Left for me, it shouldn't have been extended.
Nigerians had from December last year till today.
Is that too short a time?

I bet you some people would still ask for extension on that October deadline. People like you will drown a child for stealing from a pot of soup. Evil wicked soul.

What did our brother obama and the democrates bring to us? Gay marriage. White americans are rascist be they republicans or democrates so u cant single out jux one party. Hahahaha I can't debate with you bro. It's obvious you're speaking with sentiments. No sane black man who LIVES IN America would vote for a party that support the systematic oppression if black folks. Captainswag225: thats why i prefer the republicans to the democrats, they morally better. Democrats in general always sell their soul to the devil, the next republican president will change that stupp1d law. As for africans we never stay united thats why the west dictates for us, have u heard the usa forcing gay freedom on the arabs? No coz they are united unlike africa where some leaders always betray us. Ryt now, gay marriage is legal in s.a, next will be mozambique and that will be how it will spread accross africa. Pls keep quiet Republican party is full of evil people who only care about white interest. Education to them they don't care. They defund it. Womens rights zero. Racism is their best friend. ayzero007: Thanks my people ddluv nd bbdd for your advice. All well and said I still have to give it a try cos people with lower gre than I do got admission with GA. Though I've mke research on schools lke Ball state univ, troy univ, univ of cancinnata and middle tennesse state univ. Please I nid u all to Hlp me find more schools that will accept my gre score of 288. Thank you all. 1. Finding schools should be your own research. No one knows your field better than you. You should be able to do research. 2. Think your decision to apply with 288 GRE through. I'll still advice you to retake in order to avoid going through this process all over again. And also to avoid pain if you don't get funding. Frankly I don't think you'd get funding with that score. 3. I'm slightly curious to know the 'people' that have gotten GA with 288 GRE. You sound so precise. I'm curious to know some of these elusive people who got GAs with 288 GRE. 4. The schools you just mentioned did you research their biomedical facilities and capabilities or did you choose because people suggested it to you without even checking if the school is competent in your field? I'll let this matter rest. I've adviced you based on My experience. Ultimately, It's your decision to make. Choose wisely. |

ddbluv: No disrespect bruv, but your in a tight corner, you can get admission into a lower cadre school but that score especially the GRE is a no brainer. But dont get it twisted, people with lower scores have gotten GA , you only need to search for a needle through a stack of hay. If you got time, start now, theres eastern/western illionois (i dunno which 1 among the 2, kinda generous peeps with grants). GOODLUCK with your search & hope you get a CHANGE of loacation by next year. People with lower scores than 288 Let's not just rush to advice. Sometimes let's reflect on what we say and how it's perceived by onlookers on this thread. The person who got in might have loads of credible research work related to the field , publications and that might have made up for an absolutely disastrous gre score. Why would any department hire someone that doesn't inspire confidence in a simple standardized test? Advising someone with a very low gre score to apply and also hope for an assistantship or funding is quite deceitful, misleading and disappointing. Ayzero007, your gre score is way too low for biomedical sciences. It's tough sell. Even if you're admitted you'd be hard pressed to get funding. Even excellent students are sometimes shelved, you're not a domestic student as well and this means you have to stand out like an albino in a congolese forest. My advice would be to study for the GRE, retake the exam based on your past info and evaluate where you went wrong the last time. Kindly disregard any call to apply to grad schools with 288 GRE and hoping for assistantship. You'd be setting yourself up for disappointment which can be averted. That being said, if you have loads of research experience, and publications perhaps, you could try. Nonetheless, there would still be questions about the abysmal test score. Goodluck |

bigfrancis21: Lol. Lesson number 1 learned. Never be too direct with Americans. Americans are not direct people. We Nigerians are very direct. It is one of the cultural differences you'll notice when you come in here. You'll start learning how to mask your intentions perfectly, how to come up with a lot of convincing reasons to support what seems to be your conviction, meanwhile your intention is the exact opposite, and also how to talk a lot. Hahahaha This is one big lesson. Some departments will tell you they don't have funds. Na lie o They just want to reserve it for the most driven students and want you to convince them you have enough research drive to merit full funding. |

Mystiqme: Lol. I don't think they are heartless. they may not have funds.
Gsun,
Option 1: Contact professors, tell them you have gotten admission and you want to work in their labs. Express interest and enthusiasm. It is not a display of desperation, but proactiveness- an important quality for a PhD student. This is my preferred option.
Option 2: Contact the Graduate coordinator and ask about the possibility of working as a graduate assistant with another department , unit, etc in your school.
Option 3: In the likelihood, that you do not get funding, it is probable that funding opportunities will turn up after one semester. Do you have personal/parental funds that you are willing to spend for one semester? Weigh the possibilities.
Option 4:Check if a PhD admission can be deferred. If so, defer and contact professors during that time. Good advice. But in many pharmacy and biomedical schools if they don't have funds they don't admit applicants which I think that's a more honest and straightforward approach rather than trying their luck to see if students will pay for PhD. How ridiculous! Gsun, mystiqueme and bigfrancis21 have given very sound advice. Get to work soonest. Goodluck bro. |

gsun: Dear house, Thank y’all for the help you are rendering to others in here.
I have a bit of problem. And here is my case: I got a PhD offer with an engineering department at a public University in the US. In the offer it was stated that funding is not guaranteed for now that the department will try to match me with Professors having grants in line with my interest to be my advisors so I could get funding from working with them. For that reason, I moved on to accept the offer, considering that I had applied to two schools under harsh conditions and later on the lower ranked school sent me regret mail for a probable mistake on my part. Meanwhile, I already had would be advisor there.
I have ended up not contacting Prof myself in this department given that they said they would do that, I felt they knew better. I also wanted it not to seem like desperation on my part. Now, I am looking at options and wondering if I should have gone ahead to talk with Profs myself or just stay patient and disturb the graduate advisors with reminders, as I am already preparing my mind now on deferring the admission to subsequent semester, while I try out one or two additional schools on my pool of shortlisted university. I see PhD in engineering without funding is not worth doing from reading pages of this thread and personal experience.
Fall is winding up with resumption fast approaching and I have exercise patient up till now. What do you advice? What are my chances? Can I trust them by waiting a bit longer? Your take please!
Thanks for your time!
CC:Imperiouxx,Bigfrancis21, ebdib, slimmy05, zeezahbee, godG, others Oh dear That school is very very heartless. PhD without funding is very rare. I can't even believe they would do this to you when other schools are giving full funding plus juicy stipends to their PhD students. No PhD is worth it without funding in fact the idea of PhD Is work - study and you even pay tax and you get a social security number like other Americans (like my case) Anyway, it's a two way thing. Mail, call, disturb, hound the department contact person Another Avenue is to mail the current students and ask them if they're funded and how they went about it. Don't defer yet. PhD application process is so harrowing I don't think anyone wants to do it twice. I certainly wouldn't. Lol. Just don't defer yet. There's still time. I got my 4th PhD admit just last week. After I've even gotten visa. So please don't give up yet. |

How is he going to even start mailing profs, hunting for assistantships and fellowships if he can't even do basic research about gre and toefl. It's stuff like this that make agents use people.
