We'll Not Persecute Suspected Boko Terrorists, Says Justice Binta Nyarko


Justice Binta Nyarko, head of the team of judges in charge of the Federal Government's efforts to prosecute suspected Boko Haram terrorists in detention across the country, has assurances that the suspects will enjoy fair hearing and the team's assignment will be speedily executed by the four syndicated courts handling the cases.              

This was disclosed in a press statement issued by Mr. Salihu Othman Isah, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Attorney- General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami.  According to the statement issued on Monday, Justice Nyarko gave the assurances while addressing the maiden sitting of the courts at Wawa Military Cantonment, Kainji, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

She equally stated that the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation should have invited the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to witness the proceedings. Justice Nyarko was quoted to have said the four judges to whom the cases have been assigned will exclusively focus on the cases for now and pledged that none of the suspects will face persecution during the trials.        

“We are here to ensure that nobody is persecuted. We are here for prosecution and so we have come with open minds. We have been assigned to these cases and we have no other jobs for now.Though, this is not a regular set up of a court, however, we shall make do with what we have. I think the Federal Ministry of Justice should have invited the National Human Rights Commission to witness the proceedings here. I hope it will do so in subsequent ones. We shall be here till whatever time we close, even till 7pm every day until we dispense of the cases. So, let’s hit the ground running,” she said.

Justice Nyarko, who operated from Court 1, began the sitting at 1.35pm after leading the team of judges, prosecutors from the Federal Ministry of Justice and the defence team from the Legal Aid Council on an inspection tour of the facility at about 12.30pm. After the visit, the judges headed to their respective chambers to prepare for the cases.

Justice Nyarko thanked everyone associated with the process, especially the military, for their contribution in ensuring that the trials take place. Earlier, Mrs. Nkiruka Jones-Nebo, leader of the Federal Government prosecutors and Head of Complex Case Work Group (CCWG) in the Department of Public Prosecution of the Federal Ministry of Justice, said the arraignment of the suspects is a major milestone. She thanked the judiciary for releasing the four judges to handle the trials.

Mrs. Jones-Nebo, who spoke on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF), Mr. Muhammad Umar Etsu, also thanked the military authorities for keeping the detainees in their facilities in good condition.

“I trust that the Legal Aid Council is in tune with the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation to see that the cases are not only expeditiously dispensed with, but be seen to be just and fair. We shall do a good job and we shall be seen to prosecute and not to persecute,” she said.

Mr. Achi Joseph Ayok, Director, Civil Justice at the Legal Aid Council, thanked the Attorney-General of the Federation for accommodating the council in the trial of the suspected terrorists. Mr. Ayok spoke on behalf of the Director-General, Legal Aid Council, Mrs. Joy Bob-Manuel.

The Deputy Commander of Giwa Project, Wawa Cantonment, Major E.B. Totoh, gave the total number of suspects in custody at the Giwa Facility as 1,669.

These, he said, include 1,631 adult males, 11 adult females, 26 male minors and one female minor.

The first day of the sitting closed at 7pm with about 13 cases heard.

Biafra: Boycotting Anambra election our last push to achieving referendum – IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has said that boycotting the Anambra governorship election is the only card left for its members and Biafrans living in the state to demonstrate their resolve for a referendum.

A press release by the group signed by its publicity secretary, Mr Emma Powerful stated that IPOB members in Biafraland would boycott the Anambra, November 18, 2017 gubernatorial election, describing it as the day of destiny for all lovers of freedom.

The release stated that, “Every genuine Biafran desiring of freedom for Biafra from this Islamic bondage of Hausa Fulani caliphate called Nigeria, must not only stay at home on that day, but must also make sure those around them do not vote. November 18, 2017 is a date with history.

“If we Biafrans succeed in demonstrating before international observers that we are serious about our freedom by locking down Anambra State on that day, the world will be in no doubt that Biafra is unstoppable. Our destiny is firmly in our hands.

“We must teach corrupt Igbo politicians that money cannot buy IPOB because we are special breed untainted by the corrupt tendencies of Nigerian politics. Locking down Anambra State will pave the way for IPOB to announce a date for substantive referendum later next year with or without the approval of Nigeria.”

The group said that events in Catalonia and Kurdistan “has pointed the way forward for it because it was clearly demonstrated by both nations that IPOB can call for and conduct its own referendum with or without the cooperation of Nigeria.”

It said that election boycott “is the only legitimate tool left in the hands of oppressed people to register their displeasure with the ongoing genocide, arbitrary arrests and torture across Biafraland.”

It added that the whole world was watching to see how serious the group was towards the realisation of Biafra, and that the successful boycott of the election will prove to the entire world how determined they were towards having their own nation.

“We are therefore asking every Biafran and IPOB member who believe in the supremacy of the restoration of Biafra over deceitful game of Nigerian politics to sit at home and not venture outdoor on the 18th November 2017 no matter the amount of threat.

“IPOB under the supreme command and leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is determine to show the world how serious we are towards the restoration of Biafra. Come the 18th of November, the world will know that Biafrans cannot participate in a fraudulent election organised by those that came to our land, killed us and when we complained, they tagged us terrorists.

“We must remain strong and resolute before our enemies as our leader taught us. He have come too far to allow propaganda and blackmail to derail us. As the blessed children of the Most High, it is our duty to let the world know that terrorists don’t vote,”‎ it stated.

It might be noise making to you but we don't view it as such. This lifestyle is embedded in our genes and there is nothing anyone can do about it. The best thing you have to do iis to mind your business. It's not an insult but an advice.

Igbos always claim they are being victimized and marginalized, but they are the ones who invite disdain on themselves from other tribes with their unnecessary loudness. Every tribe in Nigeria has people trailblazing across the globe, but you don't hear them bitching about it like the Igbos. You guys have a lot to learn.

Igbos hold in high esteem those who make them proud so that they can keep it on, and also for others to sit up. Only Igbos understand what this kind of attainment of great height does in their lives.
