slimmy05: It's funny how a lot term themselves smart, intelligent, ready for the rigorous stress of masters and still cared to take GRE/SAT /TOEFL?
The last time I did anything relating to maths before GRE was WAEC. I'm pure art student, I used the advantage to ace IELTS 7.5. I didn't do well in GRE Quant 149, but I had the verbal of 157 and awa 4.5. If I find wife I no see wife no be to continue with PhD.
Well, to some it's an escape route to US, and to the serious ones, it's sure an avenue to arm yourself for the bright future ahead. Even if you want to be a care giver in U.S., you need atleast a CNA. Why not take the opportunity and enjoy fully funded Masters of PhD program. My brother some people will see road and still prefer to enter bush. I'm not bothered. Bro Are you close to Memphis, TN? |

Centrix: Some schools, albeit few, admit and fund prospective students based solely on their academic transcripts . Yet others take recommendation letters, publications and research/work experience into consideration.
I've had people tell me they have relatives willing to fund their education abroad if they are able to secure admission. In some cases, those relatives do not want to be involved in the PROCESS of securing the admission. This is a bold faced lie. I know of MFA courses and courses in critical writing and literature where your creative piece and portfolio will speak for you if you're going to be funded. You think these people have funds to dash out. They'll take your transcript from a third world University hook line and sinker without validating it with a general test which is a leveller for everyone in the world? Which is GRE, TOEFL, GMAT etc and still give you funding? Besides those avoiding standardized tests are afraid. That means they aren't even the academically excellent ones with good grades. You can tell. Even after all these they conduct interviews for PhD applicants who are going to be funded to test their spoken English and composure. Some people talk to professors directly to work In their labs sending countless emails and soliciting for spaces and assistantships. You're not talking to novices. In this Era of budget cuts, schools are reserving funds for the best of the best and those who are ready to show excellence. People write GRE three times you know so as to get a high score. On a final note There is no advantage in not writing standardized test. I will still say it. Only a lazy student will choose not to write one. P. S. If you still wish to advice lazy applicants not to take standardized tests, you can create a thread titled " how to get funding without standardized tests. This is real! Tried and tested " I'm sure many people will rush to the red herring. After all many agents still dey hammer on top lazy applicants. |

Centrix: Some people have cogent reasons for not wanting to write standardized tests. Cost is one of them , time's another, just to name a few. Don't be too quick to pass judgement on others especially if you don't know their predicaments You say people don't write test because of costs? Someone that can't afford 40K for GRE will afford 6m for tuition fees right? Because he sure won't get any funding without taking standardized tests. I see your logic right there. |

This GRE thingy is skewed towards engineers.. Lastly, how long did you practise and how many hrs daily Congrats all the same Haha. Actually economists have been shown to get the best GRE scores. They are good in math and they ace the verbal section. Engineering scores are skewed towards high math scores. They perform woefully in the verbal section. |

pumpin26: My interview happened on Monday 6.30am, but I have been busy reason for the delayed transcript. This forum thread has been fantastic and does 50% of the work needed for people to get their visa. The selfless service of gurus and members cannot be ignored. Sometimes their hard or straight talks often cause commotion , but its better they tell us the reality and what is possible than people chasing shadows . bbdd (he packaged and inspired me) and slimmy are often attacked for their straight talks, but these two guys were instrumental to getting my visa. Also, the tendency of people looking for the easiest way out of everything and not doing the necessary diligent home work are the major reasons for many denials. If advice given is followed and tailored to one’s application, then I see no reason why people can’t pick up their visas easily. The job of the VO is to look for reasons to deny people( VOs are doing their jobs), but our job is to not give the VO the chance, and block every loophole possible in our applications and during interviews by preparing for all possible questions. I believe the forum has helped immensely. The visa journey is not smooth, but achievable .
VO: morning ME: morning VO: what school are you heading to? ME: University of Iowa Vo: what program are you going for there? Me: PhD in Health Informatics. VO: How did you get to know about the school ? ME: I did extensive research about schools offering PhD in Health informatics using professional websites like American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) , Health Informatics Forum and other search engines and streamlined programs in clinical informatics and health data analytics. This is in line with my research (…cut ) ( my advice every course has a professional website. Instead of people saying usnews, Princeton etc , that VOs keep hearing daily and I consider cliché. Mention the American professional websites of the course you want to study) VO: why university of Iowa Me: I have a Master’s degree in health informatics and the school is among the top schools offering training in the field of Health informatics. It has an excellent program in health data analytics. VO: you have a masters degree? Me: Yes I have a master’s degree in Health informatics from the University of Leeds Vo : Health informatics and what’s that about? Me: Health informatics is the use of information technology to leverage the delivery of health with the aim of improving the safety, quality and efficiency of heath service delivery..(cut)\ Vo: who is sponsoring you? Me. The school is my sponsor. I am on full funding as stated on the i20. It covers.. tuition…(cut) Vo : Do you have any other document that shows the breakdown of your scholarship other than i20. Me: I gladly gave her my admission letter and I started smiling She had no choice too , but also smiled with the good new Congrats bro. You deserve it. |
