dabossman: Unfortunately, this is not going to happen. The University is considered a place for YOUNG ADULTS who are expected to be responsible for themselves. No university is going to spoon-feed young adults. You must be able at that stage to submit your correct high school results/transcript. The university will not be liable for your naivety. Guy, this is not about spoon-feeding. This is about doing things the right way. Let's not bend the issue at hand. A university does not base admissions decisions on assumptions. It bases them on hard facts. And the most robust ways to get hard facts is to get them from the horses mouth, the examining bodies. Bro, not sure, but I hope this is not what you are arguing sha. Because that would mean it is fine that our universities, even the very best ones by naija standards, remain at the very bottom of the barrel in the admissions process. I rate IFE really high, that is why I'm providing such sensible suggestions. A university that has class cannot base admissions decisions on assumptions. It is clear that this one was based on assumptions that turned out untrue - on both parties' angle. IFE has fault here, just as the naive student has fault. Who is supposed to be more sensible in academic matters? 17 year old or an institution that has been around for close to 50 years and parades some of the best profs in the country and perhaps in Africa? Can't believe we are debating this. |

dabossman: You don't seem to understand the process clearly yet. Let me try and help.
The total admission quota for Medicine in OAU is 100, and that includes UTME and Direct Entry).
In other words, there are only 100 slots available. But all 100 slots are not available to her. She must be part of the best 45. Why?
1. Admission into Nigerian Universities are considered on three grounds based on the nationally specified criteria (which I think ought to be reviewed now, by the way): A. Merit =45% (This covers all candidates from the country - and it is automatic admission once you meet the cut-off mark) B. Catchment = 35% (this refers to those in the states specified as catchment area for each University: For OAU, that is Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Osun and Ekiti) C. Educationally disadvantaged states (ELDS)=20% = This refers to all the 19 Northern States, and Ebonyi, Rivers and Bayelsa.
This means that if a student from any of the catchment states or ELDS scores a similar mark or even lower to hers, but meet the required cutoff for the course, they will gain admission before her.
So in truth the young lady was vying for one of the 45 slots open to candidates chosen on merit, not one of the entire 100 slots available. She only stood a 45% chance of gaining admission for that course in Ife.
It's not an ideal system, but it is what has obtained for decades. Maybe someday it will be changed. Guy, your bolded statement is not wrong. She indeed had only a chance with merit. The problem with this whole process is that both parties made too much assumptions which turned out to not hold water. It's unbelievable that IFE made admissions decision based on assumptions, that's the point. Read my previous answers if you have not. |

Vcojuro: @ Mr bashir
chairman publish the admission list of your school and I will believe you. No need to argue, at least let everyone knows that your provost is saying the truth. We are in the information age. We want to know if oau really comply with the admission rules and regulations.
University of Ibadan releases the name of every admitted students and jamb registration no, each year on their website and in newspapers.
So I can't see why oau is different, is the provost afraid of releasing the list, at least oau is a public institution, a federal one for that matter.
People are saying something about oau and yet the provost can't defend the integrity of the school by publish the admission list.
At least the young lady has come out and she uploaded her her results on the social media, the provost should do likewise and upload his own list simple.
Whenever the police is accusing you of a crime you didn't commit, then you bring forth your evidence that will exonerate you.
I am tired of hearing the provost said this, the provost said that, the provost is nice, the provost is that.
We need evidence to show that the girl didn't deserve a spot on the admission list.
The evidence is for someone to paste the list of admitted students in the department of Medicine and their respective score Guy, the provost's arguments are insightful and compelling. The problem is that they make a hasty assumption to reach their conclusions. That is the problem. A big school like IFE can't continue this way, and that is the fact. You don't base admissions decisions on assumptions. NO, that's not done. |

Phi001: Or that the additional course was registered but not written.
Besides, she wrote 9 subjects. Why she submitted 7 is beyond me...and I'm sure she submitted 7 because if she submitted all 9 and only 7 were included in her transcript, she would've complained.
It's not a calculation of what she made in her waec but what she submitted.
Perhaps, you've not seen her transcript. What you submit is what is calculated for you.
The fact that she's not new yo the system doesn't mean she couldn't have made a mistake. You're firmly certain that the provost/OAU is to blame...but analyse again.
Admission process is now different.
If she submitted more than seven but only seven were accredited to her, she would've have complained.
Her transcipt's?
I think universities now have more authority to exercise in admission process. All thanks to this ranking of a thing. So if 8 subjects are required and only 7 are submitted, she has herself to blame.
There was this one time when I was in SSS2, Chemistory exam I think. 4 theory questions, 25 marks each, 40 objective questions. I forgot to answer one theory question and I lost 12.5% for that singular mistake. In fact, I argued with my teacher until he showed me my mistake. That's the point bro. You can see for yourself that the admissions process was based on hasty assumptions that turned out to not hold water and unfortunately destroyed the chances of this brilliant girl. To avoid such stories, the universities should get the grades from the examining bodies. Simple. And then do whatever GPA calculus they want to do..Not put the weight on naive 17 year olds who may think they are being smart but are actually acting foolishly. IFE should learn from this..I will definitely send this advice to the professor himself, with the required respect and humility. |

dabossman: How is it nonsense? The explanation makes sense, and this has even been happening for years. The fact that you ran sub-9 seconds in the Olympics 100m does not automatically guarantee you a bronze medal, not to talk of gold. If others ran a faster time than use, even by a millisecond, you'll go home empty handed.
No one is saying there may not be "backdoor", padi-padi arrangements for some people. However, the explanation given is very logical. Young people should learn from it in making their choices of course and university of study. Guy, the point remains that IFE made assumptions that turned out to not be true. I initally wanted to ignore this matter, but as I see posts coming in, I decided to write more..How can a university base admissions decisions on assumptions? Is IFE not supposed to be top school and so make a more informed admissions decision by real verification from direct source? Why the double standards, why did they expect direct scores from JAMB but not direct scores from WAEC. At the bare minimum, what stops them from telling students to buy scratch cards and checking all the students' results from which to base their admissions decision. See, I have thought about this matter left and right and if IFE is aspiring to get to above its current reputation, it cannot handle admissions decision this way. Get students' performances from the source and base your decisions on the results from the horses mouth. |

I forgot to answer one theory question and I lost 12.5% for that singular mistake. In fact, I argued with my teacher until he showed me my mistake. Guy, in a more robust system, admissions decisions can never be based on results submitted by students. The school has its blame and the students also has blames. The school made assumptions that turned out to not hold water. If you disagree with this, read your post again where you said 'the student registered for the subject but didn't take it'. That is a weak assumption to base important admissions decision on. It is clearly weak and I wait for a sensible argument to show it's not weak. A more robust process will never allocate admissions this way. See, I'm holding IFE to this high standards because it is supposed to be a top school in Nigeria and aspiring to be tops in the world. You don't assume to admit students. You verify claims before admitting students. |

BlueWizAngel: I don't know how the school did it, but am not sure they showed them the working for their calculations. But I know they showed them an aggregrate score, now she wouldn't know the number of subject they used to arrive at that score. Hence her lamentation. I guess. That's my point. The admission and GPA computation seem unclear. She submitted 7 subjects but they divided by 8, openly assuming she did the 8th subject and scored an F. |

Tstone1: You see some people that has never been to OAU or at one time or the other denied admission throwing the first stone. We are talking about OAU here and medicine for that matter. That was the conclusion of the analysis and it's such a great one from the provost. I saw the thread this morning and I knew there would be response (quick and articulate one) for that matter!
See, let's learn to always know that although it's a faceless forum but we have people here. You can't be emotional about this. For the fact that you were denied admission does not translate to nepotism or the school being bias. The provost made mention of the merit, catchment and the educational less developed states: These are long time criteria for any reasonable federal institution in NIGERIA. I was denied admission then in OAU and then I tried again! Now it all a bye gone looking back after 5 years.
My advice to the applicant(s); don't get carried away with the social media! You're too young for that. I became active on Nairaland after my first degree so you had better face your academics for now.
Don't stop trying, I wish you the very best in your pursuit of a great and excellent career!!! Oga, I agree with some of your point, but for this girl matter, her achievements are not gotten by spending hours on social media. May be you are referring to some other people, definitely not her. Her achievements are not made with her brain by doing social media in the way you have portrayed it. In my days, which was about roughly 16 years ago, one would be near genius level to perform at her overall level. |

BraniacX: No, but her submitting nly seven subjects has not been proven Even if she submitted only 7 subjects but submitted more than the required 5 o'level subjects as required by JAMB, she would have to make an F in the 8th subject for it to be used to compute her overall O'level GPA. I have told that to OGA pHi001 and even used example of real university courses. |

tobiasbeecher: Your explanation is filled with arrogance and half truth. What makes OAU a top rated university as you arrogantly alluded to? Are they among the top 20 universities in Africa? What makes them top rated? What breakthrough in medicine or Engineering have they recorded in recent years? Since you saw that she did well why can't you offer her alternatives? Must she come to social media before you people do what's right? This is how you people have killed meritocracy and enthrone mediocrity in all sectors in this shambolic country! The worst tragedy (that's even bigger than what you did to the young girl) is you arrogantly saying that OAU is a top rated university. Mr provost, please fear God. BraniacX: I have been around my friend though i don't expect you to take my word for this, the examples you gave do not invalidate my statistics. Yes i said ife was an institution affected by tribalism but i also said it was less so compared to majority of the schools around Nigeria and i used uniben as a gold standard of some sort not because it is totally detribalised or because i studied there but because in comparism to other schools i've been to, uniben and unilag are the most diverse ethnically, unilag for obvious reasons, uniben for the fact that their merit list remains untainted by any other consideration to the best of my knowledge (I can still be proven wrong of course). In my time i applied to ife and uniben in different years and gained admission into different courses in both, i turned down a couple of admissions in my time because maybe i was a bit conceited and arrogant believing i was very brilliant and admissions came to me easier than other people or because i was kind of pampered and sheltered with my parents more invested in me going to school than i was but point is, during the admissions search i got around and though uniben was never my choice, i was basically bribed/coerced to take up that admission and i look back at my wasted years with regrets i also got to learn about many back doors to gaining admission into Nigerian universities and i'm saying point blank that there's tribalism in ife's admission, at least there was back then Guy, abeg make una forget about this off topic and face issue at hand. Phi001: Someone did mention that they were asked to submit their O'level results. The girl submitted only 7. Perhaps she assumed that Painting and Civic Education as subjects would be irrelevant. So IFE also assumed she made an F in the last subject and hence they used it to compute her O'level GPA? No? See my above post to Phi001. The admission process has lots of weaknesses and loopholes and I say this with all due respect to the respectable people in charge |
Education › Re: Provost Of Health Sciences Oau Gives Reasons Why Mrs Aror Wasnt Admitted by baum1: 2:11am On Dec 23, 2016 |
Phi001: Let's use a practical example here...
In a semester, if you aim for a 5.0 GPA and get As in 7 courses instead of 8, will the last course be rendered invalid to ensure you attain that perfect GPA? No, but you must also take the last course and earn a ZERO=F for the course to be used to divide your GPA. We have all seen instances where people in the same class did different number of courses...Some did 7, some did 8 and some did 9..If you divide the GPA of someone that did 7 by 8 or 8 by nine, you would be assuming they did the additional course and failed, and that is wrong. There is definitely an issue with what IFE has done. I cannot see why there is no issue. They have assumed the girl took the 8th subject and failed and hence they divided by 8. That is wrong! If anything, the computation should be based on 5 relevant subjects because this is what I suppose JAMB explicitly has in its brochure... |

sirmose: You are damn wrong as the OAU you thought to have known has just disappointed you with wrong computation. How do you explain the repeating of physics twice but single counting? Where is her eighth subject? With the eighth subject assuming a score of C, she should have a total of 50, instead of 44. That is, 78.13%. Plus the 80% in UTME, divided by 2, she should have an average of 79%, which qualifies her for admission under merit. The so called highly rated OAU has crashed the supposedly howbeit self-acclaimed high standard. Knowing this now, are you not disappointed? OAU remains high standards, at least by naija standards, no one can take that from them. But this mistake, once established, we must publicize it. Have you sent a message to the prof by facebook. Phi001: 1. They were asked to submit their best 8 subjects and she submitted 7, resulting to her 45/64
2. According to the professor's calculations, which are correct by the way, she fell short of the cut off.
3. The system of admission has changed. Back in the day, you merely needed to get above the cut off in jamb and get 5 credits(including English and Maths) in SSCE, but the system is quite different now.
Need I say more? Bro, this is spot on and clears the air, thanks. Admission process in somewhat weak (I don't want to use condescending word against the great IFE) and both parties are to blame..Isn't the school supposed to request the candidates O'level results which normally should show all of the subjects done and grades obtained? Why submit 7, 8 or 9. This yields inconsistency which the young lady has fallen in, unfortunately. That was her own mistake, for failing to provide the required number of results that the school required. In a saner and more open scenario, students should be asked to submit their O'level or statement of results, not a part of the results which open room for manipulation or even inconsistency. It would even be much better if the universities can access the scores of these candidates directly from the examining bodies or candidates' schools. This is how it is done in the good universities that OAU is try to become like somebody. Painful, painful, painful. An archaic, inconsistent technique has cost a very brilliant candidate a place that she so much merited. I want to mentor that girl if I have the time and chance. |
