it's necessary but impossible. virtually no country has had any success in controlling the internet. china is trying to but still. we've all seen what happened to libya despite tight internet control.
True. IMHO, every country should ensure that its terrestial laws fully apply on the Internet. In the Western World, evidence from the sites a person visited and things they said while browsing are routinely used to obtain convictions. In fact several convictions are based entirely on evidence gathered from the Internet, however content is never censored and speech is free. All sorts of convictions have been obtained from bullying to fraud and paedophelia; we too need to step up our laws. |
Contributing, Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba, canvassed a merger of states and slammed the practice of state governments going cap in hand to Abuja for revenue, adding that, “there is federalism more in name than in practice.”These might be the only diligent senators we have. |
Its sad that the NASS is even considering the creation of new states when a full 75% of the states are a drain on resources. We cannot continue running the country this way. If we cannot go back to regions, then we need to implement the following drastic step for each of the groups. Some of the states listed as distressed and critical are Kano, Sokoto, Niger, Zamfara, Katsina, Osun, Ekiti, Plateau, Benue, Edo, Borno, Adamawa, Cross River, Enugu, Taraba, Ogun, Kogi, Yobe, Ebonyi, Ondo and Kaduna.Every single one of the above states needs to be merged, except Rivers. States listed as unhealthy are Oyo, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Nasarawa, Gombe and Rivers. We can encourage the oil producing state above, Amaechi (Rivers) needs to borrow less and Sylva (Bayelsa) needs to go. Otherwise, they all need to be merged with more productive states as well. Only 9 States, Imo, Kwara, Lagos, Kebbi, Delta, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra and Jigawa are listed as being in a tolerable or healthy financial situation. The above might be Nigeria's only viable states. |
Policemen molest female journalist over photos Michaela Moye, Abuja bureau chief of Daily Times newspapers was harassed and molested by two mobile police corporals who chased her in a bid to seize her camera. Article | October 27, 2011 - 3:16am | By Chris Onyeose https://dailytimes.com.ng/sites/default/files/imagecache/400xY/n647145087_5210463_9938.jpg Men of the Nigerian police force attached to the task force of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) on demolition exercise at Wuse area of the city on Wednesday molested a female journalist for taking photos of the demolition exercise. Michaela Moye, Abuja bureau chief of Daily Times newspapers was harassed and molested by two mobile police corporals who chased her in a bid to seize her camera. “Who call you come here come snap us, we no invite any journalist come here so why are you snapping the demolition? That is how you people look for trouble up and down. Walahi, if I get you, I will beat you up and break both that camera and your teeth for talking to me like that,” said Suleiman Ibrahim, one of the two policemen. Residents, colleagues and security operatives of African Times Network have to come to her rescue as the police men chased her and tried to manhandle her, claiming she had no right to take photos of the demolition scene. One of the task force officers who intervened in the matter asked the policemen to restrain themselves as Michaela identified herself but the policemen refused while insisting that she should surrender the camera. When the leader of the task force was contacted to know why the demolition should not be covered by the media, he reacted rudely saying “I didn’t call you people here and please don’t ask me any question concerning that, go to the people that gave me the order,” he shouted. He neither gave his name nor the name or authorities that gave him the order to demolish the said illegal structures. http://dailytimes.com.ng/article/policemen-molest-female-journalist-over-photos [flash=420,315] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eJ-JM7abIA[/flash] |
Researchers unable to access billions in funds Experts say academic researchers are not writing good enough proposals to get the money Article | October 27, 2011 - 1:33pm | By Ibrahim Bello Billions of naira meant for research projects in tertiary and research institutions in the country are idle because of the inability for researchers to come out with clear proposals. Prof. Bashir Usman, the Vice Chancellor of Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola, made this known at a two-day training workshop on writing research proposal organised by the university. The workshop was held on Wednesday in collaboration with the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) in Yola. “It was reported recently at the Education Trust Funds workshop in Kano that billions of naira are lying unaccessed because the proposal presented by our colleagues did not meet the required standard,” Bashir said. He acknowledged that most academic researchers in the universities faced difficulty in accessing fund for research due to their inability to write acceptable proposals. “It is equally a fact that most funding agencies in the country and abroad turn down numerous research applications from our universities due to poor packaging of the proposal and other submissions from prospective applicants,” he said. “In this university, we submitted about 25 research proposals worth N45 million but only nine proposals, worth N8 million, was sponsored and the rest were turned down due to poor packaging. Indeed there is need for uniformity in the format presentation of the first proposal. Also there is a need for all universities and research institutions to come together and get a universal proposal format that can win research grant that is required.” Dr Sobi Dede, a director with the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, agreed with Bashir. “Most of our universities and researchers did not get a proper access into such fund due to poor proposal writing,” he said. He said the aim of the workshop was to encourage the researchers’ capacity in writing required and standard research proposal to promote national development. http://dailytimes.com.ng/article/researchers-unable-access-billions-funds |
^ Save the emotional outpouring for your church service. Henry120:It is about spending the money saved elswhere, where it would directly benefit the people instead of being paid into the pockets of a cabal who have found legal means to rob the country through fuel imports. The full details of that area have not yet been made public, but here are some titbits from the minister: And there are major benefits that will cut across all major sector of the economy. Some of them involves road works, major public maintenance work, others involve ongoing mass transportation; there are schemes for skilled youths and also schemes for unskilled youth and of course there will be areas for maternity and child care etc. but we shall ensure that cross the board that the package is robust and monitored and advised on by Nigerians of high integrity so that it is clear that it is a credible and transparent process. |
^ Bravo! You sound confident and happy, your low-self-esteem just "evaporated" with that post. Hurray! Dude, load some slugs into your imaginery beretta and do the World a favour. |
Ufeolorun: |
18 months ago, Nigerians were queueing up and paying well over a hundred Naira per litre, that has now been conveniently forgotten. The economy did not collapse then and at that time there were no palliatives, just hardship. We are always quick to forget. What we should bother ourselves about is the mechanism by which those palliatives would be delivered to ensure that the whole process is transparent and the man on the street is not double-crossed by any interests or any power. |
muyoto:Dude, I have always received them on Nairaland. And its always the same pack of fools who think they can scare people into shutting up. @Rhino You are just a low self-esteemed clown thinking you can get ranking by following the smell of the shiit. You should find employment with NURTW as the new Saka Saula. |
Raising a panel is usually the first step when they don't want to do something. So those against subsidy removal shouldn't worry anymore. Though I believe its better they remove it.
The word, "panel" was never used by Deziani, it is the newspapers interpretation of her words below: Government would not handle the implementation of these benefits, so that it would be opened and transparent. As we speak a committee of a highly-respected Nigerians is being put together, who would monitor and advice |
D sage:As per the bolded, Nigerians have been battered, so it is expected that such persimism would arise. What I'd suggest to govt, is that they set up the palliatives and get the programmes running for the people to benefit from a couple of months before removing the subsidy; that way, they will be able to win over minds, especially if the benefits far outweigh any increases in fuel cost. Ironically, its less than two years since fuel queues were abolished in Nigeria and we routinely paid well above a hundred Naira per litre, yet the economy never crashed and transportation costs were bearable. If the subsidy is removed and the palliatives are properly targetted, Nigeria's economy would actually improve drammatically, the subsidy is an enslavement. |
marvix:The arrow couldn't have been shot straighter. It is worrying that many choose to listen to emotional statements rather employ logic that the Good Lord has blessed each and every one of us with. These folk do not realise that they are becoming the army for a powerful cabal that the govt would struggle to match Naira for Naira. Our revolutionaries are refusing to be freed and fighting unwitting battles to remain prisoners to the same old owners of Nigeria. |
A very dangerous, evil and strange proposal indeed. There is a lot of odious policking on the internet that is very worrying, but absolutely no need for sensorship. Individuals in high positions need to be careful about the suggestions they make. Perhaps Nigeria needs to enforce civil laws on the Internet as is done in the developed World, but we must go no farther. |

Very nice development. Does anyone know if the signals are electronic or still the old wire and pulley type? The effectiveness of the signalling system can greatly affect journey times. |
playmode:Lol! How do you manage to keep your mouth so neatly tucked into your arse? You make a lot of noise, but thats expected of madmen. |
The threats against Muslims in Delta are thoroughly condemnable. However, it points to the continuous segregation of the country along ethnic lines with religion used as a political tool. That is the biggest miscalculation of Northern power mongers and one that could plunge the nation into the abyss. Aside from the employment of religion as a tool, we also have the most unrefined core-Northern proponents of bigotry regularly dish out threats to Niger Deltans, that they will be dealt with. Dealt with for what, for suffering for 50 years? The mind of the average Niger Deltan is alive, under siege and alert to oppression; we are ready and prepared to battle any comers. In that sense, boko haram is the worst of political tools to have been let loose on Nigerians, because some feel that having a Niger Deltan in power will burst the corruption they feed on in the oil sector forever. The pics below are off Oloibiri where Nigeria's first commercial oil well is located. Compare that place with Abuja and ask why any core-Northerner has the right to issue threats against ND people as if they are slaves. https://www.dawodu.com/npr3.jpg Nigeria's first oil well. https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3214/2677245652_ba9cc20093.jpg |
@ Beaf Abeg!! After now, go and take one bottle of schnapps on me, I really cant understand the arguement of some people. If it is such a burden for the state to accomodate and educate 30 disabled kids, how then can they pay 18'k minimum wage?! How then do they pay pensions and build roads and bridges?! For a state that is supposedly supposed to be the fountain of knowledge, they seem to be quite imbecillic in their actions.
The arguments from the pro-discrimination camp are so far out, that they actually sound crazy. Why would any thinking person support evil? Strangely, as ndu_chucks noted; most of the proponents actually live abroad and enjoy fantastic rights and a civilised approach to their welfare. But when it comes to Nigeria, their attitude turns jungle. I wonder how our dear country will ever develop. We have a state govt that 100% depends on money from Abuja for its survival, yet it kicks out students from whose soil its money has been sourced; the reason being that they cannot cater for those that hail from the region that supplies their revenue; its a morally poverty stricken argument if ever there was one. |
Another dissapointing thread with a contrived title. The word, party does not even occur once in the entire article, rather this is the way it describes GEJ: Nigeria has one of the biggest delegations with more than 120 people and its towering President with his distinctive black hat has cut an imposing figure at the business forum all week. Its best that we cut out these funny threads that bend black into white from NL. |
