latter then
surely we should resort to the former. Patronage of one midsize bus is equivalent to probably having two dozen or
so cars off the roads.

I acknowledged the governor has tried, but it is clearly not enough. Trying simply isn't good enough. It is a testament
to the very low standards Nigerians are used to, that they deify a man who still rules a state where you spend half the
year in traffic. Spreading the pie too thin will not make any remarkable change. There has to be priorities that would impact
and help other sectors, and relieving the pressures on the roads would markedly improve the quality of life of the average lagosian.
In your sane and rational opinion, the state is not doing enough because they are not taxing cars off the road (Good Idea I think), but I don't see the sense and wisdom in asking the state to do such a thing right now because the other options and alternatives are still under construction and are not ready, or are you just suggesting the state compound the problem by getting rid of cars with zero alternatives and options?

Your idea sounds good, but very destructive and counter productive right now. You can not create more problems while trying to solve others.

Let's be sensible and be patient till these solution projects are online and running. Rome wasn't built in a day and only GOD can eliminate decades old problems overnight.

Fashola is indeed not a messiah and he has not only human limitations, he has time and budgetary limitations.

To start with, you are entitled to your flawed, contradictory, and unreasonable opinion.

You asserted you knowledge that many on here believe Fashola some sort of Messiah, but is asking him to do everything you listed on top of what he's able to accomplish in less than 3 years with a lousy budget of 2 billion dollars to spread around 18 million people and decades of neglected and inadequate infrastructure not calling him a messiah or a miracle worker? Are you not directly implying the same thing?

You say civil servants are underpaid and have little or no money to commute to work or to secure accommodation, now they increased their salary and is still retarded move to you.

And what percentage of the lousy 2 billion dollars you want the government to reroute to the transportation sector beyond what they are already spending on the metro rail system, the express ways, the bridges, the ten lane Lagos badagry express and tons of many random road construction and maintenance in between? The whole thing?

You also want the governor to roll out more BRT buses, where do you suggest they get the money from? raise bus fare, tax Lagosians some more to do that and take care of everything on your laundry list?

If you have some billions of dollars stashed somewhere, why not dash or borrow the state just a little to take care of your worthy concerns.

You also want the state to direct money towards other transportation options. What about all the money the state is spending on ferry service and jetties? What about the metro rail capable of transporting over a million Lagosians/day? What about the bypass and bridges? What about the ten lane badagry express with light rail access? Are these not other transportation options?

I'm not faulting your for posting your views, but with billions of Naira tied to tons of the same other transportation options, what makes you think the state is not doing enough with what they have and what other options are you talking about?

Btw, are you familiar with budgetary limitation?
