Politics › Re: Lagos State Is Sinking In A Sea Of Debt by Beaf: 11:26pm On Jun 13, 2010 |
Firstly, I don't believe the debt figures given for Lagos. Secondly, money makes money. There is no successful business without some degree of risk and debt. Fashola has a lot of foresight and should be left to modernise Lagos. Why can't people be satisfied? Who would you prefer as governor, Akala or Yerima? Be ecstatic with what you've got. Fashola's only mistake has been employing that toad called babapupa. |

obailala: PDP presidential zoning arrangement died the day Yaradua died.
If power goes to the north in 2011, NO NORTHERNER, I mean NO NORTHERNER will get into that position and relinquish power in 2015. Whoever enters would definitely want to stay till 2019 and by so doing, the zoning arrangement would be violated.
It is either the southerners break the zoning arrangement in 2011 or the northerners break it in 2015.
So who will be the mugu?
Nice one! |

I am wary of these northern radio stations. We Igbos have not forgotten the role they played during the Pogroms in the north. This is not a laughing matter. No, that time has passed. What we have now are acts of desperation by those who wish to usurp the term "Northerner" for their selfish gains and to the embarrassment of the many. You would be surprised at how similar the hopes, dreams and aspirations between major parts of the North, South, East and West are. All that is required is for a group to tap in effectively. |
Politics › Re: Govt And Private Oil Companies Should Relocate From Lagos To Nigerdelta by Beaf: 10:14pm On Jun 13, 2010 |
pifa: Beaf,
You know very well from my previous posts that I fully support the struggles of the ND against the r_a.p.e of their resources to feed Abuja and many of the parasite northern states. But the leadership of the ND and other oil-producing states must also share the blame for their retarded development. It is one thing for MEND to blow up a federal building in Abuja, but it served no useful purpose to kidnap expat oil workers for ransom other than the agenda of a few criminal elements within MEND. We must recognize that the ND people, too, have contributed their share to the environmental disasters that have rendered their once fertile land unfit for farming and human habitation.
When the oil boom of the 80’s was in full gear, expats abound in the oil producing states. What drove the expats away? If the governors of these states were farsighted, they could have seen the potential of using their proximity to the oil wells to develop their land for industries that rely on crude oil for raw materials. They could do this without taking a dime from the federal government, without owning THE OIL THAT COMES FROM THEIR LAND and without funding these industries themselves.
But they had to provide and encourage an atmosphere that is conducive to the commercial interest of industries that would want to establish facilities there. They had to provide good roads, power for the industrial areas (to circumvent the federal government's prerogative over electricity production), enact business-friendly laws and guarantee public safety. They had to developing an educational system that would provide the workforce these companies would need as they multiplied in number.
This is what Lagos is doing. The state government under Fashola has made it its mandate to clear the way for private industries to strive and, in doing so, generate revenues for the government to develop the state (never mind the ill-advised and silly desire to turn Lagos into a mega city). Lagos has determined that it and only it stands in the way of its development, despite the yoke of an overbearing federal government on its shoulders. Their concept is rather straightforward: generate your IGR (internally Generated Revenue) and propel your own growth.
There was no reason the ND and other oil producing states could not do as Lagos. But when you’ve had governors like Ibori, the fella who slipped away from justice in the UK in the guise of a woman, and the ones who wasted money on useless theme parks, you will understand why the ND may be condemned to an impoverished existence. What about Goodluck Jonathan? Wasn’t his wife caught with $2m in her possession while trying to board a plane for the UK (this is what I read last week, so correct me if I am wrong). Were ND citizens ever offered an explanation for her attempt to smuggle such a large amount of cash out of the country? Isn’t Jonanthan a ND indgene? I understand one of the first things he did when he became president was to send his wife to Dubai for medical treatment.
Surely, this is not what Ken Saro Wiwa died for. Thanks for a pretty decent response. I must apologise for some of my words. You talk about an oil boom in the 80’s and at the same time implore us to query our elected officials. Not stopping there, you provided quite a juicy list of criminals that we must hold to book. I resent the example of Jonathans wife, though, she was never found guilty by a court and she has never been in govt. Lets keep it decent. What I find really strange about your analysis is the fact that in the 80’s, not only did my state NOT exist; but from 1984, we had military rule, first by Buhari, then Babangida. So what elected official is to be held responsible? What governor? Your whole argument is very terribly flawed. Was there an oil boom in the 80's? |

In fact, the law to protect children from primitive se'xual predators and paedophiles is so wide that YOU TOO are guilty and liable to jail or a fine, for supporting the paedophile, Yerima.

A man at his height of Bankole's rulership is not expected to debase his position by invoking religion as a defense.
The number 4 man in this country is expected to promote the constitution over all else. Dimeji is a huge letdown and should go, if only for appealing to base instinct. He has become a security risk. |

Otherwise, how can you not think straight? If your Yerima had conducted he "marriage" in Egypt, he would be in jail by now. Go check it out, its a crime in Egypt. Are you more Muslim than Egypt? Politics › Re: Yerima Cannot Continue In Senate, Says Nba by Beaf(op): 4:20pm On Jun 13, 2010 |
revomind: People should learn to look at issues objectively. You cannot come across as fair or sincere if, before you take a stand on this Yerima issue, you do not take into cognisance the provisions of the religion he subscribes to and the cultural practices of his people who have sent him to the senate to represent them. However, the real issue is if he has broken any law. If he has, we must consider if the law conflicts with other laws or codes. As far as we, even if only theoretically, practice a federal system of govt, the matter is never going to be a straight forward one. To that extent, the matter can only be decided by the Supreme Court for final interpretation. In my opinion, that part of the Child Rights Act that pegs the minimum age of marriage at 18 should have never been part of the law. The bitter truth is that aspect of the law does not conform with the cultural practice of a sizeable part of the country. It was only a matter of time before a loony like Yerima brought it to the fore of national discourse. We can shout ourselves hoarse about VVF, the reality is that up north, there are great-grandmothers in their 50s and 60s. They do not complain and as any student of jurisprudence would tell you, laws have to be seen as in line with moral codes of the people they seek to govern before they are accepted. This controversy should be seen as an opportunity to take another look into our law books and also to rearrange our structure in tune with true federalism. In Egypt, Yerima's action is a crime. And Egypt is almost 100% Muslim, please, this has NOTHING to do with religion. The constitution is over and above any Nigerian tradition or practice. For example, human sacrifice was allowed in several societies, but today it is rightly condemned as barbaric. Marriage to children falls into the same category; lets not forget that Yerima "divorced" a 15 year old to make way for a 13 year old. There might be grandmothers who aren't complaining, but the fact is that there is a huge educational gap and we owe it as a duty to enlighten those who see no wrong in such practices. A girl at 13, should be in school and is still very much a child, both physically and emotionally. There is nothing more dangerous than questioning the constitution for religious reasons, otherwise, the likes of Helen Ukpabio too would be able to tell you that she is right to toture "child witches", because her faith permits it. It is the duty of each and every one of us to obey the law. Above and beyond that, it falls on each and every one of us to show love to our fellow humans and save every last one of our children. |
