Reps tell Bankole to resign By Festus Owete and Ini Ekott June 10, 2010 03:38AM Members of the House of Representatives cutting across the six geographical zones yesterday gave the Speaker, Dimeji Bankole, seven days to resign, or be disgraced out of office. The representatives who call themselves the ‘progressives,' said at a press conference in Abuja that Mr Bankole's leadership is corrupt, inept and high-handed. Armed with what they claimed were incriminating documents, the lawmakers said Mr Bankole's leadership led to an unprecedented rift between both arms of the National Assembly and brought the House to disrepute. Members of the group include: Dino Melaye (PDP, Kogi); George Daika (PDP, Plateau); Bitrus Kaze (PDP, Plateau); Austin Nwachukwu (PDP, Imo); Ehiogie West Idahosa, Anas Adamu (PDP, Jigawa); and Independence Ogunewe (PDP, Imo). Others are Solomon Awhinawhi (PDP, Delta); Ralph Okeke (PDP, Anambra); Darlington Okereke (PDP, Ebonyi); and Asita Honourable (PDP, Rivers). A litany of complaints "We hereby, therefore, in strong terms call on Bankole to resign immediately as the speaker of the representatives within 7 days," said Mr Melaye, who spoke for the group. "We are asking him to resign for the following reasons: one, corruption in leadership; two, because of his leadership style, which today is responsible for the rift, disagreement, and disharmony between the two brothers in the National Assembly, the Senate and the Reps. The relationship between the two has never been this bad. Three, we are also asking him to resign because of his high handedness, disrespect for members; four, his frequent breach of the rules of the House; five, his sweeping and unsubstantiated comments capable of causing disaffection among the various arms of government." He said the speaker had once openly accused civil servants and the civil service of gross corruption, but failed to substantiate the claims when the then head of service, Ama Pepple, challenged him on the allegations. "And I want to say that, failure to comply with our call in the interest of the Nigeria and Nigerians, especially the masses of this country, this group has overwhelming evidence, information, everything you see here, they are incriminating records that we will publish, give to you the media, and assure you in seven days, we are going to write a petition that every member including the ones on recess will sign, physically, personally and we will send it to the EFCC, the ICPC, the NSA, the SSS and indeed, the headquarters of his political party." Bad publicity Mr Melaye, said under the leadership of Mr Bankole, the sterling qualities, which the House exhibited since 1999, have been lost, stressing that the public perception of the lower chamber has declined. "We are here this afternoon to unequivocally say without fear of favour, that the House of Representatives, you read about in 1999; the House of Representatives that West Idahosa was a member of; the House of Representatives in 2000; the House of Representatives with its sterling qualities exhibited during (Ghali) Na'Abba; the House of Representatives that was laboriously built by (Aminu) Masari, is not the same today," he said. "The public perception of the House has ingloriously declined. We used to be the pacesetters of legislative practice in this country, but it is obvious that we have been overtaken because of the ineptitude of leadership (and) because of all these negative manifestations, the House under Bankole has nose-dived and has lost its earned positive reputation." No child play Asked if the group will not, like in the past, back down on its demand that Mr Bankole should go, Mr Melaye said, "This is no child play. We have resolved to clean our House. We have resolved and are determined that he who comes to equity must come with cleans hands. And we have resolved that these evidence will be given to each of you and we are ready to defend it anywhere and anytime. This is not a secret presentation. We are very, very sure of the facts. These documents are incontrovertible." He said even though Mr Bankole will as usual say that the documents are fake, they intend to challenge him to produce the original. Collaborating Mr Melaye's claims, Mr Idahosa (PDP Edo state), said the House has never had it so bad in the last 10 years. "Many of you know that when we talk about the history of the House, I have the privilege of writing the rules together with my colleagues in 1999," he said. "And thereafter, I have served (Salisu) Buhari, Na'Abba, Masari (Patricia) Etteh, and I will say, I have the misfortune of serving in this era. We have never had it so bad. We have never had such a legislative tyranny as we do have now. We have never in this House turned our Ethics and Privileges Committee into a hunting machine of fellow members.'' ‘Ostrich display' In a swift reaction to the demand for Mr Bankole's resignation, the House leadership said Mr Melaye and his group misled the perceptive public with their proverbial ‘ostrich display' by masquerading selfish tendencies for public interest. "Their activities could best be a swan song but they are advised to avail themselves with the allowances of House rules and extant provisions of the relevant statues," said House spokesperson, Eseme Eyiboh, in the statement. "The present leadership is a creature and creation of the generality of the House and the prevalent synergy culminating in the successful constitution review vindicates the acceptability of the leadership. Those ‘progressives' should vacate their theatre or be absolved and come to join other discernible members to complement the current legislative engagements for executive action." http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Home/5578641-146/reps_tell_bankole_to_resign_.csp |

I am shocked at the sort of stunts Nigerian men in power are prepared to perform! "Challenging God?!" Come on! Yesterday, it was the cabals village fool, Aondoakaa kissing arse like a bastar'd; today it is Yuguda (who married his way up the cabal ladder). It is shocking! Now wonder Nigeria never makes progress. If you ask my opinion, these goons should be cooling off in federal dungeons or lined along Bar Beach to fulfill Sanusi's wet dreams . |
Yuguda: Challenging Jonathan is like fighting God 06.09.2010 The debate on whether President Goodluck Jonathan should contest the 2011 presidential election should not arise at all, says Bauchi State Governor Malam Isa Yuguda. He speaks in an interview with a group of journalists including Imam Imam in Abuja. Excerpts: In spite of the economic meltdown, your administration embarked on several projects in virtually all sectors. How do you cope with the funding? We have been very prudent with our finances. When I came in and inherited over N20billion debt portfolio, I had to run to Abuja because some of the debt obligations were such that deductions were made from source. I also had to move to the management of the various commercial banks that the State owed and we had to convert those overdrawn facilities to long term-loans and giving my experience in the banking industry which was handy, it was handled. They saw to our own point of view because we couldn’t have moved the state an inch. if that was what we were faced with. So, we had to restructure most of the debt and smoothen the cash flow so that we could do projects. And the first year after restructuring those debts, we had a deficit budget in 2008. When we were budgeting in 2008, we had a deficit of N10 billion which we borrowed and there was an absolute need for that borrowing because we had to fix the schools, we had to fix the hospitals, there was no way we would have produced money without part of budgeting. In the event that you don’t have money to finance your deficit, you borrow or float a bond. So we used that as a take-off and we were very successful in the interventions we made. The state specialist hospital that you saw which was converted to a teaching hospital, by the time we came, there was only one generator that was 18 years old; there was no power in the hospital so, I bought them two 5KVA generating sets. There was no water in the hospital; in short we had to break so many roads to fix the water system into the hospital. You will be shocked to know that people used to take water from wells and the entire hospital was engulfed with foul odour. We sank boreholes, we rehabilitated most of the wards and we built new ones including the new accident and emergency centre which is a mini-hospital, because there is everything that a hospital has in that new emergency centre ranging from X-Ray, theatre rooms, intensive care, consulting rooms, pharmacy and many others. So, it is a mini-hospital that is considered the best accident and emergency centre in the country. We also built an intensive care unit after building two operating theatres; the intensive care unit keeps at least three patients alive at any given moment. You have seen the equipment, in fact, PhD students in pharmaceutical sciences and other physical sciences normally come for their research in Bauchi and using the laboratory there. So, we had to manage properly what we inherited, manage the debt portfolio to smoothen our cash flow to be able to do what we did. We have noticed that in terms of performance you have recorded some achievements. But your problem seems to be more political than service delivery. What can you say to that? That is why it is good to have people like you who are the conscience of the society to go out to check if those that are elected are doing the right thing or not; to check whether we are being judged right or wrong or whether we deserve the kind of criticism we receive from the pages of the newspapers. The criticisms of public officers are so widespread in this country, that I fear a time will come when you will have to beg people to come and run for president or for governorship seats and they will not accept. That is why your own generation needs to work hard to redefine what politics should be, what journalism should be in Nigeria and the kind of human beings that should be our leaders. This is because the mere fact that you are not comfortable with somebody or out of jealousy, you begin to say so much uncomplimentary remarks about the person. The day I was sworn in, I had 99% popularity in Bauchi, but I am very sure by the time I left that stadium after my swearing-in, my popularity would have dropped to 50%. Merely hearing the siren of a new governor, somebody may feel sad that Yuguda has become governor even though he might be the same person who slept in the polling booth to ensure that Yuguda won. So, this pull-him-down syndrome in our country has to stop. We have to appreciate that leadership is from God and once he gives that leadership, anyone daring that leadership is daring God. (Today) anybody that says he is daring President Goodluck Jonathan is daring God because it is God that gave him on that seat; He took away former President Yar’Adua’s life to make Jonathan the new president. And if you say you are daring Isa Yuguda because I defected from a party and defeated that party and won with an overwhelming majority, you are daring God. It is well known to you that I defeated a sitting governor who was contesting for a Senate seat, I asked my Special Assistant (SA) to contest and he defeated a sitting governor to the seat. The same SA is today the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory; he was my SA for five years; so if you say you are daring my seat, you are daring God, because I did not put myself here. The popularity rate I got is from God, I didn’t have the money to spray to make people vote for me. If you were in Bauchi that time, you will weep as women went to INEC with their babies and they slept outside to wait for the vote to be counted; no soldier went into the place, only those who were carrying the ballot papers. Only those with the results were allowed in. When I defected to the PDP, the structure was dissolved because I brought a government into a party and the party was not the one that brought the government. Definitely, you would expect some complaints from those who brought the government in. It was my own structure that brought the government into power, so you don’t expect me to dovetail into a structure that didn’t bring me in. So, in most states, the experience was to dissolve the exco. So, when the exco was dissolved (in Bauchi), some of the members were very bitter that they were elected and they were dissolved. But they were elected yet their structure didn’t win elections and now they had a government free of charge and they didn’t want to let go. That is typical Nigerians for you, they don’t believe in live and let’s live and they don’t believe in accommodating one another’s interest. In life, we are all different human beings and the only way we can live is to accommodate each other’s weaknesses. Everybody has his own weakness and you can’t live together without accommodation. So, some people felt aggrieved for being relieved of their seats. I did not have a problem with anybody in PDP before I left PDP, I only had problem with the governor (Adamu Muazu) who didn’t want me to contest and he tried all his best through the chairman to deny me the ticket and flush me out of PDP. I was not fighting anybody in the PDP and I was not fighting the structure; all of them were my friends, my good friends for that matter. So, left to me I wouldn’t have bothered if they remain, after all I wasn’t the one who put myself here. Whether they are there or not if, God says I will continue being on this seat I will continue because they were there when I defeated all of them; all their candidates lost. And on the crisis with the ANPP too, there was no ANPP by the time I came into the party. Like I said, when I started my intervention, there was only one councillor in Bauchi that was ANPP; only one from the entire structure, from the governor to the National Assembly, state assembly, councillors, chairmen of local government, as everybody was PDP. And when I came back to the PDP, I came back with the same structure. So, we are not alien to PDP, in fact we are the original PDP people and I assure you I was about the sole financier of the PDP since I joined government. And before I joined government, I was a card-carrying member but I was a silent partner in the business because I was a banker. I did a lot to ensure that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo then emerged as the president in 1999. And I also did my best to ensure that Adamu Mu’azu emerged as our governor in Bauchi State. I am not a new man in PDP but rather, there are some of them whom I met, who we came back to PDP and met, who had gone out of PDP before us and stayed so many years and came back to the PDP, those same guys who pop in and out of the PDP and who never won elections in their life are the same guys that are haunting us today. But I don’t think the problems are insurmountable and in fact, the leadership of the party is in control of things. I am not scared of anybody and I am not so fussy about being at the service of my state and country. God in his own wisdom chooses who is to be a leader, and if he chooses me to continue leading Bauchi, nobody can stop it. And I am leading Bauchi with my conscience very clear and I have always said without fear or contradiction that I don’t have any skeletons in my cupboard. I rose from an officer in the banking industry to managing director; I have never been caught with any case of fraud in all the years I served in the bank. I served for five years as minister and when I was leaving as minister, I wrote to the president and I begged him to investigate me because there were so many petitions coming against my person. I begged former President, Olusegun Obasanjo and he acceded to my request and set up a committee to investigate me. I still have the letter he wrote me that as far as he was concerned, for the five years I served him, I had not committed any offence. So, that is the position and I assure you that come 2011, those who are making these rounds of noise, who God used me to take them to where they are today, but have decided for no reason to fight me, the world is there for them, the space is there for them, the avenues are there for them, let them come out and contest. As far as I am concerned, I am running under PDP and I am loyal to Mr. President being my president and the president under PDP, I am also loyal to my party. There is a debate in PDP regarding zoning, what is your opinion on that? It is not a question of opinion. Like I said, God has already made his own leader and the constitution has provided for people to contest for elections and the constitution has not provided for zoning, and if there is a gentleman agreement in parties where zonings are agreed, it is not constitutional as far as I am concerned and if they want to adhere to it, so be it. But like I said, I believe leadership is from the Almighty whether zoning or no zoning. Supposing I have not decamped to PDP, you would not have asked me this question because ANPP has no issue of zoning. If PDP says they want zoning and other parties say they don’t want zoning, then, let us go by what the constitution says. But if it is a gentleman agreement and people have agreed to do it, so be it, but it is not constitutional. And I must add that God in the book of faith says; ‘Let the best among you rule,’ the instruction didn’t say, ‘you are black or white or Yoruba or Hausa or Itsekiri, it says, let the best among you rule; it didn’t say Christian or Muslim. It says let the most equitable amongst you rule. That is the kind of leaders we should be looking for, not to be bogged down by issues of zoning. The PDP Reform Forum have come forward with a proposal which many say is aimed at reducing the influence of governors in the choice of delegates to the party convention. What is your take on this? As far as I am concerned, I haven’t seen anything wrong with the status quo to warrant any reform. For goodness sake, let the reformists go and contest for elections and let them win first before they talk of reforms. The president should be allowed to work, he should not be bogged down by all these problems. Let people go and test their popularity, let them be elected; when they are elected representatives of people then they can talk about reforms. There are some in the reform group, they may not have even voted in their lives, they may not have even seen a ballot box or gone to polling booth before and yet they are talking about reforms. Let us fine tune what we have and let us see where we are going wrong. What is wrong with what we have been doing before? Let us works as a family and let us prepare ourselves for 2011. We should not be talking about reform when we are entering an election year. 70 percent of those clamouring for the reform have never won elections; they don’t know what it takes to contest and win an election. I wish that you will challenge them to go and start elections in their constituencies, let them even try ward elections and let us see if they can win their wards and be ward chairmen before coming to the national level and talking about reforms. Not because you are chanced to be a minister then you start shouting from Abuja when nobody knows you in your neighbourhood. That is the tragedy of things that are happening in Nigeria. And they come here and make a lot of noise around the presidency and because they are always seen and heard you tend to believe them. But when they come home they don’t have anybody and politics is about people. They should tarry a bit, let us win in 2011, let us deliver our president first, let PDP gain presidency first, then, if there are problems, we can solve them out. But for you to start talking about reforms in an election year, I think something is wrong with you. http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=175372 |

2011: Why we oppose Jonathan’s candidature – ACF Cover Stories Jun 9, 2010 By Emeka Mamah KADUNA—THE Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, yesterday, gave reasons why the North would not support President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid to contest the 2011 elections, even as it said that it was solidly behind President Jonathan’s administration because “it is a product of fate and constitutionality.” The ACF position, however, came against the backdrop of support for Jonathan to vie for the 2011 Presidency by the former acting National Chairman of the Progressive Peoples’ Alliance, PPA, Comrade Adamu Song, who said the ACF was not speaking for his own part of the North in Adamawa State. Song also criticised Senator Kanti Bello, a PDP member from Katsina State and another chieftain of the All Nigeria People’s Party, ANPP, from Kano State, Alhaji Abdurrahaman Dan_Mallam, Danmadami Daura, on the issue. He said ACF and other notable northerners such as Senator Kanti Bello who accused Jonathan of betraying late President Umaru Yar’Adua had no mandate of northerners to speak for them on the matter. He said the only thing that could stop Jonathan from contesting was non-performance within the few months he had before the said election. Raging controversy The National Publicity Secretary of the ACF, Mr. Anthony Sani, made the organization’s position known on the raging controversy of whether the North would support President Jonathan to run or not, just as Song spoke in a separate interview on the matter. Sani said: “When you ask whether ACF and thus the North will go against President Goodluck Jonathan should he decide to run in 2011, you at once personalize the whole issue. To be sure, ACF is yet to receive any reports on this matter from its committee on political affairs. “However, it is necessary to point out that ACF is in full support of Goodluck’s government because, it is a product of both fate and constitutionality. President Jonathan decorated with Nigeria's highest honour, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR. “We pray the government succeeds in delivering on the promise of democracy. But, when it comes to the politics of rotation, ACF must consider the fact of history that the South has had eight years and overriding need to preserve gentleman agreements in our mechanism of community living often manifested in social contracts among individuals and groups. “The point being made is that a person who takes advantage of his vantage position to vitiate an agreement by his own party is most unlikely going to deliver on the promises of his own campaigns. “What is more, it is morally preposterous for ACF to go against zoning at a time it is the turn of the North, especially when regard is paid to the fact that there are qualified candidates in the North, who can provide national leadership by way of order and direction.” But accusing some ACF members of being mere “paper tigers”, Comrade Song challenged Senator Kanti Bello and the group among others to produce evidence that President Goodluck Jonathan betrayed late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua or keep quiet on the matter for ever. Betrayal of Yar’Adua He argued that some northerners as Senator Bello were being sentimental on the issue of Jonathan being sworn in as President on the death of the former President adding however, that they were speaking for themselves and not for the entire North. Song said rather than accuse Jonathan of betraying Yar’Adua, it was the former First Lady, Turai, and members of Yar’Adua’s kitchen cabinet that betrayed President Jonathan, as former Vice President. He said: “How did Jonathan betray Yar’Adua? Is Jonathan God that prescribed death for the former President? Yar’Adua’s death was not caused by anybody; it was natural. “It was Turai and members of Yar’Adua political family that actually betrayed Jonathan by taking his former boss to Saudi Arabia without informing him as the then Vice President, although they were there on a joint ticket. “People like Kanti Bello cannot speak for the North. He cannot even speak for his tiny community in Katsina State. The senator is representing a very minute fraction of the North in the National Assembly and he should not arrogate to himself the power to speak for the entire North. “The issue of zoning of political offices by the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, was a political exigency which is unconstitutional. Zoning of the Presidency trivializes the highest political office in the land. “Jonathan is the master of his own fate in this matter, because Nigerians will support him if he performs well between now and next year. It is not whether he is a northerner or a southerner. It is also not the problem of tribe or religion but performance. “In fact, if Jonathan does well, he will defeat or floor General Ibrahim Babangida who is a very formidable political opponent to him now in any election. Jonathan should not listen to people like Kanti Bello or some members of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, because they are paper tigers; they have no political bases of their own. “Most of them have not visited their communities in several years. They come and settle in Kaduna and without contact with their home states, stay here to dish out useless press statements about the North.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/06/09/2011-why-we-oppose-jonathan%E2%80%99s-candidature-%E2%80%93-acf/ |

I bet its been so long, you can't even find the shrivelled little thing with stadium lights. You are allowing frustration to destroy your soul! ![]() www.nairaland.com/attachments/180447_ROTFLMAO_gif3d0c775232c7f27cf80592785b9635b6 |
dayokanu:It was said during an interview with the Israeli ambassador by Wolf Blitzer (Situation Room). He was goading him into saying what Israel would do. I doubt you would see that on the CNN website, except the video is put up later. |
Kobojunkie:Who should be the one getting the praise then, IMF? Isn't Mugabe the President? Zimbabwe's economy has stabilized since a unity government formed by rivals President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai last year adopted the use of multiple foreign currencies to replace a worthless local dollar.Zim had to adopt unorthodox methods to pull their economy back. For years, Western underhand pressures had ensured that Zimbabwe could not trade internationally, running down and devaluing the local currency. Way out? Adopt the enemies currency and see if they will run themselves down. Neat stroke! |
