Mariory:
That is a blatant lie. I did no such thing. Don't try to confuse issues by intentionally misquoting me. What I stated is that life in the West Bank right now is much better than life in Gaza. And the reason for that is Hamas. Pure and Simple. The fact that the only Palestinian supporter state that shares a border with Gaza also closed it's border (except for certain types of humanitarian aid) clearly demonstrates this. You can try to dance around this fact all you want but, there is no getting away from it.

Before Hamas forcefully took over by murdering Fatah members on the streets of the territory, Gaza had an economy, there were european monitors at the border crossings and the border with Egypt was open. Also Fatah had recognised Israel, Several militanats had signed agreements of peace with Israel, some had signed cease fires in order for negotiations to happen on the two state solution, and serious negotiations were going on in regards to the two state solution.

There were still issues with rocket fire into Israel from dissident militants and Israeli restrictions placed on Palestinians in the territories though and of course general living conditions in the territories but, there was relative peace.

Right now the Israeli's can negiotate with Fatah in the West Bank. But a Palestinian state cannot exist without Gaza. And Hams is in control of Gaza. And Hamas does not negotiate on recognising Israel. Thier charter calls for the elimination of Jews. On this premise Israel says it's acting to protect it's citizens by sealing off the territory.
What exactly is the lie? I said you are claiming that life in the West Bank is better (which you have just said again) shocked Or do you just want to say something?. . . Anything?
Go and hide! When people are guilty of stuff, they write gazillions of more stuff to cover up. What exactly did you mean with this? grin
Even to the blind, it is obvious that you are implying that life in the West Bank is better.

Mariory:
So true. Let us not forget that the Palestinians have two claims to territory. Gaza and the West Bank. The problem with Gaza is Hamas, as indeed Egypt too will testify. They didn't close their side of the border for nothing.

Other issues like Jerusalem, the disputed settlements, the border issues. All can be negotiated upon. Of that there is no doubt. I think we can both agree that Israel is here to stay. Having said that, how do you overcome the problem of Hamas, who insist Israel must cease to exist? That is the problem. Everything else is negotiable in theory.

Plus, why do you ask davidylan to provide a way out of the situation?

@Beaf

There is going to be a showdown by the looks of it. Israel is caught between a rock and a hard place.

If they allow the ship through it shows Hamas how weak Israel could be, if they don't many activists in the world would come down on Israel. Well Israel brought it on itself by being stubborn, the UN has urged it to peacefully lift the blockade years ago. Lets just see what happens, a few days would answer.
You couldn't be more right about the bolded. But I believe (or rather hope) there is enough sanity left in that country to realise that it is time for them to back down.

Israel is rapidly becoming a leper in the commity of nations. They have been condemned by several international press bodies and there are quite strong reactions from European countries like below;

Norwegian military cancels seminar as a matter of principle.

The military has called off a seminar with an Israeli Special forces officer after requests by the Ministry of Defence to remove him from the list of participants.
Full story here
Norwegians are also boycotting Israeli goods and there are loud calls for similar action in other Earopean countries like the UK.

It suits you to continue vacuously labeling what others write as "ignorant" and "rubbish" since you are clueless and have nothing to say. Anybody can throw words around, but it is another thing to say anything of substance. Nobody asked you for a debate; you were only asked to substantiate your wild claims. What your friend writes is not worth replying and I already explained why it was necessary to respond to you.
Hmmmmmm! Is it just because I told you to "dust your arse and learn" that you have flown off the hook so badly?
If what you were passionately claiming wasn't "ignorant" and "rubbish" would you have invented the false claim that I have labelled your words as such? Why lie?

For some strange reason, you seem to think that the pile of abuse you left was "asking me to substantiate claims". Lord have mercy! shocked
Abeg, go and dust your arse and learn, instead of firing impotent shots.

How hard is it to find what you wrote? Someone complained about the apartheid situation in Gaza and you made it seem that life in the West Bank is much better. You actually said that the problem in Gaza is Hamas, thats why I asked you about a little history. Life has never been different for the Palestinians, it is worse than what obtained in apartheid South Africa.

Hear it from the horses mouth. Read this story from The Committee to Protect Journalists. Israel has actually been falsifying footage by editing the original videos and photo's taken by foreign journalists. What a disgrace!

CPJ denounces Israel’s use of footage seized in flotilla raid
New York, June 3, 2010—The Committee to Protect Journalists denounces Israel’s editing and distribution of footage confiscated from foreign journalists aboard the Gaza-bound flotilla that was raided on Monday.

On Wednesday, the Israel Defense Forces spokesman’s office released edited portions of confiscated video on its YouTube channel, where the footage was labeled as “captured.” The Foreign Press Association in Israel, which represents hundreds of foreign correspondents in Israel, says the military “is selectively using footage to bolster its claims that commandos opened fire only after being attacked,” The Associated Press reported.

CPJ called on the Israeli government to immediately return all equipment, notes, and footage confiscated from journalists. “Israel has confiscated journalistic material and then manipulated it to serve its interests,” said CPJ Middle East and North Africa Program Coordinator Mohamed Abdel Dayem. “It must cease this practice without delay, and return all property seized from journalists who were covering this legitimate news event.”
Journalists have complained of mistreatment during the raid. Al-Jazeera cameraman Issam Zaatar told the Qatar-based channel that as he was filming the raid an Israeli soldier struck him with a stun gun. He said he suffered a broken arm and his camera was damaged during the altercation.
Gadijah Davids, a South African radio journalist, also had her equipment confiscated, according to her station, Radio 786. Rushni Ali, the station manager, told CPJ that Davids is in Turkey and will be leaving for South Africa on Friday. The South African government provided emergency travel documents for Davids because she “had nothing with her: no clothes, no travel document, no equipment” Ali told CPJ.
Paul McGeough, Sydney Morning Herald chief correspondent, told his newspaper that the raid was “very ugly.” He accused Israel of “absolute disrespect” with regard to the way that he and other reporters were treated. “Our job requires us to get the stories, and to reveal things that are not otherwise being revealed,” McGough said in a phone interview that appears on the paper’s Web site. “As Israel’s appalling handling of the flotilla demonstrates, you need journalists there to bear witness, to reveal what is happening out there.”
CPJ’s Abdel Dayem said: “The treatment meted out to our colleagues is unacceptable. It is Israel’s responsibility to conduct its operations in ways that also allow journalists to report the news.”

And just to give you a little lesson in Geography, Syria share a common border with Lebanon. alright !

Please stop this daftness and wisen up with the facts.

By the way when you call me Christian Al Qaeda , even though we are not blowing up people and maiming innocents, it just shows how shallow you can be sometimes.

Al-Qaeda, did the Syrians tell the reporter that the weapons were destined for Lebanon? Or did each missile have "destined for Syria, but going to Lebanon" written on? If not the report simply qualifies as stretching the truth (a behaviour common to extremists).

Beaf is as clueless as his pal, Afam (who blows hot air about facts and logic without presenting ONE or refuting ONE and who unwittingly questions an interpretation given by his own pal) hence he is chasing red herrings like “food basket”, “dropping names” (as if any name was mentioned out of context) and all that. Who ever said Tsvangirai has any power? And which is it: "Zimbabwe has never stopped exporting food" or "Zimbabwe was stopped from IMF/World/West/whoever from trading"? Anyway, this has gone on enough. I only got angry and replied Afam the way I did because he is often a reasonable man in other matters and so there is no way I could have overlooked his asinine quip that I hold the fort for Downing Street and the other statements he probably picks up from the mouth Mugabe and touts around without a clue what is talking about.
So you are small enough to get personal? Pity.

Brilliant comments here. Just brilliant. One is loath to comment on a thread filled with so much insults, but I should make a few observations.
Maybe I missed it or have forgotten some details and can be enlightened further, but I don’t see how Romeo can say the above highlighted. Powell was nowhere near Mai Lai (the incident) on that horrible day – this is the most important point. Granted he was an officer in an army bizarrely reckoning success by body counts and which shockingly brushed aside Mai Lai, but he was no General making any policies. Granted, also, the “investigation” he headed, like the others conducted by the Army into the incident, was a whitewash. But how does being a member of the unit or leading a sham investigation into the crimes translate to being “a war criminal responsible for the Mai Lai massacre”?
I find 3000 years a bit on the high side, in fact, probably way off by a wide margin. The way I recall it, the nation of Israel arrived there possibly around 1500 BC. They met people living there whom they either killed or drove out or integrated with. Then in 587/586 BC, they were driven out by the Babylonians. They did not return until 537 BC under Governor Zerubbabel, I think. Then in 70 AD, the Romans struck and Israel ceased to exist as a nation until 1948, right?

In any case, I think there will be a lot of chaos about if people were to return to their places of origin just like that. Imagine asking the Oni of Ife to return to Egypt or the Hausa/Fulani of Jos to leave. That is assuming, without conceding, that the children of Israel were the first inhabitants of that place. But the State of Israel is a fact the Arabs will have to deal with. I think even many of those speaking up against Israel’s atrocities here recognise this fact. These words were spoken by a hard line Palestinian militant: “What is all this nonsense about recognising the existence of Israel? Of course, they do exist! They bloody exist on my land!” The problem is not Israel’s existence but the hard line position on both sides. The current circumstances under which Palestinians live is unsustainable, most thinking people would admit. A way out ought to be found out of the stalemate. One of these days Davidylan might tell us how he would go about this.
1500BC to now is about 3500 years; aside from that, very good and well reasoned points.

Afam:
Is there any problem with the intake at NDA as regards these army officers?

The higher you go in the military a lot of appointments become political and there is very little anyone can do about that.

I guess you should focus on addressing early retirements of officers from certain parts of the country.
The appointments in the army should be based on merit, not politics. Every professional army is built on the twin bedrocks of strict discipline and merit, as soon as politics get involved, you get pepper soupers, coupists and sectionalists; these are the things we must cut out.

If there are "early retirements of officers from certain parts of the country", it puts an alarming coating on the problem. Early retirements might either be forced or officers from the affected parts are very frustrated with their chosen profession after too short a time. The question is; forced out or frustrated by who or what?

It all leads right back to the proposition that the demographics of the officer corps needs urgent addressing for the long term security of the country.

I praise the incredible patience and wisdom of Uncle Joe in the mature handling of a very delicate period of our history. However, now that we gradually attaining stability, serious consideration needs to be given to the ethnic makeup of the armed forces officer ranks, especially after 2011.

If the ethnic demographics had not been so abnormally skewed in the army; we would never have had the situation were they were employed to play a dangerous political game with the coup like military operation that accompanied the clandestine shipping in of Yar Adua in the dead of night.

If the demographics of our officer corps were not so skewed, we would not have had the Jos crisis, neither would there have been the unbelievable war of words and passing of responsibilities between the army and the Plateau state govt.

Enough is enough. Nigeria cannot afford to keep playing command politics, it is high time we joined the civilised World. I pray that this is on Jonathans mind.

Why I did not sack service chiefs - Jonathan
Friday, 04 June 2010 01:18 Horatius Egua & Remi Feyisipo

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday cited political stability as the main reason why he did not sack the service chiefs despite pressure from several quarters to do so.

Speaking at the 60th birthday thanksgiving service of Adebayo Alao-Akala, governor of Oyo State, at the Molete Baptist Church, Ibadan, and the third year anniversary of his administration, President Jonathan said he refused to bow to pressure to sack the service chiefs because the political interests of the nation were at stake.

“I remember when I was made acting president, so many people advised that I remove the service chiefs because they will remove me the next day. I told them that look, we are still hoping that Nigeria will stabilise politically. First is for the democratic system to stabilise and if I remove the service chiefs as acting president, which I could have done by mere pronouncement, all of them would have left. But I said if I had removed them, my conscience will begin to prick me and I would not be comfortable that as a nation we have stabilised but let me leave them even at the expense of my own position and if by God’s grace we succeed Nigeria will say at least politically we have stabilised”.

He particularly congratulated the military for the role they played in stabilising democracy in the country, especially during the turbulent period of the nation’s transition. “I have to thank the military because even with the turbulence today we can say to a reasonable level that we have stabilised politically,” Jonathan said.

The president said “one thing we achieved by the grace of God is political stability. Under the turmoil we passed through under the last three years, the polity has stabilised. That I took over from my boss and swore in a vice president is an indication that the polity has come to stabilise.
Jonathan

“The next thing is for those of us who are politicians to conduct ourselves in a way that we can trust ourselves and the public will trust us. One of those areas that people will use to test us is the relationship among politicians themselves,” he said. The president said efforts are been made to refund to state governments who engage in the rehabilitation of all federal roads all expenses they incurred, adding that the committee set up to look into the case would harmonise the strategies for the execution of such projects and the modalities for payments.

Prelate of the Methodist Church, Archbishiop Ola Makinde who took the sermon urged President Jonathan to fulfil his pledge to Nigerian to conduct a free and fair election come 2011. The cleric who took his message from the book of Psalms 103: 1-8 challenged the president to stabilise power supply in the country, stressing that without “electricity no meaningful development can take place”. Makinde who said the elevation of President Jonathan was divinely ordained urged him to continue to walk in the ways of God like King David, in the discharge of his duties.

He also urged the celebrant, Alao-Akala, to also maintain a close relationship with God so that he can continue to enjoy the blessings of God.

“A leader that is accessible is a good leader. Serve humanity in governance and let the people of Oyo State say that once upon a time you served in Oyo State as governor,” Makinde said. At the reception venue, Jonathan praised the foresight of the governor in executing the road projects in the state stressing that it will open up more business opportunities for the indigenes of the state.

While welcoming the president and other dignitaries at the reception, Alao-Akala said the rehabilitated roads would help ease traffic congestions within the Ibadan metropolis as well as increase social and economic activities in the state.

Present at the ceremony were former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Governors Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Osun State, Segun Oni of Ekiti State and Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State. Also present was Olusegun Agagu, former governor of Ondo State, top government functionaries as well as prominent sons and daughters of Oyo State.

Nigeria is packed with all sorts of religious dimwits that are willing to be used as fodder in any fundamentalism sponsored by Israel or Iran. Jonathans govt must be ready to deal ruthlessly with any of the bastar'ds that think foreign religions are good enough reason to create problems at home.

Very strangely and discomfiting is the fact that, while 90% of our local crazies can reel of detailed propagandised histories of either Iran or Israel; they haven't the slightest clue about the histories of their villages or even their families.
