I asked for a suggestion. Criticism is easy.
I didn't want to have to say this because Nigerians hate hearing the truth but you force my hand. The problem with the forex exchange market is the same trouble that plagues the entire country. Nigeria is just too corrupt for anything to work. What you all are experiencing right now is a culmination of half a century of bad governance and worse still, bad citizenry. There is nothing that can be done unless there is a fundamental shift in the way Nigerians think and do business. A nation can never thrive when they are at a level of corruption that Nigeria is. Haven't you noticed that not one, not two, but every single facet of life in Nigeria does not function? That is not a coincidence. You all might as well sit back and enjoy the hellish ride.

Everyday I hear the central bank doesn't know what it is doing.

What exactly do you want it to do?

As long as Nigerians keep importing everything from toothbrush to Brazilian hair the value of Naira would always fall. This would sometimes need intervention from the Apex bank.

Please suggest what you would have done otherwise.
That is a dumb question to ask. You might as well ask me to splint a compound fracture. You know they don't what they are doing because the forex situation I'm Nigeria is getting worse. It is no different than when America had it's last recession and they knew what they were doing.

It shouldn't, let the market forces determine it. When more Nigerians get engaged in non-oil exports as against wholesale imports, the foreign exchange market will experience some form of stability.
It is their job to intervene. It is just that Nigeria's central bank does not know what it's doing. Every central bank in the world intervenes in it's foreign exchange.

Quakertellicus1:
Good points.

But most Nigerians told ASUU to stop going on strike in 2013....a strike which was all about getting more funding for the Universities. We told them to go home and rest , that they ASUU are part of the problem (partly true).

So ASUU went home and rested.

Also when Fashola increased fees for LASU, we told him that we are all poor and we cannot afford high fees. So, the fees were reduced, and we all rejoiced over how we put one over those ''greedy politicians '' (They are greedy too, by the way).

And as a result our universities are starved of funds. Meaning that our universities cannot attract world class research and world class funding and world class clout...even world class lecturers...which means they remain perpetually broke....with funding not up to 5 million dollars US

Meanwhile, unis like Yaradua London almamater get funding to the tune of billions of dollars US.No wonder the rich and even some of the poor are running out.

Yes, our leaders should have done well. I am not disputing that. But Nigerians should realize too that education cannot be free of charge. If you insist on paying less than 1000 dollars US for school fees every year...that is what you get. Poorly funded degrees.
Guy, I like you too much. Nigerians love to throw blame around for their condition but forget that they are the architect of their own dilemma and troubles. I have another scenario for you;

A danfo driver is stopped by the police at a checkpoint demanding for 20 naira bribe. The driver refuses to the ire of the bus occupants. The occupants of the bus starts urging the driver to "settle am abeg make we go". Abi i lie? Does this sound like a people who want to do things differently or want a better life for themselves?

I just can't understand Nigerians. Knowledge is a problem even when the means of getting it is widely available. Another problem is they are too used to what i call "the suffer condition" too easily. How can you have a coup in;

1. 1966. Twice

2. 1975.

3. 1976.

4. 1983.

5. 1990.

6. 1993. . . . . . .And still believe Nigeria would thrive. With all this, some people actually believe that Nigeria was great and that things were ok in the country. How is this possible? There are even people today who say GEJ was a wonderful president and that things were great during his presidency. Another symptom of the suffer condition. One of the most incompetent leaders we ever had is widely praised as a "great man". Nigerians truly deserve the condition they are in today. I swear. Smh.

Please go ahead
italkmoses:
“For the sake of this article, a formal certificate is considered as the certificate obtained from a tertiary institution; whether Universities, Polytechnics, Monotechnics or other higher institutions of learning”.

Our country has evolved. She is still evolving. She has evolved in almost every sector. She has evolved into a tragic bad on one part and an astonishingly advanced enclave on the other part. The interest of this article pertains to the evolvement between our formal certificates and their relationship with guaranteed meal tickets.

There has been an age long debate that cuts across many generations in this country about whose generation is Nigeria better or worse. Some commentators proposed that the 1960s’, 1970s’, and 1980s’, Nigeria was the best. Younger generations said the 1990s and 2000s’ is better. Whatever indices must have been used to reach both conclusions will suffice for another fresh article. But I want to focus on what formal certificates meant between the earlier generations and what obtains in today’s reality.

It was my dad that told me about how first degree graduates were treated in the 60’s, 70’s and even early 80’s. You may have been told similar stories of how graduates got cars upon graduation, white collar jobs were already waiting for them to graduate amongst several other pecks that seems unbelievable in today’s reality. In those days, all you needed to liberate yourself and your family from sheer poverty and consuming despondency was a degree from a tertiary institution. Your degree or certificate was the ticket and the only ticket you needed to transfer from lack to plenty, from have-not to have. I once attended a course on Facilities Engineering, Operations and Maintenance Management and the facilitator corroborated my dad’s tale to me, he was a beneficiary of the account my dad told me. Engr X (name withheld), a graduate of University of Ibadan, in the department of chemical engineering in 1978, before he was shortlisted for NYSC, already had a job waiting in Shell, where he eventually worked for 33years before voluntarily resigning as a Lead Projects Engineer. This is only one out of several other examples. These kinds of stories were popular until the 90s’.

Then, something happened! Something that is better imagined than described. This thing that happened will suffice for a PhD thesis if you want to undertake a study on it. Let’s not go into that story.

These pecks and assurances of securing white collar jobs started fading away like a diffusing flame, thousands of graduates now have to write application letters, converge at stadiums to write aptitude tests for fifteen (15) vacant positions, amongst other unspeakable tendencies. More unfortunately is that the trend deteriorates every other day. A close comparism on what is obtainable between then and now reveals that the distance between the experience then and now can be liken to the distance between heaven and earth. Honestly, it is that far! Hence, when people argue on what use their formal certificates are if they can’t get a job with them in their own country; I listen along with a heavy heart, worried about the imminent consequence of this quagmire. This may be a title for another piece.

However, are formal certificates still guaranteed meal tickets? I will answer Yes without batting an eyelid. Are formal certificates a deceptive illusion? I will not answer No.

Firstly, jobs are still available even though they are only a few vacancies that will never go round. Hence, to the graduates or applicants who eventually get employed, the certificates have paid off. There are several ‘fortunate’ graduates whose stories support this claim. Recall that without the certificate, you do not qualify to contest in the first place. However, it is also not incorrect to say they are a deceptive illusion. This is evident in the thousands of graduates that are roaming the streets or under-employed and waiting for their miracle day, if it will ever come. This is then a two way bridge, one is wider, while the other; slender like the biblical road that leads to heaven.

What is the way to go?

Whether or not the job comes, education shouldn’t be replaced with anything. Going to school should be non-negotiable especially if you have the capacity to. Going by the current reality of this generation, disabuse your mind from considering formal certificates as the only guaranteed meal ticket. Having established that, re-adjust your mindset to be open to all options. After graduation, if the job comes; lucky you. If it doesn’t, re-strategize. There are several other options you can consider. Learn a skill; go into business (if you can), deliberately develop your gifts and passion. The education you have acquired puts you in a better position to organize your life. Start something, grow it and move your life on.

Speak for yourself. Let me ask you a question. People die everyday driving cars. Does that stop you from wearing a seat belt and driving one? No. All you can do is to do the right thing by doing all you can to be safe while operating one. Yes, some men will cheat irrespective of how beautiful their wives are, but that does not mean you should not do what you can to keep the flame alive in your relationship. Mercy Aigbe is being smart. At least she is doing all she can in her own capacity to keep her man interested. You might wanna change that mentality.

The main reason Nigeria has deteriorated to this level is because it's citizens refuse to accept the glaring truth. Here's some of them;

1. Nigeria will be GREAT again. As if the country was ever great.

2. Nigeria is not fantastically corrupt. Even with youtube evidence of Policemen and Soldiers extorting money from citizens shamelessly and publicly.

3. Buhari destroyed the economy. Forgetting that Nigeria has been like this since independence.

And this goes on and on.
