Get it right, I made no reference to Egyptian "secular" law. In Saudi, there is nothing wrong with what Yerima did. In the Northern part of Nigeria, there is also none of your imagined disgust, its actually a norm in the north, again, do not use the standards of one culture to judge another.
How is his age difference with the girl immoral?? you must tell me what makes it immoral!! and then we must apply it universally!!! we must then put bench marks, 10 yr age difference is ok, 30 yr age difference is not etc!! Then we must then explain why one age bench mark is ok and why the other is not!!!

The only people really angry about this are European serving southern media of Nigeria. In your village, before your contact with Europeans, what was the average difference in age between a man and a woman at the time of the weddinghuh answer this.
In America, Anna Nicole married the oil tycoon Howard when she was 26 and he was 84, no problem with that but because it involves Islam, what you imbeciles love to hate, its now pedophilia! No one can explain to me why age difference is immoral or wrong!! I dare you, all you say is that is wrong, why is it wronghuh? AS long as shes able to be intimate physically, then there is no problem, your white masters are busy handling sex at 13, 14 and 15
Sorry, but you are actually sounding incoherent. Who gives a fck with what any "culture" says. Is culture above the law? I asked you for your thoughts barbaric cultural practices like, tormenting "child witches" and human sacrifice; you somehow failed to answer. I wonder why? If a cultural practice is barbaric as child marriages are, then then culture needs to be booted into the modern age.
I don't care what reasons you pluck from thin air to justify ra'ping a child. Yerima is guilty under Nigerian law and must be jailed.

There is no disgust in Northern Nigeria about child ra'pe? Thats a big lie! Do you think your village makes up the whole of Northern Nigeria? have you heard of child marriages in Kwara, Benue, Plateau, Southern Kaduna etc? Charlie, you're just shooting your mouth!
I notice you have a way of fishing for the most child abusing cultures to latch unto. Do you have an identity problem, are you ashamed to be Nigerian? Cos I can't understand the references to Saudi and other foreign crap to justify events in Nigeria. Also. you really love to live in medievial times, forgetting the rest of us have moved on and left you behind.
Stop clutching at straws. Ra'pe is ra'pe, and its even worse when the victim is a child; it is unnaceptable when patriachal society wickedly codifies it into "culture".

Stone Yerima.

13 year olds are getting pregnant in America right? Why don't you get one pregnant and see what happens to you and please don't  forget to tell them your culture allows it.
Yerima is a dirty old man, you cannot legally marry a thirteen year old in Nigeria, period. It is not only against the law, it is also morally reprehensible.
He will never try it, because they will jail the daylight out of his arse!

Why do people like gadogado always talk about Western and Arab Worlds, whereas we are Nigerian?
Is this some sort of identity conflict or inferiority complex?

Yerima introduced sharia and since then people hands have been chopped of etc. What is the punishment for ra'pe under sharia? Stoning to death?
Lets apply it to the basta'rd paedophile, Yerima! grin

Also, i wanted to add that if a girl in America or in Europe can physically have intimacy at the age of 13, 14 or 15 then why not an egyptian? since i think whats bothering most people is the girl is too  young and cannot handle the sexual activity. As for those claiming, shes too young for him, look into you're own cultures before you were brain washed my colonialism, were your people, yorubas et al. marrying their age mates? what was the typical age of a man and a woman when they got married in say yoruba societies in the 1500'shuh? For you to now bring in age difference into this is idiocy at it worst!! Age difference is a concept born out of western culture which came about during times of economic prosperity!! It is a WESTERN concept!! Ask yourself, why does it really matter? why does it matter how old the guy is? in America, Anna Nicole Smith married Howard when she was 26 and he was in his 80's. Does age difference really matter in a truly moral context, is it immoral if im 20 years older than my wifehuh if so, why is it immoral, this you must answer!!
If you're one of those saying that its coz shes too young to make her own decision as to whether she wants to get married yet or not, well that is also a western concept, western culture places premium on individualism, you should NOT use the standards of one culture to judge another culture! cultures evolve at their own pace and in their own beliefs!! some societies are communal, the family decides whether your old enough and who you should marry!! Since you dont love that girl more than her family loves her then what is your own therehuh??
This is how they've lived for thousands of years and you cannot criticize them, you have no right to!! Who are you to now say that it is wrong?? because your colonial masters say so!
We aren't interested in what little girls do with little boys in America or Europe. What alarms us, is what 50+ year old men do with girl children in Nigeria. In any case, the Egyptians you refer to have made it a crime for a paedophile like Yerima to have anything to do with marrying anybodyunder 18. Yeah! Thats Egyptian law!

The import of your arguments is exactly nil. A child is a child anywhere in the World and ra'pe is certainly not a Western concept.
More than the above, it is morally wretched for anybody to promote rape, child molestion and other forms of criminality for "cultural" reasons. How about human sacrifice? No? How about child witches? No?

We can rant irresponsibly about colonial masters and whatnot, but the simple fact remains; a crime that utterly disgusts the vast majority of Nigerians has been committed.

The paedophile, Yerima should be castrated and jailed.

i have been saying the same thing, you know those oil companies have a double standard, in African nations where there is oil, they go there and take the oil and mess up the place, but in Alaska and other European nations, you wouldn't even know they have oil, of course the problem do-sent just lie with the oil companies, but they play a huge part
That is the sad part of the story. But a collective inferiority complex is a fundamental underlying truth to where we find ourselves today as a country.
While Obama and the US have shown quite robustly that they are ready to reap the heart out of any oil company, no matter how big, if they threaten US environement, jobs, health and wellbeing; we in Nigeria would rather p!mp each other cheaply to the lowest foreign bidder.

The oil companies have a double standard only because, those in power, as well as a huge proportion of our population, see themselves as a rung below the foreigners running the oil companies; therefore, we let them have our wives and kids to do as they please.

Lets note hear that its not just $20 billion set aside for compensation, there are also criminal investigations going on. BP people will be jailed, as soon as negligence is proven. But right here on this thread, a "fellow Nigerian" wished that Niger Deltans would be herded into cattle cars and into the gas chamber, just for being victims.

This sudden bump up for agriculture portends something. Could the missing link be the 200 billion agric fertilizer loan money? Questions!! cool

How can a country that spends $3 billion annually on the importation of the most basic food items, claim that 42% of its GDP is due to the very same agriculture? In other words, rather than enrich the country, we get poorer by $3 billion US every year from agriculture. So what sort of voodoo math would create a contribution of 42% to our GDP? huh
My simple take on this sh*t is that someone is manufacturing figures to cover up "something" in the near future.

2011: Northern minorities say no monolithic North
Tuesday, 22 June 2010 01:18 Tunji Olawuni

…say Nigerians should determine if Jonathan can contest
Politicians of Northern minorities’ extraction on Monday reacted to some Northern leaders who insisted on zoning of the presidency to the North, declaring that there is no monolithic North. They said only Nigerians should determine if President Goodluck Jonathan can contest next year’s election.

Former Senate President Ameh Ebute, who addressed the press on behalf of the politicians from the minority states under the aegis of National Movement for Equality and Change, said that the minority ethnic nationalities of the North contributed more to keeping the country together.

Northern leaders that included former President Ibrahim Babangida and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had, last week, after their meeting insisted that the presidency should be zoned back to the North and raised three committees to ensure the emergence of a Northern candidate.

The Northern minorities, however, reminded the Northern leaders that “the numerical strength and perpetual retaining of power in the North is not possible without a united North.

“The larger population of the North says no to primitive sectional domination and all divisive tendencies. Just as the Northern minority ethnic nationalities were in the past ignorantly manipulated into supporting parochial personal and sectional agenda of the few in the North, the South South also allied and partnered with the North ignorantly to promote the parochial agenda of the few”.

They maintained that President Jonathan did not seize power from the North but rather emerged through Divine Providence, saying “he is proving himself a listening president who is also committed to ensuring a free and fair election or the achievement of true democracy in Nigeria.

“Nigerians should be allowed to decide through the ballot box whether or not he should continue after 2011 to further democratise the country and provide good leadership and development”.

Northern Presidential Impunity
Written by Uzor Maxim Uzoatu
Monday, 21 June 2010 13:56

After the so-called revenge coup of 1966 some Northern hotheads had actually wanted to secede (araba) from Nigeria until it was made clear to them that power had reverted back to their region. Ever since, all makes of Northern wannabes have latched on to the born-to-rule mentality that makes the region quite parasitic in the Nigerian scheme of things. Power thus becomes an end in itself, aimed at consuming things produced from other zones of the country. Now in a tribal move to counter the alleged ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan to contest for the presidency in 2011, some 150 top politicians from the North converged in Abuja to plot on how to enforce the contentious zoning of the presidency to the North in 2011 based on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) zoning arrangement, which they claim cedes power to the region till 2015.

Former military President Ibrahim Babangida, who madly wants to return to power as civilian president in 2011, led the list of attendees. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar who equally lusts after the top job was also there. National Security Adviser, General Aliyu Gusau, who also wants the highest job in the land was there to identify with the region at the meeting. Mallam Adamu Ciroma, Gen. David Jemibewon, Gen. Mohammed Magoro, Air Cmdr. Hamza Abdullahi and former PDP Chairman Audu Ogbeh also made their eminent presences felt.

According to some strategic sources, only one agenda was up for deliberation at the meeting, and it’s simply this: how the North will reclaim power and keep it till 2015.

The catch remains how the North will negotiate with other regions to ensure that the “gentleman's agreement” is respected.

It should be recalled here how the late Alhaji Wada Nas had warned his beloved Northern region that his people would forever regret double-crossing the Southeast in the so-called zoning arrangement back in 1999. Power has by divine order come on the lap of a man from the South-South who happens to come from the Eastern tripod that used to form the Nigerian nation. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan cannot be denied now without something giving eternally within the ambit of the cohesion of the entire country.

Promoters of the zoning ruse will have us believe that President Olusegun Obasanjo had done the South’s two terms of eight years based on the agreement, and that the North is expected to produce the president for eight years till 2015, notwithstanding the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua on May 6, 2010 after three years on the saddle. This takes no notice of the tripod that used to be Nigeria and the donkey years that the North had ruled the country without moving anybody forward, least of all their own very people. Even Obasanjo who allegedly benefitted from the zoning arrangement has denied its existence!

It was therefore with their tails between their legs that the Northern titans met at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, from around 8 in the night till the wee hours. Of course power-seekers hardly ever sleep. For these people, there is no life at all whatsoever outside power. Five delegates from each of the 19 states of the North attended due to the urgent need to reclaim what belonged to the North: the Nigerian Presidency. The meeting did not end until about midnight, with former Senate President Prof. Iyorcha Ayu flanked by Babangida and Atiku addressing the press. Talk of Northern solidarity. If the Southerners should behave this way, it would then amount to: To thy own tents, all tribesmen of Nigeria!

It fell on poor Ayu, a former self-advertised “comrade radical” to tell Nigerians that the meeting was not targeted against any individual or zone but that it’s an effort at strengthening national cohesion and peace. According to him, the aim is to prevail on concerned individuals and groups to respect the agreed template on zoning.

It is indeed remarkable that when Ayu was asked if the agenda of the meeting is to pave the way for the emergence of a Northern candidate, he queried: “what is wrong with that?” His justification for it was that “after all, the person who was president between 1999 and 2007 was not a Northerner.”

The arrogance of the so-called North amounts to crass impunity. The thinking that the North will forever pull the wool over the eyes of the entire country as it pleases has had its day. The time is now to call the bluff of the Northern atavists. This crude tribalism is idiotic! It all amounts to arrant Northern nonsense!

What worries me most about these latest Nigerian figures is the way they have jumped out of thin air like something invoked by TB Joshua!
Every body with a little sense knows for definite that Nigeria is a mono-product economy. Just a couple of years ago, it was known that oil accounted for 90%+ of our GDP. So what happened that its suddenly 16% percent, when did we rapidly diversify our economy and why did someone forget to inform the World? I ask that, because we are still a mono-product economy, indeed the title of the current thread makes it plain as day; "Nigerian Economy Grew 7.23% In First Quarter On Oil".
And to think I was of the opinion that Yar Adua was called Baba Go Slow, because absolutely nothing was happening! Not knowing that economic diversification was rocketing ahead, in fact while Yar Adua slept his way through 2.5 years, the economy simply reacted and diversified! Wow!

The growth of our GDP doubled in a year from oil alone. . . At 16? Very strange! Maybe the next miracle indeed!

Every authority seems to have their own figures for the percentage of oil in Nigeria's GDP, eg CIA 's  the World Factbook kindly puts it at about 50%. We know it is much more. Someone is actually funny enough to claim that agriculture acounts for 42% of our GDP; I am yet to see money from yam sales being distributed in Abuja. I am yet to see the smiling farmers from Kafanchan or Obolo-Afor; or maybe the sudden increase in their contribution to the Nigerian economy somehow doesn't translate to more money in their pockets.

We don't even know how many Nigerians there are (as distinct from goats and cows, which have been valid statistics in each of our cencus's to date).
Maybe we will soon have strategic yam reserves, rather than the current strategic oil reserves. grin grin grin grin

Rubbish!

There are soldiers always present to shoot trespassers and it has always been so, in fact the oil companies arm, equip and pay our soldiers to do their bidding. @Beaf.

Well done brother - for holding the fort. That I do not frequent this site again does not mean the issues staring us in the face in the ND cannot be discussed anymore. It's interesting how the ND issues keeps popping up again and again on NL. Every bit of what you stated in here (which are in every sense statements of facts) have been discussed years back - back in the days myself, Owo and other true sons of the ND ''roam'' NL to get our voice heard. I'm not going extinct sha - like the dinos grin. Keep that flag flying.

They (other Nigerians) cannot see any sense in the fact that the present arrangement in the country does not favour the well being and development of the average Niger Deltan. What have the ND benefitted (compared to what we now see elsewhere in Abuja that was a savannah grassland 20 years ago) from the present parasitic arrangement since Oloibiri-1 was drilled, completed and hooked up for production in 1958? Is it the peanuts doled out to very hungry and famished people that they're arguing about?
They talk ill of the ''leaders'' in our areas. Why can't they take away the log in their eyes first before pointing at the other person's ailment? Aren't their leaders the masterminds of stealing, corruption, nepotism, tribalism and all the ills that's going to bring this country to its kneels?

I'm tired jare. I will just repeat all I've said in the past. No sense wasting precious time and energy now. That time will come when we will all look at these issues - cos I know that every right thinking person knows what's good and right for us to do to move on in peace, and address them.
Thank you! But, my broda, wetin man go do? You guy's showed how to put up stellar arguments.

Yes, we have the same discussions over and over as you've pointed out. There's a new vulture party every now and again and its always the same old faces that show up, some of them brimming with hatred (why, is difficult to fathom). It is energy sapping but we have to stick with it.

Its funny to the point of being ridiculous, the way "they talk ill of the ''leaders'' in our areas". You would think that they had incredible leaders, only to look and see all 36 states headed to Abuja, begging bowl in hand. . .
You would expect these brave folk to pluck up the courage of 7 devils, swallow their own medicine, walk up to their leaders and demand to know why on Gods Earth they are parasites. But do they? No, they find it easy to dump on the very minorities on whom the corporate existence of the nation depends; just because we are minorities. How brave!

Please pass by more often, there's always a gem or two in your words.

You claimed to have made a terrible racist comment because of your flawed opinion of one man. I am amazed.

Please cut the to and fro. I really am not interested.

^Wonder over to the nearest bin and hop in. F**king toy Hitler.
Shameless racist. Tell us some more about your dreams of rounding up and gassing all ND people (only thing is you will end up gassing your mother, father and your children). cool

Dis Guy:
My area can survive comfortably on its own actually in fact re-jigging the allocation will make it more stable politically and people from private sector will be more interested in the politics of the state instead of career politicians

By all definition many states are not parasit but getting exactly want is written to them by the same constitution your reps have not challenged- they've only managed to raise their voice until some cheques have been passed their way
I don't know which is more disturbing; the northerners cattle rarer in the house that keep threatening your over-educated reps or the money hungry reps from the most deprived area that keep quiet whenever they get land/money/suit and another honorary degree/title  grin
If they can survive comfortably on their own, why be parasites? shocked
Yes, sorting out the federation will definitely help everyone and we should all work toward it or we will only be postponing a very evil day. If oil finishes today, then what?

As for Northerners lording it over ND people, it would seem they have lorded it over your educated people too (except you are a Northerner).
