In lagos and U.I yes and to a much lesser extent O.A.U but the rest are largely monoethnic and it is not because of dearth of applications from other ethnic groups, Unillorin is a point in case and this isn't limited to the southwest alone, in the north aside A.B.U the rest are same and that is largely the case in the southeast so i wouldn't even vouch for any school there, Uniben stands out in this case and it is reflected in the number of applications they get from all over Nigeria which is second only to Unillorin for obvious reasons, other schools may have sprinklings of ethnic diversity but not at a level which give it statistical significance and bring notice of it to the forefront.

I as a niger deltan from delta state has equal chances of gaining admission into uniben with you and an edo indegene from benin city in any given course on merit, this is my argument

Mr. Adeseunfat, your coming out to explain this is highly appreciated. But looking through the explanation, it seems there is an error. I think it would be fair if Aror's case is reviewed. It looks like this lady has just been denied an admission unfairly.

We need to all bring the case before the prof..He was nice enough to explain, that was great, something uncommon in naija for some people holding high positions.

Please search his name on facebook, all of you posting here, and send him messages...They will be forced to do something...

Hi, it's possible if she is merit based..45% of the admitted 100 were merit based, meaning 45 people were admitted based on merit. If 56 scored higher than her, then she must be number 101th, which is higher than 103..Though I suspect the 103 might be correct due to approximations.

The prof looks respectable and maybe he isn't really aware of the mistake. I have emailed him and will wait some days for his response, then we proceed with the next steps. How can somebody work that hard and be denied the fruits of her labour, kai!

Guys, I want us to do something about this...Because it appears the school is at fault...Let's not just talk with mouths, let's do something. I have already sent a message to the honourable prof in charge and believe he will respond. Since we have established that the exceptional young student beat the requirement for merit, we need to do something about it.

I am suggesting a public escalation of the matter..In the papers, TV etc until it comes to the notice of the honourable minister of education..This is if the school can not prove sufficiently why the lady was not admitted even when it can be proven that she got above the school's merit cut off.

That was in the 80's and early 90's when they retained true federal character but that is no more, I have attended lectures in southwestern university where lectures were given in english with a smattering of yoruba and i felt the odd man out due to language differences! Bros, the ethnic diversity in the west is greater, for sure...There are more easterners, northerners etc in eastern and northern schools than there are westerners in western schools..

We need to know what the Merit cut off was and whether she beat that merit. Once that is established, the university has to explain! She has no business with catch or ELDS. It is merit she has business with, so we need the merit cut off.

The problem I see here is that someone in OAU calculated the lady's scores wrongly, whether intentionally or mistakenly, but it has cost her an admission. If she had come out earlier, this probably would have been resolved. Mr. Provost, I think Aror's case should be reviewed.

They must own up to their mistake and apologize to the young exceptional girl if they cannot admit her.

How can we post this in the dailies, all dailies, and advertise the issue on Television. Let's push for this young girl. We can do this together. It won't be a burden on each if we come together.

I have personally calculated her points following the provost guidelines and come to the conclusion that she beat the cut off point. This your post dey pain. Kai, I just got reminded of how difficult it is to score 200 in JAMB. Definitely, anything above 250 is a combo of talent, intense, tedious preparation and luck. The thing is really paining me for the girl. I have email the prof sha with the finding that her o'levels were miscalculated. Let's see how it goes.

In my days, schools were only interested in 5 O'level credits, as in C6 minimum, and then meeting JAMB cut-off point. 320 then was reserved for the very best and enabled automatic admission, provided the 5 credits in the required courses were available. Imagine a decade and a half later, someone with such an exceptional background could not get into the same Nigerian university. Na wah ooh.

The truth of the matter is that she isn't the only one in such mess I for instance had310 in jamb and beat the cutoff for med&surg in delsu which is my state but was not offered admission. It's high time all the universities in Nigeria are probed.. Am very sure there are so many of us out there with same problem. I know some people will say go to the school to complain but I know from my time in unizik that going to the school to complain will be futile that is if anyone will even listen to you.

Guy, if you are truthful, post your results like the young girl and we will do follow up.

I am interested in why our excellent students, near geniuses and geniuses are not getting admitted by our good schools in naija, after the students have worked so hard to make elite grades.

If no response, I will now pull strings to ensure we get answers . That get dey too bright to just leave her like that. What, no be the same JAMB wey I know..We she blast na fish. We will hear why they failed to admit her and hopefully the necessary apologies will be provided.

First of all, the provost does not know his basic arithmetic. Those grades he listed amounts to 50 points for 8 subjects. Now he repeated physics (where she scored her lowest) twice instead of adding the 8th subject. So her points should be somewhere above 50, which would give her at least 78.13% for O'level and 80% for UTME. On aggregate with that score, she'd out to score 79% which is above their cut off.

Then he said she ranked 103 on the list of those who chose medicine as first choice (based on her wrongly calculated scores). In the same breath he added that there are 56 candidates who scored higher than her but didn't make the cut-off. So it means they gave admission to the best 46 candidates and handpicked picked 54 others who didn't rank as high as 103.

Shame on this provost who doesn't know basic arithmetic! Shame on these Nigerian universities.

Guy, take am easy. We will follow this up to the best of our abilities. God go help us.

Please read the feedback comments on Nairaland. However, Sir, there are some issues being raised which I'm yet to investigate. It appears in the computation of our O'level GPA, a course was skipped. If this course was considered, it would have brought her overall average to something in the neighbourhood of 79+ which beats the old and new cut off. if only she followed up when she discovered that her name was not on the merit list, she would've bn considered but alas, it's too late now. i'm an alumnus of OAU i tried for three years not because i was too dull but unfortunately i just kept missing the cut off points till i surpassed it the 3rd time. If she scored 320 by her sole effort this year and still wishes to study medicine in OAU, my advice for her is to double her effort in JAMB so as to maintain or better still, surpass her current 320 score. more so, she can take another o'level exam aiming at A1 all through or b2 at worse with this, she should get the required score for medicine next year otherwise, now that she's recognised, she can easily get a less competitive course.

The previous generation which I belong to was really lucky. Imagine people then study the almighty medicine with 5 O'level credits and 260 in JAMB, lol. It does not happen again.

Very insightful indeed. These profs have written so much papers and explained concepts for so many years that they have mastered the art of delivering insightful messages.

I personally contacted the young lady this morning before seeing this. Many young people don't have good advisors. She could have chosen Biochem second choice and maybe try direct entry later. My doctor friend did this. Got around 4.7-4.8 in first year Biochem and simply moved to medicine year 2. Today, he is at the same IFE working as a doctor, graduated couple of years ago from a different uni.

I will recontact the young lady and ask her to retake GCE and WAEC, if she has the chance, and annoyingly get A1 parallel. She has the capacity to do that, she is that good. I gave a similar advice to a girl 11 years ago. Not only did she get all distinctions in her WAEC/abi na GCE, she was subsequently rated based on her the new results, not the old one where she she a combo of A's and C's and B's.

Mhen, IFE parades top, top young students. KAI, more than 50 applications had at least 6 A1. Mhen, these students are bright. I know what it took to get just 1 A1 in those days..Kudos. The current generation is not doomed after all.

Oga/Madam, remove sentiments, the prof's explanations make plenty sense. I didn't know such a new computation existed in IFE. It's really unfortunate that the young lady did so excellently well in JAMB and very good in WAEC, but the combo, though turned out very good, isn't enough to get her into IFE.

Kai, IFE is competitive. Whenever I see the achievements of kids of nowadays, I usually recount how lucky the previous generations are. Take it or leave it, many of us were lucky to attend good naija universities with our 5 C6's and 220 in JAMB.

I agree with your last sentence that both can be combined, that is cerebral capacity and footballing prowess. This is why I disagree with those who push football and relegate quality education. From what I see, it is possible to have star footballer kids who retire at 35, acquire top notch education even up to PhD level by 43, and move into any career of their choice, including football.

Ha bro, very, very, very few average youngsters make it to pro level. I repeat, very very very very very few...The players you see playing in the premier league, whom you refer to as average, were actually some of the very best in their sets...A number of Academies in the UK and France that I know of, they make a mess of averagely talented kids at academies and release them to the world without any hope. If you know the amount of African and even Oyinbo teens and early 20's roaming the streets in France and the UK, with failed football dreams, it's not great..There are several reports on this on the internet. It's very hard life...Of those academies, only the very very very few of the kids make it to the next level. Football, as you know, it is hard to break into the top. As it happens in Naija, the same can be said elsewhere, although at varying degrees..Nowhere guarantees any promise.

Meanwhile, my friend's nephew was playing Sunday football and didn't know that Man City Academy scout was watching him..Just 2 months ago, to the amazement of his mother and everybody, the scout recommended him to the academy. He was tried and found very good and has now been signed by Man City Academy....Of course, I am sure you know that there are hundreds of other kids looking for the same chance..These academies are very hard to enter. Even Eto's son does not play for the top name academies, though he is very talented like his father and has been doing great things.

In general, only 1% or so, I've forgotten the statistics, will eventually make it to a good level in football. Whenever I think of the excellent players who didn't make it, I marvel. The only player I know that made it to some extent in the circle of people I knew in the late 1990's and early 2000's is Yusuf Ayila. I'm sure you have heard about him. He played for Super Eagles and one Ukrainian club like that. The rest, no show..

Anyway sha, I like your belief. Hopefully, this will work for you. My point is just for you to see things from a much wider perspective.
