Why are you making up history?

The name "Palestine" is the cognate of an ancient word meaning "Philistines" or "Land of the Philistines".

Make sure to read the references as well;

Nobody said their neighbours relied on them. They were behind South Africa in food production but well ahead of the likes of Zambia, Malawi, Namibia and other countries in the region, some of which still EXPORT food today. If you are not aware that Zimbabwe used to EXPORT food then you missed an important fact. How, in any case, do you compare the situation that obtains today to being self-sufficient (as YOU twist it)? Anyway, I will leave you to continue your pursuit of this very crucial but overlooked detail now. I have already addressed the important issues on this thread in my response to Lwandle.
Really now!
Do you realise that Zimbabwe still exports food today? There was a drought that affected corn crop throughout South Africa, it was not just Zimbabwe that suffered, there were huge food problems in Malawi, Kenya etc, because corn is their staple food there.
Zim actually suspended the export of basic commodities like cooking oil, sugar, rice and some manufactured items. Are you saying Zim was importing those food items for re-export? Duh!

Since Zimbabwe still exports food today, why are they not still a "bread basket"? ==scratches head in awe==

From the posts so far, there are ex-diplomats, smart ppl and all that.what was so smart in swinging a stick at a man with a gun who knows that u are going to help his enemy,
@ beaf: let me ask u. If u are chilling in your house maybe in your villa and a group of vigillantees come banging on your door asking to search your house, And u know you are alone and u have nothing to hide, will u start by slapping them for trying to search your house hoping they won't beat u up because u are unarmed? There attack on the military men was preconcieved. They smart thing was not to swing knives at an armed soldier. Be it international waters or your private swimming pool. How many times have the Nigerian police stopped u on the way. Even when they are at fault did u bad mouth them not to talk of bring out a knife. If u have lived in a conflict zone u will know that everyone is scared and any form of agitation easily leeds to violence. Do u know how many times the humanitarian aid in Africa is confronted by rebels? They don't start any drama because they are bringing food to the suffering ppl. You have to be alive to give food and aid to others. If they actually wanted to help these ppl they won't go into a fight knowing that the aid may be seized.
Now that some are dead, others injured, hasn't the whole humanitarian idea been defeated because the content of that ship, be it food or cloths is not getting to any gazan. These guys where just out to push the boundry and see what will happen and in the process make a documentry.
Well like some posters said there were Americans and British in th ship, Yeah that is the more reason why you will have drama, They will be under the pretence that they know their rights and do something silly just to be on tv.
Do you know where I leave? Or you think you can apply jungle law everywhere? Vigilantes knocking my door for a search? My house?!. . . Out pops the the trusty ol' Heckler to blow their f**cking brains out.

Beaf I cannot begin to compete with you on Intelligence, you are too much for me.

But this article is looking at the news from a totally different angle.

For your info the international waters where the so called 'peace activists' encountered Israel commandos is a declared war zone.

Only a FOOL will venture into a war zone and despite all warnings, continue regardless of the consequences to enter a forbidden zone.

Despite my sympathy for the Palestinians, they are held hostage by a venomous breed of rabid dogs called Hamas, who use every opportunity to demonise the Israelites. It is a know fact that many shipments to Hamas in the past have contained missile parts and systems, grenades and assorted assault weapons.

Israel is under siege, a nation about the same size as Wales, hated on every side, despised by millions and threatened with annihilation by that lunatic of Iran, and you expect them to sit with their legs in the air and sip some coffee.
Have you ever wondered why you can't, for instance, drill oil in international waters? "Declared war zone" indeed! "Forbidden zone!" Rubbish!

Hair splitting? Shame, its the overlooked detail that sells the soul.
Zimbabwe has never been a food basket or bread basket in her region and that is plain fact. Being self sufficient (as you tried to twist it) is very far from being a basket your neighbours rely on, but hey! Western hype and a bare faced lies against fellow Africans are in order.

All this fixation with the phrase “food basket” which has little to with the discussion? If I understand you correctly, what you saying is that a country that produces enough food to feed itself and to export does not qualify as a “food basket” in its region, or that you have to be ahead of the likes of South Africa to qualify. Ok.
If you don't know the meaning of the phrase "food basket", you should really withhold commenting on it.

As for the rest of your argument, please ponder the following for a good few weeks (the same sort of deification has been happening to Mandela);

In 1994 Mugabe was appointed an honorary Knight Grand Cross in the Order of the Bath by Queen Elizabeth II

Mugabe is an African hero who was imprisoned for his passion of freedom from apartheid Rhodesia. He has gone on to show that Zimbabwe can develop and flourish on its own. They don't need the West.

I have posted enough videos of how more civilised countries react to immense provocation with dignity and wisdom. There are more than enough to see on youtube (if only you'll look) that show how robust actions are applied on troublesome civilian boats at sea by coast guard ships without undue incident, injury or loss of life.

the truth of the matter is that some people watch way too much press tv. israel acted illegaly but this is a matter of national security where it is a rule that the end justifies the means. why did the activists attack the soldiers? why?  you can say they had the right to but that does not explain why they had to. its one thing to repel thieves from entering your property but when you know you are faced by a force way more potentially deadly than you and without having anything to hide and knowing full well that your attack means the voyage is over which means that the people in Gaza will not get the aid, why would you attack them? what was the point they were trying to prove? that iron bars are stronger than bullets? or perhaps they were never really interested in getting any aid to Gaza but were on a mission to provoke israel into doing something rash?
Any functioning state is meant to be civilised enough to show restraint in the face of protesters actions. Who cares what Israels security issues are when you are an aid flotilla in international waters?

I will post another video of how far activists go with Japanese whaling boats, yet there has never been an incident involving the Japanese navy; despite the fact that the activists have sunk 10 whaling boats! Thats how its done by civilised functioning states.

Enjoy.

Why would Nigera attack a multi-national aid flotilla headed for Sao Tome and Principe with massive force, if not to display military might in a primitive way?

STOCKHOLM — Swedish crime writer Henning Mankell, author of the Wallander detective series, is one of nine Swedes held in Israel Monday after landing from a Gaza-bound aid flotilla attacked by Israeli commandos, Sweden's foreign ministry said.

Mankell "has been detained ,  In all, nine Swedes have been detained," ministry spokesman Anders Joerle told AFP, adding that they were not all being held at the same place and some had been imprisoned while others had simply been taken into custody.

"I think Henning Mankell is just being held in custody. I'm not sure. The Israelis have him in some kind of detention," he said.

Some of the Swedes had been very slightly injured, Joerle said, adding that some Swedes believed to have been travelling with the flotilla when it was attacked early Monday had yet to be reached.

The nine Swedes have reportedly been given the choice between accepting to be deported or to be tried in an Israeli court.

Earlier Monday evening, the foreign ministry countered a rumour set in motion at an anti-Israel demonstration in Oslo that Mankell had been shot in the attack, which left at least nine pro-Palestinian activists dead.

Pharoh:
He can't do more than that, everything will calm down after a few days just like the dubai hit.
That matter hasn't calmed down, its just off the front pages. If anything, the bad blood has intensified; one of those shot is an Australian and there are several Aussies from the flotilla in Israeli detention;

One Australian has been shot and four more are in Israeli detention after they were caught in a deadly clash over a humanitarian mission bound for Gaza.

The Australians were on board an aid flotilla trying to reach the Palestinian territory.

Nine people died when Israeli forces stormed the ships, sparking international condemnation. A 20-year-old Australian man has undergone surgery after being shot in the leg.

The incident has added further strain to the troubled relationship between Australia and Israel.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd spoke out against the violence and loss of life.

'The Australian government condemns any use of violence under the sorts of circumstances that we have seen,' he told reporters in Canberra.

'Furthermore, we are deeply concerned about the loss of life which has occurred.'

Mr Rudd called for Israel's blockade of Gaza to end.

Australia and Israel's usually cordial relations have become troubled with the attack on the aid convoy coming soon after the federal government expelled an Israeli diplomat.

The expulsion was in retaliation for Israel's use of forged Australian passports in an assassination in Dubai.

For those paddling strange arguments, please watch the movie below, so that you can have an understanding of how activists go about their business in the West. Believe me, they know the law more than you and I too. Its a regular occurence, but no one has been killed in any primitive, gungho commando operation, yet Japan has lost 10 ships to such action. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/jan/06/japan-whaling-sea-shepherd-greenpeace

The activists on that flotilla were from several different countries, there is even an American ex-ambassador involved, so please lets move away from the religious BS some folk are struggling to smuggle in. Let hard facts rule.

What would have been a better way of diverting the ship since the captain refused to change course like the others did?
As in my example above, Israel might want to learn about how the Japanese fend of aggressive Greanpeace ships annually. The unclothed display of force wasn't the most civilised thing they could have done. There are a thousand and one non-violent ways to stop or disable a boat of unarmed aid volunteers and activists.

In fact, another group of anti-whaling activists, SSCS have sunk 10 Japanese whaling ships, but we are far from seeing Japanese commando's pouring down from helicopters and shooting unarmed civilian activists in international waters. That is how to be civilised.

I think you're deliberately misstating the situation. Storming the ships with commandos was not necessarily a bad call. Would you have preferred they landed aboard the ships with Boy scouts?
We've seen videos that show the commandos being mobbed and beaten with sticks and bars. I don't know if you know this but beatings with bars and clubs are not fun. We've seen the Israeli soldiers being assaulted by the civillians. That alone is enough to put the lie to the claims from the organizers that resistance would have just been to stand in the way of the captains quarters etc. The activists actively attacked the IDF soldiers.
Please review the video evidence.

There's still a lot to condemn in the actions of the IDF, but to absolve the activists of all blame and responsibility and to neglect the video evidence of their armed resistance  is a shocking case of bias.
Have you considered that the ships were not even headed for Israel? That's an important bit you're missing out. As for your talk of bias, can we keep the argument on the level? Its a bit lame to label opposing views as biased. Some of you guys seem to be getting all emotional for one reason or the other. Lets keep it to cold logic about right or wrong.

Greanpeace regularly employs very robust (some may argue, extreme) tactics against Japanese whalers, but you will never hear that Japanese commandos have shot at least 10 of them dead. Activists will always do what activists do, and that is defend their cause solidly. It was primitive to employ maximum force.

texazzpete:
Funny enough, weren't you among the ranks of those that jubilated when MEND sailed to Lagos' Atlas Cove and opened fire, killing innocent Naval personnel and civillians alike?
Six civillans killed in that attack - no word of condemnation from you then. Only pure, unalloyed joy.
Joy?! Be real!
And can we keep to topic? It doesn't tell well when folk continually dredge up old arguments. Are we going to be talking about MEND when the topic is Israel and we are in the Foreign Affairs section?

its not about th arab league, let us come together as one and make things right, live in GAZA is unfair, aint no future for this people, I PRAY FOR CHANGES!!!
This is the obvious truth. I don't know why some of us have coloured our sense of morality so much with religion that we become blind to the obvious.
What is happening in Gaza is a disgrace to humanity; how much better is the situation there than it was in apartheid South Africa?
The only way Israel can ensure its security, is by finding an equitable solution to the Palestinian problem. It isn't by storming aid ships with commando's and shooting civilian volunteers dead; in fact I would say that the repercusions might be dire for all sides.

Are there real security concerns ob the Israeli side? Yes there are, but Israeli actions have started turning World opinions against them. Israel is beginning to look like a rogue state.
