NVESTIGATION ON FASHOLA: D’Banj, 9ice, others take rally to Lagos Assembly • AC denies Tinubu’s involvement

Written by From Kunle Awosiyan and Kunle Oderemi

THE Coalition of Youths for Good Governance has concluded plans to stage a rally to protest allegations of financial misappropriation against the Lagos State governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, by a group, the New Face of Lagos.
According to one of the organisers of the rally, Mr. Tola Odunlami, the planned rally to the state House of Assembly would kick off from Adebola House, Opebi, today.

The group has popular musicians, D’Banj, 9ice and other personalities as members.

This is coming four days after the group placed a two-page advertorial in a national newspaper, alleging that Governor Fashola was involved in financial misappropriation.

Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, Odunlami described the allegation as “an impending move by the state House of Assembly to impeach Fashola,” adding that the group was totally against it.

“We are against the moves to disturb Fashola’s government. That is why we are embarking on a peaceful rally to the House of Assembly to register our views against the moves. We are for good governance and Fashola has been tested and trusted and should be allowed to lead the state without distractions,” Odunlami said.

Meanwhile, more facts have emerged on the cold war between the camp of Fashola and his predecessor, Senator Bola Tinubu, which both leaders had been trying to play down for months now.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that three main factors might have strained the relationship between them, culminating in a shadowy group, The Face of Lagos, alleging gross abuse of office by the governor in a recent newspaper advertorial.

One of the reasons for the feud was said to be a fall-out of a purported directive issued by the governor late last year to all ministries and agencies of government to suspend work on all ongoing projects to enable the administration to take stock.

The directive followed allegations of the slow pace of work on many of the projects valued at billions of naira.

It was learnt that the directive reportedly deflated some egos in the camp of the former governor, who was instrumental in the election of virtually all the members in the Lagos State House of Assembly and chairmen and councillors in the 57 local government council development areas in the state.

The order from Alausa was also said to have been informed by the concern raised in the report of auditors on the quality and progress of work on some of the projects in the state.

The directive marked a dramatic twist to the claims and counter-claims by the two stalwarts of the Action Congress (AC) over an allegation that Tinubu had resolved to dump Fashola for another party member for the governorship ticket in 2011.

In apparent reference to the allegation, a source claimed that the move to impeach the governor was, indeed, real and could further crystalise by March.

Another reason for the friction between the governor and his predecessor was said to be Fashola’s style of leadership, which some AC members in Lagos claimed did not recognise the need to empower them directly in appreciation of their role in his victory at the polls in 2007.

However, the claim has reportedly polarised the AC in the state, with some party elders who appeared satisfied with the governor’s style rooting for him in the face of the opposition from the rival camp.

Tinubu is believed to control the party machinery, just as many of the key functionaries in the current administration belonged to his camp.

There is also a grounds-well of opposition in the state civil service against the former governor because of his alleged relationship with a firm handling the revenue drive of the government.

The civil servants alleged that they were required to distribute relevant documents to agencies, individuals and organisa-tions to pay their taxes and other levies to dedicated bank accounts, while the company took the glory.

It was gathered that some of the workers were agitating for a review of the contract between the state and the firm.

The state House of Assembly, on Thursday, set up a six-man adhoc committee to investigate the allegations of financial recklessness levelled against the Fashola administration.

The members include Mr Sanai Agunbiade, Mr Rotimi Olowo, Mr Moshood Oshun, Mrs Adefunmilayo Tejuoso, Mrs Omowunmi Olatunji-Edet and the chairman, Mr Rasak Balogun.
The committee is expected to present its report to the House on February 15.

The committee was set up after the member representing Alimosho constituency II, Honourable Onibiyo Adelabu, under Matters of Urgent Public Importance, drew the attention of his colleagues to the advertorial.

“The advertorial was full of serious allegations. All of us, including the state executive arm, Senator Bola Tinubu and other party chieftains were accused in the publication,” he said.

Another member, Mr Rotimi Olowo, said all the allegations in the publication were new to him.

He, however, suggested that the House should either call on the group or set up a committee to investigate the allegations.

The member representing Agege constituency I, Mr Mudasiru Obasa, who referred to the part of the advertorial that alleged that the lawmakers had been given N20 million each and had refused to present the report of the 2008/2009 Budget Review Committee, said nobody could stampede the House to performing its functions

But the chairman, House Committee on Judiciary, Mr. Babatunde Ogala, claimed the allegations in the advertorial were the handiwork of mischief makers, while the Speaker, Mr. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, added that “If a House that has passed over 80 resolutions and introduced various programmes than any other House has done can be accused of being docile, let it be said loud and clear that no one will push the House to do what is not part of its agenda.”

Meanwhile, the AC has denied that Tinubu knew anything about allegation of financial impropriety levelled against Governor Fashola in the advertorial published the by the True Face of Lagos.

The AC, in a release signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said it was illogical for Senator Tinubu to be the one behind the said advert which sought to damage his reputation and that of the party he had expended time and energy on.

The party said the publication was a surprise, adding that it found the allegation baseless and irresponsible, since it was placed by a faceless group.

According to rumors last year, Muiz was the man to step in after Fashola, but there are tons of Jokers flexing and trying snatch the Governor's seat. Unfortunately for them, Lagosians are too politically sophisticated to fall for their nonsense and I don't think they'll let Fashola go without a fight.

Oh please hush. I remember telling you that Fashola will not accept their rift in public and I don't expect him to but you vehemently denied there is anything going on. Now, you are slowly separating yourself from both of them.

The truth is that Fashola may think he has a friend in you but I do think you are his foe because when the going gets rough, you will definitely deny him 200 times over like you've demonstrated.  Others will soon come up, the $40M  floating hotel he also denied and other things.

And I'm still insisting that  we know nothing beyond what we read in the papers. Do you Mr Amebo?

Btw, what's this got to do with denying Fashola? Fashola's approval rating is still extremely high from where I'm standing regardless of all the silly drama. So, you might want to get your head straight and out of your a!s!s.

Once again, you've demonstrated that you are an old man with underdeveloped brain. Hanging out together does not mean there is no rift between them. You vehemently denied the rift and dismissed it as rumour peddling yet you are now taking sides because the heat is becoming too much.

As a Fashola apologist, I thought you will be quick to accept the rift so you can finally separate him from the international rogue known as Bola Tinubu.
Must you always act like a silly clueless ode all the freeking time?

What's this got to do with me, I posted a link with Fashola saying he's still cool with Tinubu and I posted another one with Fashola still saying the same thing regardless of what's going on, now tell me MR DUMBO, what's that got to do with me? I'm I Mr Fashola? Was I or I'm I putting words in Fashola's mouth or do you subscribe to the content of all the garbage articles you're known for posting or do you actually believe everything in the articles you post?

And what if they're really cool together regardless of what's going, do you really know anything about about their personal relationship beyond what the media feeds you?

Texts are flying across the airwaves in the Nigerian commercial capital of Lagos as the elite get a wake up call Saturday to join in the emerging battle between Governor Babatunde Fashola and his erstwhile boss and predecessor Bola Tinubu.

Fashola was enthroned by Tinubu but the romance between both men has gone sour and some trace this to Fashola's failure to let open the state treasury at a time he has to fund huge infrastructure projects which have made him the favourite of the nation's governors.

Governor Fashola

The latest confrontation appears to have been sparked off by a two page advertisement published Thursday in a newspaper linked with Tinubu and in which a number of allegations of public funds were levied against Fashola but Lagosians are now being told to read between the lines, especially given the speed with the Lagos House of Assembly composed a panel to investigate the allegations, a prelude to impeachment proceedings.

In one of the text messages being sent out Saturday, the people of Lagos were told "we need to rise up against godfatherism like this. Lagos is the envy of other states. Our fate is in our hands."

In yet another text urging action, Lagosians were told, "here they go again, playing politics with out lives. They are trying to discredit and distract good governance that even the blind man can see in Lagos. Show your support for Governor Fashola by pressing your horn for two minutes where ever you are at 7am, 12 noon and 7pm from monday February 1, 2010. Real power is in the hands of the people. Lets use it"

Saturday's text messages are being sent by students, professionals as well as business owners and even the elderly are joining in too.

Beautification Projects: Elitist Categorisation Is Inacurate And Illogical - Fashola

Jan 27, 2010 - Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Wednesday evening described as inaccurate and illogical, views that the beautification and cleaning up efforts in the State by the present administration is elitist.

Governor Fashola who spoke during an interactive meeting with Governor’s Office Correspondents at Lagos House, Marina, added that the same beautification project is providing jobs for thousands of young boys and young girls whose parents are indigent.

In his words: “Some people have profited from the chaos and disorder that was Lagos. They will feel aggrieved that we are cleaning up the city. We don’t make any apologies for trying to clean up our state”.

“You will feel the impact of our efforts from every corner of the state whether it is in Ipaja, Victoria Island, Lawanson or Oworonshoki. Even in Ijora Badia. The people who live there, are they also elites?”, he added

Governor Fashola also stated: “More importantly for our projects, the same contractor handling a particular road project in Victoria Island is the same handling a similar road project in Alimosho. We believe that if it is good for the people in the Island, it should also be good for the people in Mainland. We have not discriminated. It is the same quality across the State”.

He asked: “The schools that we are building, is it the elites whose children attend the schools?. The BRT buses that ply the routes, is it elitist?, or the many medical missions, surgeries, jigibola which the state government organizes, are they for the elites. People should not stereotype and lock people’s thinking on their own assumptions. They should stop turning facts upside down”

The Lagos State Governor said there is a need to redefine the concept of elite and determine those who benefit from government projects.

On the issue of how many indigenes of the State have been evacuated from the scene of the crisis in Jos, Plateau State Governor Fashola said after he got an assurance of the safety of all residents of Jos from Governor Jonah Jang, the State has only offered relocation assistance to a few people who sought its assistance to return home.

While responding to a question on the adequate monitoring of ongoing State’s projects, the Governor explained that not only does every project have a project officer attached to it, there is also a monitoring team from the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget that certifies all contracts before payment, as part of many layers of monitoring.

On the Ayobo-Ipaja-Aiyetoro road which is in a deplorable state, Governor Fashola said the Government will fulfill its commitment on the road pointing out that the construction will be undertaken in two phases.

Governor Fashola added that the same scenario applies to areas like Agiliti whose design has just been completed and promised that as soon as the budget is passed, government’s presence would be felt there.

While reacting to a question on what the administration has in stock for residents of Medina Estate and Gbagada in general, the Governor said today, substantially, the State Government has succeeded in tackling the issue of flooding in Gbagada and this is still ongoing.

He said the responsibility of government is to start with the big drains which it has done with the big storm drainage in Gbagada, then the canals and later the streets, adding that if the streets are flowing and the canal is not, there will still be floods.

On how prepared the state is for the coming rainy season, Governor Fashola said the administration has demonstrated its capacity to mitigate flooding, as some parts like where people refer to as ‘River LUTH’ in Idi-Araba or Obele are now dry.

He revealed that the government is constructing channels from Yaba all through the six drainage systems of the state, trying to interconnect them, adding that about seven kilometres of canals is being built from Methodist Girls High School, Yaba, all the way to Ijora because many of the drainages have been blocked.

The Lagos State helmsman said instead of demolishing houses and churches, it is creating a new alignment which is expensive, but where all the water from Iddo, Sabo, Onike and all of that will ultimately interlink.

He urged members of the public to be wary of lands to be bought in the Lekki Free Trade Zone area, as the land for the LFTZ have been acquired, with compensation and acquisition claims already being attended to by the State Government.

While commenting on the activities of Fashola Fans club, the Governor said though every individual, organization have their fans, he is busy with his job and would only take the activities of the club as a token of the expression of what the people feel about what the present administration is doing, adding he remains focused.

On the proposed expansion of the Lagos-Badagry Express Way project, the Governor said the project which is scheduled for completion within 48 months is on course, adding that government is also looking at many ways of making it quicker if it gets funding as well as managing the traffic.

He also said Nigeria does not need the service of a foreign coach for the Nigerian national football team.

Said he: “Foreign coach to do what?. To take us the World Cup?. Is there any country that is going to the World Cup whose coach is available now. Or you want to hire that who could not qualify his own country to replace yours who qualified you, because the only ones who are available are the ones who did not qualify for the World Cup”.

“Let us know what we want. Do you want to play well and lose in the first round. We must respect coaches for who they are. There are some coaches whose style has no flair but they get the job done. If it is winning, Coach Shuaibu Amodu is winning”.

While admitting that the Nigerian National team can play better, he called for injection of more youthfulness into the team. He said Nigeria has not instituted a cadet system that enables talents to be discovered in a productive manner.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Opeyemi Bamidele had expressed appreciation to the Governor for creating time to have the interactive session with the media Correspondents who cover his activities.

He also gave kudos to the Correspondents for doing a good job, adding that several times, much emphasis is laid on what is considered as sensational stories attributed to the correspondents than the positive ones they wrote.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Lagos Governor’s Office Correspondents, Taiwo Olapade, congratulated Governor Fashola for giving hope to this generation that it is not a wasted generation, with his impactful style of administration.

The event was attended by all media Correspondents accredited to cover the Governor’s Office.

No you are not stating fact but stating the obvious. Who in his right mind will have problem in this modern world that someone has come to develop his land or his own nation, so to speak? The likes of you kept saying Igbo are developing other part of Nigeria, which we are also told is our country too and you are not happy about it and according to you, you want them to go home and that is a fact in your estimation. Where is home exactly? Cameroon or Gabon if I amy ask you?

How much did OBJ and his inept govt spent junketing the globe trying as they say, to bring investors? But here you are, Igbos investing in the same country you killed them in order that they should be part of it and you are not happy too. Tell me any rich nation today or in the ancient past that had created their world sitting at home? Is it the the Greeks, Babylonians, Roman, British Empire or more recently Americans, Chinese or even the Japanese.

Igbos are too wise and sophsiticated to sit at home, if there is anywhere in the world money is there t o make, like the Americans, Chinese, British, recently Indian are doing, we will be there including your own towns and villages. Bob Marley told his enemies once that they will be tired to see his face.
When you forcefully brought us back into Nigeria, probably you didn't realise what you are letting yourselves into. From 1970, we resoved that we will use our business acumen but legal or underhand to conquere Nigeria and that is exactly what we are doing. If you don’t like it, call referendum tomorrow.

If you don't like it too, blame your fathers for fighting against Biafra and forcing us back into Nigeria. You can’t beat a child and also push the child not to cry.
When El Rufai was sounding alarm to his masters indirectlly without being asked that Igbos now owe 70% of Abuja, he knows exactly what he was doing because no one asked him for that statistics. As long we are part of that Geographical statement called Nigeria, we will be in your faces whether you like it or not because you asked for it and now got it. No amount of backmail of go and develop your home own towns will change anything.
Its funny you don't tend to tell or even call on South African telecom companies now busy looting Nigeria to go back to South Africa or the oil companies but you are telling a citizen of a country to go back to where you never told us.

We are going nowhere very soon. If you wonder how we spend the cash, please come to the East during festive seasons. i think that will even make you to jump into the River Niger on your way back.

The bolded statement magnifies your inherent stupidity and shows the no-ending empty exaggerations associated with the stock of people that gave rise to you. The closet Awo came to building Lagos was that the city is part of Yoruba land by nature. By the period Lagos was designated as nation’s capital, the city was jealously controlled by the federal government through FCT ministers and they were mostly Fulani or Hausa.

AG or even Akintola’s NNDP never had control of Lagos. The first party named NNDP under the leadership of Macaulay lost the Lagos town council election in 1934/38 to YMN led by Ernest. Okoli. By this time Awo, a street money changer, was a political tug.

It is very funny and intellectually laughable to read all forms of hyperbolic statements about Awo’s achievement including the alleged building of Lagos. The only city Awolowo had power to build anything is Ibadan and I am not surprised that the city’s name does not feature prominently in your misguided and lofty scheme of grandeur.

Let me inform your lazy arse that the only infrastructure or corporation that should be created to Awolowo’s western region of Nigeria was the formation of WNDC. Believe me; the laurels of WNDC can be counted on your five fingers.
This has got to be the lousiest and unintelligent rubbish I've ever read.

Babapupa, I'm happy you understand, but I would like to say that I do think your view of the Igbo thinking of themselves as superior is likely a misinterpretation of the Igbo viewing themselves as not being synonymous with other groups. The Igbo don't think themselves as better or superior. Rather, they just don't see themselves as being synonymous with others. Even between and among the various Igbo groups, there is emphasis on Igbo heterogeneity.  It isn't a matter of superiority.

My Earnest Opinion.
I can't help but admire your sense of honesty and pragmatism. The fact is, it's one thing to exude and convey pride which is perfectly ok, it's another to needlessly trash and belittle other people, especially when the so called other people are really not beneath you, in fact and in some cases and areas, they are above you.

Ilasamaja-Isolo Industrial Estate — in which steel and aluminum products, furniture, concrete, clothing, plastics, textiles, beverages and shoes are produced.

And we still have Apapa, Amuwo, Isolo and Ikorodu industrial estates.

Nothing corky about hard facts my friend,

Democracy in Nigeria is non existence
What a bunch of jokers . . .
Same FOI bill is getting passed this year in Lagos.

We don't need the military to do the right thing, we just have bad people running things.

This is statement born out of ignorance, arrant stupidity and drunken stupor. I think the Ndigbo would want to standup a competing city to Lagos if the federal government would spend this same amount of money sunk into Lagos as federal capital on any city in Igbo land as federal capital city.
The federal government did not build any of the industrial complexes in Lagos, Awolowo did when he was the premier of the western region and the complexes remains the main industrial engines in Nigeria and Lagos was a thriving community before any federal set up.

And I dare you to name anything that was built in the eastern region that's still standing today, that's if anything was ever built anyways. Were Igbo people not in charge of the eastern region.

My friend, arrant stupidity and drunken stupor is the other way around because you're casting your net against real brick and mortar facts, not den say or hand me down. You can not always sidetrack facts with trashy English words, it only makes you sound delusional and ignorant.

Is it even possible to compete with Lagos when your people are not even in Igboland, when they're not even  doing anything in Igboland, when your leaders have mansions and business in Lagos and anywhere but Igboland. Who are you fooling for real? How and with what are you going to compete with?

You really need to quit surfing so hard on emotions and calm down, Yoruba people or any other group are the least of your worries, your worries are at home.

As I stated earlier, the Igbo know what they want and they pursue it. The problem (if it really can be considered as such given the circumstance) is that they do not pursue it for the benefit of the Igbo. Rather, they only pursue it for the benefit of their nuclear and extended family, and not the Igbo at large. I'm not disagreeing with you, though, in respect to Igbo areas needing further development, because I really do feel that it's high time the Igbo, in general, give as much attention as they can to their respective regions of Igboland. Instead, all I want to get you to understand is that the Igbo don't work for the benefit of the Igbo. They just don't.
I truly understand your summation and realistically, we all have our shortcomings regardless. What I don't get is the need for some folks within the Igbo community to needlessly throw trash at other people, claim they are better than other people and blame other people for problems within their borders, problems we all know their leaders help created and the same leaders are part of the rot and decay federally.

The blind and foolish arrogance is not only ridiculously stupid, it's dangerously distracting and doesn't translate to any thing on the ground , especially when we all know the facts.

Yoruba people sure have their own problems, but I don't see them running around blaming the moon and sun for their problems, yelling every day and night that they are better than other people, that without Yoruba people other folks are doomed.

Agreed, people have every right to talk trash as much as they want, just be mindful that other people have the same right to respond adequately because this nonsense has been going or like for ever and you sit on your hands and ignore because you don't want to sound tribal. The fact at this point is, no falsehoods and trash is sliding by unchallenged as far as I'm concerned, enough is enough.

I just think some Igbo folks should be able to curb their insecurities and coexist peacefully without the childish desire to make stupid claims about some delusional and unfounded superiority.
