A just released Wikileaks cable shows that Nigeria's former Chief Justice, Muhammadu Uwais,
was so highly fearful of President Olusegun Obasanjo’s interference with the judiciary that in
2005, he sought a meeting with the new American ambassador, Mr. John Campbell, so that
"someone knows what is happening here" in case something happened to him.

Mr. Uwais told Mr. Campbell that he and other Supreme Court justices were experiencing
"pressure and harassment" from President Obasanjo because the presidency was concerned
that the court might not “do his bidding” beginning with complicated effort of James Ibori,
the Delta State governor, to run for the governorship again in 2003 against the background
of his alleged conviction for stealing roofing materials years earlier.

At a point in the complicated process that involved all kinds of interests and political manoevres,
Justice Uwais told Mr. Campbell that the Ibori case had been followed by attempts to deposit large
sums of money into his bank account in order to implicate him.

As the legal challenge against President Obasanjo by the ANPP’s General Muhammadu Buhari
over abuse of security forces, lapses in voting procedures and other elements of the severely
flawed 2003 elections of Obasanjo’s election by drew to a close in 2005 with the Supreme Court
gearing up to announce its decision, pressure on the judiciary and other participants mounted.

Mr. Uwais told Ambassador Campbell that attempts had been made to bribe, blackmail, intimidate
and threaten him.

Despite that, the Chief Justice stressed he would see the process through and that had never
considered walking away from the challenge.

Expressing his personal evaluation of the candidates, he characterized Buhari as "honest, hardworking
and sincere," and told the ambassador that Buhari would eliminate corruption.

But he criticized Buhari for having an "ineffective campaign organization," observing that he was too
loyal to those who had helped him in the past and reluctant to dismiss some who were detrimental to his efforts."

Justice Uwais characterized Obasanjo as "mean, insincere and not trustworthy," a man who would turn
on anyone for petty personal reasons." he said, and continued that Obasanjo was "increasingly addicted
to the office of the Presidency."

Although Justice Uwais also observed that Obasanjo was almost "completely out of touch" with the
thoughts and needs of Nigeria, he observed that he had at least appointed some advisers with credentials
even if their actions and motives were suspect."

It s so amazing that very few people know this and even arsenal fans still do not realise how much the debt incured from the construction of the emirate stadium has really constrained Wenger from spending much on buying players.

My friend's dad closed is morgue business because the spirit of a man who died angry refused to rest in peace because he felt cheated to death. Uromi (Edo State) : The police in Edo have arrested a pastor who allegedly
raped a 12-year-old choir member of his church at Afuda-Uromi, Esan North East
Local Government Area of the state.

The incident incurred the wrath of some residents around the area, who destroyed
some church equipment, while the pastor was detained at the Uromi Police Divisional headquarters.

Narrating her ordeal to newsmen on Thursday, the rape victim said she had
gone to church for choir rehearsals when the incident occurred.

She said she and three other children were in the church, awaiting the arrival of
other members, when the pastor and founder of the church drove into the premises
in his Mercedes Benz car, and started enquiring about their names.


She said after they had given their names, the pastor called her into his office and asked her to sit on his laps.


While on his laps, the victim alleged that the pastor began to suck her breast and dipped his finger into her private part.


She added that she felt severe pains in her stomach, and consequently struggled to regain her freedom.


The incident, she alleged, also caused her to bleed as a result of the injuries she sustained.


The father of the victim, Mr Lawrence Okoduwa, an operator of a rental service, told newsmen
that he and his family became members of the church barely two months ago.

He noted with regret that joining the church had caused him pains, because he never
expected that his daughter could undergo such unfortunate experience.

Okoduwa appealed to government and the police to ensure that justice was done
in the case to serve as a deterrent to other randy pastors.

He alleged that the suspect, who told him he was merely carrying out deliverance
on his daughter, was arrested and later released on bail by the police.

The Chairman, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Esan North East Local Government
Area chapter, Rev. Francis Okhai, confirmed that the matter had been reported to the PFN,
to which the alleged rapist pastor belongs.

He said several cases of misconduct had earlier been reported against the pastor, but that
it was the first time that allegation of rape was reported.

Okhai added that disciplinary action would be taken against the pastor if found wanting “in
the abominable act, because the PFN does not condone any misconduct from its members”.

He said the pastor had, however, denied the allegation when questioned by some PFN officials.

The Divisional Police headquarters at Uromi, a police officer, who pleaded anonymity,
confirmed the arrest of the pastor. (NAN)
