texazzpete: It would do you good to actually read the post i was replying to. I was referring to Ibori here (another ex-Governor who has been lauded for 'doing something')
Funny, how you didn't accuse me of working for the Federal or State Government. Anyone with a brain should know that the major beneficiaries (and hence, major culprits) for the Delta's under-development is the state and federal Governments.
I wish you had actually read your post before pressing the button, because your post clearly says "governor" several times. But here, you are making it out as if you meant "ex-Governor" Ibori. The terms Governor and ex-Governor mean totally different things.
Methinks some tend to shed a few brain cells each time they log on.
redsun: Is it not in nigeria that a dean of faculty of computer science could not operate a computer in a law court as a witness?Or was it just a rumor?
Chongaiman: Some NLers are so intelligent that they are ignorant of what is meant to be sarcasm. Simply put, we are tired of image projection abroad. Modesty is for those who are alive. Hope you get the message this time.
You must be even dafter than you write. Nigeria holds the chairmanship of the United Nations Security Council and you expect they should change the UN agenda to discuss Nigerian issues. How hoplessly foolish can one get?
But u see, you still don't get my point. I intentionally previously called the boy a very good student because I did not want people to think my beef is with the boy. This has nothing to do with him.
Universities are not just there to train students but also to research and profer solutions to the country's issues. Its like a coy having a R& department and then still going to source for solutions in another coy's R& department without even consulting her own dept first. In other words, that coy is saying its own R& dept is a waste of money and resources. Thats how I interprete it.
I went to uni in 9ja and except you are saying we should develop our education (which I don't see how the President could have done in his mere two months of office), you wouldn't ask any Nigerian uni to undertake any R& that can be trusted. Lecturers are too busy selling handouts and deflowering innocent undergrads to deliver anything of use. The education system has been run down for decades and needs to be built up first before being challenged to provide emergency solutions.
I do agree that we need to develop our education system, but it isn't a days job. In developed countries unis are linked to govt and businesses, not the sort of crap we have here. Our education does need to be placed in a state of emergency.
Kobojunkie: Given that the .NET Library is applies equally to both VB.NET and C#, as well as so many other .NET Languages, it is false assumption that C# is better than VB.NET. Terse, maybe, but not necessary better than VB.NET.
This thread isn't about language comparisons, it is about C# all by itself and C# field experience in Nigeria.
This thread is not for VB or J# or or F# or any other language. It isn't about the .NET library either, because other languages like Python, Delphi, C++, C, D etc can harness the .NET platform, all you need do is write an adaptor.
So as I begged donpuzzo with his PHP, please dump your VB at the gate.
proudly9ja: It actually does. One should remember that this project is not even the boy's idea (as far as I can see). He is only part of a project team!
Have our profs and research scientists at home been tested before we ran all the way to Norway for solution? This is not how the world thinks. Charity they say begins at home. Again I maintain, this is a big slap and I feel so sorry for all of us who studied in Nigeria at some level cos here is our president telling us we can't solve simple problems with the knowledge we gained!
We've been saying Norway instead of Finland. This has nothing to do with where the boy is studying, he is too young to have had much of a choice anyway. Nigerians can (and should) contribute to the growth of the country anywhere they are. Lets not make this another home vs away battle that leads nowhere. A Nigerian is a Nigerian.
oyb: would this be the same onovo that said he would use satelites to monitor elections ?
all his 'help from isreal' was another bizarre outburst - isreal does not have a kidnapping problem and thus has no expertise in that aspect - if he'd sought help from latin american security agencies i'd have understood
Isreal has a huge kidnapping problem that has caused at least two wars.
proudly9ja: I wouldn't want to undermine the young man's effort. Kudos to him and his team.
But Uncle GJ has by this slapped the entire Nigerian education system in the face!
I have said over and over again that the solution to Nigeria's problems lies in the four walls of higher institutions. If Jonathan wants a solution to NEPA issues, let him invite our profs and research scientists in the Institutions all over Nigeria. If he wants a solution to kidnapping, let him do same. I assure you they will come up with solutions in less than 6 months! By overlooking them and publicly inviting ideas from a yr 2 student (who I consider to be an excellent student based on this project), is a slap on the face of the entire academic system in Nigeria.
Your argument is defeated by the fact that the boy is Nigerian. His being in Finland does not reduce that.
mikeansy: You are asking questions as if you are not in naija.
2 years ago I wondered how it could be possible for kidnappers to kidnapp victims, call the members of the family of their victims over the phone, negotiate for the money to be delievered to their destination of choice and yet go scot free? I have always wondered why our Police, JTF etc can not track these kidnappers and bust them.
This idea is not no new, there is nothing novel about it. That it took our Government all this while to start looking for solution on facebook when the technology to resolve this already exists tells me they are dumb.
By the way Jonathan has been in the executive arm of Government since 2007.
I asked the question, because in recent times, Onovo has claimed to be employing high tech solutions with foreign help from Israel. We don't know what that involved, therefore we cannot say that readily available methods have not been tried. I believe the student must have come up with an angle nobody else has seen (Nigerian or Israeli). And because of the security angle, his invention is very unlikely ever going to be made public.
precap2: Enlightening brothers like me would be easy if we could first enlighten brothers like Mugabe that government is not about being a hard man, but about running a good government or he should get out and let a better head do the job. He has stayed for too long and has nothing to show for it. Why can't he leave? Is he the only wise man in Zim?
Holla!
So the goal post moves? Why didn't we hear this about Omar Bongo? Why don't we hear it about Gaddafi (40 years), why not about Dos Santos, why not Paul Biya, how about Yoweri Maseveni and Idris Debby?
Chongaiman: She could as well make a case for security in Nigeria.
Damn! It just gets worse! The amount of ignorance expressed by some NLer's is bloody shocking! How do you understand the process of setting up the UN Security Councils agenda? International security matters do not include the price of garri or whatever else you dream up.
Under the Charter, the functions and powers of the Security Council are:
to maintain international peace and security in accordance with the principles and purposes of the United Nations; to investigate any dispute or situation which mightlead to international friction; to recommend methods of adjusting such disputes or the terms of settlement; to formulate plans for the establishment of a system to regulate armaments; to determine the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression and to recommend what action should be taken; to call on Members to apply economic sanctions and other measures not involving the use of force to prevent or stop aggression; to take military action against an aggressor; to recommend the admission of new Members; to exercise the trusteeship functions of the United Nations in "strategic areas"; to recommend to the GeneralAssembly the appointment of the Secretary-General and, together with the Assembly, to elect the Judges of the International Court of Justice
mikeansy: The issue here is not how much the guy knows
The issue here is what tickles our Government.
The basic existing method to track phones have not been explored yet. That tells me we have a dumb Government and this also brings into questions what they (the Government) based their judgement on.
texazzpete: The name of the project is called GPS Gate/GPS Trace.
With the Term 'GPS' used liberally in the name, do you really need someone on the Internet to tell you that it requires dedicated GPS chips?
Where did you get that?
Daramola, then responded to this posting by revealing that he and other Nigerian colleagues at Laurea University of Applied Sciences in Finland are currently involved in a project called The GPS gate, GPS trace, Google Maps on a mobile device to trace the location of the mobile device. (GSM Tracker).
He is only talking about his experience above; he has definitely not said his project would be based on GSM . Neither is there enough info to conclude that his tracking will be by GSM. It is the mapping (GIS) that should be of more importance; phones can also be tracked by triangulation from base stations, it does not have to be GSM.
mikeansy: . . . Talent? to come and re-invent an already existing technology?
mikeansy: Exactly!!!
They have not concluded the process of that registration. So I really don't know what the role of this boy will be. If he is coming to understudy the system and learn on the job so as to profer solutions in future and advice Government. Then Fair enough.
But if he is coming to invent a solution. Then this is a pure joke.
The technology to track mobile phones already exists. Government just needs to partner the companies involved in the trade.
Never make assumptions or claim all knowledge. Lets know what the boy has proposed in detail before rushing to conclusions; something in the proposal has deeply interested the presidency. Unfortunately, as goes with such territory, it will not be made public.
It is obvious that the boy is a genius, so lets give him his due.

Your blood is not thick enough for MEND and has been rejected.
Nigeria is the current chair of the United Nations (UN) Security Council. So the UN Security Council hold a debate and folk here expect that, rather than discuss international affairs, Nigeria as chairman, should lead the UN Security Council on discussions about NEPA and the price of garri?
Bloody ridiculous!
90% of the posts here are downright embarrassing to the average Nigerians intelligence and grasp of international protocol.
mikeansy: Donald Duke is no longer in PDP. He has no business talking about zoning. While he was in PDP he never believed in zoning. He tried to run for President in 2007 but had to step down. He has chosen to leave PDP because his political ideals do not conform with the rest of the party.
I do not think he has any business fighting PDP's zoning from Labour Party.
2 months is more than enough for any President to demonstrate how they will lead. Donald Duke can not sit back and support Jonathan merely because he is a fellow Southerner if he does not believe that Jonathan is up to the the job.
This is about the future of Nigeria and not we against them or North vs South. It is about the future of our children. Jonathan has not shown he can lead and can not be voted for a full 4-year term based on assumptions.
Donald Duke can only try to win elections in an open and fair way in the general election and that he has started to do. What PDP chooses to do at this stage in their primaries is not his business.
Zoning is not a PDP thing which is why there have been several cross-party meetings in Kaduna, Abuja and other places. Zoning is the defining characteristic of the old politics we all wish to see the back off. Zoning is about dividing the spoils based on tribalism.
With the above in mind, any serious politician who wants to institute merit and not swim with the tide, must have an anti-zoning / pro-merit plan. To the best of my knowledge, Duke is simply avoiding the issue and the rest of his plans are vague and he lacks the machinery to gather votes. He is either being idealistic or has not done the math. Duke is a smart man, so I believe he is merely setting up a bargaining position, rather than taking the task full on.
and what did they come to do in abuja cuz i'm aware they came.are they not supposed to be in the ND mobilising for jonathan instead of coming to Abuja.
Na you de tell dem how dem go operate now? Maybe you should become a MEND commander so that you can tell them what to do.
Some people here are jealous of an ordinary Nigerian, Dipo Daramola for getting the presido's ear from the street.
This is the sort of thing that will take Nigeria forward. Who ever heard of a President looking out for talented Nigerians in the past? Jonathan is proving to be the sort of man that will bring development to this country. There are many more talented Nigerians waiting to be fished out. If you have a positive proposal, there is a listening ear in our President! Abeg! Uncle Joe carry go!!!!!
This is an old story (at least two weeks). The threat from Cynthia White (JRC) is much more dire and recent; so is the one from Jomo Gbomo (MEND). Nobody is gonna roll over and be slaughtered like it happened in Jos.
I am not some wild-eyed idealist. Most of what I do is rooted in reality albeit leaving a little room for Hope and Change. I prefer to describe myself as a Centrist with left leaning sentiments. Donald Duke can be decribed in this way and this is why I agree with him most of the time. There is a fine line of demarcation between "cold hard reality" and "Cynicism". That fine line has "Hope" written all over it, when that line begins to get blurred people begin to confuse "cynicism" and "realism". When people get cynical in the name of being real the result becomes stagnation and no progress because they simply refuse to hope.
Jonathan has been given the stage to prove his worth, but he has failed to own the stage. I am not convinced on his leadership abilities and same goes for many Nigerians.
Jonathan Goodluck will not win PDP primaries (He does not have enough Governors in the bag). If he does win PDP primaries by hook or crook; PDP will become a weaker and fractured party and the North will move massively in the opposite direction. That will mean Jonathan will either loose the general election or will need to rig massively in other to win. If he does win by rigging he will be a very weak and ineffective leader. While and Obj or Yar'adua can run this country with a stolen mandate, Jonathan will have difficulties with a stolen mandate.
In essence Jonathan will turn out to be a liability to the Progressives and the South in general.
The best Scenario for Nigeria to be honest is for Jonathan to fail at PDP primaries so that the South and most progressives in Nigeria can focus on Duke. Duke can win the election all together by strong showings in most of the State Capitals in Nigeria and then winning massiviely in Southern and Middle-belt villages.
Most elections since 1999 have been decided by 1/5 to 1/3 of the population. If Duke's plan to build a movement around Labour, Students, Youth etc works we can get more voters to the poll to topple PDP. But Jonathan does not have the charisma to execute this.
Elections in true demcracies are won by those who can tap the passion of voters.
Please pardon me if I came across as implying that you were some "wild-eyed idealist"; that is certainly not my belief or intention.
You say, "Jonathan has been given the stage to prove his worth, but he has failed to own the stage". I think you are forgetting one very important fact, Jonathan has been President for just two months. He was sworn in on 6 May 2010; no President (even a dictator) can totally own the stage after just two months in power, especially after the sort of bitter succession battle we witnessed. When that is put into consideration, your permutations for the future must also fall. What is indeed pertinent is the question; how is Donald Duke planning to tackle the old politics that threw Nigeria into upheaval only recently and is threatening the same again through "zoning"? If he has no plan, then his timing is wrong; it is best he waits for the defeat of those forces or joins hands in the fight. Right now, he has no machinery and sounds too vague.
In his brief two months as President, Jonathan must be praised for being a strong uniting voice for the country. Nigeria was very close to the edge. . . But thats another story, lets talk about Duke.
The problem here is that you guys are too easyly pleased. Would you say that if Uduaghan was working for a private firm, and showed up this sort of preformance he would keep his job?, and not only that, he tops it up with stealing from the company.
What if the private firm was a mega thief and Uduaghan managed to still get some positive work done?
The main problem is with our false federalism which makes the country a mega thief that steals from the common man; it is not with the politicians it produces, they are mere symptoms of our structural malaise. A dog will never give birth to a tortoise. Until we get the Nigerian system right, we will only continue clamouring against the symtoms of a poor foundation, including the cracks, shoddy fixes and chaos.
spikedcylinder: How so? I mentioned his 'alleged' difference to other past Governors and wondered at the state of affairs in Lagos. That equals condoning corruption? Seriously? Lol. Don't give me a rib cracker. Besides this, I never compared Udughan to any Govenor. All I am saying is that you people should stop adulating them for the things they are PAID TO BE DOING. Fashola, Udughan, Bonnyface or Heineken!
Ok, my bad and apologies. . . .But we ain't adulating. We are comparing.
Not disputing anything but the fact that Fashola is a distinctly different Governor from what Lagos has had in the past says a lot about the state of affairs in the state.
All I am saying is, apply the same measure. Uduaghan is as good as Fashola.
monkeyleg: His timing is not wrong, infact it is very right. what is lacking in Nigeria is the collective desire for change. That is why we have all become perpertual siddon lookers, every good at phycoanalysing others and coming up with the usual prediction, that they would not win.
I wouldnt say duke is my prefered candidate, but he remains one of the best of the awful lot. If Nigerian really seek and desire change, they will awake from their slumber and ignite the necessary momentum that we need to effect that change
Don't get caught out. Donald Duke is simply taking on a negotiating position, he stands no chance. Elections are won in the motor parks, markets and unions, not on facebook. We will soon find out what he wants.
I very strongly believe Donald Duke has brilliant ideas, but he lacks the necessary machinery on the ground. More importantly, he has yet to unfurl a strategy to defeat the old politics; that to me is an imperative first step for any political aspirant. Anyone failing to deal with the old politics will only get swamped by its almost immeasurable power. So I ask again, what is Donald Dukes anti-zoning / pro-merit strategy? If he has none, its straightforward to conclude that his timing is wrong.
To those who think zoning is a PDP, rather than an old politics issue, do you wonder why certain elements of a political party would threaten to pull out and support other political parties that satisfy a certain sectional agenda?
monkeyleg: Representation is the best way to spread development
@Beaf,
No it is not. Good governance is the best way forward. This same idiology is the reason why Nigeria is fast regressing.
Stop being bought cheap. Like I asked would you serve your houseboy, while he sits on your chair, enjoys your car, house, money, and orders you around. Well I guess most of you wont, so please you guys should stop prostituting yourselves. if any of you understood what your state government should be doing for you, you probably wont come on here are start bragging about failures.
By the way, not one has answered where he got the money to buy those SUV's for now that is the main issue.
I think you've hit the nail on the head. I had actually wanted to say this some posts back, so here goes; you cannot blame the structural problems of Nigeria on Delta state. The effects of an upside down, fake "federalism" are captured succinctly by the the bolded in your statement. True federalism will provide true representation. Without adequate representation, a communities issues are never seen or heard.
Corruption though, must not be excused and your stance is to be admired, that is what makes Delta state stand head and shoulders above others in the fight against corruption. We remain the only state whose people chased down and offered up an ex-governor for corruption (Ibori). In the anti-corruption stakes, all other states are lagging behind us, we've set the standard. However, compared to most governors, Uduaghan is a high performer who can only operate within the boundaries of the false (and wicked) federalism Nigeria practises. . . a system that was deliberately set up to propagate corruption.
spikedcylinder: It irritates me to no end when people thank politician or adulate them for things they claim to have done in their respective states/constituents like those said politicians did those things with their father's money. Newsflash: They are paid to execute these projects and not divert most of it into their personal accounts. Regardless of whatever 'good deeds' they have done in the past.
I don't hear this sort of thing when Fashola is discussed. Why? I think its just the levels of glitter he can arrange. Maybe Uduaghan just needs to get his PR going, because he is every bit as good as Fashola. Delta state has metamorphosed in just a few short years.
mikeansy: Donald Duke will never be the product of PDP's horsetrading. That horsetrading never produce competent candidates. The Kingmakers will only produce fools they can teleguide.
His taking the bull by the horn and running on another platform is in itself a demonstration of real leadership. All this candidates they keep springing up from PDP none can compare Donald.
He should run, if he fails so be it. It is better for him to run and fail than to look himself in the mirror every morning saying "I refused to do something about Nigeria out of cowardice".
You have fallen for Dukes idealism, but we need cold, hard headed practicality at this time.
That he will not be the product of PDP's horse trading, does not take away from the fact that the trade is going on anyway. I would like to know how Duke intends to counter or quash that trade, because it is the only trick worth pulling. "Zoning" is the measuring bar by which the country will fail or succeed, it is the defining characteristic of the old politics we wish to see the back off; everything else must hang of defeating it. Nobody can create a better Nigeria without defeating the old forces, how is Duke going to approach that without any machinery on the ground or strategies in place?
igbo boy: Even though development no reach my side of the state, I would still give it to Uduaghan and Ibori (despite corruption allegations) based on the fact that some visible changes have indeed occured in the last 10years,
Hopefully, the next gov (or other representational power) would come from your parts. Representation is the best way to spread development.
Why don't you visit Delta state and then do a simple comparison of our transport system (urban roads, facilities, vehicle quality, airports etc) to any part of the country you choose?
Pharoh: What has he really done for the education sector apart from this teaching hospital? what about electricity, farming, youths development and industrialization of the state economy. Hope he has also performed infrastructure wise he has a development blue print he his following.
Uduaghans greatest shortcoming is not having a PR machine like Fashola's, otherwise he would be right up there with him (maybe, even beyond him). The video below should answer a quite a few of your questions (building has begun). Delta state is getting to be the new heaven.
texazzpete: Sometimes, i think Nigerians deserve their leaders. Your Governor receives billions of Naira monthly to ensure good governance, develop the state and meet the needs of his people. 'visible changes' over a period of 10 years doesn't cut it. Especially when there are extremely strident allegations of corruption against the Governor.
What are the "extremely strident allegations"? Or are you just making things up? Its funny, we never see you guy's when corruption is discussed in Lagos (another performing place), but you have a way of popping up pretty sharpish at the mention of "delta". Abi you de work for Shell?
Donald Duke is in danger of burning himself out by becoming a perpertual presidential candidate. The simple truth is that, his timing is totally wrong, he will face an impossible struggle to appeal across the country. How will he cope with "zoning" for example? It all seems too vague, where is his party machinery?
