Phones / Google Pixel 4a Renders Show A Square Camera Cutout And A Punch-hole Display by beejayvince(m): 12:07pm On Dec 31, 2019
The Google Pixel 4a has appeared in new renders. It looks like the Pixel 4 with a few changes. The Pixel 4a will be coming as Google’s midrange version of the Google Pixel 4 flagship series.

The Pixel 3a achieved much success when it was launched. It was well-received by users who did not care much about flagship specs but just wanted the stock Android experience and a good camera. We expect the Pixel 4a to achieve a similar level of success too.

According to the render from @OnLeaks, we see a device with a punch-hole display. The punch-hole sits at the top-left corner of the display. It houses the device’s front camera. This would be a first for the Pixel lineup.

One noticeable physical feature is that the bezels appear slimmer than what we see in the Pixel 3a. It is believed that the Pixel 4a will have a screen between 5.7 inches and 5.8 inches.

On the back of the device, we see a protruding square camera cutout, just like in the flagship Pixel 4 devices. However, the setup on the Pixel 4a is smaller and appears to come with just one camera with an LED flash. There is also a fingerprint sensor at the back of the device.

These are still early renders of the Pixel 3a and may not exactly portray the final product. We also do not yet have word on the actual specs of the device.

The Pixel 4a may likely be launched during Google I/O 2020.

Phones / Oppo F15 Appears In Official Teaser; Resembles The Oppo A91 by beejayvince(m): 11:25am On Dec 31, 2019
Oppo has been giving its F series two refreshes per year. The latest in the series now is the upcoming Oppo F15. This device is set to come as the successor to the Oppo F11.

We have now seen the official teaser video of the Oppo F15. Oppo’s Indian division posted the 30-second video on its YouTube page.

In the teaser which was promoted with the slogan “Flaunt it Your Way”, we see the Oppo F15 with four cameras. We also see a thin pill-shaped oval flash. These make the device strongly look like the Oppo A91 which was launched in China earlier in December.

If the Oppo F15 is just a rebranded version of the Oppo A91, then we already know some of the features to expect. We are looking at a phone with a 6.4-inch Full HD+ AMOLED screen with a waterdrop notch. We would also expect a phone with the quad-camera setup consisting of a 48MP main camera, an ultra-wide-angle shooter, a macro lens, and a depth sensor. In addition, there is a 4,000mAh battery.

It is not yet confirmed that the Oppo F15 is a rebranded version of the Oppo A91. It may eventually be an entirely different device. Whatever it is, it is only a matter of time before we find out.

Phones / Apple May Use In-screen Fingerprint Reader In Its 2020 Iphones by beejayvince(m): 9:55am On Dec 20, 2019
Over the past couple of years, Apple seems to be favoring facial recognition over Touch ID. However, the company is apparently not abandoning Touch ID. Apple has won a patent for under-the-display Optical Imaging Sensors. This means that we may get an iPhone with an in-screen fingerprint sensor soon.

With the release of the iPhone X in 2017, Apple seemed to ditch Touch ID fingerprint sensors. The company instead opted for just Face ID facial recognition.

According to a new patent spotted by Patently Apple, Apple could launch a new fingerprint sensor located under the screen of the next iPhone generation. This means that we will likely see it in the iPhone 12 series in 2020.

Even though Apple filed the patent in 2017, the company only just won it. This means that Apple will likely not abandon this mode of biometric authentication. We already see the in-screen fingerprint reader in phones from brands like Huawei and OnePlus as well as some other Android phones.

Phones / Kirin 1020 is coming With 5nm Process And 50% Power Increase Over The Kirin 990 by beejayvince(m): 8:23am On Dec 13, 2019
Huawei is already working on its next-generation flagship processor, the Kirin 1020. Even though this processor will not be released until next fall, there is already information about it on the news.

The latest news about the Kirin 1020 comes from Weibo. One of the bloggers’ channel posted ‘5nm Baltimore, ready to verify!’

Huawei is known to codename its HiSilicon chips after foreign cities. Also, TSMC’s 5nm process only has two customers at the moment – HiSilicon and Apple. So, it is quite safe to say that the Weibo post hints at Kirin’s next-generation flagship. The chip is likely ready to enter the tape-out verification stage.

The Kirin 1020 will reportedly upgrade to the A78 framework, skipping the A77. However, it is probably too early to conclude on the framework. More accurate information will definitely be available over time.

According to rumors, the Kirin 1020 will come with a 50% increase in power over the Kirin 990. In relation, the Snapdragon 865 SoC features a less than 25% increase in power over the Snapdragon 855.

The Huawei Mate 40 series will probably debut with this processor when it launches next year.
