The rapid advance of the rebels is a repeat of what happened during their civil war. The Outarra's forces now control 75% of the country, the rest should fall later today or tomorrow. There is a huge lesson in this for the inept Jacob Zuma, who felt he could undermine Nigeria's voice in W.Africa by sending a South African warship to Abidjan to thwart any Ecowas invation plans. Well, well! He forgot that Outarra's forces could be supplied with serious arms (perhaps even more) overnight, now they're kicking serious arse all over Ivory Coast. Zuma was also forced to swallow his words and take the lead from Nigeria in declaring Outarra the rightful President of the country. Nice victory for GEJ. |
Ouattara fighters seize I.Coast capital, UN sanctions Gbagbo Fran Blandy March 31, 2011 - 9:49AM . Forces backing Ivory Coast's recognised president Alassane Ouattara seized the capital Yamoussoukro on Wednesday, while the UN Security Council slapped sanctions on strongman Laurent Gbagbo. Residents of Yamoussoukro, the country's small political capital, reported scenes of jubilation in the streets, as Ouattara's Republican Forces took control of the city on the third day of an all-out offensive. "Yamoussoukro is under the control of the Republican Forces, a jubilant crowd is cheering them, they are parading through town," one resident said. Advertisement: Story continues below Ouattara's forces were also pushing closer to San Pedro, the world's largest cocoa exporting port. Meanwhile in New York, the UN Security Council on Wednesday unanimously ordered sanctions against Gbagbo over his refusal to hand over power. Resolution 1975 made the first explicit call by the 15-nation Security Council for Gbagbo to stand down in favour of Ouattara, who the United Nations and virtually all countries say won a presidential election last November. A travel ban and assets freeze were ordered against Gbagbo, his wife Simone, and three of his closest associates. The European Union and United States have already imposed sanctions against Gbagbo and his leadership. Gbagbo was expected to address the nation Wednesday night amid mounting pressure as Ouattara's forces move towards the economic capital, the coastal city of Abidjan. Gbagbo has called for a ceasefire, but Ouattara's camp dismissed this as a "diversion". "It is up to Gbagbo to lay down arms," Ouattara's spokeswoman Anna Ouloto told AFP. Election-linked violence has left at least 460 people dead with as many as one million fleeing their homes, according to UN agencies. Weary of failed diplomatic efforts four months after the vote, Ouattara's camp has declared all peaceful solutions "exhausted." "Gbagbo has only a few hours to leave, otherwise we will march on Abidjan," the country's economic hub, Ouattara's prime minister Guillaume Soro told the France24 news channel. "It will become a lot more complicated for him," he warned. In Abidjan, shooting could be heard in several northern suburbs. Panicked citizens rushed to their homes, AFP correspondents reported. The pro-Ouattara fighters, after seizing the town of Tiebissou earlier in the day, pushed south to Yamoussoukro, home to 150,000 people. "Everything is okay, the station, the gendarmerie are occupied by the Republican Forces. We no longer see the FDS," a resident said, referring to Gbagbo's Defence and Security Forces. "We see the Republican Forces circulating in 4X4's across town," a resident told AFP by phone. Several witnesses said the fighters had left only a small detachment in Yamoussoukro before continuing south towards the coast. A resident of Toumodi, 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of the capital, reported shooting in the town. Toumodi lies 200 kilometres from Abidjan. In the past three days Ouattara's fighters have rapidly moved south of a traditional ceasefire line that has split the country in two since 2002. A failed coup against Gbagbo nine years ago left pro-Ouattara rebels in control of the north and the strongman holding the south. Also Wednesday, two French police assigned to the French embassy were wounded when pro-Gbagbo forces fired on their car, a foreign ministry spokesman said in Paris, condemning the incident as "unacceptable." Ally Coulibaly, Ivory Coast's ambassador to France appointed by Ouattara, said his camp controlled "three quarters" of the country. In Abidjan, thousands of fervent Gbagbo supporters who had been urged to enlist in the army if they were "willing to die for their country" were called up on Wednesday. http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-world/ouattara-fighters-seize-icoast-capital-un-sanctions-gbagbo-20110331-1cgqe.html |

Thanks for your timely post OP. Sahara Reporters has grown into an evil thing. This is the best Sahara Reporters has to offer. The Plan to Re-industrialise Nigeria Written by Maureen Chigbo Wednesday, 30 March 2011 President Goodluck Jonathan lays the foundation for a gas revolution that would support and promote agriculture and other industries The federal government is fast-tracking Nigeria’s industrial rebirth through a revolution in gas exploitation that will be based on the building of two world class petrochemical plants, two fertiliser plants, five fertiliser blending plants, a methanol plant and a Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, distribution plant. The gas revolution is aimed at achieving significant improvement in power availability for all and repositioning Nigeria as the undisputed regional hub for gas-based industries that would engender an unprecedented growth in Nigeria’s gas supply from the current one billion cubic feet per day to more than 10 billion cubic feet per day by 2020. The petrochemical and fertiliser projects will attract more than $10 billion foreign direct investment between 2012 and 2014. It also will have a huge impact on the Nigerian economy. The federal government has taken systematic approach to implementing the projects by starting with a focused effort on three critical investments which was launched in Abuja, March 24, by President Goodluck Jonathan in the Aso Villa Banquet Hall. In attendance were Vice President Namadi Sambo both local and foreign investors and captains of the oil and gas industry. The projects include the Central Processing Facility, CPF, which will be located in Obiafu in Rivers State, and built by a consortium comprising of Agip and Oando. The CPF alongside others will be the brainbox for the whole project for the president’s industrialisation agenda. It is at these CPF that wet gas from wells would be gathered and processed, producing the dry gas and natural gas liquids that would also be feedstock for the fertiliser, power and petrochemicals plants. The second investment relates to the world scale petrochemical plant with a capacity for producing 1.3 million tonnes of polyethylene per annum and 400,000 tonnes of polypropylene. This will be the biggest plant of its kind in Africa and will be located in Delta State, somewhere near the Koko FTZ area. Diezani Allison-Madueke, minister of petroleum resources, said that numerous secondary industries will come as an offshoot of this plant, producing from low end plastics products to high end product such as printed circuit boards. One fallout of the big plant is the need to redevelop and expand the Koko port to ease evacuation of products of the plant. The third investment is related to the agriculture – two fertiliser plants with an installed capacity of 1.3 million tonnes per annum each and which will be located in Lagos and Delta states. In addition to these plants, five fertiliser blending plants are being planned to be established. “Our strategy with these plants is to bring fertiliser home to the point of use and blending it in a customised way for the specific soil requirement in the area,” Alison-Madueke said, adding, “the approach will lead to improved yield which will galvanise numerous agro and food processing industries around the vicinity of the blending plants and thus industrialise rural areas.” The gas- to-fertiliser plants will be built by Chevron/NNPC joint venture. Globally, the petrochemical value chain is known as a major creator of employment. Allison-Madueke said that with the planned investment in the 1.3 million tonnes per annum capacity petrochemical plant, it is estimated that more than 200,000 direct and indirect jobs would be created. Other economic benefits of the gas to fertiliser project, according to her, is that the fertiliser plants are strategically planned to revolutionise the agricultural sector such that food would be more available and affordable to millions of Nigerians. A lot of jobs would be created through the gas revolution. More than 500,000 jobs are estimated from this agriculture-related agenda as well as an attendant increase in the nation’s GDP,” she said. In order to meet the gas requirement for the massive industrialisation programme of the administration, the minister reiterated the federal government’s decision to intensify exploration for hydrocarbons in the inland sedimentary basins consisting of Anambra Basin, Bida Basin, Dahomey Basin, Gongola/Yola Basin, Sokoto Basin, Middle/Lower Benue Trough and the Chad Basin, using the latest seismic technology including electromagnetic surveys. “By enhancing the prospectivity of these basins, we hope to build significant supply bases across the various geopolitical zones that complement the existing gas supply centres in the Niger Delta,” she said. Nonetheless, these investments represent the first tranche of the governments industrialisation programme. The second phase has already commenced with pre-feasibility assessment of CPF to be located in Warri. With the CPF, there will be a significant boost in the production of LPG, resulting in much lower price and increased penetration across Nigerian households. The minister said with the dredging of the River Niger, the inland waterways would be used to move LPG as far as North to Lokoja, where an LPG bottling and distribution hub is planned to be located for the Northern region. This is expected to materialise in 2014. “We shall be expediting the delivery of our critical gas pipelines from Calabar – Ajaokuta- Kano, bringing gas to the east and North. We will through this efforts re-stimulate the textile and related industries in the North and get more fertiliser and methanol industries across the country,” she said. The government took a step forward in the implementation of these projects when it signed the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with investors last Thursday. They are Xenel of Saudi Arabia for the petrochemical plant and Nagarjuna from India for the fertiliser and blending plants. Others are AGIP, Chevron and Oando. The minister said that the coming of the investors is evidence of their confidence in the administration of Jonathan and his vision. “As we regain our rightful position in the world at large, I am confident that your vision has catalysed a new dawn for Nigeria and I congratulate Your Excellency for this vision,” an excited Alison-Madueke told the president during the official launch of the investment and the signing of the MoU. ”It is more in the fact that this event demonstrates loud and clear to Nigerian and the world at large, that Nigeria is indeed ready for business,” she said. An elated Jonathan responded saying as a nation, we are continually striving to realise the fullness of our potential. “Very few nations can boast of the resources we have, both natural and human. Our proven gas reserves base of 187 trillion cubic feet and an undiscovered potential of 600 trillion cubic feet, leave us with no excuse for the relatively high rate of unemployment and under-industrialisation,” Jonathan said. “Today, we took a small but important step in a conscious effort to reverse that trend. Today, marks the beginning of what I believe will be an amazing journey of transformation of our own destiny and the restoration of Nigeria into the league of nations which has leveraged its strength in the abundance of natural gas to transform the lives of present and future generations of Nigeria.” If all goes according to plan, the Jonathan administration would position Nigeria firmly as the undisputed regional hub for gas based industries such as fertiliser, petrochemicals and methanol. “We would by then, be producing enough fertiliser to create a self sufficient country and a net exporter of fertiliser and food to the world in 2014. We would be the leading regional centre for petrochemical production and manufacture of petrochemical related products both for local and export use. This aspiration to re-industrialise Nigeria is aggressive and can only be achieved through a revolution, “he said, adding, that over the next few years, full implementation of the entire gas master-plan agenda would result in about $25 billion worth of investments in gas processing, transmission and downstream gas utilisation projects. Austen Oniwon, group manging director, GMD, NNPC, said that the launch is a step in actualising the clear mandate which Jonathan set for the oil and gas sector. Levi Ajuonuma, group general manager, Group Public Affairs Division, NNPC, described it as historic. He is confident that the gas revolution will turn around the Nigerian economy for good. http://www.newswatchngr.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2949&Itemid=1 |
It is exactly what the country needs. Any of the inferiority complex stigma that is attached to Nigerian goods should be wiped away with the FG massive patronage. Everyday Nigerians will easily follow suit. |
GEJ is the very first thinking President Nigeria has had in her long and arduous 50 year history. I am impressed by his thoughts toward the technological development of Nigeria. At the debate this evening, he promised to create a framework to create and regulate micro-refineries; currently, JTF destroys such enterprises, rather than harness and improve the technology. He is also (amongst other initiatives) creating a bill to set aside 1% of Nigeria's GDP for research and Development for both public and private sectors. For the first time in our 50 year history: FG to set aside one per cent of GDP for researchOthers are, the gas masterplan which will create 300,000 jobs; the power roadmap that will bring business costs down by 40%, and his sponsoring of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) which will see Nigeria's income rocket from $101billion to $687billion! |
Jonathan orders MDAs to patronise Nigerian made vehicles By Chesa Chesa Snr State House Correspondent, Abuja President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to buy vehicles assembled in Nigeria to encourage local industries and boost employment. He gave the order at the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in Abuja on Wednesday, according to Information and Communications Minister, Labaran Maku, who briefed reporters. In all future contracts, especially when they need machinery, MDAs are also to give priority to locally assembled or produced machines or vehicles. Jonathan directed the National Economic Adviser to develop a new tariff that protects local industries. “This is important because if our industries are to produce again and if we have to encourage employment, it has become necessary to emphasise a change of attitude in preference for those businessmen and women who have taken their time and resources to invest in the Nigerian economy,” Maku said. He added that the Finance Ministry is working with insurance companies and banks to develop a consumer credit facility which will be limited to made-in-Nigeria products. “This is to ensure that consumers are encouraged to buy made-in-Nigeria goods.” The government plans a public enlightenment campaign on the scheme. The FEC meeting was preceded by Jonathan’s inauguration of two Presidential committees on public sector reforms and security awareness. The 16-member Committee on Review of Reform Process in the Public Sector, chaired by Adamu Fika, is to evolve strategies that will re-engineer the public service for better service delivery as well as clear grey areas between the Office of Head of Service and the Federal Civil Service Commission. The 19-member Committee on Public Awareness on Security and Civic Responsibility, headed by Lateef Adegbite, is to engender communal commitment to security and peaceful co-existence. Jonathan charged both committees to discharge their duties diligently and with patriotism, pledging full government support and assistance. http://www.independentngonline.com/DailyIndependent/Article.aspx?id=31333 |

omanzo02:LO! I've just been lurking in the background, having a good laugh throughout the thread. In the beginning it was just anti-GEJ people laughing at their usual rude jokes and engaging in their usual loud and tasteless name calling. As the debate proceeded, they got progressively quieter, and a couple of them even hailed GEJ. . . .But by the end of the debate, the diehards were taking their defeat in a very sore way. They swung their filthy words away from GEJ, and hauled them squarely at all Nigerians instead! The most hilarious point came when two of them revealed their absolute lack of love or concern for the country. Ibime thanked God he has a British passport and Donlittle thanked God he had residency papers (for God knows where). I am 100% sure we can see Buhari's reaction in these class of supporters. Hilarious!!! ![]() |

Asobank:Buhari is busy romancing IBB. I he had a clue he'd have been present. Same goes for Ribadu, both men are too busy with their consensus candidate programme with Ciroma, IBB and Atiku. |
The truth is coming out about the "Northern consensus candidate" thing and how Buhari is ready to sell Nigeria to the cabal. Just how someone who is hobnobbing with cabal kingpins like Atiku, Buhari and Ciroma aims to fight corruption is beyond me! Its more like he plans to farm corruption. How Babangida provided venue for CPC’s Minna rally By Mike Odiegwu, Minna Monday, 7 Mar 2011 Without the intervention of the former military dictator, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd.), a presidential rally organised in Minna, Niger state, on Thursday, by the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), would have been cancelled, investigations have revealed. It was learnt that all hope was lost over the possibility of the CPC holding its North Central presidential campaign inauguration, which had generated concerns within the Peoples Democratic Party-led government in the state. A source, who pleaded anonymity, said IBB provided an alternative venue that made the rally possible. The first hiccup to the planned rally was recorded when the state leadership of the CPC raised the alarm that the government had hatched a plot to deny the party the use of the Minna Trade Fair Complex proposed for the campaign. Though, the government had tried to distance itself from the management of the complex, many people had accused it of planning to stop the event for fear of the large followers of Buhari and to avoid using the state as the inauguration point for the CPC’s rally in the zone. The management of the facility under the President of the state Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Abdullahi Suleiman, had claimed that the facility was booked from February 28 to March 3 and would not be available for the CPC. However, investigations by our correspondent revealed that no activity was held at the complex on the stipulated dates. The CPC was said to have reported the matter to Babangida, who immediately prevailed on the police in the state to allow the event to hold. Babangida was said to have provided the Polo Ground in Minna for the party to hold its presidential rally as planned. It was gathered that the role played by Babangida had dispelled rumours that both generals were not in good terms and had compelled Buhari to pay him a courtesy visit after the rally. The source said, “Buhari was not happy with the role played by the Niger State Government. He was supposed to have paid the Governor of the state, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, a courtesy visit but he directed that the item should be expunged from his itinerary.” When our correspondent contacted the Chairman of the CPC, Mr. Shuaibu Umar, he confirmed that the role of Babangida made the rally possible but failed to disclose the details. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201103075292195 |

Now we can begin to understand why Buhari has never been able to articulate a single coherent plan. . . It is because he has none. The man is ready to sell the heart and soul of Nigeria to the cabal. Atiku and IBB were unable to find accommodation with GEJ, but have found a suitable host in Buhari. Can someone tell us how Buhari is going to do his quixotic battle with corruption, abi na maut? IBB, Atiku and Gusau have simply found a natural home in Buhari and CPC. They moved their lieutenants last month, but now cabal has openly moved its kingpins into CPC, after losing their PDP home. The truth has a way of revealling itself in ways that are unmistakable. Buhari has been holding nocturnal meetings with Ribadu, Northern stakeholders and Ciroma's NPLF to actualise the "Northern consensus candidate" nightmare. Lets see where this born to rule mentality leads. |
DrummaBoy:Sorry. But there hasn't been a single thought from you that is worth my time. You should be exceedingly glad that I have even put down a few words in return to your gibberish.
