A few days to the commencement of the general election, the nation’s security agencies have put some prominent politicians under surveillance. Those affected include former military president Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, former national security adviser Aliyu Guasu – all former PDP presidential aspirants and some other leaders of the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF).A senior security officer told LEADERSHIP last night that “our reason is based on security reports from different intelligence units.”
But, spokesmen of both the former military president and the former vice-president, Prince Kassim Afegbua and Mallam Shehu Garba, said their principals could not be intimidated by the action of the security agencies.

Although the security source refused to speak further on the matter, LEADERSHIP gathered that the move may not be unconnected to their political activities, especially as the general elections draw near.

There were reports weekend that the three aggrieved PDP presidential aspirants along with other leaders of the NPLF had fixed a secret meeting for yesterday to discuss their political agenda, especially as it affects the presidential election that is coming up on April 9.

The group, under the leadership of Malam Adamu Ciroma, was said to have discussed with two opposition parties, the Congress for People Change (CPC) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), over a possible alliance that could be designed to frustrate President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential ambition.

The president had, on Saturday, at his presidential campaign grand finale accused some opposition parties of sponsoring political violence across the nation to score some political points that, he said, were inimical to the nation’s security. The security agencies had been instructed to monitor them and deal with them, he said.

IBB’s spokesman, Afegbua, described the action of the security men as “political desperation, intimidation and intolerance”.

According to him, “I can assure you that we have travelled this road before; so, it is not something new. As a former military president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, General IBB cannot be intimidated because he has his rights under the constitution to own an opinion and to endorse whoever he feels will secure the nation.”

For his part, Garba, the media consultant to Abubakar, said : “It will not surprise anyone if that is the case; it is only a confirmation of our fear.”

He said that the action of the security agents was expected; given the tension the elections are generating.

I think Buhari should be bold enough to say
"If I don't "win" this election then Jonathan must die".

Anybody who has not seen that Mr President has shown enough goodwill towards a free and fair election must be blinded by emotions or simply being mischevious and that includes Buhari.

The ACN member caught with INEC results sheets last in Anambra State should be left to go free while Mr President should be held responsible.

Buhari and his gang of over ambitious soldeirs were the ones who brought this calamity upon us, and I hold them (him personally) responsible if this election is rigged.
Thats basically it.

Some Nigerians are always quick to point to successes in foreign countries, yet the very same people will be first in the queue to bash any fellow Nigerian with vision and ability.
This is another Empty thread that lists goals as usual, but makes no suggestion about how to get there. Its all about being loudmouthed.

If you really wish to help Nigeria, start by helping the local talent down your street and getting others to do the same. I don't want to see these lame-brained topics dotting the whole place. They only show up our national inferiority complex.

If you believe you can do it, you will and you won't have to point at the Japanese like they are from Mars.

Your candidate GEJ goes around promising Northerners 'juicy positions' in his cabinet. He's made a pledge to step aside in 2015 for a Northerner. His godfather (Obasanjo) even hinted to all and sundry in the finale of his campaign that power will revert back to the North.
So what you're really jubilating about now is another 12 years of PDP misrule. 4 years for GEJ, then Sambo gets another 8 years (He's a northerner so it shouldn't be an uphill task like what Jonathan faces).

You clowns aren't weakening the north, you're appeasing them temporarily and strengthening them for the long run while simultaneously voting in the most corrupt party in Africa.

Ex-Generals Under Watch
Written by Jacob Segun Olatunji, Abuja Saturday, 26 March 2011

As the general elections draw nearer, a group of retired military officers, made up of Brigadier-Generals and their equivalent in the Navy, Airforce and the Police, are now under security watch, following their recent meeting in Kaduna, details of which are yet to be known to the Federal Government.

A reliable security source told the Saturday Tribune on Friday that the action became necessary following unfavourable security report that got into the presidency from the gathering of the retired Generals.

The source revealed that security report from the gathering indicated that the former Generals were said to be putting heads together to rally supports for one of the presidential candidates in the forthcoming elections.

“The retired Generals who attended the Kaduna meeting, are under strict security watch. We don’t know their mission and motives. We have been trying to find out, but they are not telling the truth. What they said they called the meeting for was not what we found out, but we are analysing the reports from the meeting and as well monitoring them,” the source declared.

The source further hinted that the minutes of the meeting of the retired Generals were already with the Department of State Security Services (SSS), the police command and other intelligence units of the military, navy and airforce for further scrutiny.

“We don’t expect such act that is inimical to the security of the nation from such senior citizens. As citizens of this country, they have freedom of association under the constitution but such freedom of association should not be at variance with the security of the nation; we are not accusing the retired Generals of anything, but we are watching them; nobody is above the law of the land,” a top security official told Saturday Tribune on Friday.

“Look at how some of these retired Generals in a particular political party are behaving with their unguarded utterances, go and read an interview one of them granted to one of the national dailies recently. This is uncalled for at this critical anal of Nigeria, nobody is above the law. If we have any reason to invite any of them, we will do; we are committed to the security of the country,” the source further explained.

It was even learnt that some of the Generals were behind the Northern Political Leaders’ Forum (NPLF)’s insistence that President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must sign an agreement on power rotation before it would support his presidential ambition.

Efforts to speak with the spokesperson of the SSS, Mrs. Maryln Ogar, proved abortive as her phone line was not going through when contacted, but another senior officer, who wanted anonymity, confirmed the development, saying “nearly every Nigerian is under watch, not the retired Generals alone.”

It is quite logical for Buhari to have addressed people in the north in Hausa. However in recognition of non hausas who are interested in voting for him and need to know what is being said, there should have been english translation.

He did isolate those who dont understand hausa also.
It is not just that. He has had dozens of campaigns in the North and just 3 in the South; those actions truly capture his inner thoughts as a sectionalist. His behaviour after his coup has already marked him out as an ethnic bigot; locking the Igbo VP, Ekwueme in Kirikiri maximum prison, while keeping his Fulani kinsman, Shagari under "house arrest" in highbrow Ikoyi.

If many of the Buhari's crowd are youths with no jobs or education (and therefore does not understand English) isn't that a major sign of the PDP 12 years of failure? what that means is that PDP 12 years of failure is now confronting them, the evil that men do they say now confronts them, no longer live after them.
Okupe was just being responsible. It is quite clear that he is describing the almajiri's that form Buhari's crowds. PDP did not create the almajiri system, in fact it was there before and during Buhari's time, but he did nothing about it. Today, there are a whopping 10 million of these urchins, a figure greater than the populations of more than two thirds of the countries in the World. Buhari is more to blame for the almajiri system, and like the hegemonist cabal, he is quite happy to use them too.

@Beaf
So what you are saying is: If Jonathan can speak Hausa, that he will not use Hausa in the north knowing that many, especially the uneducated one will get his message? Now you think its a bad thing. Or you truthfully believe that he will resort to English knowing that they have no idea what he is talking about? Should that kind of thing like campaign be people's oriented. Campaign is like selling a product, so can you decide to sell a product with a language a wider aundience will know and understand or will ue oe just because, as he said- a lingo?

You mean if JONATHAN come to Imo, Anambra, Enugu or any of the Igbo states and talk to the people in IGBO language, that that alone won't win him a few vote? Beacuse eveywhere in the world people always appreciate someone that bother to talk to you in your own language.

Example: Gov Idris of Kogi state was born and raised in Onitsha and speak perfect Igbo. This guy uses every opportunity to speak and show off his Igbo speking skill and guess what? it wins him support of Igbos residing in Kogi all the time and has milk it.

Okupe just told you that in the north, the elite and the few middle class they have do not attend Buhari's rallies except the youths, the unemployed, the homeless and the poor. So you think if that scenario is translated in the poll that the elite/middle class are more than the other mention group or don't you think it 5% vs 95%?

Are you saying that Jonathan will be happy to hear from Okupe, that in the north, he has no support among ordinary or poor people? Tell me which candidate, anywhere in the world who will be happy to be called the candidate of the elite?

Forget about politics sometimes and he honest with yourself, Okupe through this interview, has reveal a lot of what the situation is behind the scene in the PDP whenever they see the kind of crowd Buhari is pulling, especially in the north. When the northern governor are promising him tht they will deliver the north, do you think Jonathan believes them when he watch, just like you and me the kind of rallies Buhari was having compared to his? Be honest with your self and your conscience for once.
The ethnically bigotted "Sai Buhari" jingle is not limited to the North, or is NL in the North too?
Just to cut it short. why don't we hear crap jingles like, "Sai Ribadu?" Why don't we hear the Ijaw equivalent for GEJ?

PDP has never been challenged like this before. They will never forget 2011. It will teach them several lessons. One of the lessons will be to stick with zoning as long as tribalism and religious differences exist in Nigeria. They will also learn to field only healthy candidates (lesson from Yar'adua).

I also hope the opposition parties have learnt their lessons.

I am happy because, these are signs that democracy is working and should not be crashed as some have suggested. It takes time for the parties to reform and metamorphose into the desired form. Democracy is the slow and steady process that brings sustainable development.
The two bolded blocks are in direct contradiction. But lets leave that for another thread or another time.

Politics › Re: Pdp Is Genuinely Afraid Of Buhari Genuine Rally Crowd- Doyin Okupe by Beaf: 12:54pm On Mar 27, 2011
He noted that when Buhari campaigns in the whole of the North, he does not speak English but Hausa language to his supporters, arguing that other candidates who are also northerners speak English, the lingua franca, and Hausa interchangeably.
“Buhari never speaks English. The whole idea is to present himself as a symbol of the northern and religious struggle. And that is what is dangerous about it,” he said.
I have mentioned this same thing numerous times. How does a person conduct ALL election rallies in Hausa, what does that say? Why "Sai" Buhari, if not to appeal to almajiri's? Nigeria is not a Hausa country and I will not accept anyone campaigning to me in Igbo or Yoruba, so why Hausa?

The whole movement is ugly. There was Bakare (a pastor) talking about the "wild-wild North" and givingexamples of how people set themselves alight in Tunisia and Egypt. It is also worthy of note that the only person arrested for setting off bombs, is a CPC member (he killed 10 people).
To complete the ugliness, Buhari also took part in secret meetings with disgruntled militants. Why?
Politics › Re: Pdp Is Genuinely Afraid Of Buhari Genuine Rally Crowd- Doyin Okupe by Beaf: 12:45pm On Mar 27, 2011
When such a senior influential figure makes such weighty statements, it is more sensible to sit up and listen than make instinctive partisan statements. There is a lot of meaning below the surface of Okupe's words.

Its better to be wise than be a tool. "National security risk?" Hints of sharia inspired madness? We know how religious riots are put down.

In fairness to Beaf, he has never defended d righteousness of PDP. His argument has always been abt individuals and ideologies.

Now, my proposition towards a "final solution" is dt may PDP loose massively in ds election. Ds will force d hawks and opportunists away into other parties, at least for d time being. PDP will b forced to restrategise frm point of disadvantage to act credibly wt d strenght of its brand popularity to regain public trust. It will also giv d oppositions advantage to build up in spreaf and resources to stand formidably in d next major contest. Thus, making it their (ruling opposition) fight to loose based on d new yardstick; performance and credibility. This will set d stage for more responsible, virile and progressive oriented politics of d immediate future.

But still, in my opinion, if PDP looses, it may only come back stronger, better and refined. It may just b d party for d future.

But for now, it is a nest of vipers and every other villains!
Thanks for the bolded.

As for PDP reforming if defeated, that will not happen. Instead, there will be mass defections of the same old faces into the ruling party and since they have much more money and a powerful grassroots machinery, they will take it over affairs long before the new govt can settle in, and the shyte will continue. I would rather have a thinker with deep reformist and progressive ideas (like GEJ) in charge. The reason is simple, GEJ has no choice, but to continue deep reforms of PDP, or be swallowed; as soon as PDP is reformed, the smaller parties will have little choice, but to follow suit or disappear into nothingness. An example is the way in which party primaries were carried out this year, PDP's were totally transparent, creating a standard that no party will fall below in the next four years.

Positive change will be better delivered in small increments through the application of diplomacy, tact, patience and wisdom; rather than a wooden frontal assault that will definitely lead to violence.

Challenge now is, how do we solve the problem? PDP has been at the helm of this system for 12 years now. Why don't we try someone else and see if change will come? Why should we knock out CPC and other parties if we have not given them a chance of changing a system even u agree is faulty? How can we expect change if we keep doing the same thing over and over again?
The issue of bad governance has nothing to do with PDP, but everything to do with our inept elite. Without fundamental restructuring, you will only get the same old people back, cos they'll simply decamp and take over the new party (ask Buhari whose CPC has been captured by ex-PDP pro-zoning people).

I repeat that our problem is the system, you can't try the same old trick and expect a different result. Currently, I tend more to PDP, because its the only party thats reforming, and I expect that process to accelerate after the election madness when there will be no immediate need for anybody's help.

I'm posting an excerpt from an article by yet another Yoruba man. Its usually best to get an inkling of the truth from an honest 3rd party:

The restiveness in the Niger Delta region would have been contained a bit if the funds under your supervision as PTF Chairman were used effectively to put in place good infrastructure in the oil producing areas, where you got the money from. Instead, between 80 – 90% of PTF’s activities were concentrated in the North-West sub-region, which is your home area. And in the South-East, the deplorable state of the federal roads there is more than enough proof that the PTF under your watch was more interested in other places. You did nothing there.
